For years, Barack Obama and mitt romney have been telling us their stories. this month, Frontline’s award-winning political team pushes past their carefully crafted narratives to deliver a fresh and in-depth look at the presidential candidates—examining their lives, choices and politics (page 10). “the oldest rule is that we never talk to the candidates,” explains Frontline’s Michael Kirk, who is producing The Choice for a third time (2000, 2008, 2012). “they’ve had plenty of time and spent plenty of money writing their own versions of the story. instead, we talk to people from their public and private lives, people who’ve worked closely with them, experts who’ve written books about them and experienced journalists who’ve covered them for years.” during the past year, michael and the WGBH Frontline team crisscrossed the country, conducting more than 100 lengthy interviews and mining archives before returning to WGBH to sift through more than 300 hours of videotape and information. What were they looking for? “First you find out everything you can about who they are now,” michael says. “then you go backwards. We’re interested in those pivotal moments in their lives, where they could have gone one way or the other. then we look back at their lives to find out the things that informed those moments.” You won’t find this kind of television reporting anywhere else. “most of journalism is after the ‘gotcha,’ the quick hit that knocks a candidate sideways for a while,” michael says. “What we aim to do is bigger: it’s more thorough and hopefully more thoughtful, connecting dots in the candidates’ past and experience.” The Choice 2012 continues online (pbs.org/frontline), with artifacts from the candidates’ lives and long-form video interviews with the people who know them best. in-depth, independent journalism that millions of Americans count on every day, all made possible by your generous annual support. thanks for making WGBH your choice!

Informing Your Vote

With less than six weeks until the elections, WGBH offers you an inside look at the presidential candidates and live coverage of national debates. WGBH’s Frontline returns this election season with The Choice 2012, which examines the rich personal and political biographies of the presidential candidates. since 1988, when Frontline first presented a dual biography of presidential hopefuls michael dukakis and George H.W. Bush, The Choice has gone behind the headlines to tell a deeper story about the candidates, the decisions they made and why their nominations could indicate historic change in American politics. in The Choice 2012, Frontline producer michael Kirk documents the people, places and decisive moments that made the men who are competing for the presidency. the two-hour program also presents the long view, through sweeping panoramas of the candidates’ biographies and explorations of the national landscape that shapes the campaigns, voters’ attitudes and the winner’s prospects for governing. A second PBs special, Race 2012, reveals one way the national landscape has changed: its racial demographics. the program delves into immigrants’ reshaping of the American electoral landscape, the economic imbalance between races that may affect America’s political future and the competition among candidates for votes from various ethnic groups. WGBH also will put you center stage for the national debates. tune in PBS NewsHour with co-anchors Gwen ifill and Judy Woodruff for live coverage and analysis of the presidential and vice presidential debates. moderators for the three presidential debates include PBS NewsHour’s Jim Lehrer (October 3), Cnn’s Candy Crawley (October 16) and CBs news’s Bob schieffer (October 22). martha raddatz of ABC news will moderate the vice presidential debate on October 11. Closer to home, WGBH’s Greater Boston will air Us senate debates with republican senator scott Brown and democratic challenger elizabeth Warren. WGBH and its sister station, WGBY in springfield, each will host a debate. Is CSI for Real?

there is a startling gap between the glamorous television world of CSI and the gritty reality of the forensic crime lab. With few established scientific standards, no central oversight and poor regulation of examiners, forensics in the Us is in a state of crisis. in Forensics on Trial, WGBH’s Nova investigates how modern forensics—including the analysis of fingerprints, bite marks, ballistics, hair, and tool marks—can send innocent men and women to prison, and sometimes even death row. With the help of re-creations of trials and cases, Nova investigates today’s shaky state of crime science as well as cutting-edge solutions that could help investigators put the real criminals behind bars. Inside the Cuban Missile Crisis

Fifty years after the events that brought the world to the brink of nuclear disaster, PBs offers two new specials about the Cuban missile Crisis. Cuban Missile Crisis: Three Men Go to War brings to life the three central figures in the crisis—President John F. Kennedy, soviet Premier nikita Khrushchev and Cuban leader Fidel Castro—while The Man Who Saved the World reveals the dramatic and shocking story of the events that took place beneath the waves when a lone russian submariner refused to fire a nuclear missile. Conflicting Passions

Church and state. Love and marriage. Faith and identity. Love Free or Die addresses all of these in its profile of a man whose two defining passions the world cannot reconcile: his love for God and for his partner mark. Gene Robinson became the first openly gay elected bishop in the high church traditions of Christendom. His 2003 elevation in the new Hampshire diocese ignited a worldwide firestorm in the Anglican Communion that has threatened schism. in the face of it all, robinson confronts those who use religion as a means of oppression, and claims a place for all in the church and society. Radio Spotlight 89.7’s Ted Canova Returns to His Roots After graduating from Emerson College, Ted Canova launched a nearly threedecade-long career in radio and television journalism that took him to New Hampshire, Rhode Island and, most recently, Minnesota. He arrived at WGBH last fall to become the first executive editor of 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio. WGBH’s Matt Roy spoke with Canova about his vision for the station, 89.7’s 30 Issues in 30 Days election coverage, his career and his return to Boston.

Q A

What is your approach to covering local news? We’ve got great competition on every plat- form: radio, TV and the Web. And it’s really important for WGBH News to not do things that our listeners can find somewhere else. We want to carve out our niche in this market by focusing on areas we think are underreported. We’re focusing on innovation and what it means for the region’s economy and future. We’re focusing on the life sciences industry, and we’re focusing on culture— with a small “c”—meaning how we live and what makes being in the Boston area unique. We’ve put an emphasis on storytelling: painting pictures through words and high-level production.

Q A

The election is on everyone’s mind. How do you do substantive reporting but keep people engaged? I’m a firm believer that “horse race” coverage is not the best thing for civilization. And our listeners have made it clear it’s not what they want. With our 30 Issues in 30 Days series, we’re going beyond the temporary snapshot that a poll offers. We’re telling in-depth stories on a variety of topics that will help listeners make an informed decision on Election Day.

Q A

Thirty is a lot. Can you give some examples? Job creation, environmental protection, innovations to solve our cities’ crime problems: those are three things that are really important to our audience. We’re looking at health care and how the law will be implemented in light of the US Supreme Court ruling. We know that a lot could change after the election, so it’s important

that we provide listeners with a deep understanding of what’s at stake. We highlight the impact these issues have on Massachusetts, and look through the lens of not only the presidential race, but also the state’s high-profile US Senate race.

Q A

You covered the 1984 New Hampshire primary as a TV news reporter. What was that experience like? Back then the immediacy of news was noth- ing compared to what it is today. Satellite trucks were a novelty. Candidates were able to go door-to-door in very small settings with limited coverage. A gaffe may not have generated the attention that it does now. Walter Mondale, Gary Hart, Jesse Jackson and John Glenn were among those running. I worked at a station in Derry, New Hampshire, so the campaign was our local story. It was fascinating. Candidates got to know you on a first-name basis because they would see you at every shopping mall, every rally and every living room. I remember standing in someone’s home watching Gary Hart’s wife, Lee, have tea with three prospective voters. It’s still bizarre to think that this is part of the process, but it’s what makes the New Hampshire primary so charming and intimate.

Q A

Is there a story you covered that stands out as the most memorable? It’s hard for me to look at my years in jour nalism and not focus on the different elected officials from state to state that I’ve covered. Whether it was Gov. John Sununu in New Hampshire, who had the temper to throw you out of a meeting just because you asked a question, or Gov. Ed DiPrete in Rhode Island, who ended up going to federal prison on corruption charges. In Minnesota, Gov. Jesse Ventura and I once spent two hours on the phone disputing a story, only for him to invite me into his office the next day for another two-hour conversation where he was recommending books for me to read.

Q A

After being gone for 26 years, how does it feel to be back in Boston? I kept an eye on Boston from afar, but I didn’t know what to expect when I returned. Who would have thought the waterfront would have been developed the way it has? Or that the Greenway was possible? Who would have thought that the South End would be filled with great restaurants and shops? But for as much as the city

“We really work hard not to

address the masses, but to tailor our message to one listener at a time.” has changed in appearance, the core of Boston remains the same. The people still care about issues that are close to them, whether it’s the environment, education, health care or race relations. I am amazed, however, that public transportation hasn’t changed much.

Q A

What distinguishes radio as a news source? Radio is the most intimate form of media that’s out there. It’s one person’s voice speaking one-to-one to listeners. At WGBH, we really work hard not to address the masses, but to tailor our message to one listener at a time. But it’s also incumbent on us to take a multimedia approach to reporting, to build Web pages with photos and videos that complement what people hear on the air (wgbhnews.org).

Q

WGBH just combined its television and radio news operations into one newsroom. What will our listeners and viewers gain? This is the future happening in real-time. A joint newsroom lets us create synergy that enhances our viewers’, our [online] readers’ and our listeners’ engagement with the journalism of WGBH. We have lofty goals. We think the newsroom gives us the foundation, the workflow and the resource-sharing to make us a leading voice in journalism in Boston and the country.

89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio What’s Your Issue? By Phil Redo, Managing Director 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio

Jobs, jobs jobs! It’s the biggest single issue driving the approaching election. According to every public opinion poll, it is clearly #1. Yet, job creation often is the result of how other issues are identified and addressed, including health care, public transportation, federal spending, deficits, education and foreign policy. We’ll be taking on these issues and more in our new 89.7 series, 30 Issues in 30 Days. With this initiative, which kicked off at the end of September, we are seeking a powerful way to seriously approach the nuances of the many issues voters are confronted with every election cycle. So often the media debate is reduced to “the economy” or “foreign policy,” and yet so many other issues are critically important in their own right and impact those larger issues in less obvious ways. We want to reveal those ways to you. The idea is to take on a single issue each day and present it in different ways throughout the course of our programs. Our new daily local talk show, Boston Public Radio, will dedicate a full segment to that day’s issue. Our goal is not only to explore substantive aspects of major national issues but also to identify how they are linked to legislative and public policy decisions that will be impacted by the November elections. If it’s a local issue, we’ll attempt to do the same. This series is just one part of our Focus Coverage of Election 2012 (learn more about our radio coverage on page 23).

If you would like to participate, go to wgbhnews.org and click on “30 Issues in 30 Days.” Credit for this concept goes to public radio station WNYC in New York, which originated this idea many years ago on The Brian Lehrer Show. Classical New England Discover the Discovery Ensemble

By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services

When it comes to classical music, Boston truly is the Hub of the Universe: the home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, four music conservatories, a plethora of professional music ensembles ranging on the chronological scale from the Boston Camerata to the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and thousands more professional musicians who possess both tremendous ability and inspiring passion for their work. Boston is home not only to the nation’s oldest musical organizations—the Handel and Haydn Society, formed in 1815—but also one of the nation’s youngest orchestras: the 50-member chamber orchestra called Discovery Ensemble. This month, Classical New England invites you to discover for yourself why Discovery Ensemble has become one of the most talked-about groups in Greater Boston. The group was founded in 2008, the same year we moved into our Fraser Performance Studio at the new WGBH headquarters on Guest Street in Brighton. This dynamic group of 20-somethings have been frequent guests ever since, led with remarkable verve and energy by music director Courtney Lewis. The 28-year-old Lewis came to Boston from his native Belfast in Northern Ireland, and has been lauded for his ease in speaking with audiences about the music the orchestra plays, his choices in programming and his skill as a conductor. And others have noticed: Lewis is now the associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, and last year was appointed a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the 2011–12 season, debuting with that orchestra last fall. Lewis’s LA connection led directly to one of the highlights of this past year’s season: former LA Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen not only conducted the BSO at Symphony Hall for the first time in decades, but down the street at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall,

Lewis and Discovery Ensemble offered a bracing account of Salonen’s Mania for cello and chamber orchestra. For all of his rising success in the music world, Lewis remains committed to the unique twofold mission he and artistic director David St. George have created for Discovery Ensemble: to provide Boston with a world-class chamber orchestra that brings established audiences a new and unusual repertoire, and to improve music education for the city’s youth. Lewis and the Discovery Ensemble players bring classical music out of the concert halls and into more accessible venues by presenting interactive workshops in schools and performing large children’s concerts in Boston’s low-income neighborhoods. All this month, we’ll be featuring select Discovery Ensemble performances on-air and online, capped off by a live broadcast of the orchestra’s season-opening concert at Jordan Hall on Sunday, October 21. That concert features a blend of programming old and new that has become a Discovery Ensemble hallmark, including J.S. Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 4 and Mozart’s youthful Symphony No. 28, as well as works by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, which will feature as violin soloist another musical superstar-in-the-making: Discovery’s former concertmaster Joshua Weilerstein, who was recently named the associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic. In a month where we celebrate Columbus and the spirit of discovery, we hope you’ll join us to discover the Discovery Ensemble…a group that may just offer us a peek into the future of classical music.

Classical New England Cartoon Festival

Come One, Come All!

By Laura Carlo Classical new england Program Host

October 27th is a day that i’ve had circled on my calendar for months now: the day of Classical new england’s 14th annual Classical Cartoon Festival! sure, your kids will just think they’re going to see Warner Brothers cartoons (with clever classically inspired scores) that their parents and grandparents enjoyed so much when they were young. But that’s just the start: for an entire day, all of Boston’s venerable symphony Hall is devoted to music, movies, kids, families and fun. three stages are set up to present programs especially tailored to capture the attention—and spark the imagination—of children being introduced to the incredible world of music. We’ll hear young flutists, cellists, violinists, marimba players, choruses and full youth orchestras playing classical music, looking very professional and having fun. We’ll also have a musical instrument “petting zoo” where children can try out any instrument that catches their fancy. Here’s a day where kids can influence each other for the good, like when they see others in their age group doing something fun and creative. We’ve heard from many parents over the years who have told us that just one day at the Classical Cartoon Festival prompted their children to ask for music lessons. Who knows, maybe those

lessons will turn them into modernday mozarts! But even if they don’t, there are countless studies that demonstrate how learning music trains the brain for better spatial testing, reasoning and memory. Here’s one example: one report by the College Board revealed that college-bound seniors with school music experience scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of their sAts and 41 points higher in math than those without any music instruction! so do something smart: come one, come all to a day of family fun with classic cartoons, cartoon characters and music—just for the joy of it. even if you’ve come to the Classical Cartoon Festival before, there always are new things to see and do. Bring your children or grandchildren . . . or just come alone and have a ball like when you were a kid. We can’t wait to welcome you “Bach!” For more information and tickets: wgbh.org/cartoonfest Sat, 10/27, 10am–4pm at Symphony Hall

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Meet the Cape’s Morning Man By Mindy Todd WCAI’s Managing Director for Editorial and Host

While most of us still are asleep, Dan Tritle hits the road—the bike path to be more precise—and heads to work. His routine is the same no matter the season. “I hit the bike path usually about 4:30am,” says the host of Morning Edition on WCAI. “It’s just me, the moonlight over Vineyard Sound and the occasional rabbit. It’s a marvelous way of getting energized for the day.” Dan has been the voice of Morning Edition on the Cape since the first days of WCAI. Hailing from Seattle, he ventured east after years of reporting for commercial radio, public radio and the Associated Press. Dan has a fond memory of arriving in Woods Hole on the eve of Memorial Day weekend in May of 2000 and carrying the WNAN (WCAI’s Nantucket station) banner in the Woods Hole Memorial Day Parade, which is famous for having more people marching in it than watching it. “That one event endeared me to the village, and I found a new home on Cape Cod,” he says.

WNAN had gone on the air in March, and in September, WCAI went live. “I still remember the thrill of pressing the button that enabled us to go on the air with Morning Edition,” he recalls. Dan is a busy guy. In addition to hosting, he is our station’s production coordinator. “I love our small staff and the friendly fellowship that we’ve created amongst ourselves,” he says. “We help each other out whenever we can. I’m proud of the work we do at WCAI.” When he’s not in the studio, you’ll find Dan bicycling or running the roads in and around Falmouth and Woods Hole. Or you might find him performing a play at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Dan also is a big science-fiction fan, and an expert on all things Star Trek and Twilight Zone. He even tackled Star Trek trivia during a WCAI pledge drive a few years ago, proving the Cape has its share of Trekkies. “It brought in an amazing amount of listener contributions,” he says.
