Where to Tune In
Yes, our August program guide is slimmer. These are challenging times and WGBH is cutting costs as we close the fiscal year (with your help!). We are also saving trees with this temporary measure. But you’ll still find the essential TV and radio program information you count on in these pages. Even as we trim the summer guide’s size, we’re expanding our program resources—on wgbh.org. There you’ll find not only up-to-the-minute TV and radio schedules, but also a rich menu of video previews. If you’re a fan of Greater Boston’s popular Beat the Press program on Friday nights, you won’t want to miss their new website (beatthepress.org). Now you can easily share Beat the Press videos with your friends, comment on segments and blog entries, and even suggest topics for upcoming shows. We’re also expanding our online radio services. WGBH recently launched A Celtic Sojourn Radio, with native Irishman and host Brian O’Donovan exploring traditional and contemporary music from around the Celtic world. The online stream offers a continuous set of programs recently broadcast on 89.7, giving you 24/7 access to all things Celtic. Our latest online feature may even help you decide what to watch, with Ron Bachman, director of WGBH programming, as your guide (see wgbh.org/webcasts). A 25-year WGBH veteran who used to write the introductions for Mystery! host Diana Rigg, Ron brings insight and humor to his “best of what’s on” rundown.“I see my monthly webcast as a way to take viewers behind the scenes,” he says,“and to showcase some quirkier pieces that remind people of our full range of TV programs.” So in addition to thumbing through our August guide, I hope you’ll visit wgbh.org to get the full picture of all the great programs your generous annual support makes possible this month, and every month.

August TV Highlights on Member Favorites
Super Nova
Tune in August 1–9 and 15–31 for a wide range of programs, including stunning music and dance programs. Member favorites are chosen and scheduled based on viewer feedback. Let us know what you would like to see! Weigh in at wgbh.org/memberfavorites and check wgbh.org/schedules to see when your favorites are airing.
Nova and Nova scienceNow team up for a fascinating evening of backto-back science, with Super Science Tuesday! At 8pm, Nova explores the deadliest plane crash, which killed more than 600 people in 1977. Then, astrophysicist, author, and host Neil deGrasse Tyson (shown with Mark Siddall) has fun with leeches, checks in on our search for alien life, and ends with his unique “Cosmic Perspective” (also available online at wgbh.org/ nova/sciencenow/cosmic).
A Tribute to Julia Child: Bon Appétit We celebrate our own Julia Child this month as she takes center stage once again, with Meryl Streep playing her in the movie Julie & Julia. Enjoy four of the best episodes of The French Chef, and remember why Julia was a television personality like no other. Great Performances: Pete Seeger’s 90th Birthday Concert Joining pioneer of protest music Pete Seeger for a once-in-a-lifetime concert event in celebration of his 90th birthday are Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Dave Matthews, and many others. Happiness 101 with Tal Ben-Shahar Based on Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar’s Harvard University class, one of the institution’s most popular courses of all time, this one-hour program combines scientific studies, scholarly research, self-help advice and spiritual enlightenment to teach people how to be happy. Leonard Cohen Live in London For more than four decades, Leonard Cohen has been one of the most important and influential songwriters in America, relentlessly examining the largest issues in human lives—sex, spirituality, religion, and power. Levon Helm’s Ramble at the Ryman Levon Helm takes his well-known “Midnight Rambles”—usually hosted at his home studio in Woodstock, NY—on the road to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Operatic Heat: Remember Me This high-energy mix of American dance, opera and rock music combines the athleticism of The Parsons Dance Company with the exhilarating live vocal performances of the East Village Opera Company, all wrapped in a classic tragic love story. Motown Memories Hosted by original Supreme Mary Wilson, this definitive collection includes archival hits and rare interviews from five Motown legends: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Marvin Gaye. 8
