Where to Tune In

Garrison Keillor (seen on this month’s cover) is an American icon. You’ve enjoyed him on A Prairie Home Companion for 35 years (Saturdays at 6pm and Sundays at 12noon on 89.7), as has my own family—who love his quirky, weekly “Letter from Lake Wobegon” stories. And this month, American Masters recognizes his stature with an intimate profile, The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes (Wednesday, 7/1 on WGBH 2; see page 8). You also may have discovered Keillor’s brief, daily poetic meditations on The Writers Almanac (weekday mornings at 8:55am on 89.7). Now, the man on the radio in the red shoes is helping us bring poetry to a wider TV and Web/social network audience with Poetry Everywhere (pbs.org/wgbh/poetryeverywhere). A WGBH co-production with David Grubin and The Poetry Foundation, Poetry Everywhere is a series of five-minute films interspersed at unexpected moments throughout the TV broadcast schedule and available on the Web 24/7. Our objective is simple: to expose diverse audiences to a spectrum of contemporary poems and poetic voices, on air and online, and build a broader appreciation for poetry. “We want to make poetry a visceral and accessible experience for as many people as possible,” says Brigid Sullivan, WGBH Vice President for Children’s, Educational and Interactive Programming, and executive producer of the project. “And who better to narrate the series than Garrison?,” Brigid adds. “He’s a beloved public radio presence, a trusted authority on poetry, and he has that rich, familiar voice.” Keillor’s introductions provide context and guidance for audiences— Facebook and Twitter users included—and eases them into appreciating the serendipity of the Poetry Everywhere segments, be they former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins reading The Lanyard or playwright Tony Kushner sharing a favorite passage from Walt Whitman. New avenues for reaching new audiences? It’s pure poetry. Thanks to your generous support, WGBH is able to offer rare exposure to the best of our culture—free and accessible to all!

Tanglewood’s Roots Run Deep By Jennifer Goebel Tanglewood, known the world over for its summer music festival, has two unlikely sources to thank for its existence: the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Great Depression. Henry Hadley, associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, had a dream: He wanted to launch a summer music festival in the Berkshires. Hadley teamed up with fellow Berkshire summer resident, New York City socialite and determined organizer Gertrude RobinsonSmith to raise money and recruit musicians to perform classical music excerpts. Starting an ambitious project in the midst of the Depression may seem strange, but Robinson-Smith saw the potential of jobs for local laborers and business for Berkshire inns and restaurants. On August 23, 1934, musicians from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra performed the ﬁrst concert of the Berkshire Symphonic Festival at the Hanna Horse Farm in Stockbridge. More outdoor concerts followed in 1935 and 1936, before Hadley and Robinson-Smith parted ways due to Hadley’s failing health and “artistic differences”—Robinson-Smith was pushing for complete musical works, while Hadley preferred excerpts. Robinson-Smith invited the BSO to perform in 1936 and 1937. Meanwhile, the Tappan Family, which owned one of the parcels of land that now make up Tanglewood, was struggling with the ﬁnancial

downturn, and was unable to rent out their property to summer tenants (previous tenants included Nathaniel Hawthorne, from whose Tanglewood Tales the venue takes its name). Robinson-Smith approached the Tappan family, who agreed to give the buildings and 210 acres of lawns and meadows to the BSO. Thus, in 1937, the BSO was given a permanent summer home. Serge Koussevitzky, the BSO’s conductor at the time, gratefully received the donation. Koussevitzky wrote of the gift:“Little did I think that my own early dream of a Music and Art Center in Moscow, in the heart of Russia, would ﬁnd its realization in the heart of New England a quarter of a century later. Indeed, miracles cannot be accounted for.” An enormous tent was set up to improve the outdoor acoustics and provide shelter for the orchestra and audience. The heat proved to be a real problem, leading to some of the ﬁrst performances in shirt-sleeves rather than formal jackets. And, the tent was not waterproof. On the evening of August 12, during a program of Wagner, a sudden thunderstorm drenched the tent and its

inhabitants. An eyewitness account in M. A. DeWolfe Howe’s A Tale of Tanglewood says, “the ﬂoods descended on the tent top with such a roar that all the brasses of Wagner could not prevail against it, and the music had to come to a full stop.” The case for a waterproof and airy performance space had been made. Koussevitzky and Robinson-Smith worked with Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen to design a graceful music pavilion, but they were unable to raise the funds to build it. The idea for a simple and functional shed came from Berkshire resident Joseph Franz, and it was built in time for the 1938 summer season. Renamed the Koussevitzky Music Shed in 1988, it resembles a large piano from the air, seats 5,200 people, and is a masterpiece of acoustic design. The rest, as they say, is musical history!

Inside Live Radio and Baseball with Neal Conan Q A Award-winning journalist Neal Conan hosts Talk of the Nation, the national news-talk call-in show from NPR® News. Conan brings an agile and insightful mind (along with three decades of news and radio experience) to the show, which reaches nearly 3.4 million listeners a week on more than 300 NPR member stations, including WGBH’s sister station on the Cape, WCAI. Like so many, Conan also is a baseball fan. During the 2001 baseball season, Conan took a year off from NPR to call baseball games, an experience he recounts in his book, Play By Play: Baseball, Radio and Life in the Last Chance League. WGBH’s Jen Goebel chatted with Conan recently about baseball and live radio, which have more in common than you might think.

Q A

How did you get started in radio?

I was sitting alone in my New York City apartment and was fiddling with the FM dial, when I came across these voices talking on the air. I’d never heard voices like these before—it was back in the ’60s—and most of the voices you heard were incredibly artificial and stylized. What I stumbled across was people telling bad jokes and laughing, women’s voices, which were very unusual at the time, and people talking like people. In fact, I had discovered the very first public radio fundraising marathon. I ended up going in to answer telephone calls for the station.

What was your ﬁrst paying job in radio?

I was the recording engineer on Harry McGuirk’s Irish Hour, for which I got paid $5 and a bottle of Guinness—and they were unwise enough to give me the Guinness before the show started.

What do you like best about hosting Talk of the Nation? I like that the distance between the idea and the air is very short. And I am constantly amazed by the resources that listeners are willing to bring to the program. They’ve written poetry and commencement addresses, for example. I also really love going in at 2 o’clock and doing the show. It’s extremely difﬁcult because it’s always

What do you like about calling baseball games? It gives you a chance to tell incredible stories within the structure of the game. The story is always told pitch by pitch, but you’re allowed to weave stories in and around the narrative. I love that you don’t know what’s going to happen, you’re stepping off a cliff every single day. That’s the best part about baseball, and it’s also the best part about live radio.

Are you looking forward to this year’s Cape Cod League All-Star game? I called the game last summer in Chatham, which is a lovely place to visit and a charming ﬁeld, but this is Fenway Park—it’s the chance of a lifetime. live and there’s a million ways to mess it up. You have to keep three clocks in your head at once— you have to know where you are in the show, where you are with the delay, and how long this cut of tape is.

How did you get interested in calling baseball games? I was in Chicago preparing to anchor the live coverage of the national convention for President Clinton’s second term. I had this giant briefing book and I was cramming for the night’s broadcast. As I was reading up on the issues, I had the ball game on the radio—and I realized I was doing the same thing that the announcers were doing. You start the broadcast with a brief summary of what’s at stake, in my case the foreign policy night at the Democratic National Convention, or in theirs that the Cubs hope to take the “rubber” game of the three game series. Then, you introduce your play-by-play partners, in their case an old relief pitcher, and in my case E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post. Then you run through the batting order or the schedule for that night’s events, and then you take it down to the convention floor or down to the field and do the best you can to describe things as they happen. I’ve adored baseball on the radio since I was a kid, and it had never occurred to me that maybe my skills were transferable.

What’s the future of public radio?

Public radio has a very recognizable and trusted brand. We have an incredible news gathering organization not just at NPR, with national and international news, but also at stations like WGBH and around the country. We have to leverage the trust and comfort people have in us onto other platforms.
