Don’t Miss
American Experience’s landmark series, We Shall Remain, continues this month with Geronimo premiering Monday, May 4 and Wounded Knee Monday, May 11. Representing an unprecedented collaboration between Native and non-Native filmmakers, the series establishes Native history as an essential part of American history. The documentary series is the heart of the widereaching initiative including ReelNative, an innovative short film project, and an extensive community engagement campaign. Go to pbs.org/ weshallremain for streaming video, and explore related lectures on the WGBH Forum Network at wgbh.org/forum.

Kenneth Branagh and Rebecca Eaton have a lot in common: They’ve collaborated on three WGBH Masterpiece productions over the past 21 years, are both attracted to flawed fictional heroes, and are longtime fans of Swedish writer Henning Mankell’s atmospheric mystery novels. Which makes Rebecca (the executive producer of WGBH’s Masterpiece) and the distinguished British actor the perfect pair to transport Inspector Kurt Wallander from the pages of Mankell’s moody international bestsellers to the Masterpiece Mystery! screen. Wallander premieres this month (see cover and page 11) with Branagh as the Swedish sleuth battling crime and his own demons in a remote seaside town. The star of Masterpiece’s Fortunes of War, Henry V, and Much Ado About Nothing embraced the “wonderfully complex and compelling” Wallander role, he tells us, because “it delivers on the page-turning qualities of a thriller.” Rebecca, who has been watching the detectives for decades from her office here at ’GBH, agrees. Partnering with the BBC and other co-producers to bring American viewers the best in book-based British drama, she’s introduced us to such intrepid investigators as Jane Tennison, Adam Dalgleish, Christopher Foyle, and the enigmatic Endeavour Morse. “My decisions about what airs are very subjective,” she says, “but informed by a sense of Masterpiece audience tastes, as well as some standardof-excellence measurements: Is it a good story? Are the writing, directing, acting, and production values top shelf?” Wallander, Rebecca continues, “meets all the criteria.” Last year, Rebecca oversaw the evolution of WGBH’s new Masterpiece into three distinct seasons (Classic, Mystery!, and Contemporary), each with its own on-air host (for Mystery!, actor Alan Cumming).“We held fast to our literary roots,” she says, “while attracting new generations of drama fans, on screen and online, where wgbh/masterpiece now is the fifth mostsearched website on pbs.org.” Great books, top talent, and an expanding audience hungry for first-rate material add up to truly timeless TV that you also can watch online, never more valued than today. Thanks to your generous support, WGBH can continue bringing masterpieces like Wallander—free—to everyone. Jon Abbott

Sleuthing Swede Kenneth Branagh stars as “the Norse Morse,” Inspector Kurt Wallander, the scruffy Swedish sleuth created by best-selling author Henning Mankell. In three whodunits, Mankell pits his hero against the creeping malaise affecting contemporary Sweden, where permissiveness and the collapse of the welfare state are slowly undermining the spirit of law and order. A maelstrom of bizarre crimes, involving axe murders, scalpings, random assassinations and cyber-terrorism, taxes Wallander’s wits. Find out more at wgbh.org/masterpiece. Public Enemy #1 Bernard Madoff’s success as a broker made the competition wonder how the man could produce such steady returns in good times and bad. The SEC investigated several times over the last two decades, but Madoff remained untouched until last December, when he admitted it was all “one big lie.” Frontline producers Martin Smith and Marcela Gaviria unravel the story behind the world’s first truly global Ponzi scheme—a deception that lasted longer, reached wider and cut deeper than any other business scandal in history. Camelot A saga of ambition, wealth, family loyalty and personal tragedy—no family has had such a powerful hold on the American imagination as the Kennedys. This acclaimed encore presentation has been updated to emphasize the role of the Bay State’s senior Senator, Edward Kennedy (shown center, with brothers Robert and John). From the dark days of his accident at Chappaquiddick and his unsuccessful 1980 presidential campaign (which may have finally freed him of the burden of his father’s ambition) to his highly successful and influential Senate career, Kennedy’s story is a riveting look at recent American history. Seen in the Halls WGBH got footloose when Kevin and Michael Bacon dropped by to tape a segment for Greater Boston (see it at wgbh.org/gb) and perform for a small studio audience in WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio. The Bacon boys have other ’GBH connections, too. Michael composes music for American Experience, and received an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Music for his work on The Kennedys (see page 14); Kevin starred in American Playhouse’s Lemon Sky, a 1987 WGBH production filmed in our Western Ave. studios—where he also met his wife, co-star Kyra Sedgwick.
Sneak Peek Enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at Ken Burns’s upcoming documentary, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Slated to air this fall, the 12-hour, six-part series, coproduced by longtime colleague Dayton Duncan, is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. Telling Their Stories From the first Chinese American film produced in 1916 to Ang Lee’s triumphant Brokeback Mountain nine decades later, Chinese people have contributed to and been portrayed in an industry that was often ignorant about and dismissive of race. Moving beyond the stereotypical and exotic images of Suzy Wong and Bruce Lee, artists Wayne Wang, Joan Chen, Nancy Kwan, Amy Tan and more share their experiences of being “the other.” This is one of many programs airing in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The Golden Age of Jazz The jazz community celebrates the golden anniversaries of a number of classic jazz recordings this month, including Miles Davis’s best-selling album, Kind of Blue. Widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz albums of all time, Kind of Blue went quadruple platinum (4 million albums sold) in October 2008. Also hitting the 50-year mark are John Coltrane’s Giant Steps; Ornette Coleman’s Shape of Jazz to Come; Charles Mingus’s Mingus Ah Um; and many more by Coleman Hawkins, Red Garland, Benny Golson, Art Pepper, Lee Konitz, Art Blakey and others. Tune in every Friday in May at 8pm as Jazz from Studio Four host Steve Schwartz features landmark recordings from these giants of jazz.
Charles Mingus
Miles Davis makes several more appearances on our jazz agenda in May, as Eric Jackson, host of WGBH 89.7’s Jazz with Eric in the Evening, pays tribute to the legendary jazz trumpeter who would have turned 83 on May 25. Davis was at the forefront of jazz from the 1940s to the ’90s, playing and often leading the development of bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, jazzfunk, jazz fusion and, on his final album, a blend of jazz and rap. On Monday, 5/18 beginning at 8pm, Jackson highlights Davis’s early career, focusing on his work with John Coltrane and Gil Evans. And, on Monday, 5/25 at 8pm, Jackson examines Davis’s fascination with electric instruments—electric pianos, guitars, even a wah-wah on his trumpet— in his later years. Also in our jazz lineup for May is a special live performance by Fred Hersch, one of the most prolific solo jazz pianists of his generation, on Jazz from Studio Four at 8pm on Friday, 5/15. And, on Friday, 5/29, Schwartz features an evening of Latin-flavored straight-ahead and bebop jazz with trumpet and flugelhorn player Claudio Roditi. Be sure to join us! If you’re still searching for more jazz, be sure to check our website, wgbh.org/ jazz. Here you’ll find downloads and streams of the most recent editions of Jazz with Eric in the Evening and Jazz from Studio Four, performances recorded live in the Fraser Performance Studio, Jazz Conversations with Eric Jackson podcasts, a series of “Jazz Portraits” from the WGBH Archives, and a slideshow of photos of some jazz greats by our own Steve Schwartz.

Coda Out of Africa with NPR’s Gwen Thompkins a deadline—people are counting on you, and you feel like you should have “MacGyvered” some way to do it!
National Public Radio’s East Africa correspondent Gwen Thompkins is based in Nairobi, Kenya and covers news from the Horn to the heart of Africa—most recently reporting from South Africa, Kenya, Sudan and the Congo. In February, Thompkins presented the 2009 Morris Memorial Lecture at Harvard University, an honor awarded by the Neiman Foundation to an American overseas correspondent in memory of Joe Alex Morris, a foreign correspondent killed in 1979 during the Iranian Revolution. While in Boston, Thompkins discussed her reporting from East Africa with WGBH’s Jennifer Goebel.
Q A
How did you become NPR’s East Africa correspondent? I came to NPR as a senior editor for Weekend Edition and was on the show for 10 years. But I always nurtured this secret dream of becoming a foreign correspondent. When NPR was expanding its foreign desk a few years ago, I applied. I like storytelling, and I thought it would be great to go someplace new, where we hadn’t had a lot of coverage. I’ve been the East Africa correspondent for two years, and most days, I love it.
Q A
How do you choose your stories?
Sometimes the news tells you where to go, as with the recent presidential election in the US. It had a tremendous effect on southwestern Kenya, where Barack Obama’s extended family lives, so I went there on election and inauguration day. But for the most part, I come up with the story ideas myself. When I first got to Kenya, I did a story on how Kenyans love country music—they adore Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Stories like these challenge people’s assumptions, and give them a different idea of what East Africa is really like. I also did a story on how “colored” and “black” South Africans view the post-apartheid era. Despite sometimes almost indistinguishable skin tones, a colored person and a black person may have starkly different ideas about what “walking into freedom” has meant.
Q A
Tell me about covering Obama’s inauguration from Kenya. I was in the western Kenyan town of Kisumu, the provincial capital of the region. We watched the inauguration from a sports ground, where thousands of people gathered to cheer and
Q A
What cultural difference has surprised you the most? I’ve gotten to see a different measure of wealth, and it’s refreshing. In Somalia, for instance, it’s all about the camels. You are nothing there if you don’t have camels. Westerners often come to talk to the Somalis about how to improve their lives and govern themselves, but in a way, the Somalis see the West as poor, because they have no camels.
dance, and they were thrilled that he mentioned them in his remarks. The people here are very proud of their connection to candidate, and now President Obama and have been inundated with tourists and international press over the past two years. And, because of that connection, this part of western Kenya is now getting attention from the government in terms of infrastructure: road paving, electricity and an expanded water supply.
Q A
Is it hard to establish rapport with the local people when you’re a foreign correspondent? People can peg me pretty fast as an American, but sometimes they will start speaking Swahili to me. When Africans mistake you for one of theirs, it can help you do your job better. And when you’re black and American, everyone wants to know if your ancestors come from this part of Africa. I have no idea where my ancestors come from, but it opens up a conversation, and you have to use whatever you can to get people talking.
Q A
What’s the biggest challenge of your job? It’s a very pedestrian thing—technology. The Internet in East Africa is horribly slow, service is terrible. I’m constantly lugging around machines that I hope will work and often don’t. What’s more, in most of countries I visit, the power goes out at the darnedest times. I have often written and edited my stories by candlelight.“Plan B” is the name of the game, and sometimes you need “Plan F” or even “M.” If I weren’t living on a western deadline, it would all be okay, but it’s terrible when you blow
Q A
What do you think the value is to an American audience of NPR having an East Africa correspondent? I think many Americans have an image of Africa as a tragic place, filled with starvation and violence. I look for the stories that fill out the picture—most people here are not displaced, not victims of terrible crimes. They’re getting medical and law degrees, they’re raising children, they’re going on vacations, and they have aspirations for the future. My job is to help our audience become more conversant about Africa and to give people a sense of how ordinary life can be.
