One + One = Four Take FNRT 20203 – Dance and Music: Living Art, Living Culture and earn two core curriculum designations: FA and CA Take the FNRT + POSC and earn four: FA/CA and SSC/GA Through the Dynasty to Democracy Summer Study Abroad program, it is possible to come away with four core curriculum designations from two courses through one magical experience of three European capitals: Budapest, Prague and Vienna. June 17-July 11 You do not have to be a dance, music or political science major to sign up for this tour! Dance and Music: Living Art, Living Culture: take a look into the culture of Budapest, Prague and Vienna – the former Habsburg Empire – through the eyes of its artists, past and present. This course of study spans three central European cities over three and a half weeks time in June/July 2014. Students will gain information from experiences in the artistic disciplines of dance and music, through a lens of history and culture. This study abroad adventure will introduce students to performance, creation, observation, and the development of a critical language with which to engage intellectually as an audience member or in conversation with an artist. Students will explore a range of perspectives that define the cultural and historical forces that impact the development of national identity. Through first-hand experiences at each site, students will use that information to analyze classical and contemporary manifestations of the dance and music works made and performed during and after Communist rule. Set inside the established study abroad experience “Dynasty to Democracy”, students in this course will meet and interact with artists in these disciplines who have lived inside of Communist regimes, and beyond. They will situate themselves inside of these societies: living art, living culture.

What do I gain from this? >An enchanting experience in three of Europe’s most elegant cities >Living and learning on site >Classical, contemporary and folk dance – meeting the artists, seeing performances >A multidisciplinary approach - everyone engages in dance, art, music, culture, politics, and economics through lectures, visits with artists, performances >A unique opportunity to be inspired! >Core credit for Fine Arts (HEE) and/or Cultural Awareness (HMVV) OH and…visit castles and museums, cruise the Danube, climb every mountain. . . This study abroad experience is a joint venture between Fine Arts and Political Science. Students may sign up for FNRT 20203 (3 credit hrs. – FA and CA) and/or POSC 35723 or 40970 (3 credit hrs. – SSC and GA).
