In FOX’s Call Me Kat (Thursdays), Swoosie Kurtz returns as Sheila in the comedy’s second season. The redhead first popped up on TV on The Donna Reed Show in 1962, and she kept going onstage, where she won two Tony Awards (Fifth of July and The House of Blue Leaves), and onscreen, where she won an Emmy for Carol and Company. Here she answers our “5 Questions.” Anything new for Sheila this season? Let’s just say there is trouble in paradise — that, and then some very funny stuff. Like last year, we had very funny stuff, like the therapy episode that went pretty raw and got so deep and serious, and in the same episode, we were throwing blue paint at each other. Call Me Kat is something we all need right now. We can momentarily put COVID aside and just live with this wonderful woman who is so resilient and positive and upbeat. What were some of your earlier jobs to support yourself when starting out? I worked at Macy’s for a bit. After three days, they wanted me to take over the department. It was women’s clothing of some kind. I forget what. I only lasted a few more days at this hourly rate, and what I made, I would spend.

QUESTIONS WITH SWOOSIE KURTZ OF “CALL ME KAT”
By Jacqueline Cutler
Tell us about a time you were starstruck. I am still able to be starstruck so easily. When I worked with Michael Caine on a movie, and we were in bed together. He electrocuted me on the treadmill, and it was a shock to the system. I was in love with him. Nobody will know who Imogene Coca was, but I worshipped her brilliance. [She was] energetic and mischievous and full of life. I was living in New York and trying to be an actress. I heard that she and Sid Caesar were playing at a cabaret room in some hotel. I waited for where she and Sid would come out, and I stopped her, and I said, “Miss Coca, I am sorry to disturb you, I worship you. My name is Swoosie.” And she said, “[Director] Jerry Zaks said you are a genius!” Oh my God, if I knew that when I was watching her when I was 7, I would not have believed it! If you could invite anyone — living or dead — to a dinner party, who would be there? Stephen Hawking, FDR and Hedy Lamarr. She lived in a house two blocks over from [choreographer and director] Michael Bennett, who I worked with for a year.

What three foods do you keep in stock? I eat very healthy and very carefully. Always coconut stuff and rice. I am big into rice of all kinds, and brownies if possible. Because as they once said, chocolate is good for you.

2. NATHAN CHEN, FIGURE SKATING

3. CHLOE KIM, SNOWBOARD
At age 17, Kim became the youngest woman to ever win gold at the Olympics in the snowboard halfpipe event with her performance in PyeongChang and is primed for another gold medal in Beijing. Fun fact: Kim competed as the Jellyfish on The Masked Singer Season 4. 4
A two-time Olympic gold medalist for Canada, Humphries became a U.S. citizen in December. She’ll be a medal contender in the new monobob event, as well as in the two-woman bobsled teamed with Sylvia Hoffman.

SPEED SKATING
Former inline skater Jackson was a surprise qualifier at the PyeongChang Games. Four years later, she’s a gold-medal favorite and poised to be the first U.S. woman to win the 500-meter race since Bonnie Blair in 1994.
8. JOHN SHUSTER, CURLING
Shuster skipped the U.S. men’s team to its first ever gold medal in curling with a big win over Sweden in PyeongChang. Entering his fifth Olympics, Shuster has returning teammates Matt Hamilton and John Landsteiner, plus newcomer Christopher Plys, to attempt a repeat title.
9. MADISON HUBBELL & ZACHARY DONOHUE, ICE DANCING The ice dancing duo of Hubbell and Donohue narrowly missed the podium in PyeongChang, and the three-time U.S. champions will give it their all, knowing that Beijing is their last shot at an Olympic medal before retiring from the sport.
10. MAAME BINEY, SHORT TRACK
Biney was only 17 years old when she made history in 2017 by becoming the first Black woman to make a U.S. Olympic short track speed skating team. A fierce competitor, the older and wiser Biney can contend with anyone at the 500meter distance. — Ryan A. Berenz
DIDN’T WE JUST HAVE AN OLYMPICS? The Tokyo Summer Games, postponed a year by the pandemic, ended in August. The time from Tokyo to the Beijing Games is the shortest amount of time between Olympics since 1992, when the Winter Games in Albertville, France, in February were followed up with the Barcelona Summer Games in July. IS THE NHL IN OR OUT? The NHL didn’t participate in the 2018 PyeongChang Games, but had intended to send players to Beijing. That prospect ended when the NHL regular season was impacted by a surge of COVID-19 cases, and the Olympic break will instead be used to make up for games that were postponed. DOES CHINA HAVE MANY WINTER OLYMPIANS? China traditionally hasn’t been a major player at the Winter Olympics. The nation won its first medals in the 1992 Albertville Games, and has since fielded strong competitors in short track speed skating. In PyeongChang, China won a total of nine medals, only one gold. Compare that to top winner Norway’s 39 total medals, 14 of which were gold. As host country, China will qualify athletes in a lot of events that it wouldn’t have otherwise. WILL THE “GREAT FIREWALL” OF CHINA OPEN? China doesn’t allow its citizens to freely access the internet and blocks many sites Westerners routinely use. China is lifting its internet restrictions for international participants and media in the Olympic Village and competition venues. There is a concern that China could censor or conduct surveillance on these users. WHERE AND WHEN ARE THE NEXT OLYMPICS? Next up are the Paris Summer Games in 2024, followed by the 2026 Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Games in Italy, the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles and the 2032 Brisbane Summer Games in Australia. — RAB 5

THE RINKS, SLOPES AND STADIUMS A total of 12 competition venues are set to host 109 medal events. Most venues are using existing facilities, while some are new for these Games.
CAPITAL INDOOR STADIUM This 17,000-seat stadium in Beijing will host figure skating and short track events. NATIONAL SPEED SKATING OVAL This is the only new arena built on the grounds of the 2008 Olympic Park in Beijing. It will host speed skating during the Games.
SHOUGANG BIG AIR The world’s first permanent big air venue, located on Beijing’s outskirts, will host snowboard and big air events. NATIONAL ALPINE SKI CENTER This newly constructed venue in Yanqing will host alpine skiing. NATIONAL SLIDING CENTER Bobsled, luge and skeleton events will be held at this venue in Yanqing. It has 16 turns with different angles and slopes. GENTING SNOW PARK Aside from big air, all other snowboard and freestyle skiing events will take place at this park in Zhangjiakou. — Paul Doro
MORE PANDEMIC GAMES There was significant apprehension regarding the pandemic ahead of the Games. Despite tight quarantine protocols, a number of cases among athletes and others emerged during Tokyo’s Summer Games last year. Many athletes have expressed health concerns. The International Olympic Committee and Beijing Olympic organizers worked hard to ensure safety for all involved with the Games. While there is not a vaccine mandate, any non-fully vaccinated athlete, official or worker must quarantine for 21 days. There will also be daily testing for vaccinated individuals. In addition, the IOC stated that any athlete with a confirmed positive COVID test must produce two negative tests 24 hours apart in order to participate. Attendance will again be limited. Families of athletes cannot visit the host country, and neither can sports bodies, sponsors or broadcasters. Tickets will be sold only to residents of China’s mainland, and they must meet certain COVID countermeasure requirements. Starting Jan. 23, organizers planned to operate a health security bubble — a “closed-loop management system” — even for vaccinated people. – PD 6
WHAT’S NEW (AND EXPANDED)? A record 109 medal events, which is nearly double the number at the 1992 Winter Games, includes seven new events making their debut in Beijing. There is men’s and women’s big air freestyle (a popular competition at the Winter X Games), women’s monobob (single-person bobsled), mixed team snowboard cross, mixed team aerials, mixed team short track relay and mixed team ski jumping. The new mixed-gender events are one way the International Olympic Committee is adding more women’s events, something it has been working to address in recent years. This is the third straight Winter Olympics to add mixed-gender events, and nearly half of the competitors are set to be female, a Winter Olympics record. – PD

NATIONAL STADIUM The iconic stadium in Beijing known as the “Bird’s Nest” will host the opening and closing ceremonies, becoming the first stadium to host both ceremonies at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

WHO IS STAYING HOME? The Olympic Games in Beijing are not without controversy. Several countries, including the U.S., have announced a diplomatic boycott in protest of China’s human rights violations, such as abuses against the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Joining the U.S. in the diplomatic boycott are Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. — PD

SUPER PUMPED: THE BATTLE FOR UBER NEW SERIES!
Many of us have taken an Uber or are at least familiar with it. The service is convenient and quick, two things most people are looking for when trying to get from point A to B. But do you know the history behind the company and how it grew to the behemoth it is now? Showtime is ready to tell the sordid tale in Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber. Each season of the Super Pumped anthology series will explore a different story from the business world that changed our dayto-day culture, from good to bad. The first, The Battle for Uber, comes from the bestselling book of the same name by Mike Isaac and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the brilliant Travis Kalanick, Uber’s mercurial former CEO, who, unfortunately, falls prey to self-obsession and bad choices that eventually lead to his ouster from the company in a boardroom coup. Also starring in the series are Kyle Chandler as Bill Gurley, a venture capitalist betting on Uber, and Uma Thurman, who plays businesswoman Arianna Huffington. Gordon-Levitt compares the story to a “rock-star biopic,” with all its thrilling highs and devastating lows. His decision to play Kalanick came from a desire to portray characters with real flaws. “A lot of characters that you see in various shows and movies are more simplified. They’re either a hero or a villain; you’re absolutely good or you’re absolutely bad,” he explained. “To me, that’s less interesting. Travis has, I think, in a lot of our zeitgeist become sort of a villain, but he really did have a lot of strengths as well. I spoke to a great many people who worked with him or were close with him and who were not necessarily shy about talking about the bad choices and the shortcomings of his, but also talked about how winning he was, how inspiring he was, how he was able to rally his company and get people excited and how smart he was, how able he
was to juggle a million things at once.” The series looks at how the history of Uber is checkered with ethically questionable actions that led to its meteoric success, and Kalanick’s role in that. “Travis’ whole thing was win at all costs,” Gordon-Levitt described. “He didn’t care what he had to do to win; he just wanted to win. If that meant making people uncomfortable, that was OK; if that meant breaking the law, then that was OK. So it’s almost like a crime story, because Uber did systematically break the law. They wrote software that would automatically avoid the regulators, the people who are in charge of trying to enforce laws — the laws that are in place to ensure the safety of people riding in taxicabs.” Gordon-Levitt elaborated: “Now Travis was, I think, right in that, in his opinion, those laws were all corrupt and they were there to ensure that the taxicab business owners and the lobbyists and the regulators all stayed comfortable, and they weren’t good for the actual drivers or the riders. I think he was part right, but he was also, I think, part wrong, and he ultimately sort of became as damaging as the people he was trying to fight.” A summary of the whole thing comes from billionaire Mark Cuban, who knew Kalanick personally and who GordonLevitt talked to before taking on the role. “What Mark would say was, for Travis, his strength was he could knock down any wall — but his weakness was he saw everything as a wall.” Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber — which comes from the minds of Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the team behind Showtime’s Billions — serves as a cautionary tale of sorts, warning the world of what can happen when big, powerful companies decide to skirt not only laws but also morals. “I think that we as a world need to step in and say, ‘OK, OK, OK. You can’t just win at all costs and build these zillion-dollar companies at the expense of the rest of the world,’” said Gordon-Levitt. “We have to look out for the good of everybody, not just for the stockholders of these unicorns.” – Taylor Neumann Premieres on Showtime Sundays beginning Feb. 27 9
WHAT’S NEW
This high-stakes thriller starts in Ukraine six months after the collapse of the USSR and begins with a fairy tale of sorts. This one is about a young girl who loved her father. She grew up in a world full of great cruelty, where her father protected her and taught her to kill or be killed. But we soon learn this is a very different kind of fairy tale, as the series quickly flashes forward to present-day New York, where we meet the stunning Elena
Federova (Morena Baccarin), an international arms dealer and brilliant criminal mastermind, now in the custody of the FBI, U.S. attorney and Homeland Security. They, however, quickly learn that they’ve messed with the wrong woman. Their only hope at stopping her is a mistreated federal agent, Val Turner (Ryan Michelle Bathe), who Federova has taken an interest in. What Federova’s true endgame is remains a mystery, and so begins a captivating game of cat and mouse between the two women. Premieres on NBC Mondays beginning Feb. 21
PLAYING CAT AND MOUSE Morena Baccarin as Elena Federova Playing Federova over Agent Val Turner is so much better because …? She gets to have all the fun and be one step ahead, always. She gives Val and the audience just enough to trust her but always has more up her sleeve. She’s playing a long game. I will say Ryan is the best and smartest scene partner. These are nuanced scenes where the game of cat and mouse can’t get too cute or we lose the audience. Fans are going to love this because …? They will go on a very fun ride where they think they know what’s coming but will hopefully always be surprised by what is actually going on. Nothing is what it seems. What’s your character’s biggest vulnerability? My family. I’ll just leave it at that so I don’t give too much away. When not acting, what do you find thrilling to do these days? Spend time with my kids. There is never a dull moment. Not with three of them (ages 8, 5 and 10 months). 10
Ryan Michelle Bathe as Agent Valerie Turner Playing Agent Val Turner over Federova is so much better because …? Well. That’s a trick question because I think both are pretty cool! Fans are going to love this because …? Watching how all of this comes together is going to keep you on the edge of your seat. What’s your character’s biggest vulnerability? How much she loves the people in her life. When not acting, what do you find thrilling to do these days? Hanging out with two of the most amazing kids on the planet, Andrew and Amare.

SEASON PREMIERE!
The spy and the assassin have a date for one last deadly dance. The tale of Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) comes to an end in the fourth and final season of BBC America’s acclaimed drama Killing Eve. As Eve drifts deeper into the spy underworld and further from her “normal” life, Villanelle is making some major life changes with a new community. Meanwhile, Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) is going to extremes to track down the group of assassins known as “The Twelve” and find out who ordered the killing of her son. Laura Neal (Sex Education) takes over as lead writer for the final eight episodes, which AMC Networks claims will build toward “a messy, nuanced and totally glorious series finale.” “Killing Eve has been the most extraordinary journey and one that I will be forever grateful for,” Comer says. “Thank you to all the fans who’ve supported us throughout and come along for the ride. Although all good things come to an end, it’s not over yet. We aim to make this one to remember!” Premieres on BBC America Sundays beginning Feb. 27
ADULTS ADOPTING ADULTS
NEW SERIES!
In many parts of the United States, it is legal for adults to adopt adults as long as both parties consent. Why would people even consider this? Some want grandparents. Some want grandchildren. Some want stability. Some want to leave a legacy. Whatever their motivation, A&E turns the cameras on six different pairs who are considering adding an adult family member to their household. Are they being catfished? Does a criminal background cause alarm? There’s lots to learn before adoptions are finalized. Premieres on A&E Mondays beginning Jan. 31

Sam Waterston as Jack McCoy in a 2000 episode of Law & .Order Waterston will reprise the character in the show’s revival.

SEASON PREMIERE!
Law & Order fans were bummed last summer when plans for yet another spinoff in the franchise, slated for the fall and with a subtitle of For the Defense, were scrapped. But just a couple of months later, another announcement lifted those fans back up when it was made known that creator/executive producer Dick Wolf’s Law & Order — the original flagship series that launched all the spinoffs — itself would be returning for Season 21 after about a 12-year hiatus (its first 20 seasons ran from 1990-2010). “There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” says Wolf of his first baby’s return. “This is mine.” The influential drama racked up more than 50 Emmy nominations during its first two decades, winning for Outstanding Drama Series in 1997. Wolf and the rest of the creative team are not messing with success; Law & Order will continue the classic bifurcated format established during its original run, with each episode looking at the stories of, as the famous intro narration states, “two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime; and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders” in a given case. Sam Waterston will return as District Attorney Jack McCoy, a role the actor originally played from 1994-2010, and for which he earned three Emmy nominations. “Very few casting announcements have ever given me this much pleasure,” Wolf says, regarding Waterston. “Since day one, Sam has had perfect pitch when it comes to Jack McCoy as a character who both reflects and expands our ability to understand the law. He is the ultimate conscience of the show.” Also back is Anthony Anderson as Detective Kevin Bernard, a role he originated in Season 18, and Wolf adds, “With both Sam and Anthony returning, it shows that the 21st season is merely a continuation of where we left off.” In other casting known at presstime, Camryn Manheim, who guest-starred as different characters in Seasons 1, 3 and 4, is now a regular; she portrays Lt. Kate Dixon, successor to S. Epatha Merkerson’s Lt. Anita Van Buren (Merkerson’s current regular role on Chicago Med will keep her from returning to Law & Order). New cast members include Jeffrey Donovan as a yet-to-be-named NYPD detective; Hugh Dancy as a yet-to-be-named assistant D.A.; and Odelya Halevi as Assistant D.A. Samantha Maroun. Law & Order kicks off NBC’s Thursday primetime lineup, and leads into its Special Victims Unit and Organized Crime spinoffs. There’s no word yet on whether the original will cross over with either or both of its spawn, but given Wolf’s tendency to love crossovers with his series, it seems likely that it will at some point. — Jeff Pfeiffer Premieres on NBC Thursdays beginning Feb. 24

WHAT’S NEW
NEW SERIES!
Executive producer and writer Courtney Kemp continues to build her Power empire with this latest spinoff that follows fan favorite Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora) as he leaves New York for good after losing Ghost, LaKeisha and the only city he has ever known. Chicago was supposed to be a quick stop, but instead he finds himself straddling the line between the city’s two biggest drug crews, breaking all the rules — once again — in his quest for total power. There he meets up with Diamond (Isaac Keys), who’s not too happy to return to the streets after a 15-year sentence and find Tommy trying to run the show. Keys, a former NFL linebacker before he turned to acting, tells that in the Power universe there’s limited trust and a lot of action. Here he shares some of the details of the new series. The Power universe is unstoppable. What did you do when you learned you got the role? When I got the role, there was a lot of yelling. There was a lot of F-bombs. There was a Michael Jordan jump in the air, and a Tiger Woods fist pump. So, it was one of those things where I knew the role. When I read the role, I was like, “This is me.” The physical description, the struggle, those type of things. A lot of times as actors, we don’t get those type of roles that 16
you feel align exactly with you, but let alone actually get the role. What is Diamond’s connection with Tommy? Diamond has been locked down for 15 years in prison for some things and his dealing with his organized crime syndicate he calls CBI (Chicago Brothers Incorporated). When he comes out, all of a sudden he hears this new name of Tommy. He’s like, “Who’s this guy?” So, the series opens up with him realizing somebody else is in the city that’s kind of messing up things. Writer Courtney Kemp is big on her characters all having some kind of original sin in their journey. Is Diamond’s original sin the reason why he served time? He is part of an organized crime syndicate ... where he has to uphold a certain type of personality. He’s a certain type of person that people either fear, respect or are inspired by. That’s heavy on a person when they try to uphold that, even when they feel like they’ve changed. I think part of why he was locked up was because of him going through this evolution of who he wants to be, who he is and who he represents to the people around him. — Barb Oates Premieres on Starz Sundays beginning Feb. 6
