WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO SURVIVE?
As Doomsday Prepping Rises, Everyone Can Learn Some Survival Tips From “Alone.”
By Barb Oates“I’m going to fight this thing out to the last breath.”
“Stay focused.” “Think positive thoughts.” “It’s shortterm.” Those are just a few of the often-agonizing words of motivation contestants tell themselves in History’s Alone, now entering its 11th season (beginning Thursday, June 13). Alone is the ultimate test of human will, where survivalists are left in the wild to battle fierce predators, merciless weather, bitter cold and extreme isolation (there are no camera crews). The last one standing out of 10 competitors claims the prize of $500,000.
To date, Alaska native Roland Welker, who was 47 at the time, holds the record for the longest time surviving alone, logging in 100 days in Season 7.
This season, competitors will be dropped in Inuvik, Canada, which is within the Arctic Circle and the farthest north the series has ever gone. The season delivers some series “firsts,” including remarkable game harvests, clever inventions, painful medical mishaps and nerve-wracking animal encounters.
It also marks one of the longest-running seasons in series history. The survivalists push their skills to the limit, and sometimes beyond, in a fight to endure longer than all others.
Here are a few quick things we’ve learned over the seasons.
SOME TIPS TO LEARN
■ Being prepared is a crucial step in survival; proper planning and equipping yourself with the right tools is a must.
■ Prioritize a situation. Create a shelter first, forage for wood and food second.
■ Sleep deprivation diminishes your reaction time, memory, communication and decision-making abilities by 20% to 50%.
■ Ice should be at least 4 inches thick to walk on it.
■ Extreme cold weakens batteries.
■ You can’t change yesterday.

A QUICK RUNDOWN OF WHAT TO WATCH THIS MONTH
The Bad Orphan
Saturday, June 22 on LIFETIME ORIGINAL FILM!
Betsy Brandt became hooked on Hollywood after her first TV job playing opposite Amy Brenneman on Judging Amy.
“I’d never done anything on TV,” Brandt shares. “And I could not have been more lucky because Amy Brenneman is just wildly talented and she gave that to me. Once I did that, I was totally hooked.”
Brandt, however, would secure her TV fame by playing Marie, wife of Breaking Bad DEA agent Hank Schrader (Dean Norris) for five seasons and later reprising her role on the Better Call Saul finale in 2022. “I miss her all the time,” shares Brandt of her character. “I kind of still pinch myself that I was part of it.”
Brandt is back on the small screen with a new psychological thriller about a couple who, after years of trying to expand their family, adopt an orphan who might be more troubled than she at first
seems. “It’s a fascinating story,” Brandt tells us of the film. “It’s not what it looks like. They adopt this adorable child, and then the rug is pulled out from under them.”
Brandt, who was also an executive producer on the film, plays Jessica, a mother who begins to suspect something isn’t right with Gabby, the girl she’s adopted. “She would do anything for her family,” Brandt says of her character. “And I think as the story goes on and she questions this little girl that she adores, it’s tugging at her heartstrings. It’s kind of like no matter what she does, she looks at Gabby and wants to mother her and love her.”
“It’s a fascinating story. It’s not what it looks like.” BetsyBrandt
Newcomer Chloe Coco Chapman costars as Gabby in her first ever TV role.
“Chloe made my job incredibly easy because she is just really fantastic and a really special person. We were incredibly lucky. I don’t think this movie could have happened without her,” Brandt says. “Both these characters do things where they’re not their best selves. I leaned over to her after the first table read and I said, ‘It’s fun to be bad, isn’t it?’ She just got it. So, to watch her discover and experience that was incredibly fun for me.” — Zhanna Slor
Clipped
Tuesdays beginning June 4 on HULU NEW SERIES!
Few sports scandals have reached the level of public outrage as former Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s leaked audio recordings did; not only did he lose his position, but he was also the first person ever to be banned for life from the NBA. Based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, this new limited series brings to life everything that went on behind the scenes during one of the most outrageous and infamous scandals of the century, which happened to coincide with the long-deemed “cursed” Clippers’ best season, due to the addition of iconic coach Doc Rivers, who is played by Laurence Fishburne.
“When I got the first six scripts from Gina [Welch, creator and showrunner], her approach to both the racism and the sexism in the culture of the Clippers was absolutely respectful, it was honest, it was fearless,” said Fishburne. “One of the reasons that I wanted to do this show is because it’s very rare when you run across material where people are willing to deal with issues like racism and sexism in an honest and frank way. And these scripts really did that. I also had the good fortune of having the opportunity to meet Doc before I got to work.”
“I don’t think the Clippers love reliving all of this over and over again, but I think it’s an important story for not just the NBA, but the sports world, for Los Angeles, for our whole world,” executive producer Ramona Shelburne added. “And even though people may not enjoy reliving all of that, it’s still a really entertaining watch.”
That it is. As much about Sterling (played skillfully by Ed O’Neill) as his ambitious, Instagram-worshipping assistant/mistress (Cleopatra Coleman) who leaked their secretly recorded conversations to the press — and the many downsides of seeking fame and fortune at any cost — the series explores what it means to have power (and money) in the time of the internet, where anyone has constant access to the celebrities they idolize and, sometimes, the keys to rocket themselves up to that status as well. It also examines the many cultural issues within sports and within L.A. that helped to create the controversy in the first place. Though it might help, one does not need to be a basketball fan to enjoy the show. It’s a characterdriven, compelling portrait of how to win (and lose) at more than just sports.

Orphan Black: Echoes
Sundays beginning June 23 on AMC & BBC AMERICA NEW SERIES!
In 2050, a young woman wakes up startled in a typical living room, unaware of how she got there. She has no memory of her past or who she is. She escapes the room to discover she’s in a Boston-area laboratory that can print human body parts and, presumably, an entire human being.
Two years later, “Lucy” (Krysten Ritter) has been in hiding, living in an RV close to boyfriend Jack (Avan Jogia) and his deaf teenage daughter Charlie (Zariella Langford). When an accident leads to a hospital visit, Lucy is detected by the sinister organization that created her. As she tries to evade capture, a chance encounter with a familiar face (Amanda Fix) sends Lucy down a deep rabbit hole.
This 10-episode sequel from creator/writer Anna Fishko and original series cocreator John Fawcett revisits the enigmatic Orphan Black universe. As Lucy tries to piece together the puzzle of who she is and why she was created, the franchise’s faithful fans will be engrossed trying to connect the dots between Echoes and its source material. — Ryan A. Berenz
Tatiana Maslany (center) in Orphan Black (2013-17)
“Black” Flashback
Sci-fi drama Orphan Black (2013-17) gained a cult following of “Clone Club” fans and made a star of Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2016 for her multiple roles in the series. Maslany played Sarah Manning, a young woman who discovers she is one of many Leda clones (276 clones in all, with 14 of them played onscreen by Maslany). Sarah and her sisters set out to solve the mysteries of their creation, which leads them into a dark world of conspiracies and moral complexities surrounding science, identity and the nature of humanity.
Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke)
House of the Dragon
Sundays beginning June 16 on HBO SEASON PREMIERE!
The Targaryens are at war in the long-awaited second season of the Game of Thrones prequel, which takes place 200 years prior to the epic Westeros battle for the Iron Throne and its even more epic fight against the White Walkers. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, this series follows two dueling Targaryen clans: one led by Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke), the widow of King Viserys (Paddy Considine), who died in Season 1, and the other by Viserys’ firstborn daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), now married to her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith). Alicent and Rhaenyra, childhood best friends until Alicent married
Rhaenyra’s father, are both out for power and vengeance in the new season — and so are their firstborn sons, both of whom are grown up and have their sights set on ruling. “It’s House of the Dragon on steroids,” shares Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays newly crowned King Aegon II. “It’s sort of an inflated version of everything that happened last season. It’s more dangerous. It’s more violent. There’s more at stake. It’s all the good stuff.”
Between all the dragons, backstabbing and peak cousin rivalry (when they’re not busy marrying each other), no matter what happens, the season will certainly be entertaining enough to distract and please fans who are still impatiently awaiting the next Game of Thrones novel, The Winds of Winter, which has been over a decade in the making. And did we mention the dragons?

Hotel Cocaine
Sundays beginning June 16 on MGM+ NEW SERIES!
In the late ’70s and early ’80s, the Mutiny Hotel in Miami was a hot spot for rock stars, athletes and celebrities. It was a house of hedonistic pleasures fueled by cocaine, and while the party raged inside the exclusive nightclub, a bloody war was being fought among drug smugglers, sex traffickers and law enforcement agencies outside. This eight-part drama centers on Roman Compte (Danny Pino), the manager who tries to maintain the hotel’s prestige, even as he becomes embroiled in his estranged brother Nestor’s (Yul Vazquez) criminal enterprise and is forced into being a mole for the feds. Michael Chiklis, Mark Feuerstein, Tania Watson and Laura Gordon also star. — Ryan A. Berenz

D-Day: The Unheard Tapes
Thursday, June 6 on HISTORY
It has been 80 years since June 6, 1944 — the historic “D-Day” when Allied forces began their invasion of Naziheld Western Europe during World War II, an operation that ultimately altered the outcome of the conflict. The brutal battles that ensued as the Allies fought their way inland into France from the beaches of Normandy have been chronicled in numerous books, documentaries and movies over the decades, but there are still things to see, hear and learn about that event that may be new to many, even history/war buffs.
Some of that material is found in History’s documentary event D-Day: The Unheard Tapes (this was a working title at presstime). The two-part special (both parts airing on the evening of June 6) tells the story of D-Day as it was lived on the ground, drawing from a trove of original recorded

interviews with British, American and German soldiers, and French eyewitnesses.
The extraordinary spoken testimonies have been sourced from museums, university archives and private collections, and include discoveries of material never previously digitized or heard publicly. They recall moments of bravery and fear, strategy, chaos and split-second decisionmaking, their memories taking us through the invasion as it unfolded.
According to History, the special adopts “an innovative new approach,” with these first-person audio interviews given new life by a cast of young actors lip-syncing in documentary settings, combined with archival footage and immersive documentary-style re-creations. — Jeff Pfeiffer
Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color
Mondays, June 3 & 10 on NAT GEO NEW SERIES!
Idris Elba is an executive producer of and narrates this four-part series (two hourlong installments airing on two nights) that reveals the contributions and sacrifices of the often overlooked Allied soldiers of color who served heroically during World War II — from the only all-Black combat unit to fight on the Normandy beaches, to a little-known Indian regiment of mule handlers who were pivotal to the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, and more.
Weaving historical dramatizations with curated archival footage, the series bridges the past with the present to highlight new perspectives on established histories. Personal narratives of soldiers through their neverbefore-aired oral testimonies and journal writings will be showcased, along with powerful accounts from their descendants — stories passed down through generations.
Each episode will focus on at least three extraordinary heroes from a key battle of the war: Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Dunkirk and the Battle of the Bulge.

Triumph: Jesse Owens and the Berlin Olympics
Wednesday, June 19 on HISTORY
On May 25, 1935, Ohio State University track and field athlete Jesse Owens needed less than an hour to set three world records and tie a fourth, making him among the top competitors expected to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Owens, being a Black American, would be traveling into the hornet’s nest of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany and its racist ideology of Aryan supremacy. Hitler assumed German athletes would prevail, but the Führer watched in dismay as Owens won a record-breaking four gold medals. Owens returned to America as an Olympic champion, but racial discrimination in his own country limited his ability to make a living. He worked menial jobs — even raced against horses for money — and had filed for bankruptcy and was prosecuted for tax evasion in 1966. This documentary from LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company is narrated by Don Cheadle and takes an indepth look at Owens’ legacy as an athlete, and as a simultaneously triumphant and tragic American hero. — Ryan A. The Real Housewives of Dubai
Sunday, June 2 on BRAVO (moves to Tuesdays beginning June 11)
SEASON PREMIERE!
It’s been a bit since we last left this flashy group of uber-wealthy expats living in the City of Gold (Dubai, which is located in the United Arab Emirates). While the freshman season saw some rivalries and solid friendships form, no conflicts arose out of Western norms and cultural clashes. We caught up with the series’ standout Caroline Stanbury, who was already famous for her role on of London. Stanbury had the most interesting storylines (and gossip) with her marriage to former Spanish footballer Sergio Carrallo and their 19-year age gap, along with the couple harvesting her eggs for future conception. Here, we caught up with the star, who shared the following:
On handling the other ladies’ shady comments: “You need to have rhino skin. When people you don’t particularly know pick up flaws in your character and maybe try to destroy your character, or make people think of you differently, it’s hard to deal with. Over the years, I have learned to not listen to the noise and be sure of who I am. I am a very loyal friend. I have the same friends in Dubai as the ones I made when I moved nine years ago, and the same friends still in the U.K.”
On remaining positive for Season 2: “Over time, I realized I was more relaxed as I got to know the girls better. I understood who they were more and I decided to go into Season 2 a lot more me, and do my thing and focus on the person I am, not react to my surroundings. For Season 2, I am more focused on my family and my friendships, and having fun. I wanted to have some fun.” — Barb Oates

On the morning of April 11, 1944, 22-year-old 2nd Lt. David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams join forces for this modern retelling of the 1990 film of the same name starring Harrison Ford. While both are inspired by the 1987 Scott Turow novel, this dark drama — following the journey investigating a horrific murder of an employee of Chicago’s district attorney’s office, after which one of their own is accused of the crime — takes a different approach that doesn’t necessarily follow
its predecessor, with an assortment of new characters and storylines included and a real shroud of mystery surrounding who the murderer really is. The cast is fantastic, and a real family affair, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing lead protagonist Rusty Sabich and his brother-in-law Peter Sarsgaard portraying lead antagonist/fellow prosecutor Tommy Molto, who are directly at odds with one another for the entire series. (Real-life husband and wife Bill Camp and Elizabeth Marvel also portray the district attorney and his wife.)
“For me, it makes everything more comfortable,” Sarsgaard told us about working with his wife Maggie’s brother. “It takes me a while to figure out how to say what I mean to people in a work environment, so if you already know how to speak to them about what you want, then it’s way easier.”
Unlike Gyllenhaal’s complicated, emotionally aggrieved Sabich (who Gyllenhaal plays with impressive intensity and range), Molto is not someone you find yourself rooting for, with a black-and-white, dogged approach to trying this high-profile murder case that at times comes across as disturbingly suspicious and makes his character rather unlikable. “I didn’t think of him that way at all,” Sarsgaard admitted. “I just thought of him as somebody that was very fixed in the way that he saw things, in terms of justice. And he is a very envious person. I always felt like [he] was on the side of truth. [He] wasn’t the one who was lying all the time. I don’t think [he] lied at all in the entire show.”
This is saying a lot for a series where everyone seems to be hiding something. Which is surely frustrating to deal with in a murder trial but makes for very compelling TV. — Zhanna Slor
Land of Women

The show was shot in both English and Spanish, and both versions will be available. “When you’re dealing with themes of love or parenting or divorce or pain, these are universal themes,” Longoria shared. “[The multiple languages] make a very rich, fun environment because one big source of comedy is miscommunication.”

The long-awaited and muchanticipated fourth season of the satirical hit about a group of corrupt superheroes and the humans who try to take them down — aka The Boys — picks up after the events of the spinoff series Gen V. It will showcase Victoria Neuman’s (Claudia Doumit) attempts to secure a seat in the Oval Office during a time of peak instability in the country following the public downfall of the beloved leader of The Seven, Homelander (Antony Starr), who is more unhinged than ever, now that he’s lost the one thing he cared about in life, which was the wholehearted adoration of millions of fans. But he’s got his son on his side, who he is grooming as another potentially sociopathic murderer; so really, the loss of some admirers won’t be stopping him anytime soon.
Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), with only months left to live, is down and out at the start of the new season; he has lost his dead wife’s son to worst-father-ever Homelander and is on the outs with the rest of the superhero-fighting team he instigated back in Season 1. (Fingers crossed they take him back into the fold!) Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins the cast this season as well, which will certainly be interesting, as it’s unclear whose side he will be on.
“Season 4 could be our best season yet,” shares showrunner Eric Kripke. “It certainly makes me laugh the hardest, which might be my own sickness, I admit. It takes place during a contentious election year, where opposing factions threaten to rip society apart, all while Homelander sits trial. So, y’know, nothing like the real world.”
It certainly could be the best season yet, although that might be a challenge, considering every season has been pretty epic. But one of the most endearing aspects of this unique series is its unpredictability: so really, anything could happen. — Zhanna Slor
