“The longer you live, I think really the smarter you get ... and hopefully as an actress, that makes you a better actress, because you can understand things better.” Words of wisdom from the fascinating and elegant Eva Marie Saint, as told to TCM’s late host Robert Osborne in an interview that first aired in 2014. This special, Live From the TCM Classic Film Festival: Eva Marie Saint, is being replayed on July 4 on TCM, marking her 100th birthday. It’s also the first of four Thursdays celebrating her as Star of the Month, a tribute that includes 1954’s On the Waterfront (July 4). Her first feature film role, as the sensitive Edie Doyle, won Saint an Oscar as supporting actress opposite her Actors Studio colleague Marlon Brando. “I felt that he could see right through me,” she marvels, recalling that Brando’s unpredictable line readings for each take “kept you on your toes.”
She was so pregnant at the Oscar ceremony that she blurted, “I may have the baby right here” during her acceptance speech. (She gave birth to her son Darrell two days later.) Another career highlight: being chosen by Alfred Hitchcock to play one of his most memorable blond heroines, the “sexy spy lady” Eve Kendall in 1959’s North by Northwest (also airing July 4) opposite Cary Grant. Saint remembers Hitchcock escorting her to Bergdorf Goodman to choose her stylish wardrobe (“I called him my sugar daddy”) and Grant welcoming her to the set by promising, “In this movie, Eva Marie, you don’t have to cry.” Saint honed her craft in roles on radio and in the early days of live TV, earning two Emmy nominations in the 1950s and winning in 1990 for a supporting role in the NBC miniseries People Like Us. “Characters have to be interesting, as they are in life,” Saint told Osborne a decade ago. All eyes are on the City of Light Friday, July 26Sunday, Aug. 11 as the Summer Olympics return to Paris for the first time in 100 years. From its unique opening ceremony on the Seine to its displays of
sport. She can become the most decorated American Olympic gymnast with one medal of any color in Paris, and she can break the all-time record for most Olympic golds for an American gymnast if she can win two. Suni Lee, allaround gold medalist at the Tokyo Games, is hopeful for a repeat after battling kidney-related health issues. Jade Carey extended the USA’s streak of gold medals in the floor exercise to three with a win in Tokyo. Other likely competitors on the U.S. women’s team include uneven bars specialist Shilese Jones and Tokyo team silver medalist Jordan Chiles.

Seven-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky is the fifth American female swimmer to ever qualify for four Games. She’s expected to compete in four individual events, including the 800-meter freestyle, where she’s three-time reigning Olympic champ. If Ledecky wins three medals in Paris, she would become the second-most decorated American Olympic swimmer, trailing only Michael Phelps. Abbey Weitzeil, Lilly King, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Simone Manuel and Regan Smith will likely be among the other top U.S. women’s swimmers to watch. On the men’s side, look for Bobby Finke, Tokyo Games gold medalist in the 800-meter and 1,500meter freestyle, to defend his titles in Paris. Ryan Murphy, the former world-record holder in the 100-meter backstroke, hopes to add to his tally of four Olympic golds. After taking time off, seven-time Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel returned to competition last year and is poised to make another splash in his third Games.

There is probably no safer bet in the world of sports than Team USA winning Olympic basketball gold. Steve Kerr coaches this men’s squad, which is an incredible collection of NBA talent: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Joel Embiid, Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Jrue Holiday, Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton. The women’s team has won gold in seven straight Olympic tournaments. Head coach Cheryl Reeve’s roster features Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Jewell Loyd and Sabrina Ionescu. Star WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark, somewhat controversially, did not make the team.

The opening ceremony will be held outside an Olympic stadium for the first time, as the Seine River banks and the Jardins du Trocadéro, a green space across the river from the Eiffel Tower, will attract roughly 500,000 spectators. Nearly 180 boats and barges will carry the 10,500 athletes down the Seine in the Parade of Nations. Other key locations are:

USA Track & Field boasts some elite athletes expected to haul in the medals in Paris. Noah Lyles, who took the bronze in the 200-meter sprint in Tokyo, won three golds at the 2023 World Championships. He’s expected to run in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, and the 4x100-meter relay (and possibly the 4x400 relay) in Paris. Other U.S. speedsters on the men’s team include Tokyo silver medalists Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek and Grant Holloway. On the women’s side, Sha’Carri Richardson missed the Tokyo Games due to a suspension, but she’ll aim to become the first American woman to win the marquee 100-meter dash since Gail Devers in 1996. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone looks to become the first ever repeat winner in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.
BREAKING?
Remember the early 1980s when breakdancing emerged from the burgeoning hip-hop culture of New York City to spend a couple of years in the mainstream? Well, it’s an Olympic sport now. Olympic breaking consists of 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls competing in solo battles to impress the nine judges. American B-Boy Victor Montalvo, 2023 World Champion, is a gold-medal favorite in Paris. Lithuanian B-Girl Dominika “Nicka” Banevicˇ, age 17, is also a top contender for gold.

FUTURE GAMES
The 2026 Winter Games will take place in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The Olympic flame will burn again in the States when Los Angeles hosts the Summer Games in 2028, and then head Down Under for the 2032 Summer Games in Brisbane, Australia (where it will be meteorological winter). Sites for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games are expected to be announced this month, with potential hosts including Salt Lake City, the French Alps and Switzerland.

Get ready to swim with the sharks this summer! National Geographic will be presenting a marathon of shark-related content for nature lovers, including Shark Beach With Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast (June 30), Supersized Sharks (July 1), Baby Sharks in the City (July 2), Shark Attack 360 (July 2), Attack of the Red Sea Sharks (July 7) and June 30th’s Shark vs. Ross Edgley, in which marathon swimmer and British athlete Ross Edgley will test the limits of the human body by pushing himself to swim at the speed of a mako shark, among other sharklike activities. We recently sat down with the record-breaking swimmer, who was the first person to swim around the mainland of Great Britain (1,780 miles in 157 days), in 2018.
You’ve done some wild and impressive things in the past. What inspired you to do this show?
Ross Edgley: When I swam around Great Britain, somewhere around the top of Scotland, in the Outer Hebrides, we got caught in an arctic storm coming from Iceland. So, I’m swimming in these 6-foot waves, just getting smashed. This basking shark came over and was looking at me like, “Why are you making such hard work of swimming?” Because just one flick of its tail and it traveled eight of my strokes. Obviously, we’ve extensively studied all types of sharks, but no one’s ever eaten as much as a tiger shark or tried to propel themselves out of the water like a white shark. That’s where the idea was born.
What did you eat to do that? Pretty much everything. First, it was all about nutrient-dense foods. But then it just got to the point where I was like, where are the burgers? Where’s the ice cream? Tiger sharks can just go for miles and not eat, but when they can find something like a whale carcass, they can just chow down. We fed one this giant lollipop and it took a bite out of it and to know that it was doing 25,000 calories in a single bite compared to mine in an entire day, it just put things into perspective.
Are you going to be swimming with sharks at any point, or are you just copying what they do? Yeah, that was amazing. There was this huge 14-foot female white shark off the coast of the Neptune Islands in Australia, and she just came over. She just could sense my heartbeat and she was completely homing in on me, not the other divers, because she knew that I was the most nervous and I didn’t quite know what I was doing. That was my first experience diving with white sharks. It was amazing how she picked that up. Then we went and dove with the hammerhead queen. She was just massive. Hammerheads are so interesting. They scan you as they’re going over the seabed, but they go, “You are not quite on our menu.” I mean, they could mess you up if they wanted. — Zhanna Slor

Dwight Manfredi is the toughest man in any room. He’s also usually the smartest.
Sylvester Stallone easily swaggers into character as this stone-cold killer, who’s also a philosophizing mobster holding tight to his own code of ethics, in Tulsa King.
While at the top of his game, Dwight takes the fall for someone else and ends up serving a 25-year stretch in prison. Upon release, he looks to return to that familiar life but the mob exiles him to Oklahoma, where he embarks on establishing a new criminal enterprise.
It’s impossible to imagine any other actor in the role. Creator Taylor Sheridan is a veteran of putting movie stars at the center of his series (think Kevin Costner in Yellowstone, Harrison Ford in 1923), and when he wrote this, he had Stallone in mind. How could he not? Stallone, turning 78 this month, embodies old-school gangster. When Dwight (aka The General) strides into a room, in his exquisitely tailored suit, he commands respect.
CBS airs the first season of the Paramount+ series this summer, with the streaming network airing Season 2 later this fall. During a break from shooting the second season in Atlanta, Stallone chats from his trailer.
What excites you about having a larger audience for Tulsa King, with CBS now airing it?
Sylvester Stallone: Well, it was an experiment the first year, but the character, which is quite different than your usual gangster, seems to have caught on. At first, people were not
aware that this show was even in existence. Being on CBS would only benefit the second season.
Some may dismiss Dwight as a well-dressed brute, but he’s very intelligent. What do you think of his philosophical bent?
Yeah, in this season, he’s quoting Oscar Wilde. Why is he always quoting people? Because he spent 25 years in prison reading Marcus Aurelius and things like that. It’s interesting. He’s an evolved thinker, yet he can’t break out of this gangster mode.
Are you writing this season?
I don’t write for other actors. I wrote the scenes I’m in. Every word you see coming out of my mouth is pretty much my philosophy.
Your daughter Scarlet plays Spencer on Tulsa King. What’s it like working with her?
At first, I was nervous, trying to give her all the tricks that’s taken me decades to learn. But I found she’s got presence, something you can’t manufacture. I’d like to say it’s from me, but actually her mother has unbelievable presence. Oh my God, but she just pops! I didn’t want her to be an actress. But I think it’s sort of in our blood and she’s now written a screenplay, which is astounding. I will read it this weekend.
You’ve played the tough guy forever, but what scares you?
My wife. And my daughters; they’re fearless around me. They’re not intimidated.
What do you consider your biggest successes professionally and personally?
Well, Rocky, of course, because that was out of the blue. I thought I was just making a film for drive-ins, the second bill. So, it’s all been a bonus for me. First Blood was a great character, too; Rocky’s the ultimate optimist, and Rambo’s the ultimate pessimist. They’re pretty close to different aspects of my personality. It’s really wonderful to play something that just comes naturally to you. If someone said, “I want you to play Hamlet,” I don’t think so.
What props do you have from your movies that you cherish?
I don’t hold on to too much; it’s like you’re stuck in the past

a little bit. As my wife goes, “Enough of this ego massage. You don’t need this anymore.” From Rocky, I keep the boxing gloves, the robe, the hat. Rambo, primarily the knife. The one thing from The Expendables are my pistols, which are very unique.
When were you starstruck?
I would say Paul Newman. I met him in an elevator in 1968. I just happened to be in a hotel, and I don’t know even know what I was doing at the Fontainebleau. He got in and I’m like, “Wow, that was interesting.” Muhammad Ali, I met him in person. But I’d never gone up to anyone, ever asked for an autograph. I was kind of shy about that. I’m always amazed at how some people, they’re just pretty bold and they go for it.
I also have to say, Telly Savalas. It was one of my first parts, on Kojak, and I had like a two-and-a-half-page monologue at the very end. We were shooting at probably 1 o’clock in the
morning, and Telly wanted to go home, no question about it. So, I started my monologue. And he goes, ‘Hey, you’re a bad cop — end of story.’ And he walked away. And that was the end of the show. Hey, what about my moment, my two-and-ahalf-page monologue? Wow, that’s star power.
What jobs did you have before making it in show business that influence you?
Where I really formed an outlook, believe it or not, was being an usher. Because when you’re an usher, you are literally not a human being. These people look at you and dismiss you, that’s incredibly rude. But there is no better film class in the world than watching the same film 30, 40, 50 times.
How many times have you watched Rocky (AMC is running a marathon of the films on July 4)?

“Season 4?” That was the succinct question filling Daveed Diggs’ DMs over the past year, the Snowpiercer star recalls. Fans wanted to know if and when the dystopian thriller would return after its cancellation by TNT in January 2023. Happily, the series was picked up by AMC this past March and the long-awaited fourth season premieres this month. “I didn’t give up hope,” the Tony winner (Hamilton) who plays the justice-seeking Andre Layton says. “I knew that there was a finished season of television that a lot of people liked, so at some point someone was going to show it. I am very happy it ended up at AMC, a place that understands this kind of show and its fans.”
In the third season’s finale, we saw the surviving remnants of the extinction-level global freeze make life-changing decisions after unceasingly circling the world in the 1,001-car-long titular train for nearly a decade. Their choice: Remain on Snowpiercer, fairly secure with engineer Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) running “The Eternal Engine,” or split the train in two and follow Layton into the back end of the train (nicknamed Big Alice, after its engine) to look for what Layton believed was a life-sustaining warm spot, in the Horn of Africa.
He was right, and as passengers debarked at their possible new home dubbed New Eden, the scene switched to three months later, when Melanie watched a missile explode in the air in the distance. Could it be an updated attempt to end the current ice age?
That missile plays an important part in the final season, which opens with Melanie’s closest allies Ben (Iddo Goldberg) and Till (Mickey Sumner) searching through the

frozen wastes checking for metal pieces that fell from the sky. What happens when the pair try to flee as menacing figures in white come up a hill toward them will change the story’s trajectory. Who are those people, where did they come from and what they do want? “The stakes are super high,” promises Diggs. Look for two new characters in the mix, played by Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Michael Aronov (The Americans).
Eight months later, New Eden isn’t exactly a tropical garden — think Alaska in the winter — but the inhabitants are working hard to make the settlement run democratically and sustainably. “It was the first time in three seasons that I got to shoot anything not on a train car,” Diggs notes. “We didn’t have to walk in a single-file line all the time! It was so beautiful.”
Layton is happier than ever at his new home: co-parenting his daughter with his baby mama Zarah (Sheila Vand) and his love Josie (Katie McGuinness). That is, until an enemy enters. “You can always count on danger at the end of the world,” the actor notes. Indeed. With menace at their doorstep, and unaware of what’s happening back on Snowpiercer, “the inhabitants will quickly discover that [New Eden] is not what was hoped for — or expected.”
Speaking of danger, AMC’s official trailer teases a quick image of Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean), Melanie’s longtime mentor and megalomaniacal villain. Last we saw the warped visionary who created and ran Snowpiercer like a fiefdom, he was inciting a coup on the train, and for everyone’s safety was placed in suspended animation in the same small railcar on the track that Melanie had barely survived. If he lives, how Wilford fits into the story of his beloved train is yet to be known. — Ileane Rudolph

Legendary naturalist and filmmaker Sir David Attenborough presents this six-part docuseries centering on mammals, the class of animals that thrived and spread across Earth following the extinction of the dinosaurs. These warmblooded, milk-producing vertebrates are found in all corners of the planet, and they’ve developed the ability to solve problems, socialize and raise their young. The premiere episode looks at nocturnal mammals and their heightened senses that allow them to be active at night. Other episodes look at aquatic species, creatures that live in frigid environments, desert dwellers and mammals that have made homes in the forest. Another episode looks at the challenges facing mammals in a rapidly changing world, and a bonus seventh episode goes behind the scenes to see how crews captured this incredible footage. — Ryan A. Shark Week, the granddaddy of all summertime shark stunts, returns for its 36th installment this year, with actor/wrestler John Cena serving as host.
Another notable personality involved with this year’s event is shark conservationist Paul de Gelder, who has brought his expertise to previous specials and returns for new programs this year.
One of those premieres is Great White Serial Killer: Sea of Blood (July 8), in which de Gelder and shark investigator Brandon McMillan work with locals in a Mexican fishing village to identify the great white shark behind three attacks in three years — two of them fatal — to figure out why this shark keeps coming back.
De Gelder is famously a survivor of a horrific shark attack himself. A diver with the Australian Navy, he was conducting an exercise in Sydney Harbor in 2009 when a bull shark grabbed him from underneath.
“[It] removed my hamstring and my right hand in the same bite,” de Gelder recalls of the terrifying incident, “and I was forced to swim back to my safety boat with one hand and one functioning leg through a pool of my own blood.”
If anyone would be justified in fearing or even hating sharks, it would be de Gelder, following this near-death experience. But it’s been the opposite.
“Before I was attacked,” he says, “I basically hated sharks. I didn’t understand their role. It was bred through ignorance of how important they were.
“As with all things, knowledge dispels fear. … I started to read and learn, and the more I learned about sharks, the more I realized how little we actually have to fear from them and how much they have to fear from us. So now I feel it’s my duty to speak up for this animal that doesn’t have a voice.” — Jeff Pfeiffer
