Awards Season Isn’t Quite Done Yet!

The Tony Awards Will Go On!

The writers strike continues to impact live TV events, including a few awards ceremonies that were originally planned for this month. The 76th Annual Tony Awards will go on as planned, airing live on Sunday, June 11 on CBS. The show went back and forth on whether it would air; however, in mid May it was announced that after appealing to the Writers Guild of America (WGA), an unscripted telecast will be broadcast.

Since the Tony Awards Management Committee presented an agreeable alternative plan, the WGA agreed not to picket the live event in New York City.

“Tony Awards Productions (a joint venture of the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing) has communicated with us that they are altering this year’s show to conform with specific requests from the WGA, and therefore the WGA will not be picketing the show,”

the guild said in a statement. “As they have stood by us, we stand with our fellow workers on Broadway who are impacted by our strike.”

The WGA had previously rejected the Tony Awards’ strike waiver request. The WGA statement noted that the rejection was due to CBS and Paramount, not the awards ceremony itself.

Oscar winner and Tony nominee Ariana DeBose will return for her second consecutive year as host, as planned. Musicals lead the way among the Tony nominees. Some Like It Hot is at the top of the field with 13 nominations, followed by three musicals that have nine nods apiece: & Juliet, New York, New York and Shucked.

The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which was originally scheduled to air on June 16, has been officially delayed due to the strike. Tony Awards: Credit: CBS

STARS ON MARS

Mondays beginning June 5 on FOX NEW SERIES!

Some celebrities act like they’re on another planet. Stars on Mars takes it a step further.

In this new unscripted series, 12 “celebronauts” will suit up and enter a simulated Mars habitat, where they live, eat, sleep and strategize in a Survivor-style game on a fake Red Planet. They’ll have to accomplish tasks from Mission Control, contend with the environment and make nice with their crewmates. One by one, the celebs will be voted off the planet and launched back to Earth until one Martian stands alone.

William Shatner, a man who knows a few things about Hollywood and spaceflight, will issue orders to the celebs from Mission Control. After decades at the helm of Star Trek’s starship Enterprise, the actor, now age 92, took a real suborbital ride aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard launch vehicle in 2021.

“It’s a rush. It’s incredible,” Shatner says of his astronaut experience. “It’s something out of a dream and a nightmare, going up into space. It’s all that dreamlike thing where you experience something that you’ve never experienced before, and also you realize it’s fraught with danger.”

The celebronauts will live in a Mars station replica built in the Australian Outback town of Coober Pedy, known for its opal mines. “It is one of the hottest, driest places on Earth,” Shatner says. The heat is so intense in Coober Pedy that most of the residents live in underground “dugouts,” making it the ideal place to simulate a confined colony.

The rust-colored, rocky terrain is also a perfect setting. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory once gave Shatner a virtual-reality view of Mars with footage captured by a rover. “I used these 3D goggles, and everywhere you turn, you’re looking at the landscape of Mars,” he says. “So I’ve gotten a real vision of it, and it’s not unlike Coober Pedy.”

While the show is tongue-in-cheek and the goal is entertainment, there’s something to be learned from this experiment. It is inevitable that a few humans will be interplanetary celebrities for setting foot on Mars. “As an outpost in moving mankind around the solar system and the adventure of knowledge, it certainly is going to happen,” Shatner says. “The journey to Mars is closing in, but Stars on Mars will get there first.”

TLC FOREVER

Saturday, June 3 on LIFETIME

This powerful behind-thescenes documentary about one of the most influential female groups in music history, R&B trio TLC, follows remaining members T-Boz (Tionne Watkins) and Chilli (Rozonda Thomas) down memory lane as they prepare for their

upcoming summer tour.

TLC was formed in Atlanta in 1991 by mutual acquaintances when the three were barely old enough to drink — Chilli and Left Eye (Lisa Lopes) were 20, and T-Boz was 21 — and what the women remember most from the

early days was their innocence.

“We were so excited to live out our dreams,” Chilli told us.

“I think we had the most fun because we didn’t know how important it was at the time to be in control of your business and all that kind of stuff. We were

WHAT’S NEW 6
T-Boz and Chilli

just having fun and we were so excited.”

During the ’90s and early 2000s, TLC won four Grammy Awards, sold millions of records and launched countless hit songs on Billboard Hot 100 charts. Behind the scenes, though, as the documentary shows, the women were dealing with many challenges too, such as T-Boz’s lifelong struggle with her health. Business disagreements often led to drama between the members and their staff; the band declared bankruptcy at the height of their fame. “Our drama wasn’t catty like regular girls. It was just life drama,” T-Boz explains. “Business and stuff like that.”

“When I got in the group, we just really clicked,” Chilli adds. “It was just a natural chemistry that was there on day one. Then the love started growing, the friendship part of it started growing — us as sisters — all of that started growing. It was us against everyone else. We never had any type of jealousy toward each other at all. Our beef was always with business and stuff like that. And then, obviously, when our sister, Lisa, would act out a bit, but it was always business related. It was never her looking at me and Tionne as if she didn’t like us. Nothing stupid or petty like that.”

Lopes, whose notoriously heated relationship with NFL wide receiver Andre Rison was headline news for weeks after she burned his house down,

almost went to prison for arson in 1994.

“She didn’t mean to do it. But you got the whole world talking about you. You’re on CNN every day,” T-Boz recalls. “It’s crazy, because O.J. Simpson is the one who finally kicked us off CNN.”

Then tragedy struck hard in 2002, when Lopes died in a car

the remaining members of TLC returned full force to their music. By then, both women had children to raise as well, and had to find a balance between motherhood and work, which they managed to do successfully while maintaining their roles in the music industry.

“We’ve never stopped touring. We’re always on the road. The

accident in Honduras, leaving the trio a duo. Having to grieve for their close friend, whom they both saw more as a sister, while maintaining a public presence proved difficult. The love Chilli and T-Boz still have for Lopes is palpable whenever they talk about her.

“When we were looking back at footage with the three of us, I got a little teary-eyed,” Chilli says about the making of the film. “That was very touching for me. I’m the crybaby in the group.”

“I’m not. I do not cry like that,” T-Boz adds. “Well, if I talk about my kids, I’ll cry. But I was happy to see the good times, when we were happy together and stuff. That was a great feeling.”

After their grief subsided,

only time that we weren’t able to tour, obviously, was during COVID,” Chilli shares. “Last year, we were in Europe and Australia. This year, it’s the U.S. tour.”

The tour, called Hot Summer Nights, kicks off June 1 and goes until July 14. It will include their No. 1 hit singles “No Scrubs,” “Waterfalls,” “Creep” and many other classics. Asked what they would like the world to remember them for, Chilli says, “Being authentic. We’re still, to this day, authentically us. And if we don’t feel it, we don’t believe in it, we’re not going to do it, we’re not going to say it.”

“Stand strong, believe in who you are, and don’t change that for nothing or nobody,” T-Boz adds.

NEW SPINOFF!

THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY

Sundays beginning June 18 on AMC NEW SERIES!

When fans said goodbye to the 12-year, 11-season run of The Walking Dead back in November, they knew they wouldn’t have to wait long to see some of their favorite characters return in a new brutal, postapocalyptic adventure. And the series’ most unlikely pairing — Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) — are the subjects of AMC’s new Dead City. The two justifiably have been at war with one another for most of the series, as Maggie’s beloved husband Glenn died from Negan bludgeoning him with his infamous barbed-wire

bat in what was one of the series’ most appalling and heartbreaking deaths. While you would have never imagined that this character could be redeemable, Negan did begin to atone for his sins and made some significant sacrifices that allowed for him to survive (and occasionally that self-serving sarcasm we came to love did come through). Now the two head to Manhattan, which has long been cut off from the mainland, where they see the dead being used as weapons, and they desperately search for Maggie’s son Hershel. Here Cohan tells us what we can expect.

How much of a time gap is it since we last left Maggie and Negan? And what’s New York like?

Lauren Cohan: It’s covered in zombies. We haven’t exactly

pinpointed it, but I would say it’s a few years into the future.

Where do we pick up with Maggie? Where are you?

Maggie’s a few years into the future and in a place that maybe she’d hoped to move on from or be in a different place in her life, but that’s not the case. She’s searching for her son and needs the help of Negan on this mission, and it’s somebody that she never thought she’d have to see again, let alone deal with all the emotions that they bring up.

When we last left you two, Maggie said she didn’t want to hate Negan anymore. How’s that working out?

It’s a great plan, and it’s a great hope that she has to be able to somehow put something to rest so that she can move on and not

3
8 WHAT’S NEW
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan

be consumed by the rage. But I think the combination of not having processed any of the grief really and going away from the source of the pain hasn’t made her process it. And it’s only by being forced back into it that we see that she’s reverted a little bit. He’s reverted a little bit, and they both have been sent on a slingshot, pulled back only to be thrust forward into crazy extremes of this raw circumstance. So it’s really challenging. It’s a really conflicted journey.

What other demons is Maggie challenged with?

I think, honestly, it’s so difficult to fathom the level of pain and loneliness and the parts of self that are just shut down in order to live this life. We’re talking about someone 15 years into the apocalypse. ... The most flavorful part of this whole story is the complexity of human emotion and this kaleidoscope of pain and tension and need and unwillingness, and who can you trust and where can you turn and how do you keep going?

What’s the New York zombie scene look like?

The New York scene for us is different. We meet different people. We meet people who have learned to survive. There’s a sense of the New York spirit inserted into an apocalypse, which I think everybody would be excited to see that cocktail. And we get to show the people that are still living, and we get to show the sea of the dead and then we’re stuck on this island.

Once you get on, you can’t get off. And that’s something that Maggie and Negan don’t know going in. And it’s entering, really entering, the dark night of the soul — both on the island and in ourselves.

Who’s this new character

Marshal Perlie Armstrong (played by Gaius Charles), and who should we be worried about?

We should be worried about him; he’s not our biggest bad in the show, but he has a drive that is unstoppable and that’s what makes him so threatening. ... I think so many characters who have to follow a rule of law to the letter, it’s often protecting the great vulnerability within them. And that’s something that definitely exists for Perlie. ... I find myself just enjoying Gaius and Željko Ivanek [who plays The Croat] and watching them, and just pinching myself at the luck of this.

And how bad is The Croat?

The Croat is really a new level of sinister. I don’t want to say too much about how he came to be who he is, because that’s a part of the story, but you think you’ve seen all kinds of evil represented in the world and sinister things, and obviously our king sinister, Negan. And then you see this whole new level of sport in evil that somebody has, and yet also these vulnerable, heartbreaking colors. And that’s what’s been so exciting about the show, is nobody conforms to any cut-and-dried sort of label.

So if we thought Negan or The Governor was a 10, how is he? Remember in Spinal Tap when they want the amp to go to 11? People may not know this reference, but The Croat is definitely, he’s definitely beyond 11 in what he represents and sort of forces.

Can you see the series going beyond the initial six episodes?

I think this could at least be five seasons. There’s so many wonderful ideas that spawned out of the characters from Season 1. It would be my absolute pleasure if we got to do this for a few years.

Is Maggie going to look any different? And did you have any say in what she might be wearing?

I went and built my whole wardrobe. I found all these pieces in thrift shops and leather makers. I just built it as close to the ideal as I could without real sewing skills. ... I didn’t want a costume that suddenly felt like a total departure from that. I knew that going into New York and telling this story of this sort of darker, deeper color of her was going to give me an opportunity to just say, “How are you hardened?” This deep blue leather jacket that I found just felt like the emotion of her. And it was in so many ways emblematic to me of the sadness of her soul and the drowning of the surrounds of the island. And then there’s all this great resource in her wardrobe. ... You’ll see as a season unfolds, but it’s like my outfit itself is a weapon.

OUTLANDER

Fridays beginning June 16 on STARZ

SEASON PREMIERE!

The end of Droughtlander is in sight, as Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) continuing love story returns for the seventh season beginning this month. Starz delivers a walloping 16-episode season, with the first eight episodes airing this year, and the second half set to arrive in 2024. An eighth and final season is on the horizon, along with a prequel spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which centers around Jamie’s parents. When we last left Claire and Jamie, they were once again separated. This time, it was at the actions of a vengeful Richard Brown (Chris Larkin), who sent the spouses barreling off in different directions with Claire heading to Wilmington to be tried for Malva Christie’s (Jessica Reynolds) death (she was the one who claimed Jamie fathered her unborn child). And then Jamie was sent to the coast where he was to be deported back to Scotland. Thankfully, fates were changed as Young Ian (John Bell) helped rescue his uncle and put forth plans to free Claire. Whether they get to her in time is the cliffhanger we were left with. The Season 7 premiere episode is concerningly titled “A Life Well Lost,” which doesn’t sound too promising, although the following episode is far more hopeful with a title of “The Happiest Place on Earth.” As for the series’ beloved iconic theme song, “The Skye Boat Song,” it will again be refreshed to speak to the upcoming storylines, this time performed by Sinéad O’Connor.

MARY J. BLIGE’S STRENGTH OF A WOMAN

Saturday, June 17 on LIFETIME

When Grammy-winning superstar Mary J. Blige originally wrote her hits “Real Love” and “Strength of a Woman,” she was searching for love, but ultimately found it in herself. Now these songs serve as the inspiration for two Lifetime original movies debuting this month, where Blige serves as executive producer. The films, titled after each song, tell the ongoing journey, stretched across time, between 18-year-old Kendra (played by Empire’s Ajiona Alexus, who is also releasing a new single in June, “Made for Me”), as she heads off to college, and Ben (played by BMF and All American star Da’Vinchi), the man who ultimately changes her life forever. This is an emotional (both stars warn to bring the Kleenex!) and complicated two-movie drama about pursuing dreams and learning about true love along the way. Here the stars share more.

What touched your heart when reading the scripts and listening to these songs?

Ajiona Alexus: There’s an authentic connection between the scripts and the songs that’s heartfelt. I couldn’t help but to reflect on my own experiences and the experiences of others I know. Watching Kendra and Ben navigate the challenges of life while searching for real love are the moments that will melt your heart.

Da’Vinchi: I am a lover boy at heart, so I was moved by the love story. When I first read the script, I could relate to it. I also think the viewers will relate to the story because this is a story people can see themselves in.

What do you think audiences will appreciate about your characters and their journey?

Alexus: Kendra’s resilience and strength. She doesn’t allow life’s challenges to get in the way of her passion for photography. Regardless of her past, she’s determined to create a better life for herself and her family.

Da’Vinchi: Ben’s honesty throughout the film. For example, many men have poor qualities in today’s society, but they hide those qualities to make themselves seem like a better man. However, Ben is honest about his mistakes and expresses his honesty throughout the film.

THE LAZARUS PROJECT

Sundays beginning June 4 on TNT NEW SERIES!

It’s like Groundhog Day all over again in this gripping, heartbreaking, time-traveling drama. Paapa Essiedu, from HBO’s I May Destroy You, stars as George, an average guy who finds himself in an extraordinary situation when he starts to relive the same few weeks over and over again.

George learns he’s a “time jumper” and gets recruited by The Lazarus Project, a top-secret multinational organization dedicated to preventing and undoing mass extinction events through diplomatic or scientific means. In other words, their job is to save the world from destroying itself at all costs — even if it means going back in time and changing things to do so.

“We shot this show during peak lockdown back in January 2021, so it was like no one was allowed to leave their house, a real sense of existential threat in the world,” Essiedu tells us. “This show was initially called Extinction, so it felt apt to be jumping headfirst into it. I fell in love with this script from the first page, from the first episode. … The writer, Joe Barton, has a very unique, idiosyncratic, genre-spanning and genre-jumping voice.”

While The Lazarus Project is willing to reset the clock after events like the dropping of an atomic bomb, civil wars and worldwide viruses, it refuses to help George when things get personal.

“You’ve got to remember that this is a super-normal dude. He’s an app developer who finds himself in a very extraordinary situation. He’s riding high off of [being recruited into this group], until something happens that takes something away from him, that personally affects him. And he’s put in a position of, basically, do you do your job, or do you look after your personal life?

“When you’re forced to choose between the people that you love and your sense of responsibility for the world at large, it’s super, super hard,” Essiedu concludes. “We see George go on a roller-coaster journey of chaos until we finally get an answer to on what side of the line he lies.”

THE LUCKIEST GUY IN THE WORLD

Tuesdays, June 6-13 on ESPN NEW SERIES!

He’s a Basketball Hall of Famer, a two-time NCAA champion, a two-time NBA champion and the undisputed tallest member of the Grateful Dead Hall of Honor. It could be none other than the legendary Bill Walton, the repeatedly self-described “Luckiest Guy in the World.”

Steve James (Hoop Dreams) directs an immersive 30 for 30 documentary for ESPN looking back at Walton’s incredible career on the court, and his socially and politically conscious life off of it. “The Luckiest Guy in the World” debuts June 6 (Episodes 1-2) and June 13 (Episodes 3-4), and features a trove of interviews, archival footage, home movies and intimate conversations with Walton as he visits meaningful places in his life.

It also explores how Walton overcame adversity, including a stutter that made him shy and quiet in his youth. He’d go on to win a Sports Emmy for broadcasting. “To this day, speaking is the hardest part of my life,” he says. He’s also dealt with the breakdown of his body, which began early with multiple orthopedic operations in high school.

The basketball star from the San Diego area’s Helix High School went on to play for legendary coach John Wooden at UCLA, where he won two NCAA championships. “Bill’s mentality was to win everything,” says Larry Bird. “And he’s pretty spoiled, because at

UCLA they won almost everything.” Almost everything: UCLA’s loss to NC State in the 1974 Final Four still haunts Walton.

Walton embraced the early ’70s counterculture and was arrested at an anti-war protest at UCLA. “There was so much positive energy and knowledge,” he recalls. “That’s when I found the Grateful Dead.” His life changed when the band invited him backstage after a concert on campus. Walton says he’s been to over 1,000 Grateful Dead shows.

Walton was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, but undiagnosed stress fractures in his foot kept him mostly sidelined. “My first two years in the NBA were a disaster,” he says. “I was unprepared. I was undiscerning. I was unsuspecting.” Everything came together in the 1976-77 season, when Walton led the underdog Blazers to the franchise’s first NBA championship.

The film has already scored accolades as the TV Premieres Audience Award Winner at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in March. “This film is for people who want to learn, who want to understand. Who want to have a vision of what it was like,” Walton said at SXSW. “And so I just hope for the best. I’m trying to make it, trying to get to heaven before they close the door.”

New TiVo? Here Are Some Tips And Tricks

A TiVo DVR doesn’t just record Live TV with the click of a button. It also makes that TV-watching better, by recommending new shows based on your viewing history and allowing you to remotely schedule recordings with the TiVo app.

You can also use the voice control option on your TiVo DVR to simply tell it what you want! Just press the blue microphone on the TiVo voice remote and speak naturally. You can tell your TiVo DVR to change the channel, pause/rewind/fast forward a show, launch an app or search for a movie.

Things To Note

■ Right now, voice functionality is only available with the newer TiVo Experience. If you have the classic TiVo Experience, the voice remote will still work on your DVR, but without voice control.

■ Older TiVo remotes will work with the newer TiVo Experience, but you won’t have voice control functionality. If your current remote does not have a Back button, use the Zoom button to go back on any screen.

■ If you’re feeling left out, you can upgrade your remote for a one-time charge. Contact Midco (Midco.com/Contact) to get the new remote.
