Do The Hustle in the early 1980s, the strange and elaborate FBi sting known as Abscam resulted in corruption convictions for six U.S. congressmen, one senator and the mayor of Camden, N.J. More than three decades later, writer/ director david O. Russell (Three Kings, Silver Linings Playbook) used it as the inspiration for his American Hustle, which has netted three Golden Globe awards, four Critics Choice Awards, a Screen Actors Guild trophy, and 10 Oscar nominations. At the heart of the tale is Christian Bale’s irving Rosenfeld, a melancholy, toupee-wearing racketeer whose hard-knocks youth leads him to make a living in part from a chain of legitimate dry cleaning stores and in part from a sham loan operation to keep his neurotic, nail-polish-obsessed young wife Rosalyn (a scenestealing Jennifer lawrence) and their little boy in style. But irving longs for connection — which arrives in the form of Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), a flame-haired temptress whose duke Ellington charm bracelet lures him like a foundering ship to a beacon. Turns out Sydney’s a seasoned hustler, too, parlaying street smarts, plunging necklines and a knack for an English accent into her ticket out of Phoenix and into the Big Apple. in no time, she and irving are swooningly in love and raking in boatloads of other people’s cash — until they encounter ambitious FBi agent Richie diMaso (Bradley Cooper), who plans to make a name for himself by using these small fish to land a much larger catch. What ensues is a dazzling game of one-upmanship in matters of the heart, the conscience and the law, teeming with eye-popping ’70s fashion, sly performances from everyone involved (louis C.k. is a hoot as diMaso’s fish-tale-telling boss) and jolts of heartfelt emotion that keep you tethered to these characters as human beings, whether or not you’re sure you really know — or like — their hearts in the end.
