Shots Fired Inside: Top 10 Picks TV Everywhere New Releases New on HBO New on Showtime New on Starz New on Cinemax TV Entertainment Understanding Your Main Menu
FOX’s Shots Fired starts with the shooting of an unarmed white teen by the lone African-American officer in the police department of Gate Station, N.C. An investigation launched by the Department of Justice uncovers a similar case involving the death of a young black male, which failed to attract the same media attention and public outrage. Tasked with uncovering the truth behind the deaths are Preston Terry, a smart, cocky, Ivy League-educated Department of Justice prosecutor (Stephan James), and his tough-as-nails former cop turned DOJ investigator (Sanaa Lathan). The deaths of the two young men affect the small, racially divided community to its core, from the boys’ mothers (Jill Hennessy and DeWanda Wise) to the police department (Tristan Wilds, pictured; Stephen Moyer; and Will Patton) to the town’s religious leaders (Aisha Hinds) and even to the state’s governor (Helen Hunt). When describing the series at January’s Television Critics Association winter press tour, series co-creator Reggie Rock Bythewood evoked Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s seminal To Kill a Mockingbird, saying, “You never fully understand what a person’s going through until you can see it through their point of view.” Co-creator Gina Prince-Bythewood added, “And so in flipping the narrative, it allows folk who don’t normally identify with characters to empathize with them, and through empathy you can change.” Shots Fired — FOX — Wednesdays beginning March 22

SCENE STEALER The bar scenes in Passengers are said to be inspired by the bar scenes in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). Similarities include that in both films the bartenders are dressed alike, act in the same manner, have a strange friendship with the lead male, are not concerned with payment and are unable to leave. Another similarity: Just like the Overlook Hotel bar, the light source shines from below rather than above.

HAWAII, A BETTER IDEA The idea for Why Him? came from producers Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill while they were filming the 2012 comedy The Watch. “We were all standing there in the dark on this wet, claustrophobic stage saying how great it would be to do a movie in Hawaii,” recalls Levy.
