A Humorous Escape Celebrities Try To Get Out Of An Escape Room To Raise Money To End Child Poverty. By Barb Oates x Courteney Co
Lisa Kudro w
Imagine locking this group of comedic geniuses — Ben Stiller, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Adam Scott — in a tricked-out room of clues and puzzles. They’ve got 60 minutes to try to solve the clues and escape, but they’ve got Jack Black blurting out all sorts of distractions as their Game Master, so the pressure never lets up. Welcome to Celebrity Escape Room, a one-hour special airing on NBC Thursday, May 21, as part of the network’s annual Red Nose Day programming block that raises funds to end child poverty around the world. “I think the hardest part of the escape room was for everyone working together with a ticking clock,” tells executive producer Lee Metzger. “The puzzles themselves were not too hard, but one after another over the course of 60 minutes becomes difficult to stay focused and no two puzzles are alike. Everyone had a common goal, which was to escape, and in the process, they are playing against

Jack. Also, you’ll probably see a little Monica come out from Courteney when the pressure is on.” “Courteney and Lisa are a natural team, so they work together well,” adds Metzger. “Ben leads the team through, and Adam adds his own perspective to solving puzzles. They all brought something to the game; sometimes they overthought puzzles and other times missed them completely. Ben had probably done the most escape rooms outside the show, and there is a different way of looking at an escape room and recognizing what is a clue, a puzzle or a dead end, so his experience was a strength.” As for their relentless Game Master, Black brings a complete unpredictability to the show. “He was as entertaining to watch on camera as off,” Metzger concludes. “But at the same time, he reminded everyone why we were here and that’s to raise money for Red Nose Day.”

POSTPONED! Socially Distanced Shows
TV’s Biggest Tragedy — Live Sports Every major sporting league is on hold, and that’s where it hits us the hardest. There will be no Kentucky Derby in May as it’s been pushed to September, no Indy 500 until August, no Formula One Monaco Grand Prix, no French Open tennis until September, no Wimbledon this year and no Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo until July 2021. Opening day of Major League Baseball is delayed indefinitely. Golf’s PGA Tour events are canceled through mid May. The NHL and NBA have suspended play, Major League Soccer is taking a timeout for 30 days, and NASCAR won’t rev up again until possibly later in May. All of these changes alone leave hundreds of hours to be filled, most with repeats and some original episodes.
Scripted Series No season finales for some shows? That’s what we’re Kentucky Derby facing as our favorite shows pushed to September have all stopped production, and if they didn’t wrap filming prior to the pandemic, you’re not going to see many new episodes until after we get through this and/or will see shortened seasons with no real season finale. Upwards of 100 series and pilots are on hiatus — for example, all of the NCIS dramas, FBI and Young Sheldon on CBS; ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (21 of the 25 episodes were shot) and The Goldbergs; NBC’s Chicago franchise, Superstore (it’s unclear if/when Amy — America Ferrera — will get a proper sendoff) and Saturday Night Live; and more. The series finale of The CW’s Supernatural had yet to be shot before production halted, but expect the network to bring a satisfying conclusion to the 4
Completed In Time And for some good news — all 20 Season 3 episodes of ABC’s The Good Doctor are finished, as well as all 15 episodes of the sixth and final season of How to Get Away With Murder, so you’ll see those seasons through. Other series that have their episodes in the bag include The Masked Singer and Outlander.
Real-Time TV Comes To A Halt Also coming to a stop are several competition and reality series. ABC’s The Bachelorette and American Idol, and Season 33 of CBS’ The Amazing Race, which had been shooting in the U.K. when production halted (Season 32 debuts May 20), are all postponed. Shooting on CBS’ Survivor Season 41 (slated for next fall) was set to begin in late March in Fiji, but hasn’t even begun yet.
Fall TV Threat September’s fall TV kickoff may seem far off, but March and April were typically when the networks film their pilots. Since production on these could-be series has also halted, the broadcast networks may be left scrambling to fill holes in their 2020-21 schedules — or they may push the start of the new season to later in the year. Another reason for pilot delays is that current series have to wrap before actors can start work on new projects. For example, because The CW’s Supernatural called off production before finishing its last episodes, star Jared Padalecki may have to delay his next gig, headlining the network’s Walker, Texas Ranger reboot.

When you change the channel after getting the latest updates on the coronavirus pandemic from your preferred news network, you notice that regular programming is looking, well, rather irregular. The coronavirus forced many TV shows to suspend production, meaning several series have had their premieres or finales delayed. Sports, talk shows, and scripted and unscripted series are all experiencing cancellations, postponements and production shutdowns lasting a month, possibly longer. As of presstime, here’s how things are looking in the near and distant future.
show, possibly through a movie event. Other popular series on hold include AMC’s The Walking Dead Season 10 finale, which will air as a special later this Fargo delayed year (it was originally scheduled for April 12), and its new spinoff The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which had its debut pushed back. FX’s new Fargo has been delayed indefinitely. Streaming series including The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu), The Morning Show (Apple TV+) and the upcoming Lord of the Rings (Prime Video) are also on break. It’s still unclear what this means for many current-season episodes that have not been filmed. We anticipate that everything is going to push back to fall, and instead of season premieres, we’ll pick up where we last left off and keep going.

SNOWPIERCER A Thrilling, Edge-Of-Your-Seat Ride On Social-Class Divides And The Race For Survival. By Jeff Pfeiffer
W
ith the fearful, apocalyptic feelings associated with today’s coronavirus pandemic, it at first might not seem like the ideal time to premiere a series like TNT’s Snowpiercer, a dystopian sci-fi thriller set in a devastated postapocalyptic world. But with movies like Contagion and Outbreak — which eerily parallel our battle against a life-threatening virus — being some of the most-
streamed movies by viewers these days, there seems to be a cathartic release, and some hope, to be found in watching fictional characters fight against dire situations, as is the case with Snowpiercer. “I think art is useful in a few different ways,” offers Daveed Diggs, the Tony-winning star of Hamilton who headlines Snowpiercer and thinks the series has a vital place, especially now.
“One of those ways,” he continues, “is that, particularly with science fiction, if we use it as allegory for [our real world], it allows us to externalize it a little bit so that we can comment on it, so that we can have conversations that don’t feel as personal. But we can still talk about the things that are going on in our world. That’s one of the great functions of science fiction. “The other [thing] about 5

JENNIFER CONNELLY AS MELANIE CAVILL
Cavill is Snowpiercer’s Head of Hospitality. Connelly says of her, “The person you meet in Episode 1 is very different from the person you come to know by the end of [Season 1].”
ALISON WRIGHT AS RUTH WARDLE According to Wright, “My character [helps] everything run smoothly on the train.” Fanatically loyal, Wardle is a dedicated enforcer of the Order that defines class on Snowpiercer.
MICKEY SUMNER AS BESS TILL Brakeman Till is paired with Andre Layton to solve a crime. Sumner adds, “[Bess isn’t] confined to any class or carriage. I felt very lucky to have that freedom to be fully in the train.”
ANNALISE BASSO AS LJ FOLGER LJ is the nihilistic teenage daughter of the powerful Folger family in First Class. After almost seven years on Snowpiercer, she’s almost as conniving as her parents.

other characters will be learned. “We do dive into the past a little bit,” he says, “but there’s a method that I think is really smart by which Snowpiercer deals with flashbacks, and it has to do with this idea that one of the unifying factors between classes on the train is that everybody there has experienced trauma [following the end of the world]. There’s a kind of healing that needs to go on for that, and there are folks who are responsible for that healing. That process is how flashbacks are dealt with.” As a major character itself, more of the Snowpiercer is also slowly uncovered as Andre discovers other parts of the train during his investigation. And it’s not just the detective who is impressed as he explores this wider world — Diggs, too, was amazed at what the series’ set designers kept coming up with. “Oh, man,” recalls the actor. “The train keeps revealing itself. It’s pretty incredible, really, as an actor, because the production design is kind of fantastic. So, you would walk into these spaces just like, ‘How did you do this?’ … It felt like every week I would show up and see new cars. I mean, to the point where they kept having to add more stages.” While Season 1 of Snowpiercer was completed before the pandemic shut down many TV productions, filming on the second season was suspended. But Diggs says, “We were almost done, so I’m not super worried about [finishing Season 2].” In the meantime, he assures viewers that Season 1 offers “great action sequences, and espionage and mystery. I do think it will be enjoyable for folks. Also, we may be inside for quite a while. You’re going to want to watch everything at this point.”

Snowpiercer,” Diggs adds, “is it’s actually really fun. … There’s a ton of really propulsive storytelling.” The storytelling in the series is indeed as propulsive as the supertrain of its title. Based on a 1982 graphic novel and series producer Bong Joon Ho’s cult 2013 film adaptation (see sidebar on next page), Snowpiercer is set seven years after Earth has become a frozen wasteland. The gigantic Snowpiercer train has been created to house the remnants of humanity — or at least those privileged enough to be allowed aboard — and now perpetually circles the globe. Those on the train also include the less privileged who managed to fight their way onboard before it departed, and who now spend their lives locked in the train’s Tail, far away from those enjoying life in First Class. When we meet Diggs’ character, Andre Layton, he is among those in the Tail. In his former life, Andre was a homicide detective. Now, as apparently the last surviving person with such skills, he is brought uptrain by the leaders of the Snowpiercer to help investigate a murder. While Andre is “a staunch supporter of the Tail,” according to Diggs, and does not want to leave the others behind, he is not given much choice by those at the front of the Snowpiercer. Among those powers-that-be is Melanie Cavill (Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly), the train’s Head of Hospitality whose deceptively soothing voice is regularly heard over the train’s PA system. As with Andre, we get glimpses of who Cavill is, and the secrets she may be hiding, in the first episode. Diggs explains that as the series progresses, more about them and

Your TiVo Experience Road Map
ONEPASS: YOUR TICKET TO LIMITLESS ENTERTAINMENT OnePass™ gathers every episode of a series – wherever it’s available – and adds them right to your My Shows. If an episode isn’t available on TV or from Midco ON Demand, OnePass fills in the gaps with episodes from your connected streaming apps, like Netflix, Hulu and more. Forget about knowing when a show will be airing or wondering which streaming video service has it available. Your TiVo DVR does it for you, so you can start watching instantly. Best of all, streaming videos don’t take up any space on your DVR – so you get more choices without having to worry about recording space. To create a OnePass, find a series you want to watch, and then choose Create a OnePass. Your TiVo DVR will create a folder for that series in My Shows, with all available episodes in it. For more tips, go to Midco.com/TiVoSupport
Note: App availability is subject to change, and a third-party monthly subscription is required for some apps. TiVo services may not be available in all areas and some restrictions may apply. TiVo DVR requires a Midco Internet 50 connection or higher. Not all TiVo DVRs are compatible with the newer TiVo Experience.
