The 53rd Country Music Association Awards will celebrate the top artists on the country music charts. But this year, the show is also doing something a little different — the theme for the night will celebrate legendary women in country music. For the first time since 2008, Carrie Underwood is hosting without Brad Paisley. Instead, she will be accompanied by special guest hosts Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton. McEntire and Parton, of course, have been instrumental in assisting other female country artists in the business and providing mentorship to a younger generation. “It’s an incredible honor to welcome Carrie, Reba and Dolly to the CMA Awards stage this year,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA chief executive officer. “In addition to awarding the year’s best and brightest in the genre, the 53rd annual CMA Awards [Nov. 13 on ABC] will celebrate the legacy of women within country music, and

we couldn’t think of a more dynamic group of women to host the show.” It’s only fitting that a woman leads all nominees this year — Maren Morris earned six nominations, including Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. Close behind Morris are Brothers Osbourne with four nominations and country darlings Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Kacey Musgraves, Shelton, Chris Stapleton and Underwood all with three each. All three hosts, and many of the nominees will also perform. In other awards show news, the American Music Awards (Nov. 24 on ABC) will also air this month, live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, recognizing the most popular artists and albums of 2019. The AMAs is the largest fan-voted awards show in the world and is sure to draw in some of your favorite artists (at presstime, nominations and performances were not yet announced).

Best Of SHOWTIME

The heir to an aristocratic family attempts to overcome his addictions and a complicated past. Benedict Cumberbatch was electric as the adult version of the titular Englishman as the series follows him throughout his life.

25 Brotherhood (2006-08) 3 Seasons

Richly plotted and totally absorbing, Brotherhood was one of 2006’s best TV surprises of the summer. Irish-American brothers Tommy (Jason Clarke) and Michael (Jason Isaacs) couldn’t be more different, with one in politics and one a gangster in the Irish mob. The characters were modeled after the real-life Whitey Bulger and his brother, Billy.

24 Californication (2007-14) 7 Seasons Never has a series opener grabbed our attention in such a jaw-dropping way (the church … the nun), but David Duchovny is as rakishly appealing as any cad can be in this wicked celebration of debauchery. 4

22 Masters of Sex (2013-16) 4 Seasons This fascinating look at sex in the late 1950s was hailed as fresh and exciting by critics, with its two lead actors — Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan — proving more than worthy of taking on such challenging subject material.

21 United States of Tara (2009-11) 3 Seasons Steven Spielberg and Juno’s Oscarwinning screenwriter Diablo Cody brought us this endearing dramedy about a housewife with multiple personalities. Our favorite? Party teen T? Roughneck Buck? The fragile Alice? The shrink Shoshana? Honestly, we fancied them all.

19 Kidding (2018-present) 1 Season

Jim Carrey as a children’s TV host? We couldn’t think of a better premise for this half-hour show, which follows the compellingly watchable Carrey as he navigates personal tragedy despite his job as a cheerful television personality. Season 2 premieres in February.

18 The Borgias (2011-13) 3 Seasons

This bloody look into the 15thcentury Catholic Church and Pope Alexander VI examined the politics of court and of religion, but more than anything it showed the machinations of a complicated family complete with jealousy, treachery and even incest.

23 Patrick Melrose (2018) Limited Series, 5 Episodes

A show for the English majors among us, Penny Dreadful honored horror by bringing to life classic literature characters like Victor Frankenstein and his monster, Dracula and the Harkers, and Dorian Gray. Eva Green was a force to be reckoned with as Vanessa Ives, and Josh Hartnett quietly excelled in what we consider to be the strongest role of his career as Ethan Chandler.

The premium network first was introduced in 1976 and has since produced some of television’s most noteworthy and headline-grabbing shows. Here, we’ve compiled a list of our favorites.

15 Escape at

Dannemora

(2018) Limited Series, 7 Episodes

This true story of a 2015 prison escape was masterfully directed by Ben Stiller and featured a powerful cast — Benicio Del Toro, Paul Dano and, unrecognizable in her awardwinning role as a prison employee, Patricia Arquette.

17 House of Lies (2012-16) 5 Seasons TV Guide Magazine’s critic Matt Roush described this one best: “Deeply cynical, garish in its raunchiness and always rudely, lewdly hilarious, Lies swims in a shark tank of such appalling survivalof-the-nastiest bad behavior it could launch its own channel: Human Animal Planet.” An electrifying Don Cheadle played the recklessly venal Marty Kaan, who led a cocky team of management consultants (Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz), all who were absolutely hilarious.

16 Twin Peaks (2017) 1 Season Who killed Laura Palmer? We went along for the ride with coffee-loving, pie-eating FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he attempted to figure out just what was going on in Twin Peaks, Wash. Surreal and often a bit odd, the show amassed a huge cult following and carved out its own spot in pop culture — enough that Showtime rebooted it 16 years after Season 2 concluded on ABC.

Matt LeBlanc capitalized on his success as Joey on Friends, playing a hysterical version of himself on a British TV series opposite Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig as a married couple in charge of LeBlanc’s show. LeBlanc won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy for his performance.

13 Web Therapy (2011-15) 4 Seasons

12 The L Word (2004-09) 6 Seasons Capitalizing on the success of Queer as Folk, this series followed a group of lesbian besties navigating their lives in L.A. The show was considered groundbreaking at a time when female same-sex relationships were rarely shown on television. A sequel series is premiering on Showtime in December.

11 The Tudors (2007-10) 4 Seasons

Quite the pageant of pomp and friskiness, this throwback to the oldfashioned miniseries of yore was spiced with pay-cable frankness. Jonathan Rhys Meyers made for one handsome King Henry VIII, but he showed us how ruthless his reign truly was. Natalie Dormer as his second wife Anne Boleyn remains our favorite.

Lisa Kudrow’s Fiona Wallice, an online therapist offering threeminute consultations, was almost as funny as her 10-season run as Phoebe on Friends. The supporting cast included Victor Garber, Dan Bucatinsky, Alan Cumming and Lily Tomlin, supplemented by truly great guest stars like Meryl Streep, Steve Carell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and more (yes, fellow Friends castmates stopped by, too). 5

9 It’s Garry Shandling’s Show

(1986-90) 4 Seasons

The 30-minute series followed Garry Shandling as, yes, Garry Shandling, a standup comedian who knew he was putting on a show, and everyone was in on the joke. He broke the fourth wall with impunity and interacted with the studio audience as much as he did with the cast members themselves. 6

This bold storytelling was refreshingly unique as illicit lovers (Ruth Wilson and Dominic West) served as unreliable narrators of their tempestuous love story. Each episode was split — reliving events from their separate perspectives, which rarely jibed. The only truth we were sure of was the pain they caused their spouses.

7 Billions

(2016-present) 5 Seasons

Oh, if only we had the money and power of Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, a self-made hedge-fund billionaire (played by Homeland’s Damian Lewis). This slick and juicy highfinance melodrama pits Axe against a ruthless U.S. attorney (Paul Giamatti) in a bitter campaign of alpha-takes-all combat.

5 Shameless

(2011-present) 10 Seasons

Now the longest-running original scripted series in Showtime history (Season 10 premieres this month), this adaptation of the British hit has consistently managed to walk a fine line as it pulls no punches (and has no shame) in mining laughs from the tribulations of an impoverished family with an almost-alwaysdrunk patriarch (Emmy nominee William H. Macy).

10 The Affair (2014-19) 5 Seasons

Entering its seventh season this month, this sometimes darkly humorous crime drama with Emmy-nominated Liev Schreiber as the title “fixer,” and Jon Voight as his shady father in a bit of inspired casting, has lost none of its edge since moving its compellingly down-and-dirty action from Los Angeles to New York City a few seasons back.

Queer as Folk: Credit: L. Pief Weyman/Showtime.

The first hourlong drama on American television to follow gay men and women, Queer as Folk was based off of a British series of the same name and made waves on this side of the pond as well for its frank depiction of sex, relationships and the lives of modern adults.

8 Queer as Folk (2000-05) 5 Seasons

2 Nurse Jackie (2009-15) 7 Seasons

How do you follow up a show like The Sopranos? For Edie Falco, success was all in the writing, and she found it in the comic and tragic tales of this drug-addicted nurse. In its mix of the caustic and the compassionate, Nurse Jackie soared, and Falco was as electrifying as its star.

After her husband dies, Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) decides to support her family by selling marijuana. As the show progresses, the family involves themselves in more illegal activity. Created by Jenji Kohan (Orange Is the New Black), Weeds was a twist on a crime series and brought us a new antihero to cheer on.

A macabre gem with gaspinducing twists, this was one of TV’s most gripping dark entertainments courtesy of its compelling star, Michael C. Hall. Other performance highlights included the Trinity Killer (the great John Lithgow) and Julia Stiles as Lumen. Dexter is credited for helping grow Showtime’s subscribers, and it’s a great example of the rulebreaking shows the network is known for.

3 Homeland

(2011-20) 8 Seasons

The long-running spy thriller about CIA agents (its eighth and final season debuts in February) has evolved over the years in terms of its storylines, just as the world events upon which it is based have. But what has remained consistent is its powerful leads in Claire Danes, a two-time Emmy winner for her role as Carrie Mathison, and Mandy Patinkin, a four-time Emmy nominee for his role as Saul Berenson. And how many other shows have had a U.S. president, in this case Barack Obama, praise them? 7

Dublin Murders Two detectives (Killian Scott and Sarah Greene) investigate the murder of a young girl in a small Irish town, as well as the disappearance decades earlier of three children in the woods. Premieres on Starz Nov. 10

This hilarious British comedy/drama with traces of a dark side comes from the producers of the Amazon hit Fleabag and shares some of that series’ sensibilities. Daisy Haggard (Episodes) created, cowrote (with Laura Solon) and stars in this series as Miri. After 18 years in prison following an incident when she was a teenager, Miri returns home and tries to start an adult life in the coastal town she once knew, while the mystery of her past looms large. Premieres on Showtime Nov. 10

The Preppy Murder: Death in Central Park

This five-part, three-night docuseries reexamines the infamous 1986 killing of Jennifer Levin at the hands of Robert Chambers and the ensuing trial that captivated New York City and the nation. Archival footage, interviews with people close to the events and reenactments help reveal what made the story unfold in the way that it did and the themes surrounding the case — including sexism, elitism and the role of tabloid media — that still impact our society today. Premieres on AMC Nov. 13-15

The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!

As a tribute to the classic animated film The Little Mermaid for its 30th anniversary, this live musical event — described as using a “never-before-seen hybrid format” with intricate sets and costumes — will interweave live musical performances of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s enduring songs into a broadcast of the original movie. The live portion cast includes Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) as Ariel, rapper Shaggy voicing Sebastian the crab and Queen Latifah as sea witch Ursula. Premieres on ABC Nov. 5

6.

Premieres on History Nov. 12

7.

His Dark Materials Adapted from Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, this imaginative series is massive in scope, beautiful in story, rich with talent and filled with glorious eccentricities. Also stars Lin-Manual Miranda (pictured), Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy and Clarke Peters. Premieres on HBO Nov. 4
