Sandra Bullock And Melissa McCarthy Are On Fire In “The Heat” The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and melissa mcCarthy as the newest pair of mismatched police partners in a long history of such film matchups, was written by katie dippold. dippold, whose previous writing credits are for the television shows Parks and Recreation and MADtv, was caught off guard by the news that her script would be brought to life by director/filmmaker Paul Feig (Bridesmaids). “i thought i was being pranked,” dippold admits. “i got an email saying that Paul wanted to have lunch with me. After reading the email, i sat there frozen for several minutes. Then, i thought it was a joke.” luckily for the audience, the real jokes are contained in what’s onscreen. The pairing of Bullock (playing “Ashburn”) and mcCarthy (as “mullins”) worked right from the start. “Sandy and melissa took what was on the page and made it funnier than i thought it could ever be,” dippold adds. The Heat isn’t all about the laughs, though; there’s real heart to the film and to the characters played by Bullock and mcCarthy. “We joke about this, but The Heat is kind of a love story,” says mcCarthy. “mullins and Ashburn struggle with each other, get past it, and then actually begin to enjoy working together. That brings some heart to the comedy.”
