The film Million Dollar Arm is based on a true story. In 2007, sports agent JB Bernstein staged a reality show in India, hoping to find promising baseball talent among the cricket-loving population. Bernstein says, “The hope was to find the next Yao Ming, except for baseball … to capture cricket fans and turn them towards baseball.” Ultimately, Bernstein found his ballplayers in Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, and brought them home … literally. The boys became his de facto sons, living in his house as he taught them the intricacies of baseball, as well as the even more mystifying vagaries of American life. Jon Hamm was the first choice to play JB Bernstein, according to producer Mark Ciardi. “We’ve wanted to work with him for years. I think Jon really got JB — his combination of frustration, emotion, comedy and sympathy.” Hamm says, “I am a big sports fan and I was intrigued by this story, which had gone under my radar. I read the script, looked up the real story online, and the more I found out, the more fascinated I was. It’s more a story about people and how they relate to each other. As the story unfolds, we realize that JB is learning as much about himself as the boys are about their new life.” Hamm adds, “It’s a compelling, oldfashioned story about hard work and coming up with the big idea and seeing it through.” Casting the real-life Rinku and Dinesh was one of the most challenging aspects of pre-production. The roles went to Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal. “Suraj was one of the first people to come to mind. We ended up putting several actors with Suraj to figure out a good dynamic. Madhur came in and their energy together was incredible,” says director Craig Gillespie.
