■ Where To Watch: The Waltons airs on MeTV weekdays at 11am CT (metv.com), and on INSP weekdays at 3pm CT (insp.com).

The Waltons ■ Sept. 14, 1972-June 4, 1981, on CBS. Earl Hamner Jr.’s 1971 TV movie The Homecoming: A Christmas Story was so successful that its characters returned the following year in this classic historical family drama set in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II. The series ran for nine seasons on CBS before viewers said goodnight to John-Boy (and the rest of the sizable Waltons clan) for the last time, but it was followed by three NBC movies in 1982 and three CBS movies in the ’90s.

The Bob Newhart Show ■ Sept. 16, 1972-April 1, 1978, on CBS. When Bob Newhart’s sitcom joined CBS’ formidable early ’70s Saturday night lineup, having the comedian play Chicago psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley was an inspired way to spotlight his talent for deadpan reactions. Demonstrating how beloved this show became, the famous series finale of Newhart’s next sitcom, Newhart (1982-90), ended with an all-time twist that showed that the entire Vermont-set series had only been a dream — a dream had by Bob Hartley, who awakened alongside wife Emily (Suzanne Pleshette) in their familiar Chicago bedroom from the earlier series. The reveal elicited surprised and delighted cheers from the studio audience, and likely from many TV viewers.

M*A*S*H ■ Sept. 17, 1972-Feb. 28, 1983, on CBS. Set at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital near the front lines of the Korean War, and premiering while the Vietnam War was ongoing, this iconic series became one of the most beloved dramedies ever, with characters who became like family to viewers, and storylines that managed to find humanity and humor even amid war. After 11 years, M*A*S*H said “goodbye, farewell and amen” with a movielength finale that was seen by over 100 million tearful viewers and remains the most-watched episode of a U.S. scripted series ever.

Jon Bernthal, Gretchen Mol, Rosie O’Donnell What’s It All About? It’s got to be unnerving to step into Richard Gere’s iconic 1980 role, but Jon Bernthal makes it look easy in this present-day reimagining of the neo-noir film. Bernthal, who’s been delivering a nonstop tour de force of memorable characters — Shane in The Walking Dead, Frank Castle in The Punisher, Lee Iacocca in Ford v Ferrari, Sgt. Jenkins in We Own This City — is a guy you just notice. Uncovering his chiseled chest and cocking a sexy grin, Bernthal is a natural in the lead role of Julian Kaye, a tender man who, after being wrongfully convicted, is released after 15 years in prison and is left to navigate his complicated relationships with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his dysfunctional mother and the people who betrayed him. The eight-episode series also stars Rosie O’Donnell as the no-BS detective who put him away originally but now seeks the truth in what turns out to be a much larger conspiracy. Flashbacks of Julian’s life are interspersed throughout the series and bring back memories of the original film, particularly when it comes to the stylish setting and Julian’s wardrobe. “Taking inspiration from the original Armani designs for Julian Kaye and trying to stay true to the heart of that character, while also reimagining him 15 years later, was the goal we set out to accomplish,” tells costume designer Stephani Lewis. “While we didn’t choose to incorporate a lot of new costumes into present-day Julian’s closet, we did make the decision to pay homage to the high-fashion concepts of the original film in flashbacks where we exposed his past life with more exuberance and flair. The tricky and fun part of the whole process was portraying two different characters who exist within the same person and making both feel authentic and natural to the world they inhabit.”

Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins, Anna Friel What’s It All About? Susan Sarandon brings her sass and sexiness (which she often smartly undercuts with blunt, world-weary wisdom) to the role of rags-toriches superstar Dottie Roman in this sudsy drama, which got delayed from its original January 2022 premiere. Dottie is the Queen of Country Music, and the matriarch of an Austin music dynasty (real-life chart-topper Trace Adkins plays her husband Albie) who knows her time in the spotlight is ending. She anoints one child (Anna Friel, Pushing Daisies) as her successor, and “Heavy is the head that wears the crown, baby.” Having been in the industry for 25 years, Adkins has had a front-row seat to country music. His character is described as the “Texas truth-teller,” but even that appears to be a lie. “He has as many secrets as anybody does, but that’s just been the moniker that he’s portrayed himself as, this old-school OG truth-teller in his music,” Adkins told us. “And so, that’s just been kind of the handle that he’s gone by, but don’t take it literally.” When everyone has their own secrets and their own agendas, expect the dark side of country music to come out in this juicy drama.

Premieres: Sept. 29 ■ Airs: Thursdays at 8pm Who’s In It? Marcia Gay Harden, Skylar Astin What’s It All About? Leading a broadcast series for the first time since CBS’ Code Black ended in 2018, Marcia Gay Harden can soften the heart of even the most impenetrable character. As an Oregon law partner in this dramedy, she knows what’s best for everyone — especially her son (played by Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’s Skylar Astin), who’s been floundering since losing his PI license. After he helps her solve a very personal case, she recognizes his talent and hires him at her firm. We just hope her schedule allows for more family stakeouts. Mandi Bierly CBS

Rounding out the team are Mason Alexander Park as Ian Wright, who runs the Ziggy artificial intelligence unit, and Nanrisa Lee as Jenn Chou, who heads up digital security for the confidential project.

Additionally, while able to be enjoyed as a standalone new series, this Quantum Leap can also be seen as a sixth-season continuation of the original; it inhabits the same universe, taking place 30 years after Beckett entered his Quantum Leap accelerator and never came back, seemingly stuck hopping in and out of various people’s lives across time. Now, a new team is restarting the project to hopefully understand the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it. This team is led by physicist Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee), who, after making an unauthorized leap into the past, finds himself stuck in Beckett’s predicament: jumping into other people’s lives across various decades, righting past wrongs while he and his teammates look for a way to bring him back to his own life. Ben is helped by Addison (Caitlin Bassett), a decorated Army veteran who brings levelheaded precision to her job, and who appears in the form of a hologram that only he can see and hear.

Fans of NBC’s 1989-93 sci-fi series Quantum Leap may have been tempted to mutter, “Oh, boy” — the frequent catchphrase of main character Dr. Sam Beckett — when it was announced that the beloved time-travel show would be rebooted. But this revival has some good things going for it that make it worth checking out. For one thing, original creator/ writer/executive producer Donald P. Bellisario, and original writer/EP Deborah Pratt (who also provided the original’s narration and voiced the self-aware supercomputer Ziggy), are both back as producers.

Ernie Hudson’s character, no-nonsense career military man Herbert “Magic” Williams, heads the new Quantum Leap program. Fans of the previous series may recall this character (played by another actor) as the Vietnam War veteran Beckett leaped into in Season 3’s second episode, “The Leap Home: Part 2 (Vietnam),” in 1990.

With Beckett still a part of this new series’ mythology, and perhaps still out there leaping through time, fans have been wondering if former star Scott Bakula may appear at some point to reprise that role, especially given the mixed feelings that came when the original series’ 1993 finale ended with the note that Sam Beckett never returned home. Nothing on that has yet been confirmed; if it does happen, we imagine it won’t be right away, so as to give viewers a chance to fully get to know the new characters.

■ What To Expect: Nolan (Nathan Fillion) will be starting at rock bottom again, becoming the rookie once more as he rises in the ranks serving as a training officer to a female rookie who makes familiar mistakes. “[It’s] kind of brilliant,” Fillion said, “the way we take a look at life and say, ‘What keeps you a rookie? What in your life are you still a rookie at?’” There’s also Nyla’s pregnancy and that cliffhanger kiss between Lucy and Tim! “There will definitely be some repercussions and fallout from that,” said series creator Alexi Hawley.

Rookie

Where We Left Off: The Season 4 finale gave some fans a taste of what they’ve been craving for years as Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) took their partnership to another level.

Niecy Nash-Betts returns to her character of Simone Clark, the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy, who was introduced in an action-packed Rookie two-parter last spring. Clark, a whip-smart former guidance counselor, successfully schooled a new unit of special agents on thinking outside the box. Here NashBetts shares more. This role just seems like it was penned directly for you. How comfortable are you in Simone’s shoes? Man, I love Simone Clark’s shoes. I love that she is fun. I love that she’s funny. I love that she dances to the beat of her own drum, but at the same time she is intentional and driven. I love her so much. … With less than 1% of African American women working for the FBI, I had not seen the story through this lens. I love that we find her in her second act, that her dream, though deferred or delayed, still manifested. So she’s making a life choice, a different career choice at 48. That’s the time when most people are counting the days to their retirement. She’s like, “No, let me begin again.” Where do we pick up with Simone? We pick up with her graduating from Quantico and waiting for her assignment, where she’s going to ultimately be put. She graduates and heads to Los Angeles to start her new life.

When a mystery author dies under suspicious circumstances, with his last book seemingly unfinished, it leaves two pressing questions: What happened to him? And how does his latest potboiler end? Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) stars as the author’s editor, Susan Ryeland, who is the detective in the case. In an intertwining world, Tim McMullan (Patrick Melrose) plays the fictional sleuth, Atticus Pünd, from the novel, who Susan “sees” and knows can help her solve the crime.

■ What’s It All About? Based on the iconic characters from the classic 18th century novel, this reimagining set in pre-Revolution France tells the origin story of how the Marquise de Merteuil, a self-made woman, and the Vicomte de Valmont met as passionate young lovers in Paris. Driven to right the wrongs of their past, the couple rises from the slums of Paris and scales the heights of the French aristocracy, seducing and manipulating both the nobility and each other to survive.

THE CW Premieres: Oct. 6 Airs: Thursdays at 8pm ■ Who’s In It? Katherine McNamara, Matt Barr, Greg Hovanessian, Justin Johnson Cortez

Abby’s choice to stay sees her cross paths with two men who support her quest for justice, outlaw Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr) and Apache tracker Calian (Justin Johnson Cortez). Hoyt is a flippant con artist, gambler, thief and bank robber. He and Abby’s antagonistic relationship has a throwback vibe and generates plenty of laughs. McNamara raves about Barr and shares that the two were immediately on the same page about the tone of their dynamic, noting the characters are more similar than they first appear. “They’re both misfits with hearts of gold that have been through good times and bad,” she says. “They’re just trying to get by in the world and do right by the people they love.”

In addition to complicated relationships, McNamara says viewers can expect a Western that deviates from the norm: “I keep saying this is not your mama’s Western.” There are elements that will feel familiar to the genre, like sweeping landscapes and beautiful costumes, but the story repeatedly deviates from the expected.  Paul Doro

Who’s In It? Tom Welling, Brendan Fraser, Elena Anaya What’s It All About? Smallville’s Tom Welling returns to The CW in this international action dramedy. The former Superman is Vincent Corbo, a security operative who is paid by the rich and powerful to protect their interests by any means necessary — legal or not. He is hired by billionaire futurist Peter Swann (Brendan Fraser) to investigate the explosion of a satellite intended to track the outbreak of infectious diseases and improve global health. The duo is joined by Dr. Grace Davila (Elena Anaya), Peter’s fiancée, Vincent’s ex-girlfriend and a key player in the design of the satellite. As the three of them work to discover who shot the rocket down, who paid the shooter and who helped them from inside Peter’s organization, they find themselves dealing with shady local law enforcement and personality clashes. Fraser provides the comic relief, spouting one-liners as he tries to follow Vincent’s lead and stay out of harm’s way. Watching the trio find a way to successfully work together to stave off a global catastrophe is highly entertaining.

■ What’s It All About? Walker, itself a reboot of the ’90s Chuck Norris series Walker, Texas Ranger, gets an origin story with this Western set in the 1870s. This saga is the story of Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara), who leaves Boston with her husband to begin a new life in Independence, Texas. Their plans are disrupted when a mysterious man named Tom Davidson (Greg Hovanessian) guns Abby’s husband down, leaving her alone, penniless and far from home, but determined to find justice.

McNamara, who played Mia Smoak on several of The CW’s DC superhero series, including Arrow and The Flash, is thrilled by the opportunity to tackle a rarity on television: a Western with a female lead. She finds her character’s agency to be much of the appeal. “[Abby] chooses to take charge and avenge her husband’s death, but not only that, to start a new life, and to choose to stay in Independence,” McNamara says.

Alaska Daily ABC

■ Premieres:

Series creator Tom McCarthy is well-versed in the nuances of newsrooms and reporting. He cowrote and directed Spotlight, which won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Alaska Daily marks the first time he wrote and directed for a broadcast network series, on which he is also serving as an executive producer. The series centers the action around reporter Eileen Fitzgerald, played by Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. After a scandal involving a source lands her in hot water, Eileen relocates from New York City to Anchorage, Alaska, and takes a job at a metro daily newspaper there. She is an outsider with a lot to learn about her coworkers, new home and the people who live there. However, Eileen soon discovers that just because Anchorage isn’t New York City, that doesn’t mean there aren’t important, stimulating stories to cover.  McCarthy acknowledges that Spotlight served as an inspiration for Alaska Daily. In the film, there was no time to explore the reporters’ personal lives, but spending time with them led him to believe they are unique and fascinating people. Not to mention, what they do is crucial to a healthy democracy. “I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the people they are and the work they do,” McCarthy says.

For McCarthy, the atypical Alaska setting was a perfect fit for the show. The decision was inspired by a series of investigative pieces he read in the Anchorage Daily News covering systemic failures in Alaska Native communities that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2020. The stories were “incredibly compelling,” and served as fuel that inspired the setting. “[It] feels like an exciting backdrop for a local newspaper and for the show, especially as a place where a reporter from New York City ends up,” McCarthy explains.

■ What’s It All About? Oh, it’s so, so good to be bad. This edgy historical drama gets a contemporary spin telling the story of Catherine de Medici. Her rise to power from an Italian noblewoman to queen of France — one of the country’s longest-serving monarchs — is a devilishly rich journey. Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead’s Alpha) takes on the title role and gives new meaning to the word ruthless — “If you don’t teach your enemies a lesson, they will never learn.” Catherine was orphaned shortly after birth and married off at age 14 into the 16thcentury French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones’ Tywin Lannister) negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, but with it came the expectation of many heirs. On her wedding night, however, Catherine’s life is forever changed and her epic race for survival and conquest begins. Long live this queen!

Chicago Fire

■ Catching Up With: Kara Killmer, who plays Sylvie Brett Where do we pick up with Brett and the firehouse? Toward the end of last season, there was a lot on showcasing the difficulty of the long-distance relationship with Casey [Jesse Spencer]. Brett also has her paramedicine going on, the program she created, so I think this season you’re really going to see her throw herself into that program and try to make a difference in the city. ... We will have to see how things evolve with her long-distance relationship. And then you may actually see some familiar faces come back, you might see an old love pass through.

What about Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo)? We finished Season 10 with this gigantic cliffhanger where you see this bad guy waiting for them. Can’t these two just have a honeymoon, right? Come on. We’re going to see the fallout of that. Are they going to be OK? Obviously just the novelty of Severide in a marriage that wasn’t in Vegas is going to be very interesting for viewers. I feel like all of Taylor’s fans are going to be very scrupulous — they’re very possessive of him. It’s going to be some serious business seeing how this lady, how his wife shows up on the show. What are some personal touches you’ve added to the set/show? I have a picture of me and Jesse outside of the lots, which is the exterior of Molly’s. I asked for a picture so that I could put it on the inside of my locker. I try and find opportunities — there’s also a picture of me and my [real-life] little sister with Casey. It’s like a little Easter egg and something that makes me feel like it’s current.

We’ve seen a lot of Chicago over nearly 10 years, more than 544 episodes and counting, and creator/writer Dick Wolf has plenty more to share in his trio of hits — Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. — as each returns for new seasons this September on NBC. When I found out that Vanessa’s father was coming, I was like “sweet chalupa why?” I always knew there was a possibility of a bond that was so rich, so when they said that he was coming, I wasn’t surprised, but I have to say that I was concerned. ... You were once deeply in love and you made a decision that will always keep you bonded together. So let’s see where that goes. After that apartment fire in the season ender, will we be seeing Will (Nick Gehlfuss) or any of the others come through the ER? My answer to that is Will gets into these situations. He’s one of my best friends, he’s my brother. All I’ve got to say is that thing looked like it burned really bad. What are some personal touches you’ve added to the set/show? I have a lot of family members who are in the medical field. So a fun fact is I really love the stethoscopes that Maggie has. Maggie buys a new stethoscope, meaning Marlyne does every year — I buy two stethoscopes And I want my character to have an authentic, incredible stethoscope. At the end of each season, I do a big raffle for the stethoscope. So you will constantly see people over the course of the years who are wearing Season 1 stethoscopes, Season 2, Season 3, the people that won them. More importantly, these are the stethoscopes that my mother and sister wear as real medical professionals.

■ What To Expect: The big question for Season 2 is what is Thony going to be capable of doing to save her child? Is she going to use her contacts within the FBI or the criminal world, or just do it herself? Will her relationship with Arman (Adan Canto) extend beyond just cleaning his money? Executive producers Melissa Carter and Miranda Kwok tell us: “This season, fans can expect more of that complicated chemistry and sexual tension between Arman and Thony while they are pushed further into criminal activities together, but as they attempt to rebuild their lives, Arman’s wife Nadia [Eva De Dominici] becomes a crucial part of their business. Whereas Thony needed Arman’s help last season to save her son, now Arman needs Thony’s help to save his soul.”

■ Where We Left Off: Max (Ryan Eggold) saved the hospital from a cruel administrator and a hurricane, only for Helen (Freema Agyeman) to jilt him at the altar.

There is still tension between Voight [Jason Beghe] and Hailey. They haven’t really discussed what’s happened. Hailey is worried about Voight, and Voight is fixated on making Anna’s death mean something. So he’s really committed to that case almost exclusively, and for Hailey we see kind of the tension that rises up there and her concern for him and not really talking about or resolving anything that happened during the finale last year. How long can you and your onscreen hubby Jay (Jesse Lee Soffer) continue to protect Voight? We’re definitely going to see some more tension between Hailey and Jay regarding that. I think Hailey’s biggest concern is Jay getting caught up in something similar to the situation that she found herself in with Roy [Michael Maize] and Voight. She’s worried about Jay. They’re both concerned for Voight, but their approach to how to handle it is very different, and so we will see some more tension with that going into the season. What’s a storyline you’d love to see explored for your character in the future? I’m interested in finding out a little bit more about Hailey’s family life and her upbringing. We know a little bit about her dynamic with her father, but I want to know, does she have siblings? I always imagine she had two older brothers, and maybe because I have two older brothers, that’s why, but I just always thought that she has siblings, and I’d be interested to just explore a little bit more in her family life.

■ What’s It All About? Mckenna Grace is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars, with an Emmy nomination for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale already under her belt — all before being old enough to drive! In the 2018 film The Bad Seed, psychopath Emma Grossman (Grace) was responsible for the deaths of classmates, her babysitter and eventually her father (played by Rob Lowe). The sequel brings up a new dynamic for Emma as she deals with teenage angst as well as her new household situation, now living with her aunt and uncle along with a baby cousin. A major highlight of the new film is that it was written by Grace herself, along with her father — a surgeon by trade — during quarantine. The original Bad Seed movie had a pretty high body count — does the sequel compare? Grace laughs. “Oh gosh, wait, hold on. … Let me count on my hand. I don’t know if it’s up to the first film, but it’s definitely up there.”

in between.

The style that endeared George Lopez to viewers is on hand here, with George’s often-sarcastic and insulting quips toward his adult daughter, her partner, Quinten (Matt Shively), or his ex-wife/Mayan’s mother, Rosie (Selenis Leyva), belying the love he has deep down for his family. In this case, his character isn’t quite as successful a family man as he was in the earlier sitcom: This George Lopez has been estranged from Mayan until recently after cheating on Rosie, and is now homeless after squandering all of his money on gambling, women and booze. But he is trying his best to reconnect with his daughter, who has a career as a veterinarian (some of the show’s laughs also come from her interactions with coworkers and clients), and her family, which includes young son Chance (Brice Gonzalez), even if he largely hides his feelings under acerbic humor. George also isn’t honest at first about his situation, and ends up staying with Mayan’s family under the guise of remodeling her home. Along with the humor that arises from family dysfunction, the clash of generational mores between George and Mayan also fuels a good part of the laughs, with the use of the TikTok social media platform so popular with Gen Zers/late millennials like Mayan providing some especially funny moments as father and daughter slowly learn to relate to each other. SeptemberWHAT’S NEW COMEDIES

Returns: Sept. 16 at 10pm ■ Where We Left Off: Los Espookys employees delivered much-needed horror to the people of an unidentified Latin American country.

■ Where We Left Off: Sam (Rose McIver), Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) and the ghosts were ready to welcome their first guests to the Woodstone B&B when they fell through a hole in the floor. That’s not going to be good for business.

What To Expect: The fourth and final season finds Earn, Paper Boi, Darius (LaKeith Stanfield) and Van (Zazie Beetz) back in their hometown of ATL, having grown into new states of mind (and fame) since Season 1 debuted in 2016. “It’s nice when endings come naturally rather than them being forced and muscled,” Henry says of wrapping the series on their own terms. Glover, who has won two Emmys for Atlanta, says, “I think it ends perfectly.”

■ What To Expect: Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) is haunted by the ghost of a beauty pageant queen, and Uncle Tico (Fred Armisen) searches for a new purpose after his valet career is derailed.

Where We Left Off: In its first season, the critically praised mockumentarystyle sitcom set in an inner-city grade school earned seven Emmy nominations, including two for creator and star Quinta Brunson.

Ghosts CBS ■

The hole in the floor definitely won’t be the last thing to go wrong at Woodstone. “I think we’ve got a long road ahead,” Ambudkar told TV Insider. “But the unconditional love that Sam and Jay share — it’s the heart of our show, it’s the lifeblood — and as long as that engine is running, anything is possible.” Returns: Sept. 21 at 8pm

ABC’s iconic 1977-86 comedy The Love Boat becomes exciting and new (again) as a CBS dating competition. Grammy-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson gets her own talker where she’ll be welcoming celebrity guests and musical performances, along with covering topical stories, community heroes and viral sensations. “We all have a story to tell. ■ What’s It All About?

“What drew me to telling these stories is the commitment level,” Chin says. “These aren’t sports, these are lifestyles. ... We want to show people what’s really happening behind what you normally see on TV ... [and] understand what the real stakes are.”

The U.S. And The Holocaust PBS ■ Premieres: Sept. 18-20 at 7pm ■ What’s It All About? Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein directed this three-part documentary film that explores America’s response to the Holocaust, shedding light on what the U.S. government and the American people knew and did, or didn’t do, as the catastrophe unfolded in Europe. The stories the filmmakers spotlight, with contributions from historians and survivors, underscore a historical American connection to the Holocaust and also effectively link it to our modern society, where we are still confronted with issues of racism, antisemitism and questions of who should be welcomed here. “The Holocaust is still going on,” Burns says, “and it is like an amputated limb that is still felt, still aches, still itches, still pains us to this day.” — Jeff Pfeiffer

Oscarwinning filmmaking duo Jimmy Chin and E. Chai Vasarhelyi (Free Solo) are executive producers of this epic 10-part half-hour series that uses intimate interviews and self-shot archival footage to go inside the minds of some of the world’s top adventure athletes, who recount the most consequential moments of their lives.

Lion: The Rise And Fall Of The Marsh Pride PBS ■ Premieres: Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 8pm

Among the personalities detailed in the series are Sarah McNair-Landry, a second-generation polar explorer who came face-to-face with death while attempting to be the first to cross the Northwest Passage in the brutal, freezing winter; Angel Collinson, a big-mountain skier who survived a fall that sent her tumbling 1,000 feet down the side of an Alaskan mountain; and Chin himself, who is also a professional mountain athlete and recounts his own story of how a Class 4 avalanche transformed the way he approaches his work and life.

Despite harrowing moments such as these — some of the amazing footage is indeed heart-stopping just from a viewer’s standpoint — the spotlighted athletes have continued to strive to master their pursuits, displaying a spirit that is something Chin also wanted to capture in Edge of the Unknown “A big part of the series is also to really highlight the joy of what we do,” he says, “those kind of mystical experiences, those transcendent experiences, those experiences of joy [as] we go seek and explore the edge.”

This groundbreaking 90-minute film tells the epic story of the famed Marsh pride of lions as it battles for survival in Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve. This pride has been documented by the BBC for over 30 years, up to now, in a world where lions and humans are increasingly at odds. Lion charts the rise and fall of this group of big cats, using archival footage and testimony from those who have filmed and lived alongside them to present a powerful tale of shifting loyalties, takeovers, bloodycomplexfamilydynamicsandsheerresilience.

■ What’s It All About? Amazon has a lot riding on this epic fantasy series that brings us back to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The drama has been in development/production and buzzed-about online for nearly five years and is reportedly the most expensive TV series ever made — the first eight-episode season alone is estimated to have cost over $450 million to produce, and the company’s five-season production commitment to the series is thought to be worth at least $1 billion.

The series takes place thousands of years before either of those stories and is largely based off the appendices Tolkien included in LOTR that chronicled some of Middle-earth’s history. It covers major events of the fictional realm’s Second Age that led to all the later drama, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the last alliance between elves and men, and the rise of LOTR’s infamous “big bad,” the dark lord Sauron (who, based on glimpses in an early trailer for the series, will be seen in an earlier, but still creepy, form prior to his manifestation as an all-seeing Eye).

Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek) put together this cooking competition series based around his love of food and aimed at celebrating the most inspiring undiscovered culinary voices in America. Chefs share their stories and business dreams while competing for a life-altering prize. Levy shared: “Everybody has a friend, a family member or a coworker that is extraordinary at what they do, they just need a leg up so that their talents can be appreciated on a larger scale. Thanks to an almost obsessive love of food, I’ve been lucky enough to come across many of those people in the culinary world — friends working out of cafes or food trucks, revolutionizing the menus at local diners — those special humans who create communities around their cooking, hoping to take their skills to the next level. I created this show for them, the local culinary heroes of America who deserve a spotlight.”
