Heaven Meets Hell In NBC Laugher. By Lori Acken Credit the doofs who push their yellow-arrow luck at intersections (then flip you off when they almost kill you) for inspiring comedy mastermind Michael Schur to craft this inventive belly-laugher about boorish Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), who alters the course of heaven — a.k.a. The Good Place — when she lands there by accident. The Good Place is a batch of neighborhoods, each specifically designed to fulfill inhabitants’ fondest wishes. Newbies are also assigned an afterlife-long bestie perfectly suited to them. In Eleanor’s case, that’s Chidi, a conflict-averse ethics professor who thinks he’s getting a fellow do-gooder and ends up with a quack-medicine telemarketer who stuffs shrimp in her bra at parties and is forkin’ ticked when she realizes she’s literally unable to swear. “It’s my two favorite things on the planet to explore — funny jokes and what does it mean to be a good person,” Bell exclaims. “I’m obsessed with the ripple effect my life will have on people, places and things.” Costar Ted Danson says playing Michael — architect and overseer of Eleanor’s ’hood — is equally irresistible. “I literally giggle on my way to work,” he beams, “thinking about what I get to do that day.” The Good Place — NBC — Premieres Sept. 19; Airs Thursdays
