Iwo Jima vets at World War II museum

Airing just after the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, Apocalypse ’45 (Discovery Channel, Sept. 5) is a timely documentary that recounts the final months of the war in the Pacific with never-before-seen, raw color film footage and the voices of 24 men who lived through the events. It documents events from the flag raising at Iwo Jima in February 1945, to the harrowing kamikaze attacks and vicious ground combat at Okinawa in April of that year, to the first test of the atomic bomb in the remote deserts of New Mexico on July 16. In addition, viewers will witness the air war over Japan in the summer of 1945, and — perhaps most astonishingly — the still-burning ruins of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when a U.S Army medical camera crew photographed the devastation to both the cities and their inhabitants. For this film, the National Archives opened its

vaults and allowed access that was previously denied to over 700 reels of footage covering the harrowing expanse of the final months of the Pacific War. Very little of this material has ever been screened — and none of it has ever been digitally restored, frame by frame, to 4K — until now. In addition, another treasure was uncovered and restored — astonishing new footage captured by legendary director John Ford. In essence, a “lost film” by Ford, it depicts the ruins of the Pacific Fleet and the terrible aftermath of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Also driving the narrative of Apocalypse ’45 are recently completed interviews with two dozen men who lived through these nightmarish events. Most of these men were in their mid to late 90s when filmmakers spoke with them, with the oldest, B-29 pilot Thomas Vaucher, 101 years old at the time of his February 2020 interview. — Jeff Pfeiffer

Are Shows Back In Production? First, you need to know there is no traditional fall TV season schedule this year. Yes, many shows have returned with new protocols in place. How many returning scripted favorites will be back in business by the traditional premiere weeks of late September and early October remains to be seen (that’s why you see several premiere dates missing in this issue). TV Guide Magazine’s senior critic Matt Roush says we should expect to see a signiﬁcant delay in getting new episodes ready for air on many primetime shows, as they ﬁgure out how to proceed with rigorous safety protocols, among other complicating factors.

How Does The Coronavirus Impact Storylines? The biggest thing viewers will probably notice is on the romance front, especially kissing and sex scenes. Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff said in a podcast that it’s “safe to say” that TV will be featuring a lot less kissing this season, but was conﬁdent they could work around being both socially distanced and sexy. “Obviously, you can’t have people making out, but there’s been a lot of sex on Grey’s Anatomy that doesn’t involve kissing,” she said. “There’s a lot of sexy lifting of clothes, and pulling down of clothes, and taking off of things, and standing behind a person in a sexy way. There’s a lot of ways to skin a cat, so to speak.”

When Is Chip And Joanna Gaines’ Network Going To Launch? Though the Magnolia Network was originally supposed to launch this fall, the debut has now been delayed to 2021. The network, coming from power couple Chip and Joanna Gaines, is taking over what is currently the DIY Network. Viewers can expect a vibrant roster of home and lifestyle shows, but what’s probably the most recognizable will be the return of Fixer Upper, the show that introduced audiences to the Gaineses in the ﬁrst place. Fixer Upper ran for ﬁve seasons before ending in April 2018, but it will now be resurrected and launch alongside the network debut in 2021. 4

The Medical Drama Makes Its Way From Canada To The U.S. By Taylor Neumann

It’s possible you might have heard of NBC’s new drama Transplant before — it is a hit in its native Canada and is now making its way to the United States. The series follows Dr. Bashir “Bash” Hamed (Hamza Haq), a refugee from Syria looking to rebuild his life and continue practicing medicine. “On a large scale, it’s about second chances in a lot of ways,” said star Haq about the show. “He’s trying to do his best in a new environment.” As the series progresses, Hamed joins the staff at York Memorial and finds himself in conflict between the way he does things — having learned in wartime — and the way the hospital does things. “A lot of improvisation is required when you have very limited resources when you’re on the battlefield,” said Haq. “And as a result of that, he’s learned to trust his instinct and use anything at his disposal, which at times wasn’t a lot.” Hamed makes the move from Syria to Canada with his little sister, Amira (Sirena Gulamgaus), and while the two have each other to lean on in this new country,

there’s also some apprehension as Hamed and Amira were separated in Syria and raised separately to spare her some of the realities of war. “He’s starting this new experience with somebody that he doesn’t necessarily know very well, at the same time as her trying to ﬁnd her footing in an environment where she doesn’t speak the language, [and] she doesn’t know anybody. … It’s quite interesting and there’s lots of room for heartwarming moments, as well as a lot of tension.” Making the jump to American television is also a daunting, but exciting, prospect for the show, which has already been renewed for a second season in Canada. “Going a little bit south of the border, I’m very excited because I think it’s very international — it’s a global story, it’s a human story. And people are deﬁnitely going to be able to relate to that, regardless of what part of the world that they came from. I mean, there’s a huge number of people who weren’t born in the States and that came to chase the ‘American dream’ for this, that or the other reason.
