Today, families can travel far and wide on camping adventures, because any heavy equipment can be carried in a car. If you’d rather be closer to home, you can simply set up camp in your back garden!

If you’re new to camping, there are a few simple essentials that you will need. First, a tent. A tent can be small, just for one person, or large enough for ten or more people. This is great if you have a big family. Each camper needs a sleeping bag and, for extra comfort, a cushioned mat to put underneath.

The Holi festival, or the ‘Festival of Colours’, takes place every year around March. It is a religious festival for people of the Hindu faith. Holi celebrates good winning over evil. It also marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, one of the three Indian harvest seasons. It’s a holiday for repairing relationships, or starting new ones. For many people, Holi is a time for fun. At this outdoor festival, people throw brightly coloured powder and water on one another. Streets turn into rainbows of colour, and so does everyone taking part. Different colours symbolize different things. For example, red can symbolize love and green can stand for a fresh start.

Mexicans celebrate Día de los Muertos each year in November to honour their loved ones who have died. The name means ‘Day of the Dead’. It’s a happy time, meant for remembering good things about people who are gone. During the festival, families tidy up graves and create altars with candles, flowers, decorated sugar skulls and the loved one’s favourite foods. People might also dress up in special clothes and paint their faces. 129

It’s not always easy for animal parents to feed their babies. A sea otter mum has to eat an enormous amount so that she can make milk for her pups. This means she often has to leave her pups alone in the water to go fishing. But, there’s an issue – newborn pups can’t swim!

No problem! Mum has a clever way of making sure her pups stay safe while she’s away. She fluffs up their fur to trap air inside so they float. Then, she wraps them up in sea kelp so they don’t drift off. Sea otters have the thickest fur of any mammal. When the babies are all fluffed up and secure, mum will leave them bobbing on the surface while she dives down for crabs, mussels or spiny sea urchins to feast on.
