Introduction Children learn language from their parents and families. Research shows that young children learn words most easily when parents and carers use single words and short phrases to narrate and describe what the child and the carers are doing throughout the day. Incorporating these short descriptions into the child’s daily routines and play activities is a simple way for parents to encourage language learning. In addition to providing pictures of common items in a child’s life, this book is intended to give models of the kinds of short comments that fit well into a child’s daily routines. Once children start to talk, repeating their words and adding a little bit to what they say encourages them to say more. Parents can help with language understanding by asking simple questions about the pictures such as ‘Where’s the duck ’ or ‘Who’s running ’ And then encourage the child to point to the appropriate picture. Using simple language with lots of expression while communicating with your child creates a lifelong bond. Claire Laties Davis Speech and language therapist
