Plants spring up in parks, woods, backyards— even in cracks in the pavements. Animals are everywhere, too, swimming in the ocean, singing from the trees, and purring in your lap.

Over millions of years, billions of tons of carbon from dead animals and plants gets buried deeper and deeper under the ground and under the sea. Eventually it turns into coal, oil, and natural gas. We call these substances fossil fuels because they were once the remains of living things. When we burn fossil fuels to heat our homes, run our cars, and make electricity, the carbon is released back into the air as carbon dioxide, making the Earth warmer and warmer. And that is a big problem.
