This count with pointy fangs lives in a castle in Romania. He has an intriguing look, with his pale complexion, black hair, and cloak. Count Dracula can change into a wolf or a bat and drinks human blood, which stops him from aging.

This powerful wizard from the Harry Potter books is bald, pale, and has red eyes and two slits in place of a nose. His special talent is speaking parseltongue, the language of snakes. Most call him “He-Who-Must-NotBe-Named.”

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
This unfortunate individual is so ugly that he wears a mask! In Paris, France, he haunts the Palais Garnier Opera House and terrorizes the performers there. The phantom falls in love with a singer he made famous, but she only pretends to love him.

This monstrous man lives in London in Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. At night, he commits atrocious crimes. In reality, he is the violent side of Dr. Jekyll, who has two personalities: one good and one evil.

This gigantic cosmic entity is found in stories by H. P. Lovecraft and looks like an octopus. Cthulhu is an evil god who sleeps at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. He is so dangerous that the other space gods have chased him away from his home star.

In the film Mars Attacks! these little green men with large bulging eyes travel to Earth from Mars. Everyone thinks they come in peace. Really they are here to destroy! Luckily for people on Earth, a certain type of music makes their heads explode.

This Japanese movie monster is a 328-foot(100-m-) tall mutant dinosaur. Thanks to its immense wings, it can fly at the speed of a jet plane. It attacks cities, spreading panic in its wake!

GARG OYLE
In a French fairy tale, a dragon kills the people of Rouen by unleashing torrents of water from its mouth. But St. Romanus saves the village by setting the dragon on fire. His head and neck are turned to stone and used to decorate buildings.

These three dreadful sisters are monsters from Greek mythology. They smell awful and have the bodies of birds and the heads of women. With their pointed claws, they snatch the souls of the dead and even the souls of living children!

JABBA THE HU TT
This gangster is from the Star Wars films and looks like a giant slug. His passions include telling lies, stuffing himself with food, and cheating people. Those who stand in his way are eaten by the rancor, a monster he keeps locked away underneath his palace.

European legends tell how werewolves sprout hair and turn into half-man, half-wolf creatures under the light of a full moon. Anyone unfortunate enough to be bitten by a werewolf will become one too. Only silver bullets are able to kill these monsters.

In stories from all across the world, this ruthless monster lurks under children’s beds and grabs them at night! Remember to check before you sleep and you’ll be fine. But if you haven’t been careful, he could eat you alive!

At night, this spirit appears to drivers on the roads, her ghostly figure dressed all in white. But she doesn’t want to scare those passing by—she tries to warn them of imminent danger. Soon afterward, she vanishes into thin air.

In Brittany, France, you wouldn’t want to cross the path of this old man, perched on his horse-drawn cart. With his scythe in hand, he is the bringer of death! Where his eyes should be, there are instead only two black holes, with glowing candles inside.

In Irish legend, Jack is a cunning man who is so wicked that, when he dies, neither Heaven nor Hell will take him in. The story goes that you can see him on the night of Halloween, wandering like a lost soul, with a glowing pumpkin in hand.

The Sherlock Holmes mystery The Hound of the Baskervilles is based on the myth of the fire-breathing hellhound. In the book, the detective figures out that the hound haunting a family is actually just a dog disguised to scare the family out of their money.
