ADVERTORIAL

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property,

while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

COVER COMPETITION

Our Christmas Cover! Last month we ran our first ever competition for one lucky winner to design our Christmas cover. We were overwhelmed by the response and the number of entries which came flooding in. We even had local schools and after school clubs taking part and sending in artwork from all their children. This was amazing but did pose us with one problem…..how to choose just one winner. As you can see from our cover we did manage this after much deliberation and we were delighted to present Sophie Larkins (aged ) with her prize of a £10 gift voucher courtesy of The Olive Branch Toy Shop, a selection box and a framed copy of the final cover. Well done Sophie – we think it looks great!

Here are just a small sample of the fabulous drawings we received…. Runner Up: SOPHIE ALLEN (aged 10)

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Top Tips for a Happy Christmas with new gadgets Here’s a few tips to make sure that the kids awaiting new gadgets from Santa have a great Christmas, and as parents, you have a stress free time too! Whilst gaming is meant to be fun, its also a risky place to be for a few reasons: • If you’ve bought a new gadget or tech item for your child, open it up. Check it over, do any initial setups, registration, download updates etc. Most importantly of all make sure it has batteries or is fully charged. • Check whether the device you have bought has the facility for parental controls. It is advisable to see how restrictions work, to ensure that your child remains safe whilst in the connected world. • It is also imperative to familiarise yourself with how any information from the device may be shared. What info does the gadget collect, where is it stored, does it take photos and recordings – are they safe? Does it use location-based services, and can it be turned off? • Wherever you buy the new gadget from, don’t be put off asking for tips and help from the retailer

selling it to you. They should be experienced enough to answer any questions you might have. • Last and most importantly, familiarise yourself with how it works. Your child will be eager to get going with it on the day. If you know how it all works, it can make the whole experience better and one to share together. If you are stuck and don’t know where to turn, our team at PC Clinic are your technology experts and can often help with most things. Visit us at Huntingdon Court, Ashby – www.pcclinic-ashby.co.uk

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

Top Tips for Staying Fit and Healthy over Christmas 1. Set Realistic Exercise Goals Average around half an hour per day, it helps keep your metabolism higher which will help your body process any over eating. 2. Drink Plenty of Water Helps you to control your appetite and keep you hydrated, minimising the impact of any hangovers. 3. Eat Little and Often Eat evenly throughout the day, and do not eat everything at once as your body doesn't have time to digest and tell you that it has had enough. Eat your dinner earlier and have a nice walk before going to bed.

6. Avoid Skipping Meals Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast! Even though it can be tempting to skip on certain meals, believing that it will make up for the treats you consumed in the previous day, don’t do it.

4. Plan your Workouts and make them a Priority Do your workout early in the morning when everyone else is in bed so that you are still spending quality time with your family. Ignore the 'Oh come on, it's Christmas' comments.

7. Include Weight Training in your Workouts This will burn lots of calories, especially when you are resting afterwards!

5. Drink in Moderation Alcohol is a massive calorie 'adder.' Ask yourself whether you will enjoy Christmas any more than you might if you controlled your intake.

TINDLE

TREE CARE

8. Have a Great Time! Still eat the so called forbidden foods but control the quantity of them otherwise you will want them even more if they are forbidden.

SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST Christmas at the Mill - Sunday 2nd Dec

One of our most popular events is back again, an enjoyable afternoon at Hough Mill with so much to do. Enjoy our Christmas tree and the decorated mill, see Santa’s Grotto, have a go at the games and crafts, choose a present for a loved one, admire Shaun the sheep. There are lots of events in church, school and village halls, but this is different. Enjoy the mill and woods in a Christmas setting. Hough Mill, St George’s Hill, Swannington, LE67 8QW. See photos on our Hough Mill Facebook page.

Clearing the Gorse Slope

Our Land Management volunteers have been busy removing huge amounts of bramble, overgrown elder and hawthorn. We now have an enormous pile composting down and providing a fantastic habitat for insects and small mammals. The gorse has been pruned to encourage new growth. Now that the slope has been cleared we have found twice as many bushes as we believed we had. Next year we hope to see a mass of gorse flowers, plus wild flowers as the work will have disturbed long dormant seeds and provided the light for them to germinate.

We have a great team but a couple more would be great. Choose between Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. To find out more contact Katrina via swanningtonchair@hotmail.com or 07779 275762.

PET’S CORNER

What foods should you avoid feeding your dog this Christmas? As tempting as it is to share your favourite festive treats with your dog, there are certain foods they shouldn’t eat – and some are potentially deadly. So which ones should you avoid giving to your dog this Christmas? Turkey Turkey is a rich meat that can disturrb a dog’s digestive system, potentially to the point of serious illness. Some dogs may be fine with a tiny amount of white boneless turkey meat, but the skin is very fatty and the bones are a choking hazard. Mince pies, Christmas pudding, and Christmas cake Raisins are severely toxic to dogs, with grape and raisin poisoning being a comm mon problem often requiring veterinaryy intervention to prevent further serious health issues – one of thesee being kidney failure. Chocolate hat Chocolate is one Christmas treat th needs to be avoided at all costs, un nless

you buy doggy chocs for your pet. Chocolate contains a compound that’s poisonous to dogs – in fact, chocolate poisoning is so serious that if they eat too much they’ll need to have their stomach pumped. Nuts Nuts can cause severe gastro-iintestinal problems for your dog, with obstruction of the bowel being a particular issue. Some varieties of nut, including pecans and walnuts, can bring on seizures and should be avoided at all costs. Clearly there’s a case for watching your dog very carefully over Christmas. It’s all too easy to leave chocolate or nuts lying around, and they’re only too quick to take advantage of the fact.

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS

Planning permission update

We’re really pleased to let all our patients know that we have at last received planning permission for our new extension. This will comprise an exciting new modern reception to be built at the front of the existing surgery. The current reception area will then be converted into new consulting rooms. The whole downstairs part of the surgery will be modernised and brought up to current standards for medical buildings.

Doctor changes

We’re really sorry to be saying goodbye to Dr Florence in December. She has been a fantastic member of the team and we know patients think very highly of her. However we have Dr Solanki joining us 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Friday) to take over from Dr Florence. Dr Solanki worked for many years at a practice in Hinckley and Bosworth so she is a very experienced GP. We hope patients will join us in welcoming her to the team.

Christmas and New Year

We will be closing at 4pm on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. If you need urgent medical assistance between 4pm and our usual closing time of 6.30pm, please ring our surgeries and you will be automatically transferred to an out of hours medical service. Finally we’d like to wish all our patients a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all your support in 2018.

#ProtectYourVVan ke a In this month’s article we tak wners look at the measures van ow can take to safeguard both nts their vehicles and any conten ople especially tools for tradespeo as vehicle crime remains on the t rise. Whilst many of these tip ps are just as relevant for car owners the e advice is particularly targeted at anyb body who owns a van. Now that the clocks have gone back and the nights are darker earlier, make sure you keep your van locked securely and parked in a well-lit area or near a security light. Doing so is a quick and easy way to deter thieves. Protect your business by avoiding leaving big, expensive tools inside your van. Keep them locked up somewhere secure. If it is not possible for you to remove tools from your vehicle every day, fit a tool safe and ensure it is fully secured with good quality locks. Leicestershire Police are employing a number of overt and covert tactics in order to prevent offences and catch anyone carrying out criminal activity. We are also being proactive in tackling this type of crime. However, we really need your help. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. There are some simple actions you can take to deter would-be thieves. These include: • Remove tools from vans over night • Lock tools in a garage - If that’s not possible then think about how you keep your vehicle, ideally in a well lit area or backed onto another vehicle to make it difficult to get to the doors. 52

Find us online at www.ibstocklife.co.uk

•C Consider id installing i t lli CCTV • Consider robust tool safes within the vehicle • Tool marking to assist with identifying your property should you become a victim of crime. • For expensive tools, it would be worth considering buying a tool tracking device to make recovery easier. Take these steps and protect your van! PC GARRY JOHNSON Tel: 101 garry.johnson@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN

The Christmas rose The Christmas rose would make a lovely seasonal gift. A Christmas legend says that this plant appeared in Bethlehem when an old shepherd who had no gift for baby Jesus cried and his tears turned to flowers to give to the baby. The Latin name for the Christmas rose is Helleborous Niger. It is an evergreen perennial which is actually a member of the buttercup family. The flowers are similar looking to a wild rose, but do not belong to the rose family. The erect stems support flowers with petals which look like velvet paper which appear in a blast of beautiful wintery whiteness. The flowers of this hardy plant are usually continuous from December to February and sometimes for longer from November to March. This plant grows to around 30cm high and looks good in perennial borders and as under planting to the canopy of trees or the edges of deciduous shrubs. It grows well in shade and partial shade and is suitable for our local clay soil, and also in light and well drained soil. In addition, it is tolerant of acidic and alkaline soil. This popular plant has the Royal Horticultural Society ’ss Award of Garden Merit. Snow will make the plant droop a bit but otherwise it is unaffected and the flowers spring g back ack up up.

After a few years the plants can be divided into 2 or 3 plants and spread around to create a lovely grouping. The leaves are a dark green setting off beautifully the crisp whiteness of the flower. Especially after the plant has finished flowering and is past its best it can be tidied up by removing browning leaves and any leggy stems. I usually do this at the end of March or April. The Christmas rose can be grown in pots in john Innes potting compost too. Placing the plants in a cold frame or green house can encourage early flowering. There are Hellebores flowers which range from colours of deep purple to light pink and lime green. Some have purple spotted leaves. Helleborous orientalis sometimes called the Lantern rose is another Hellebore I regularly use in peoples’ gardens as a slightly later flowering variety. It is always interesting to delve into the story of a plant and it is uplifting to learn that the Christmas rose is said to symbolise a pioneering spirit and survival.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS Winter is here – time to get outdoors and grab some daylight! In conservation, winter is for digging over beds in community gardens and allotments, for tree felling and rounds of scrub clearance, especially rhododendron, blackthorn, and bramble. It is also the season for warming bonfires, toasted marshmallows and mince pies. Throughout winter why not take a little time off and get outdoors? Spending time in the great outdoors surrounded by nature has been proven to improve your health and wellbeing, and to reduce stress. Whether it is a walk with the dog; taking the kids/grandkids out to the local park; or, for the more ambitious, doing one of the National Forest’s circular walks, you can almost guarantee you will return feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Grab your coat, pull on your wellies and give it a go, it’s free for all the family! Over December TCV’s National Forest team

will be at Swadlincote Woodlands urban park for our regular first-Tuesday-of-the-month event as well as carrying out some hedgelaying at Thornton Meadows on Tuesday 11th & 18th December. Come and join us for conservation exercise, to meet new people and reconnect with nature, keeping away those winter blues. TCV the community volunteering charity works in the National Forest with a regular group of conservation volunteers to create healthier, happier communities for everyone. If you’d like to join us and can spare the time in this busy period, do get in touch: kay.thompson@tcv.org. uk or check our website tcv.org.uk/volunteering to see all local upcoming opportunities.
