BODY MATTERS

Common Myths about

lower back pain There is a lot of different advice out there about how best to deal with lower back pain. So we’re going to blow the lid off some of the most common myths and help you get back on track with your recovery. MYTH 1

I hurt my back, so now I will probably have back pain for the rest of my life. Wrong! You can get bad episodes but these do not have to be disabling forever. If you do start having back pain, seek help ASAP to get the advice you need to manage and prevent the pain.

MYTH 2

I have back pain so I should stay in bed and rest. Nope! Whilst avoiding aggravating activities will definitely help, returning to usual activities is important to aiding your recovery – prolonged inactivity is generally unhelpful and as long as exercise is increased gradually, you can actually reduce the risk of future pain! Talk to your physio about a long term plan.

MYTH 3

The more back pain I have, the more my spine is damaged.

MYTH 5

I need a scan or x-ray for my back pain. Inaccurate! Only a very small number of these tests actually contribute to better management of the problem. Clinical examinations are usually enough to identify the problems for the majority of people.

MYTH 6

I need an operation to cure my back pain.

My back pain must be due to something being out of place.

False! Surgery is a higher risk treatment and so is only used if there is no other option available to the individual. The vast majority of people can manage their problem by staying active (with advice), developing a better understanding of the problem and learning how not to aggravate it. This should help them continue their usual daily tasks, without having to resort to surgery.

Untrue! There are a very small amount of people who will experience some change in their spinal alignment but that doesn’t necessarily increase the risk of lower back pain

All in all, it is best to see your physiotherapist and let the experts give you the best advice! You can call ProPhysio on 01530 588 557 or visit our website: www.prophysiomidlands.co.uk

Incorrect! More pain doesn’t always mean more damage and it is dependent on a whole manner of different factors, including previous problems, fitness and coping strategies.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

Make Motivation and Goal Setting your Fuel for Success

Using motivation as your fuel for a more healthy, fit and balanced lifestyle is definitely the way to go but what if you struggle with motivation and attitude? This is where goal setting comes into the equation. Take some time out to reflect on what you want and then start to think about how you are going to achieve it, what time and resources you have in order to help you achieve it and when you want to achieve it by. Write it all down, set a deadline, monitor your progress on the way and achieve your goal!

You can achieve anything you want if you put your mind to it and get the right help and support...... all you have to do is stick to your plan no matter what. An example of this is the LOROS fundraising event we held in July. Goals on the gym kit were set for each participant, sponsor forms were issued, motivational support was provided, all gym challenges were achieved on the day and an amazing £10,692 was raised for LOROS.....all in the space of half a day!! Be motivated, set goals and feel the power!

MONEY MATTERS

Eight Reasons to use a Financial Adviser Many people think that financial advice is only required by the very rich. However, everyone can benefit from it. Not only can it help you protect and build your assets, it can help you make the most of your investments and help secure you and your family’s long term future. 1: To protect your family There are a lot of people trying to sell you insurance of one type or another but an adviser can tell you which one is actually worth buying. They will assess your position and guide you through the best options. 2: To help plan your spending and saving To secure your long-term future, you need to build some assets. Step one is to plan your spending so that you begin to save and step two is to plan that saving so that you can build your wealth as efficiently as possible. A financial adviser will find the best starting point for you. 3: To help you plan for retirement Most people these days realise they cannot rely on the State for more than the absolute basics. However, planning for retirement is a complex business. A financial adviser will not only help sift through the many rules and product options but also help construct a portfolio to maximise your long term prospects. 4: To secure your house Buying a house is still one of the most expensive decisions we make, and the vast majority of us need a mortgage. A financial adviser could save you thousands. Not only can they seek out the best rates, they can help you assess sensible levels of borrowing and might also find lenders who would otherwise not be available to you. 5: To help meet your investment goals As you progress through life, you begin to build your assets and your income begins to increase. You then start considering how you can enhance your position rather than simply consolidate it. However your dreams evolve, a financial adviser can help assess what is realistically possible and put the best plan in place to help you achieve it.

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS Research

Ibstock & Barlestone Surgeries are a research practice. This means we take part in studies which can help improve the health of patients both now and in the future. These studies can be questionnaires, interviews or involve patients going to hospitals to take part in drug or other types of trials. When we’re sent a research study, we search for patients on our database who meet the criteria and send them a letter to invite them to take part. Participation is always voluntary but we appreciate it very much when patients do agree. Sometimes the study may benefit these patients directly and sometimes the benefit will be for others in the future.

Can you help?

We’re currently recruiting patients and their families to a study about Managing Medicines at Home. If you have a relative who is seriously ill (although not with cancer) and is on many medications and you’re doing your best to manage their medications with them, the study

team would be keen to hear from you. They would like to do some interviews about any issues you have come up against and what could be done to improve the situation for you. They would also like to hear from any recently bereaved families of patients who had a serious illness and were on many medications (again though not if the patient passed away from cancer) and to interview you about the issues you had helping your relative with their medications. This would just be one interview. If you are interested in helping with this study please contact the surgery on 01530 263467 and ask for Claire Kiffin.

-- ADVERTORIAL --

GardeninG Tips:

Moss Special

After the long dry summer, gardens may be prone to problems with moss as we head into the colder months. Kevin from Green Thumb Ashby explains why and offers some valuable advice on how to tackle this issue. LAWN ISSUES: MOSS Moss thrives in damp and shady areas; lawns usually affected are those with heavy surface thatch or clay soil. It is important never to cut your lawn less than 25mm (1”) as scalped lawns are also prone to moss. WILL RAKING GET RID OF MOSS? Raking will only remove the dead moss, it will not cure it. Instead, we recommend hollow-tine aeration and scarification, which eliminates one of the main causes of moss - thatch. Moss loves a moist, rich environment and therefore loves thatch.

BEFORE

THATCH Thatch is the matted layer, made up of living and dead organic matter, found between the grass plant leaf and the soil surface. Thatch (over 15mm or ½”) creates ideal conditions for moss and disease to thrive and, by reducing water, air and nutrients getting to the roots, it also prevents the grass plant from flourishing. HOW CAN GREENTHUMB HELP? To reduce thatch that has built up during the year, we recommend machine work hollow-tine aeration and scarification annually. This will also improve the growing conditions of the grass plant, resulting in a much healthier lawn. HOLLOW-TINE AERATION Hollow-tine aeration punches out thousands of cores from the lawn, this thins out sub-surface thatch and reduces compaction. SCARIFICATION Scarification is a rigorous and thorough operation which uses knives and blades to remove surface thatch; its main objective is not moss removal, but the removal of the cause of moss.

AFTER

POST SCARIFICATION This treatment is a valuable micro-nutrient which helps with recovery and also prevents moss spores from re-establishing. Green Thumb offer a free lawn health check any time at no cost, to all current or potential customers and will make themselves available to answer any questions or concerns you have about your lawn. Call 01530 244552 or email ashby@greenthumb. co.uk today for a free lawn health check and see how Green Thumb can benefit your lawn.

A WALK IN THE FOREST

A great family walk

Normanton Le Heath A pretty, circular, walk that crosses faarmland between the villages o of Normanton Le Heath and SSwepstone. On the first half of the e walk you get a good view of the w ttower of Swepstone Church while o on th he retu urn loop you can see tthe spire off Norm manton Church. TThere is a bit of quiiet lane at the start of the walk and a short road section th hrough Swepstone. The paths were mostly very well marked with the exception of the start of the return path from Swepstone where it leads off the road onto to the drive of Upperfield Farm, it is signed after you leave the farm though. Allow about an hour and a half for this walk. The instructions start from Main Street in Normanton, I parked on the road near the church. The postcode for Sat Nav users is LE67 2TB.

1

2

Walk down Main Street with the Ch hurch (1) on your left and pass by The Hollow w. The lane soon bends sharply right and shortly afte er the bend there is a public footpath sign on your leeft. Climb the stile (2) and follow the path into a fie eld. The path passes beside a bank of beautiful, old, hawthorn trees which are absolutely stunning when in full bloom, and leads to a second stile which h, liike the first, is fitted with a handy dog gate beside e itt. Immediately after crossing the stile and plank brid dge the path splits - you need to take the right han nd fork to bear diagonally right across the field. Crosss a small bridge in the valley and then walk uphill to a stile set in the far field hedge - keep your eye ou ut for the yellow footpath post ahead when you are on the brow of the hill. The path now bears slightly left l ft - you are quite high up and get a goo od view of the tower of Swepstone Ch hurch off to your left.

3

42

Cro ossing a further stile, set in the co orner of the field, follow the yellow arrrows left and then right, before going up a short section n of fie field d edge to reach h a junction of paths (3). Don’t go through the gap ahead or follow either of the arrows but instead turn left before the gap in the wooden fence (the red arrow for the path

this way is hidden, being on the back of the yellow post to your right). You are now going down the field edge with the hedgerow on your right. Keep straight ahead d, passing across a farm track. You are soon on a grasssy lane (4) which bends around before finally emerging onto a tarmac drive which will take you up to the road through Swepstone.

4

TTurn left, keeping to the verge and then the pavement as you pass through the village. Continue until you u pass ‘The Cottage’, on your le eft and then take the stile beside a metal gate ju ust affter it on your leftt. (5) A grass path crosses the small en nclosure to a furtther gate onto a driveway (if you u walk a sh hort distance fu urther along the road you u can turrn le eft into the same drivewaay). The drive passes a sign welc w comin ng you to Upperfield Farm and then leads past th he houses and through a black h the end of the gate. As you reach yard you will see a sign reading Public Footpath to Normanton, just to the left of the stable block. This narrow path lead ds you up the side of the building and d along a field where where the bridleway and footpath separate (6). Fo ollow the footpaath sign, left and then right keepin ng to the narrow path h up the field edge. Cross a plank bridge and continue uphill along anotheer field edge.

5

At the top of the hill keep sttraight ahead to pass under the telegraph poles which h come in from your left. Keep the field hedge on your rig ght and look out for the spire of Norrmanton Le Heath ch hurch ahead of you. Pass ove er a stone bridge and th hen follow a footpath arrow diagonally left across the field,. When you reach the stile, in the hedge on the far side of the field, you are rejoining your outgoing ro oute. Cross the stile to re enter the field with the bank of old hawthorn (now on your right) and then cross the final sttile back onto Normanton Lane. Turn n right and follow the lane back to return to your start point. All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

PET’S CORNER

Indoor games for wet autumn days When the summer has gone and you’re not able to get out as much with your dog, it’s important to keep them active even if they’re in the house. Try these indoor games to stimulate mind and body, prevent boredom, and let your dog thrive through the wetter autumn months. Treasure Hunt It’s a good ideaa to play this game in a room that has carpet c or other non-slip flooring so you ur dog doesn’t injure itself in the exccitement. Hide some of their favourite ttreats in one or more areas of your home, and let them hunt for the t ‘treasure’. If your dog is mo ore tempted by toyys, you could alwaays replace the treats with their favourite

ones. This is also a good game if you make people they know the ‘treasure’ – especially when children are involved as it keeps them entertained too. Treat puzzles Stimulate your dog’s mind with chewable toys, puzzles, and activity balls in which you hide food ttreats. t It will ill ttake k some ti time to t work out how to balls keep get to the treats, and the activity a oo. them physically active to Ball games way, you can roll the If you have a long hallw ball along and get them to bring it back. Throwing a ball up the staairs is also a great way to give them the exercise they need without setting foot outside. You’ll have tired friend on a very v your hands before long, ready to play again the next rainy day.

BOOK REVIEWS

Twisted Fairy Tales

If you like your fairy tales more Brothers Grimm than Disney, you’re in for a treat with this lot… The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories Angela Carter Angela Carter is often seen as the queen of the reimagined fairy tale. In this collection, the stories are as dark, twisted and brilliantly written as they come. The main story, The Bloody Chamber, is a retelling of the French folk tale Bluebeard, which sees a young wife make a gruesome discovery in a locked room at her new husband’s house. The collection also includes retellings of Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Red Riding Hood. The Surface Breaks Louise O’Neill The Surface Breaks is a feminist reimagining of The Little Mermaid. In Gaia’s world, mermaids are supposed to look good, entertain the mermen and stay subservient. Gaia’s father, the king, rules with an iron fist. Gaia swaps her life underwater, her tail and her voice for a chance with the man she saves from a shipwreck. But is he really worth it? An intriguing, thought-provoking tale. Revolting Rhymes Roald Dahl Dahl’s childhood classic is more than 35 years old but still just as funny today. Six well-known fairy stories are reimagined in rhyme, with various twists to the tales and extra helpings of gore. Cinderella’s stepsister has her head chopped off, Red Riding Hood turns out to be a crack shot with a pistol and Jack’s mum gets eaten when she climbs the beanstalk. Great fun for kids and parents alike.

Grimm Tales for Old and Young Philip Pullman Pullman has reworked 50 of the Grimm brothers’ tales. He’s kept most of the content the same, but updated the language and ‘tidied them up’. The collection includes wellknown tales, such as Rapunzel, Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin, along with lesser-known stories such as Hans-MyHedgehog and The Musicians of Bremen. The True Story of Hansel and Gretel Louise Murphy In Nazi-occupied Poland, two Jewish children take on new identities – Hansel and Gretel. Pursued by soldiers, the children’s father and stepmother urge the children to seek safety in the forest while they try to draw the danger away. Deep in the woods lives an old woman who may be the children’s only hope. A harrowing read, but a memorable one. Kissing the Witch Emma Donoghue Donoghue wrote Kissing the Witch long before her bestselling Room. It’s a collection of 13 rewritten wellknown tales, including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. Whether it’s Cinderella choosing the Fairy Godmother over the prince, or Beauty discovering an entirely unexpected Beast, the tales are original and wellwritten. They’re also very short – perfect for enjoying over a coffee break.

SEASONAL RECIPES

tartlets

SALTED CARAMEL, CHOCOLATE AND CHILLI It may sound like an unusual combination but a hint of fiery chilli complements a rich chocolate dessert perfectly. Serve with a spoonful of thick cream or Greek yogurt for a really indulgent dessert.

MAKES Ready 6 1 hour in chilling plus time

YOU WILL NEED l l

l l l

l

l

l

Flour, for dusting 250g ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry 260g jar salted caramel sauce 25g unsalted butter 100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 1 small red chilli, deseeded and chopped Shredded fresh basil leaves, to decorate Icing sugar, for dusting

METHOD

TOP TIP Blanch the chopped chilli pepper in boiling water for one minute, then refresh under cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper. This will remove a little of the fiery heat from the chilli. If you prefer, replace the fresh chopped chilli with a sprinkle of dried chilli flakes.

1. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness. Use to line six 10cm tartlet tins. Prick the bases with a fork and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. 2. Line each tartlet tin with a circle of baking paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes. Remove the beans and paper and bake the tarts for a further 4-5 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Leave to cool completely, then remove the pastry cases from the tins and place on a board.

58

3. Divide the salted caramel sauce between the cold tartlet pastry cases, smoothing the surfaces level with the back of a teaspoon. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 4. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir the mixture until smooth. Cool for 20 minutes then spread over the salted caramel filling. Chill for 1 hour or until set. 5. To serve, sprinkle the chopped chilli pepper over the set chocolate topping and scatter over the shredded basil (if using). Dust with icing sugar.
