Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
2
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BODY MATTERS
Shocking News! Shock Wave Therapy (SWT) has had a lot of positive press recently - international results show an overall success rate of 77% for some chronic conditions that are often a challenge to cure with traditional therapy. SWT involves a hand held device that has a projectile in it that strikes an applicator at high speed and relatively high frequency to create a shock wave through the tissue. This causes cavitation bubbles to be formed in the tissue and, in turn, has been found to accelerate the healing process in certain chronic conditions. Problems such as plantar fasciitis in the heel, shoulder tendon conditions, tennis elbow, golfers elbow and patellar tendon conditions (knee) respond very well and can often be totally cured with SWT. This form of treatment lasts approximately 10 minutes and usually requires between 4 & 6 sessions to have good effect, but following as few as 2 sessions many

people start to experience significant pain relief. SWT has a bright future in injury management and although a rarity in Midlands based therapy practices, some have decided that its proven benefits are of clear value. ProPhysio have decided to invest in this exciting new piece of equipment, so should you be suffering with any of the conditions mentioned and would like to learn more about what SWT has to offer, please contact Darrin at ProPhysio on 01530 588557

IN YOUR GARDEN
Ancient Oaks and Robin Hood Calke Abbey boasts oak trees over 600 years old. You can observe these ancient trees by walking in Calke Park on any day of the year. ‘The Old Man’ of Calke is an oak tree estimated by the National Trust to be between 700 and 1000 years old. The Park has over 200 huge ancient oaks trees and the ‘pink walk’ (set out in the walking guide) is a riverside walk especially mapped out to show off the range of trees including ‘The Old Man’. Arguably one of the most famous locations for an ancient oak tree is about 30 miles away at Sherwood Forest. Indeed the largest ancient oak here is called ‘The Major Oak’ named after a 19th century archaeologist who surveyed trees in Sherwood Forest. This however is not the reason for the tree’s fame: it is of course because it was said to have sheltered Robin Hood and his Merry Men from the Sherriff of Nottingham in a secret hollow in the trunk of the tree. It is said The Major Oak’s longevity was due to it being planted away from the completion of other trees, so that it did not have to compete with other trees for nutrients and light, and it grew slowly and steadily, in a rather poor acid soil. Presently the old branches are propped up and it is fenced off to protect thousands of feet causing compaction in the soil around its roots. Many large old oaks have big hollows in their trunks but a hollow tree can still be healthy and

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 strong. The decaying wood within the hollow is a source of food and shelter for many creatures. In 2014 The Major Oak was awarded England’s Tree of the Year. The Major Oak has a girth of over 10meters and its branches spread 28 meters and it is estimated to weigh 23 tonnes. It is said to be 800-100 years old and is one of nearly a thousand ancient oaks within Sherwood Forest. Planting of oak trees is still widespread and locally within the National Forest oak trees were planted as part of the creation of new native and indigenous woodlands. Oak trees are wonderful for supporting the environment. Fungus, birds, insects and toads are among the creatures that house themselves with in oak tree. Actually a single mature oak is said to support over 250 species of wildlife and forms. An oak takes about 300 years growing, 300 years resting and 300 years declining. The trees actually shrink after about 500 years and become squatter, probably a strategy to cope with strong winds. Acorns and oak trees are said to be a symbol of longevity, humble beginnings, patience, faith and power. Although fantastic in parkland setting and large gardens, these trees are not appropriate for a small modern garden and should be planted at least 10 meters from a house, and also consider the shade you create by planting and don’t plant in such a way as to block out your neighbours light.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Are you new to the town? Are you interested in Ashby de la Zouch and how it came to be; its hidden histories, why there is a castle, why there was a canal, a tramway and a spa? Visit us to find out more and help spread the word. If you have a couple of hours or so a fortnight to spare and would like to be involved in supporting this tremendous asset to the town, please get in touch with us on 01530 560090. You will be warmly welcomed. We are pleased to receive the Betty and John Halsall collection, relating to Ashby musical operatic groups – the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Ashby Operatic Society and the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group – all from 1962 to the present day. Further to last month’s issue, we now have five large sales ledgers of Stevenson and Barratt estate agents acquisitions from the 1920s to the 1980s, covering private homes, businesses, farms etc. Yours might be among them! The next temporary exhibition in April and May features paintings by local artist, Julie Barnett. Julie was inspired by Frank Brown’s collection of butterflies and moths, which is held here at the museum.

Visit www.forestry.gov.uk/hickslodge for more information.
After the slumber of winter the gardens at Calke Abbey are waking up and you can watch the gardeners at work. The gardens are open every day from 10am until 5pm. There is over 600 acres of parkland to explore by joining one of the guided walks or downloading your own trail from the website at: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey/ Don’t forget the newly extended Tramway trail which is perfect for cycling.
Sence Valley Forest Park Is a 60 hectare country park created by Leicestershire County Council on a former opencast colliery site near Ibstock. It is free to explore and open daily from 8am until 7pm. There are a network of trails suitable for walkers and cyclists and the woodland is teaming with wildlife, with over 150 species of birds spotted to date. HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
If you want to lose weight, include weight training in your regime. Most people avoid using weights, thinking that they will make them gain weight! Doing the cardio and avoiding the weights seems to be the ‘norm.’ You are out of breath and your heart rate is up, so you will surely lose weight? Truth is that weights play a big part in weight loss, reducing body fat, speeding up metabolism and toning/sculpting your body. Give it a go....... Try working on weight machines or free weights that use more than one muscle group or one large muscle group like chest press or leg extensions. That way you are burning up more fuel and speeding up your metabolism even 24 hours later! Alternating the muscle groups you are working enables you to work more continuously, as one muscle group is resting
while you work the other; therefore burning even more energy! For even better results you could work in intervals of say 4 minutes cardio followed by 4 minutes continuous weights. This is the most effective way to train for all levels of fitness and the most time effective way to get results. Your body is changing from one system to the other, every 4 minutes, making you work much harder. It leads to much better use of your gym time and even better results! Weights improve your bone density, joint stability and core strength making it essential for you to include them in your regime!

A WALK IN THE FOREST supplied by Liz Roberts
Melbourne Parklands
Noon Column
This, our third of the six carved noon columns, is a smooth and elegant structure carved out of English oak. The column is situated within the Staunton Harold Estate and our circular walk takes us down part of the driveway to this lovely estate before heading out towards Lount on a farm track. Looping around we return via a hard path that winds down through young woodland to reach the site of the noon column. This is a shortened version of the Staunton Harold/ Lount Loop walk featured in Walks for all in the Heart of the Forest. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for your walk - if you fancy refreshments afterwards you can choose from the tea rooms within the garden centre or those at the Ferrers Centre.
1
The starting point for this walk is the visitors car park in the Staunton Harold estate - this is situated between the garden centre and the entrance to the woodland paths. Parking is usually free in the week but there is a charge at weekends. Sat nav users should use the postcode LE65 1RT.
2
After parking leave the visitors car park by the main entrance and turn left onto the one way section of the estate driveway. Follow the road down, passing by the grounds and buildings of Staunton Harold Hall on your your left until you reach the point where the driveway bends sharply to the left. Here you will see the entrance to a farm track immediately ahead of you. Go through the wooden gate with the footpath marker beside it and walk straight ahead, passing fields and woodland, until the track forks.
3
4 Take the right hand fork and very soon after this turn onto a path leading off to the right. Follow this path up, passing by Dog Kennel Barn, until you come to a gateway on your right that gives access to a hard path through the young woodland. Pass through the gate and follow the path down past Emily Jane’s Wood. Keep straight ahead on this path for quite some time (ignore a fork that comes in from the left). The path leads slowly downhill past young trees and grassy areas. You will pass by a sign for the Walnut Research Area 2, cross over a small stream and then go over a wooden bridge. After crossing the bridge look out for a green sign for Mixed Maple Woodland on your left - when you reach this sign turn right onto the grass. Walk up the grass for a short way and you will arrive at the noon column. If the weather has been wet I’d advise retracing your steps after you’ve seen the noon column and following the hard path down to the gateway at its end. In dry weather you can walk just past the noon column and then turn left onto a narrow grass path that goes over a ditch and across the grass to reach the same point. Go through the gate and across the end of a field (which may have sheep grazing in it) to the gate leading back onto the driveway opposite the car park. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

BOOK REVIEWS
Be happy with a book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy. Anything You Do Say Gillian McAllister A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train.
Ultimate Fit Food Gordon Ramsey Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for work-outs. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you.
How Not To Be a Boy Robert Webb Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments.
The Paying Guests Sarah Waters It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.
The History of Bees Maja Lunde The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job hand-pollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.

PET’S CORNER
Protecting your pets in the garden If you’re enjoying the warmer weather this springtime, and spending more time in the garden with your pet, here are a few tips to keep both cats and dogs safe and well, and avoid any urgent visits to the vet. Seasonal plants Some spring bulbs and plants can be poisonous to dogs and cats. Daffodils, in particular, cause problems if ingested, but other plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and clematis are also toxic. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and lethargy, potentially leading to dehydration and convulsions. In cases where the most poisonous plants have been consumed, the after-effects may be seen within 15 minutes. Chocolate Easter eggs Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to your dog or cat. Although dark chocolate contains the most theobromine, the levels in milk chocolate are also sufficient to cause serious health problems.
It’s advisable to consult your vet as a matter of urgency if you know that your pet has consumed chocolate – symptoms include rapid breathing, hyperactivity, seizures, vomiting and diarrhoea. Slug and snail pellets As spring is ‘slug season’, you may be tempted to use slug pellets to control this problem in your garden. Dogs and cats tend to find slug pellets tasty, however, and as many brands contain a poisonous substance called metaldehyde, your pet’s health is at serious and immediate risk after ingestion. Look out for symptoms such as muscle spasms, seizures and lack of coordination, and contact your vet as a matter of urgency.
