SPOTLIGHT ON...
Creative Kitchen
Creative Kitchen; a brand new community dining initiative launched last month in Coalville. It’s the creation of Coalville Education Partnership (CEP) with Fareshare and Superkitchen and aims to offer healthy, affordable meals to local people. It’s an important and much needed service to those struggling financially, emotionally and for those coping with loneliness and social isolation. Eating together is a great way to offer support to each other, break down barriers and create a much needed ‘community’ vibe which some people may not be able to experience. Fareshare redistribute surplus food to charities and communities to reduce waste. Last year they redistributed 13,552 tonnes of food across 1,300 towns and cities – enough food for 28.6million meals! Superkitchen created the concept of social eating spaces with a clear goal in mind; to make a positive impact on food waste, food poverty and social isolation. Since 2013 they have worked with community groups to support social eating in each local area. Together with Fareshare and Superkitchen CEP are now able to offer Creative Kitchen here in Coalville. The service will be offered twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays from 3.30pm to 5pm at Unit 1-2 Market Street, Coalville with the aim of providing a nourishing and healthy meal for up to 50 people.

People will have the option of prebooking into the Creative Kitchen and there will also be limited availability to ‘drop in’ on the day. Included with the drop in will be the option for those who cannot make those timings of being able to collect and ‘take-away’ a meal. Details of the meal will be advertised the Friday before through Facebook and Twitter. The prices will be £3 per adult, £2 per child or £10 for a group ticket of 2 adults & 3 children (adults and children could be family, friends, neighbours - there’s no exclusion on who can be in the group). Jason Knibbs, Managing Director for CEP commented; ‘Creative Kitchen aims to attract as many people within walking distance as possible. Our doors will be open to anyone, there will be no vetting criteria and so people from all walks of life will be welcomed. Whether working or living in the town please come and meet and eat with your local community.’ Find out more on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ coalvilleep/ and book group tickets at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/creative-kitchen-socialeating-event-in-coalville-tickets-4187108654

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS
All your questions about the surgery answered (hopefully!) We know that many of our patients don’t contact the surgery very often and are perhaps unsure of the way things work here. To help you understand our systems, we have produced a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. This document (which runs to several pages) is available from both our receptions and also on our web site on our Patient Downloads page. It aims to answer questions such as how our appointment system works, what happens after you’ve had a blood test, how do you get a sick note, and many other questions patients regularly ask us. We hope you’ll find it helpful and would welcome feedback and to know of any other questions you think would be usefully added to it. Using the Internet to order repeat medications, book a telephone appointment and see your medical records. If you regularly order medication from us, you can get a login so that you can re-order regular repeat medications and book a telephone appointment

IN YOUR GARDEN
Generation indoor gardening The cool and creative youngsters that are in the ‘Generation Rent’ club have found a hip new way of gardening. The lack of property ownership amongst the young hasn’t kept them from gardening – they are making it small scale, transportable and it’s indoors. Ikea for example have designed sleek and minimal cultivators that don’t look out of place in the sleekest kitchens. Growing kits can include a sort of minimal tiered trolley or sideboard, with trays for pots, compost and seeds. The growing mediums are light and packed with nutrients. Some kits also include cultivation light to combat the short winter days. A yearning for growing plants, a creative streak, a nurturing instinct, and an interest in nature - any of these has contributed to a new surge in sales of house plants, succulents, micro vegetables and even home-grown edible flowers for decorating cocktails and cakes. A similar new trend is Aquascaping - this is planting aquariums (a wonderfully transportable garden!) It is so popular that courses are available at garden centres. In bigger towns and cities, restaurants frequently have trendy displays of plants, cool

ceramic jars or urban style steel containers, all artistically arranged on shelves or hooked onto steel trellis-covered walls. Another surge in sales is for ‘Air Plants’ which are fascinating (they need no compost at all – just air) and are increasingly used to create a modern interior living wall. They can be suspended from wire or bark and these can be fixed with waterproof glue to create whatever pattern you fancy: symmetrical, asymmetrical, random – whatever. The light green foliage is stunning against a trendy dark blue or grey painted wall. The air plants are easy to care for and just need regularly misting with a fine spray. As a central table arrangement in a sunny space, small succulents or cacti, arranged in a shallow bowl, will need only minimal maintenance, but look very interesting. One can easily make a unique and individual display. It is rather like the creation of a landscape in miniature. There are so many positives to this new trendapart from being able to actively take care of plants without having to face the winter weather. Growing vegetables inside is a good way for children to learn about nature and be involved in growing food – even on rainy days. Young children will have a greater knowledge of how food is grown rather than it just appearing in supermarkets. In many warmer European cities where most of the accommodation is in apartments, the residents cultivate a few essential herbs in window boxes. In the UK where it is colder, Basil, Parsley, Oregano, Chives and Thyme can be grown inside on a sunny windowsill if you water and mist the plants regularly.
Happy gardening!

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MONEY MATTERS
Spring Clean
An early for your finances
I thought I would offer some thoughts on the things you should be doing as you recover from Christmas and before the new tax year begins even though we are few months away from April.
ISA’s
• It is an allowance which if not used each tax year is lost. (Currently £20,000) • You can mix up allowance between a Cash and Stocks & Shares ISA if that helps. • Remember you can convert Cash ISA’s into Stocks & Shares ISA’s or vice versa, as once transferred they retain their historical ISA status. • ISA’s are very useful products when investing for the short, medium and long term. • You can decide the risk structure for your investments.
GIFTING
• If you want to gift from your estate then you have multiple options. • You have a £3,000 ‘Gift Allowance’ each year, plus you can carry forward any unused annual gift allowance from the previous year, but only 1 years’ worth. • Gift £250 to anyone you like. • You also have marriage gift allowances.
PENSION SAVINGS
• Investing in a Pension plan benefits from tax relief at the rate you pay income tax. • There is a ceiling on how much you can invest each year as an individual, currently £40,000. • Yes you can, if available and appropriate, carry forward previous year’s unused relief – but it is wise to seek advice on how this is calculated first. • Even if you are someone who does not pay any tax you can invest up to £3,600 into a 26
Find us online at www.whatsaround.co.uk
Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd pension and still benefit from tax relief – many of my clients do this for their children and grandchildren.
FINAL TIP - 2018 WISHES
• Have fun and create 2 or 3 wishes for 2018 – everyone tends to undertake resolutions and sadly fail – I recommend you create ideas on things you want to not what you should do. • Write them down on a card for example and display them, on the fridge door or somewhere prominent so they keep reminding you to make them happen. • Life is not a rehearsal. These are just a few tips or hints. We do suggest it may be wise you seek advice before undertaking any major steps with your finances. In a collection of recent reports it has shown that taking Independent Financial Advice potentially adds value to the decisions you make in the long term. It could help you plan and undertake the appropriate steps which are relevant to your circumstances and requirements. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and may not get back the full amount you invest. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Tax Treatment depends on your individual circumstances and are subject to change.

PET’S CORNER
Caring For an Older Dog When your dog ages, it begins to slow down and generally puts on weight. It may struggle with arthritis, making it difficult to move around with ease, particularly during the colder months. So what can you do to alleviate the symptoms of old age for your dog? Here are a few ideas that could put the spring back in their step. Glucosamine and chondroitin Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can aid movement by protecting your dog’s cartilage, lubricating their joints, and easing the pain of arthritis. It may take a while to get into their system, so it needs to be taken regularly. Individual needs vary, however, so speak to your vet, as they’ll be able to tell you the recommended dosage for your pet. Check their diet A dog’s nutritional needs change as they age, and you may find that as they become less active, the requirement for protein reduces. If your dog doesn’t want to eat one large meal a day, you could try offering them two or three smaller meals – this
Divorce
might ease their digestion, and make them more comfortable at night. Keep exercising Even though they’re slowing down, it’s important to exercise regularly. This may mean having shorter, more frequent walks, rather than one long outing every day. Your pet will benefit from the fresh air and exercise, whatever the distance you walk. Caring for an older dog isn’t difficult. You just need to adjust the routine to account for their changing needs – much like us humans.

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
My top tips to make this your best February ever! February can be a difficult month. All the excitement of Christmas and the New Year celebrations seem a distant memory. The longer, lighter days of spring seem a long way off still and those New Year resolutions which saw you through January may now have lost their drive.
4. Focus on the moment as energy can be wasted by thinking of the past or the future. 5. Set some goals but make them realistic – don’t be hard on yourself. 6. Take some exercise as it helps to bring down stress levels. levels 7. Listen to your bo ody. 8. Always remem mber that your most importtant gift is your health an nd to prioritise your health over material possessions, money and ‘one upmanship’
This process happe ens year in year out – so here are some tips to make e February better than usual: 1. Get plenty of re est in between your working days. 2. Remember you can only do one thing att a time, so prioritise taskks by their urgency.

pancakes
RECIPE
PERFECT
MAKE S Ready 8 in 30 min s
Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Simply serve the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice or try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas. YOU WILL NEED: l
100g plain flour
l
Pinch of salt
l
1 large egg
l
l
300ml milk (or milk and water mixed) Sunflower oil or unsalted butter, for frying
METHOD: 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 mins to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand – this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then whisk in a splash of milk. SWEET Choc ‘n’ nuts – spread warmed pancakes with chocolate and hazelnut spread then fold into quarters. Drizzle with warmed chocolate sauce and serve with toasted hazelnuts. Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. 4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter)until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven. SAVOURY Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 mins until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. Fold the pancakes to make parcels and enclose the filling. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Our new exhibition features Ann Ayre Hely, born Ann Ayre Bradshaw, in Ravenstone in 1819. In August 1851 she married the village surgeon, an Irishman called Dr Hely. Three years later he was tragically killed when he accidentally drank poison thinking it was sherry. In March 1855, the now widowed Ann volunteered to go out as a nurse to tend the sick and injured soldiers of the Crimean War. When the war ended in 1856, she returned to England and nursed Florence Nightingale for a while. She went on to work as a housekeeper in some aristocratic households and eventually came to live in Ravenstone Hospital (almshouses) in 1889. Come and find out more about this extraordinary lady. The Museum has received a batch of coloured slides, taken in 2001, of nearly all NW Leicestershire’s non-conformist churches and chapels. These are being digitised and put on our photographic archive. This is only part of an enormous collection now totalling over 3,000 images, both past and present.
We are in the process of finalising our summer programme of town history walks. On Wednesday July 4th at 7 p.m. the walk will be the popular ‘Ashby, the Spa Town’. Details of other walks will be published in the next issue. FRIENDS OF ASHBY MUSEUM Our next talk is by Wendy Freer on Anne Ayre Hely on 14th March. Looking well ahead, on the 9th May, the second annual talk will be on Leicestershire windmills.

SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST
Archivists at work It’s great having thousands of paper and digital documents and photos, but an archive is only useful if everything is filed and catalogued in a way that enables it to be found. Trust volunteers meet fortnightly on Monday evenings to progress the Swannington Archive. There are lots of tasks: Scanning - Our scanning expert works through one tray at a time, sorting documents into date order and deciding what to scan. Sometimes we place large documents on the floor and photograph them. Referencing - One volunteer allocates the reference numbers. Digital copies of multi-page documents are combined into a single file. Cataloguing - Two volunteers enter document details (such as name, description, theme, author, place of origin) in the catalogue. They also file the paper documents in archival quality (acid free) pockets to reduce deterioration over time. Indexing - One very patient volunteer reads documents and painstakingly records every person
48
named in an index. This enables everything about an individual to be traced. Thus a farmer might also appear in chapel, school and village event records. Archive Group members are fascinated by some of the documents relating to the school, chapels, railways and world wars. There are more than 1,250 entries in the catalogue and a long way to go, which is why it would be great if we had a couple more volunteers for this captivating work. For more information about our activities please contact swanningtonresearch@gmail.com or ring 07936 669 276.

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts
Exploring
Charnwood Noon Column
1
W Within the National Forest there are 6 Noon Columns - each is ccarved from English Oak to reflect the character of the landscape in which it sits. Over the next ffew months we will be visiting 6 different areas of the National Forest to take a short stroll around the t site of each of the columns. We start with the Charnwood Noon No Column which is situated within Billa B Barra N Nature Reserve, close to the A511 ithi Bill t at Markfield. I loved the e smooth lines of this Noon Column and the small section of dry stone wall which has been built beside de it. Billa Barra Nature Reserve is a quiet spot with a mix of open grassland, young woodland and a wonderful er old copse of trees on top of the hill. Our loop goes up the hill, where you can explore the rocky ou outcrops, p , before heading down and circling the nature reserve.
2
This short walk takes about 30 minutes. It starts at the small car park off Billa Barra Lane reached by turning off the A511 towards Stanton n Under Bardon (just after Redgate Animal Sanctuary and then first left into Billa Barra Lane). The postcode for Sat Nav users is LE67 9PD. Take the obvious path on the left of the car park which leads past a signboard, down a short sh path, and out to the open hillside where you will see the Noon Column (1). Walk past the column and up the lu hill heading towards a bench on the hillside. As you near the bench bear left and follow lo the grassy path up to a wooden kissing gate (2)) leading into the copse of trees. You need to turn tu immediately left after this gate, but before you do so you may like to spend a few minutes exploring the hilltop (3). o
3
Follow a very narrow path tthat runs downhill beside quite it a steep dip. Pass by a small m wooden gate on your le left o reach a keeping straight on to second gate. Go through this gate into an area of g grassland - you will see a green metal gate on your left. Turn Tu right and d ffollow ll th the path across the grass a as it bears left to reach a gateway leading g out onto the lane. Don’t go through this gateway ew - instead turn right, walk fo or a few yards, then go through a wooden kissing n gaate on your left ft that leads into young woodland. A wide ride takes you through the woodland, slowly o arccing round to the right (you will soon hear/see the A511 off to your left). When you see a wo ooden gate on your rright bear left so that you stay within h the woodlland (don’t go through the gate) - thiss path will take you around to a second narrrower pa d through the gate and turn left to cross gate. Go th bridge (4). After crossing the bridge a wooden w ge urn right tu ht to head back up the hillside on a grassy ra paath, gradually bearing left, to reach anotherr wooden w en kissing gate on the brow of the hill. Go hrough th g this (you can now see the noon column below b w you) and turn left to go through another th gate g e leading onto a wide grassy ride. Follow this ride g back downhill (5). After a straight d section it bends around to the rightt and then ends at a stile after which c emerges behind the grassy bank n at the far right hand end of the e car park.

BEAUTY
Winter S.O.S.
Beauty goodies to see you through the cold spell If your skin is feeling dry and tight at the moment, a sheet mask could be just the ticket. Look for one with hyaluronic acid, which helps skin to hold on to moisture and fight the signs of ageing. The skin689 Bio-Cellulose Hyaluron Face Mask contains hyaluronic acid, along with coconut extract and an amino acid complex to nourish skin. As with all sheet masks, it’s a little fiddly to use, but feels lovely and refreshing when it’s on and the end results are definitely worth it. Softer, more hydrated skin, in just 20 minutes. And at £5.90, it’s an affordable weekend treat. See www.skin689.com. An American skincare brand has released the world’s first vegan, plant-based topical collagen formula. Algenist’s serum is designed to replace lost collagen and contains Omega-rich microalgae oil. As with many things, there’s no long-term gain without short-term pain. In my case this meant that I had to contend with several large pimples breaking out in the first few days of using the serum. However, my skin soon got used to it, and did look plumper, smoother and much more refreshed after just a couple of weeks. All in all, I’m impressed. Genius Liquid Collagen is available from www.SpaceNK. com for £90.
Central heating and icy winds don’t just wreak havoc on your skin - they can also leave your hair feeling dry and lacklustre. Faith in Nature’s Seaweed & Citrus Shampoo and Conditioner include natural extracts, such as wild harvested seaweed to ‘feed’ your hair with minerals and antioxidants. As with all Faith in Nature products, they’re free from parabens and harsh ingredients, so very gentle. Suitable for all hair types, they leave your locks feeling healthier, smoother and shinier. £5.35 each from www.faithinnature.co.uk Sore, cracked hands can be a real pain over the colder months. Unfortunately, some hand creams can actually make the situation worse, particularly if they contain artificial perfumes. Dermalex is a specialist skincare range aimed at sufferers of conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. The Hand Irritation Cream can help with dry, cracked skin, itching and other signs of irritation. You’ll also want to look for a gentler hand wash or soap that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulphate, which can dry your skin and aggravate skin conditions. From £12.99, www.dermalex.co.uk. It may be cold outside, but it won’t be long before it’s time to pack the winter woollies away for a few months. If you’ve been neglecting your nails under warm gloves, now’s the time to treat them to some TLC. Nails Inc Superfood NailKale Base Coat is enriched with kale, aloe vera, lemon, ginseng, pomegranate and grape extracts to nourish and strengthen your nails. Use it on its own for a glossy nude finish, or as a base coat for your favourite coloured polish. £15, www.nailsinc.com.

BOOK REVIEWS
Hidden
gems
We usually focus on new releases for our book reviews, but this time we’ve scoured the back catalogues for a few gems you might have missed. Station Eleven Emily St. John Mandel
Harry Potter series JK Rowling, illustrated by Jim Kay
From Kirsten – child actor turned travelling thespian – to aspiring doctor Jeevan, the novel tells the individual stories of several people before, during and after a pandemic that wipes out most of the population. Gripping, beautiful and all too plausible, Station Eleven is a must for fans of Margaret Atwood, Erin Morgenstern and Suzanne Collins.
There can’t be many people who haven’t heard of the boy wizard by now. If you’re a fan, you might want to consider upgrading your paperbacks for the hardbacks illustrated by Jim Kay. Kay’s illustrations are superb and incredibly detailed. Prefer e-readers? Check out the Kindle in Motion editions, which animate parts of the illustrations, so you can watch Harry fly through the air in hot pursuit of the golden snitch while you’re reading.
The Crow Road Iain Banks The Crow Road covers some pretty big themes – love, death, religion, drugs and fractured families being just a few of them. Prentice McHoan returns home for his grandmother’s funeral and soon gets drawn into trying to solve the mystery of his Uncle Rory’s disappearance. It’s a dark, intense novel and far from an easy read, but the wit and sheer beauty of the writing could well make it one of your all-time favourites. Why Mummy Drinks Gill Sims Gill Sims is the author of a hugely successful Facebook blog – Peter and Jane’s Mummy. Why Mummy Drinks was released last autumn and quickly became a bestseller. Written in diary format, it tells the story of Ellen, a 39 year old mum of two, who’s trying to balance work and children, while navigating playground politics, irritating in-laws and an ex-boyfriend. The ensuing drama is extremely funny and very relatable if you’re a parent who isn’t quite ready to hang up her dancing shoes.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles Agatha Christie If last year’s hit film Murder on the Orient Express has tempted you to dip into the works of Agatha Christie, why not start with her very first novel? Published in 1920 and set during World War I, it introduces readers to the brilliant mind of Belgian refugee Hercule Poirot. The murder of a woman has everyone pointing the finger at one man. It’s down to Poirot to find out the real culprit before it’s too late. While The Mysterious Affair at Styles is not considered Christie’s finest work, there are still plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked. Cuckoo Song Frances Hardinge Cuckoo Song was first published in 2014, the year before Frances Hardinge’s Costa Award-winning novel The Lie Tree. Eleven year old Triss wakes up from an accident to find things aren’t as they were. She can’t satisfy her immense hunger for a start; her sister is terrified of her; and even her dolls have turned against her. Is she going mad, or is the truth even more terrifying? A thoroughly enjoyable, fantastical read, Cuckoo Song is sure to prove a hit with fans of Neil Gaiman and Angela Carter.
