YOUR WELLBEING
Loneliness Does Not Discriminate … … it can affect anyone. Here are a few things that you can do to help yourself:
Carve Time for Yourself: Sometimes, people get lonely if they are overworked for a prolonged period of time or take on more than they can handle. This can leave little time to build and maintain meaningful social relationships. If you are at ease and not hurried, you may be more likely to want to talk to others and to develop connections. Refrain from Comparing: A large number of people frequently compare themselves or their lives unfavorably with others. This can only hurt you. Your life is uniquely your own. It is a journey. Do not compare your journey with others. Interact with family/friends: Make it a point to have some meaningful conversations with loved ones/ friends as often as possible. Many people nowadays end up prioritizing other activities in life at the cost of real social connections. Even one good relationship

can make a marked difference.
Each of these steps is progress and an accomplishment in itself. Creating time to pause and reflect helps you to have a better relationship with yourself as well as with others. If you do not have family members around and are having difficulty initiating or maintaining friendships, seek professional help from a counsellor. This can unearth what’s causing or perpetuating this difficulty, and will help you find specific ways to overcome it. Please contact Andrea Headington (Dip Couns,MBACp) to make an appointment on 07749 921431 or email Pathfindingtherapy.co.uk. Sessions available at ProPhysio in Ashby.

LEGAL TIPS
Protecting your family’s inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires
care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property. Westminster Law can assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Sunday 15th July at Cattows Farm, Heather The Imps Motorcycle Display Team are the main attraction at this year’s Ashby Show. They will have you mesmerised by an unmissable display of discipline and skill. From billowing fire jumps to multiple motorcycle combination “cross-over” routines. With livestock show classes for some of the best cattle, sheep and horses in the country, this traditional agricultural show links town and country. You can sample the region’s best food in the popular British Farm Produce marquee, see how farming has progressed through the years with the brilliant display of old vintage tractors and marvel at the massive machines used in farming today. The Greyfriars Accumulator Show Jumping class will again bring the country’s best show jumpers along to compete for the £500 top prize. Competitors will race against the clock building up points for each jump they clear. If shopping is more your thing, then this is the place for you with over 200 trade exhibitors selling everything from the latest fashions, handbags, jewellery or something for the garden. Children will be entertained throughout the day by Punch & Judy, Stilt Walkers, Bouncy Castles and Go Carts. New this year is Farmageddon – an interactive laser experience. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads. Enter them in a class or two in the Fun Dog Show and perhaps go home with a rosette. There are plenty of tasty food outlets

Heather Scarecrow Festival al
celebrates its 20th Anniversaryy The hugely popular Heather Scarecrow Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and the villagers plan to make it extra special. It will take place from 11am on Sunday 29th July until 6pm on Sunday 5th August. There will be ample free parking at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ) and Heather Village Hall (LE67 2RE). Admission is free and guides are available for £2 to help visitors find all the Scarecrows and vote for their favourite. This year the festival has the use of David Taylor Memorial Hall from Sunday 29th July until Friday 3rd August and has invited local groups and charities to make use of the hall for a day to raise funds for their organisation whilst also selling Scarecrow guides. This means there will be additional parking and toilet facilities for visitors. Details of the activities taking place at the hall each day will be shown in the Festival Guide and announced on the Facebook Page. To mark the 20th Anniversary and to acknowledge the lady who established Heather Scarecrow Festival, organisers are introducing The Di Everett Award this year. This is in the form of an optional theme, the winner of which will receive this special award and an additional prize of £50. The theme is ‘Night at the Movies’. The winner of the theme will be selected by an independent judge. Be sure to pop in to the church during the festival. You will be blown away by the yarn bombing! Village residents have been working on this for months.

Refreshments will be served in the Church on Saturday 4th August and they will be holding a Summer Fete on Sunday 5th August. Other features this year include displays of ng Heather’s photograph’s showing Heather s past provided by Ibstock Historical Society and a display of Coalville’s Famous 50 at the Football Club. Also, be prepared for possible special surprise visitors during the final weekend. Let’s not forget the main aim of the event is to help raise funds for local village groups, whilst providing an affordable day out for families. It would be difficult to achieve both these aims without the generous sponsorship of several local businesses helping to cover some of the costs. Sponsors include Rebound Ashby who have offered vouchers to scarecrow creators as an additional incentive and have also provided money off vouchers in the Scarecrow Guide. The School’s, Preschools and Day Nursery’s competition is sponsored by Kimble’s Music and Movement. HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
Improve your Health and Fitness and raise money for LOROS
Everyone who lives in Leicestershire knows someone who has been touched by the overwhelming help and support LOROS give. Both my mum and dad had fantastic care & support from LOROS when they were diagnosed with cancer. The care they received was outstanding. The staff, from consultants, nurses, to housekeeping, and kitchen were all fabulous. Although my mum never stayed on the ward, she was able to have outpatient appointments there, and when she was too ill to attend her appointment, a LOROS consultant did a home visit instead. Dad was lucky enough to have a few stays in LOROS. He even commented that it was like a 5 star hotel, especially as he could have his favourite tipple of whiskey with his lunch and at night! Plus I am sure one evening he had about 5 hot dogs!. I am so grateful to LOROS that I have been motivated, together with my gym clients, to raise over £53,000 in the years since my parents passed. We have all been able to improve our health and

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts
Needwood and South Derbyshire Clayla and ds
N Column C Noon
1
TThe last of our six Noon Colum mns iss situated at Jacksons Bank, part of the ancient Needwood p FForest and right on the outer rreaches of the National Forest. TThe walk is an easy hours stroll but you might like to complete your outing by making use of the large, and rather lovely, picnic area at the entrance to the woodland. This beautiful Noon Column is the most rugged of the six si - being carved to capture the essence of the many mature trees within this landscape. Indeed it does oe it so well that at a glimpse one might pass by as it blends into the setting of the l forest. Stop to take a closer look and you’ll see how l cleverly it has been crafted. The walk starts from the car park rk at the entrance to Jackson’s Bank which is accessed d via Brackenhurst Road, just off the A515 and close to Hoar Cross. The postcode for sat nav users is DE13 8RG.
Walk straight ahead down the main n track ignoring any small paths that lead off into the woodland. After a while hile yyou will ill arrive at a fork in the track - bear left. Your path drops p downhill and, shortly after it starts to level e out, you need to bear left onto a narrow path going oin through a gap in the hedgerow (2) to come out ut beside a small building. Here you join the end of the he access road for a dwelling on your right. Follow this access road down to a ford with a footbridge on either h side (3). Take either of the bridges across the stream onto the
3
lane on the far side. Turn right h and walk along the lane for or about 200 yards until you u see a wooden footpath arrow leading g off to your right. Follow this hi arrow through a small wooden gate and over another bridge, taking you back c across the same stream and into a field. ld
When I went this field el had been recently grazed and was deeply e rutted where the cattle had been - expect it to be muddy after wet weather. The path h goes through the gateway immediately ahead of you and then continues straight up the field. e Once you get to the far end of th he field you willl find the next footpath marker, telling yo ou that you are now on the Kissing Gate walk. Go o thrrough the small ma gate next to the marker, back into t the woodland. On n your left yyou will see a pon nd (4) - bear left to reaacch it and tth hen bear right so that you are walking aro ound the right bank to the far end where water e flo ows in. At A this point turn right and go up a wide set of steps set into the slope.
2
Leave the car park via a small wooden gate by the metal barrier leading onto a wide track into the forest. On your right is the picnic area, the noon column is on your left (1).
op of the steps is a junction of paths - turn u Att the top le g eft and walk a short way up towards a metal gate att the woodland w edge. Just before reaching the h gate g there h is a narrow track leading off to your right in nto the woodland (5). Take this track and follow lo itt as it meanders along, always fairly close to the th edge e of the woodland, with fields fi ld visible vi through the trees on your u left. Once you start to glimpse the picnic area ahead of you bear b right and drop down to rejoin in the main forest track from the e start of your walk. Turn left on this is track to pass back by the Noon Column and return to the car park.

IN YOUR GARDEN
The Laburnum Tree Laburnum trees are known for their yellow racemes which are like yellow pearls dripping from the branches. Looking towards a Laburnum tree in flower is similar to being transported to a summer holiday and a block of sunshine. An excellent variety of this tree for growing in gardens is the Laburnum x watereri Vossi. This was bred in Holland in the early 19th century and has an Award of Garden Merit. This reliable tree thrives in gardens all over the UK as it survives in most soils and is generally trouble free. Note though that it does not grow in waterlogged soil. Laburnum grows best in the sun but will still grow in partial shade too. Laburnums are very hardy, even down to about minus 20 degrees centigrade. Generally no feeding is required but they may need watering in times of severe drought.

Laburnum is versatile and can be grown to bend over a pergola, arch or structure. Such training will make a beautiful living frame or, even a grand entrance. By tying in young trees along the length of a pergola, a marvellous yellow tunnel is created in late spring when the tree is in flower. For the remaining time a welcome shady walk way is made. Famously there is such a tunnel at Barnsley House in Gloucestershire, which has appeared in many a garden calendar and garden book. This Laburnum tunnel is stunningly under planted with purple Alliums, which contrast vibrantly with the yellow flowers of the Laburnum. I must point out though that the entire Laburnum tree is poisonous. It was featured as a method of poisoning in a Mid Summer Murders episode once. Truly every bit of this tree is poisonous, including the bark, seeds, leaves, flowers and roots, so take care where you plant it. Lastly do not plant near ponds because the leaves and seeds will fall in the water and poison the fish. To make a purchase of a Laburnum tree, then choosing a young tree whilst it is still a whip will be the least expensive option. Whips are good for training early over a pergola or archway too. They are also available in pots or containers. I would suggest planting a Laburnum at least 12 meters from the house to protect your foundations. When planting this tree add some fish, blood and bone to get the tree off to a good start.
Happy gardening!

TECHNOLOGY TIPS
Online
Gaming Saf afety
Over the years, gaming on both PC and conssole has changed. What was once a safe closed system where you could simply load a game and get playing solo, has now developed massively into online based activity. As such, it’s the responsibility of both parents and children to ensure that they stay safe online and have fun with gameplay at the same time. Whilst gaming is meant to be fun, its also a risky place to be for a few reasons: • There are varying ages of players, so not everyone will necessarily be nice and can often resort to bullying and upsetting other players.
suitable for younger ages. Be mindful m of online chatt consoles, con such as TeamSpeak, Mumble, ble, Skype and Discord – only join those who you know, and d wit with reputation. Also, be cautious of chat sessions within in str streaming sites like Twitch and YouTube Gaming. Never share re personal information online with people you don’t know - keep yourself safe. For parents, also check that your children cannot make transactional payments for rewards/paid content within games. Nothing worse than not noticing that your child has ran up a bill for you!
• Some games have upsetting content such as violence, horror or adult content – this can be more realistic with Virtual Reality based gameplay. • Online chat can also result in exchanges of relationship and friendship building, which in many cases is fine, but has also been used as a form of online grooming – there have been reports of this in popular games such as Fortnite. So, what can you do to stay safe? Tell a trusted adult if something upsets you and learn how to block/mute/report other players should this start happening in a game. Don’t get upset if you lose a game, it happens, as getting angry with other players or speaking out of line can often make situations worse. Check the game ratings, they often give a good indication whether the game is

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS Statistics
In May our receptionists at Ibstock answered 5,277 telephone calls. Our Barlestone receptionists answered 896. As you might expect, we get more calls in the hour from 8.15am to 9.15am than during any other time of the day. And the last hour, from 5pm to 6pm at Ibstock and from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at Barlestone is usually the quietest and so often the best time to ring for non-urgent enquiries.

PET’S CORNER
Keeping your dog safe in the water this summer Swimming is a fun activity for your dog, and one which can be extremely beneficial for their overall health. In the heat of summer, however, it comes into its own by cooling them down and helping them to avoid the risk of heat stroke to which dogs are prone. So what should you do to make sure they’re safe in the water, and that swimming is fun rather than frightening? Stay in the shallows at first Letting your dog play in shallow waters helps them to acclimatise and gain confidence iff they’re relatively new to swimming.
stomach due to the bacteria and parasites that are often present, so it’s a good idea to take some fresh drinking water with you. Don’t let them get too tired Swimming is tiring for your dog, so watch out for signs that they’re flagging. They may start to panic and flounder in the water, especially if they’re novice swimmers. It’s possible to buy life jackets for dogs, which give them confidence in the water if they’re a little unsure.
Be aware of undercurrents It’s easy for your dog to be swept out further than you’d like if there are tidal undercurrents on n your stretch of beach. Fast-flowing rivers and strreams also pose a danger in this respect, even if your dog’s a strong swimmer. Provide fresh water to drink Drinking lake or river water can result in an n upset

FILM NIGHT
JOURNEY’S END (R) FRIDAY 20TH JULY Doors and licensed bar open at 7.00pm Film Starts at 7.30pm Tickets: £5.00/£4.00 Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918; it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, as they await their fate. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, this is an unassumingly excellent new film version of RC Sherriff’s classic 1928 stage play, adapted by Simon Reade and directed by Saul Dibb. It is expertly cast and well acted: forthright, powerful and heartfelt. The dramatic action is opened out, whilst always conveying the essential, cramped claustrophobia of this tragic ordeal.
Enjoy a drink from the bar whilst watching a great film in this unique venue; one of the oldest surviving purpose-built cinemas in the country.
TEA AT THE RITZ
SUNDAY 8TH JULY
From 3-5pm. A charity fund-raising event for Supporting Confidence Through Exercise. Including afternoon tea, sandwiches and cakes plus entertainment with a ‘Mixed Bag’ of singing songs from the West End and Opera – from County to Soul music, a little of something for everyone. Tickets £7.50. Contact Lynne on 07415 678275.

BOOK REVIEWS
Holiday Reads
Sun-lounger worthy reads to keep you occupied this summer. Salvage the Bones Jesmyn Ward With so many new releases each year, it’s all too easy for books to get buried in the sands of time. Salvage the Bones deserves to be unburied. 15-year-old Esch lives with her three brothers, her alcoholic father and the memory of her mother in a crumbling shack in Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina is on the way and the family is woefully unprepared. If you’re a fan of Alice Walker or Harper Lee, and love getting lost in a devastatingly beautiful read, this one is for you. I Still Dream James Smythe It’s 1997. In between making mix-tapes and arguing with her mum, Laura Bow finds time to create a computer programme. She calls it Organon. At first, Organon is just something to tell her thoughts and feelings to – an online journal that talks back. But as the years pass, it becomes clear that Laura has created an AI with more potential than she could ever have imagined. A gripping read. Wishes Under the Willow Tree Phaedra Patrick Benedict Stone is a jeweller in a quiet country village, as was his father before him. Benedict’s marriage is going through a rocky patch, so the last thing he needs is a teenage niece he’s never met turning up on his doorstep. Together, the unlikely duo work to win Benedict’s wife back. Wishes Under the Willow Tree is an enjoyable, easy read, and as added bonus, you’ll learn a little about gem stones along the way.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart Holly Ringland Alice spends her days hiding from her father and helping her bruised, fragile mother tend to the garden. She’s kept away from school, family and the local village. But then one day tragedy strikes and Alice’s world starts to open up. Can she put her demons aside, or is she destined to repeat her parents’ mistakes? A perfect summer read, although you may find it a struggle to tear yourself away. The Family Next Door Sally Hepworth Pleasant Court is a nice neighbourhood, full of respectable families. People don’t talk about their problems. So when Isabelle Heatherington, single and attractive, moves in, she ruffles more than a few feathers. The secrets people have tried so hard to bury start coming out, as Isabelle seems to know rather a lot about her new neighbours. An enjoyable domestic drama, with a few twists and turns to keep you sitting by the pool until the sun goes down. How I Lose You Kate McNaughton How I Lose You is a love story, told backwards. Eva’s husband Adam dies in chapter one. As Eva struggles to come to terms with her loss, we learn about their story in a series of flashbacks. Back in the present day, Eva stumbles across an email in Adam’s inbox that suggests he was hiding something. In her search to uncover his secret, Eva discovers shocking truths about herself.
