SPOTLIGHT ON... Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity or community group and share details of who they are, how they help local people and any fundraising events they have coming up. This month Leonard Cheshire Disability is our chosen charity. Leonard Cheshire Disability is a charity supporting disabled people to fulfil their potential and live the lives they choose. Her Majesty The Queen has been patron of Leonard Cheshire Disability since 1980 and 2017 marked 100 years since the birth of their founder, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire. Newlands House in Netherseal is a local care home, run by the charity, and provides support to residents as well as a day service for people in the community. On Saturday 9th June their annual summer fete will be held in the beautiful parkland grounds at Newlands House (DE12 8DA). A particular highlight of the day is the Royal Air Force Flypast, in honour of their founder, Group Captain Lord Cheshire. There are also many attractions including a Fun Dog Show, Jolly Jingles, Punch and Judy, live music, craft stalls, an outdoor cafe with BBQ and lots more for all the family to enjoy.

Working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle on the fete, Leonard Cheshire Disability hope to raise enough funds to continue making a real difference to local people’s lives. IBSTOCK & BARLESTONE SURGERIES Minibus for Patients
Just a reminder that we run a minibus twice a week for patients on Tuesday and Friday mornings. This minibus is for patients who have no other way to get to the surgery. Our driver will pick you up from home and drop you back after your appointment. There is no cost for this service but we kindly request that you only ask to use it if you have a genuine need. If you would like more details or to book please enquire at Ibstock reception.
Hay Fever Medications
Hay fever season is here again and as part of a campaign to use NHS resources wisely, we have been asked by our local Clinical Commissioning Group, to ask patients to purchase hay fever medications rather than asking for them on prescription. They can generally be purchased cheaply in local pharmacies and supermarkets and are often much less than the cost of a prescription. We think asking people to self-care is a fair way of utilising resources and will help to free up
valuable GP and nurse time, which can be used to deal with patients with more complex or serious health needs. However, if you are worried or your symptoms get worse or persist you can still make an appointment to see your GP.
Nursing changes
We’re sorry to say that nurse Sandra is leaving us and we wish her all the best in her new position. We have been fortunate to recruit two new nurses to replace her. Nurse Karen will be working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Nurse Kath will be working on Fridays. I’m sure patients will welcome both these ladies to our team.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Like everyone else, the Museum volunteers were very sorry to hear of the death of Gillian Petzan. She was a good friend to the Museum and she left us some items, including the famous Santa Claus post box, which we will put on display this Christmas. We have also taken some photographs of the inside of the toy shop (Bobby White’s), which will be on our website before too long. There have been really positive reviews of Julie Barnett’s art work in the Loudoun Gallery. The exhibition comes to an end at the beginning of June, to be followed by a two month display on local archaeology. This is part of the National Archaeology Fortnight held in July.
16
Places on our two town history walks are steadily being filled. There is still room for a few more so if you would like to spend an enjoyable evening finding out about Ashby’s rich history do get in touch, either by calling in to the Museum or calling on 01530 560 090 to book a place. On Wednesday July 4th, Ken Hillier leads a Spa Town walk focussing on the development of the Ivanhoe Baths and the Hastings Hotel – later to be renamed the Royal Hotel. Then, on Wednesday August 8th, Robert Jones will lead a general town history walk. Both walks start at the Museum at 7pm and cost £4.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Palm trees
Having had a splash of summer weather I shall continue my series about trees by discussing some tropical looking options. Some ‘Palm’ trees such as, Trachycarpus fortunei, the Cabbage Palm also known as the Torbay Palm, it has large fan shaped dark green leaves and is hardy. It has the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a wonderful structural plant, great for creating a tropical holiday feel in a garden. This particular tree originates from China and survives up to minus 12 degrees and will stand a windy coastal location, but not cold northerly winds. Trachycarpus fortunei is not actually a Palm even though it looks like it is. Readily available, you can buy on line or through specialist nurseries such as bigplantnursery.co.uk. Similarly Trithinax campestris is also hardy and is grown throughout the UK and will give a ‘tropical’ feel to a planting scheme and is useful as it will also put up with a heavy soil which we tend to have locally. For a ‘moveable’ tropical scene try Chamaerops humilis (Dwarf Mediterranean fan palm) in a nice pot. This striking specimen tolerates some shade,

ad so is useful if you do not have a south facing spot but still want to give the impression of a hot climate. It has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and is hardy. Alternatively Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm) is very elegant and also has the AGM and will be OK in a pot for a couple of years. The latter is not fully hardy but if it is in a pot, can be moved around to a sheltered position in winter months and be given added protection from the cold. Free draining soil (not our local clay) is generally necessary for a Palm’s success. If you do plant into clay soil then work in a lot of compost, grit and sand to help with drainage and prevent the roots sitting in water during the winter. The Palms generally should be placed in full sun and will need watering while the roots establish and until the new leaves grow, but then are generally drought tolerant. To tidy the plant and keep it neat, cut off dead foliage in spring. To protect the non hardy plants in winter you should tie the palm leaves together to protect the crown of the plant. For most Palms the growth comes from the crown which is why it is important to protect this area from cold winter temperatures, wet and snow. In addition the crown can be packed with straw and a fleece tied around the whole plant.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS
Ashby-based ‘The Flooring And Bed Company – Fabco’ gets a Twitter Boost from Theo Paphitis An Ashby De La Zouch‐based firm has received
a business boost from Retail Entrepreneur Theo Paphitis. Last week, Fabco tweeted Theo about their business during ‘Small Business Sunday’ and was one of six weekly winners to gain a retweet by Theo to his 500,000 Twitter followers. The weekly initiative, set up by Theo in 2010, now has over 2200 #SBS winners and supports small businesses in the UK. Business and retail entrepreneur, Theo retweeted Fabco’s message to his almost 500,000 followers and as a result, @Flooringandbed has 100’s more followers and extra orders for their home interior and furnishing products, and they only won this recognition 2 days ago!! Tony & Ed of Fabco said, “We’ve only been in business 3 1/2 years and have received fabulous support from the local people of Ashby and the surrounding villages. It’s great to have support from Theo because it’s been tough trying to raise our profile and Theo has recognised our

HEARTWOOD COMMUNITY WOODFUEL GROUP
Heartwood in the Heart of the National Forest We are very lucky to live here in the heart of the National Forest and we can enjoy it because of volunteer groups such as Heartwood Community Woodfuel Group who work tirelessly to maintain the woodlands in partnership with the National Forest itself. The group was created in March 2015 as part of the Black to Green Project and has now grown into a 90 strong team of volunteers. The 2017/18 felling season saw Heartwood plan and lead the entire winter programme of felling within three woodlands – Willesley Wood, Donisthorpe Woodland Park & Sarah’s Wood. Heartwood members work on a “logs for labour” basis, felling and processing the thinnings and taking a boot-full of logs home for their efforts. The strategic direction of the group is aligned to that of the National Forest, to bring more and more of the woodlands into management using volunteer resource. A five-year plan is also being negotiated
28
with the Woodland Trust to secure management of a number of woodlands within the National Forest owned by the trust. All of this will mean significant growth for the group over the coming years, giving opportunities for volunteers to spend more and more productive time in the woods, fuelling their log burners and their souls with all the good things being in the woods means to us. If you are interested in the group please visit their webpage www.heartwoodhof.org.uk or contact them on chairman@heartwoodhof.org.uk

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts
Leicestershire and d South Noon Column Derbyshire y 1
TThis Noon Column is situated vvery much in the heart of the N National Forest at Sence Valley FForest Park. It is easy to spot, being b sited right alongside tthe car park as you enter the park. The dark colours of both the column and the surround perfectly reflect the huge influence that mining has had on this area. It is a wonderful way to contrast the past with the present and d show what a difference planting the National Forest has made - walkers leaving the column can choose between tw exploring the lakes and streams of Sence Valley, le or taking the National Forest Way across the fields to t either Kelham Bridge Nature Reserve or The Diamond on Jubilee Wood. Our walk follows part a of the National n Forest Way before turning back across farmland to enter e Sence Valley. We then meander around the lakes and back to the Noon Column. Allow a little over an hour for your walk.
2
The walk starts from the main (top) car park at Sence Valley Forest Park - this is accessed from the A447 between Ravenstone and Ibstock (look out for the green sign on the main road just outside Ibstock). For Sat Nav users the nearest postcode is LE67 6NW. You will see the Noon Column on your right i h as you enter the car park. Head back towards the car park entrance/exit, passing by the Noon Column (1) on your left - you u will see a narrow hard path that runs alongside the access road. Take this path and follow it as itt bends round to b the left just before reaching the main n road. The path runs through the trees parallel to the th road for a short way before reaching a wooden ba barrier leading onto a bridleway. You have now reached h the National Forest Way. Turn left and follow the bridleway b downhill, remaining on it to go
3
down through the dip and cross over a pretty stre eam e (2) that feeds into the lakes e off SSence Valley. Shortly after crossing ov over the stream, as you start back uphill, there is a footpath sign leading off to the e left. Follow this sign over a stile and around a field edge. The path kinks left after a little e while to cross another stile - taking you back ac into Sence Valley Forest Park. After crossing the stile turn right and walk for about 20 yardss b before taking a path on your left that runs through the trees (3) giving glimpses of Stonebridge Lake e off to your left. You will soon come m to o a fork in the pa path - the left hand fork leads off to the birrd hide (you might want to take a minute to see what w you u can spot out u on the water) - to continue your wallk you need tto take the right hand fork. The path th now w twists a little t before crossing an atttractive arched h bri brid dge and th then meetting a wide, hard path. Tu urn left along the hard path to arrive at a T Junction ct with Horseshoe e Lake straight ahead of you. Turn rig ght and walk around with the lake on your leftt haand side e until you come to a stone bridge (4). Im mmediately a after crossing the bridge turn left to ontinue around the opposite side of Horseshoe co o Ignore a fork off to your right, which leads LLake. Ig d up the hill, ll and keep on around the lake until you pass shelter. a wooden o SStraightt after the shelter turn right onto n a narrow path which twists back b and forwards leading you steeply uphill (5) - there are a couple pl of handy benches on the way iif you need a rest. At the top of th this path go past the wooden barriers ar and bear left to come back into the far end of the car park.
All walks are checked before publication but please be awaare that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
You can lose
weight at any time in your life
I first met Colin last January, he was approaching 70 and determined to lose weight and improve his quality of life and health. He was considering this for many months and was motivated by the fact it was January and time for change. All Colin needed was the right help and guidance to achieve this, we started steadily and very quickly Colin started to feel better for his gym fitness classes and weight loss guidance. To keep his momentum going between sessions Colin decided to buy an exercise bike to use at home along with walking the dogs. Four months later Colin has lost an amazing four stones and has inspired his wife, Jane, to join him in the gym and lose in excess of two stones. Colin’s fitness has improved massively, there is nothing in the gym that he struggles with, his mobility, balance, strength and co ordination have greatly improved. It is extremely rewarding and inspiring to see someone improving their health and fitness as much as Colin has.
Colin says .. “I was tired of falling asleep in the afternoons, hips aching after short walks and an aching back after standing up for a while. Now I don’t have these problems and I was taking three tablets for high blood pressure - now only two tablets and one of these halved in strength yet my blood pressure is now fine. All weight loss done with exercise and a sensible diet plus no alcohol or snacks plus Mark’s advice and encouragement’’..... Mark Padgett www.mppersonaltraining.co.uk

PET’S CORNER
Helping Your Dog Dea eal with the Heat of Summer Heat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat throug gh their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is often fatal.
• Your dog has ready access to shade, and plenty of cool drinking water. • You don’t over-exercise them, or take your dog out during the hottest part of the day.
So how do you prevent heat stroke, what are e the symptoms, and what can you do to help? Is your dog suffering from heat stroke? Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include: • Rapid breathing • Heavy panting • Lethargy • Agitation or disorientation • Drooling • Vomiting and/or diarrhoea • Fitting/seizures
What to do if you suspect your dog has heat stroke You need to cool your dog down, but without making them too cold once the panting has stopped. Seek help from a vet as a matter of urgency, even if you’re not sure whether they’re in danger. Organ failure can occur over a longer period of time, and fast action can save their life even if you think everything is fine.
Preventing a disaster Being aware that your dog is very susceptible g to heat stroke is a major factor in preventing it. You should make sure that: m • They aren’t locked inside the car on a warm day.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS
Safety and Scammers
There are several nasty ways that scammers can get hold of your private information, especially on social networking sites. Here PC Clinic outline three key Facebook safety issues that we want you to be aware of, and how to avoid getting caught out: 1. For those not in the know, like-farming is the process where spammers post exploitative and deceptive posts to help their pages accumulate followers. These followers can then be exposed to spam, online scams or the Facebook pages can be sold to untrustworthy marketing companies. Typical scenarios include “like for this”, “share for that” etc - typical ones you often see are a batch of unopened gadgets being given away for free, all you need to do is like the post…. too good to be true isn’t it? 2. Having a public Friends list is a default setting on Facebook and really needs changing to prevent scammers viewing your friends. It’s quite simple in theory, a scammer clones your account and sends out requests, and a friend request is accepted. The scammer can attempt to initialise any number of different scams on your friend, which could very well be successful
as they would think the new profile is you. It’s called Facebook cloning, and certainly one to avoid – so let’s minimise it happening. Easy to fix by opening your Facebook Profile, click on Friends, and click the pencil icon (top right). You can then change your privacy settings accordingly. 3. If you receive an image file sent by someone, even your friend, on your Facebook Messenger or any other social media platform, just DO NOT CLICK ON IT. There have been many reports of simple JPG files being embedded with nasty viruses which can in turn infect your computer. The most recent one being the infamous Locky Ransomware virus, and you really do not want to get this on your computer. For any further help and advice, pop in to your local computer and laptop centre, PC Clinic in Huntingdon Court. Fully endorsed by Which? Lazy Days Wish List
Planning to stock up on books for lazy days in the sun? Add these to your wish list… The Trick to Time Kit de Waal Mona leads a quiet life in a seaside town – making her dolls, visiting the carpenter and helping grieving mothers. But how did she get here? What happened to the spirited young woman who set out seeking adventure, and the man she fell in love with? A beautiful read with engaging characters that covers issues as diverse as grief, immigration, mental illness and love.
The Possible World Liese O’Halloran Schwarz After his mother is killed, six year old Ben tells people that his real name is Leo, and that he has another mother. But no one believes him. Doctor Lucy is struggling to come to terms with her marriage breakup when she first meets the little boy. Clare is approaching her 100th birthday and decides to tell someone the story of her life before it’s too late. Three separate characters, whose stories (past, present or future) are interlinked. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Finding Gobi Dion Leonard This is the story of ultramarathon runner Dion Leonard and the small stray dog that joined him on his 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert. Dion becomes determined to offer the dog a home, but there’s an awful lot of red tape to get through, and then the dog disappears. This Sunday Times bestseller has also been rewritten as a picture book and as a young readers’ book, so do make sure you order the right version!
Modern Women: 52 Pioneers Kira Cochrane Modern Women is a celebration of some of the women who have shaped society and changed lives. Women such as Tegla Loroupe, who grew up with 24 siblings and halfsiblings in Kenya, went on to win numerous marathons, and now runs a sports training programme for refugees. Activists, athletes, filmmakers and even a circus strongwoman make up the 52. You’ll read about well-known women as well as women who have been all but forgotten. In each case Cochrane has managed to unearth something new and inspiring. A fascinating read you’ll want to dip into time and time again.
Now You See Her Heidi Perks Charlotte only took her eyes off the little girl for a few minutes but when she doesn’t turn up, Charlotte is ostracised by the community and blamed by the media. And, of course, the little girl’s mother is never going to forgive her. But then the two women come under police investigation and something isn’t quite as it seems. A tension-filled thriller, with plenty of twists and turns.

All Things Bright and Strange James Markert In the wake of WWI, Ellsworth Newberry is grieving for his wife and just wants to be left alone. Part Christian fiction, part horror, part historical fiction, All Things Bright and Strange starts strongly, but gets lost a little bit along the way.
