SPOTLIGHT ON...

You’ve got a friend Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity or community group and share more details of how they support local residents and how they make a difference. You’ve Got A Friend Leicestershire recently celebrated their first birthday. The project was kick-started by a group of like-minded musical friends who gathered together in April 2017 to promote mental health awareness in North West Leicestershire. Their achievements in their first twelve months have been impressive and they are moving forward into their second year with even more enthusiasm and passion. The project has one specific aim; to raise awareness of mental health issues and to create a space to talk about it. Mental Health Difficulties can affect anyone at any time. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people have experienced a mental health problem at some time (mind.org.uk), and 1 in 6 people in the last week have experienced a common mental health problem (mentalhealth.org.uk). Many of us have been affected either by personal difficulties or by supporting a friend or family member. YGAF want to encourage our community to talk to and support each other. They also want to reduce the stigma and isolation that surrounds mental health problems. They aim to raise awareness of mental health issues and to communicate through music and music events in the area having even recorded and released their own track. Ray Whitmore, one of the core team who worked to get the project off the ground recently reflected on their first year; “In the last twelve months, You’ve Got A

10

Friend has already started to make an impact in our community. After we released the track, the website launched attracting interest across the board from mental health organisations, groups and services and helped by the support of the local press. Monthly podcasts are now available exploring real life experiences via the great work that Deborah is doing. We have launched the Mancave sessions, with Richard at the heart of capturing all the musicians signing up to show their support. We held our first public event to mark World Suicide Day with Karen successfully integrating us with established organisations and speakers. We have also successfully partnered with Hermitage FM to provide monthly social events, again supported by amazing local artists. But most of all, people are starting to talk about their own mental health! And that is the whole purrpose of why we started. Nobody should ever feell alone. We have much more to do and some veryy exciting things are on the horizon as we enter the second year of YGAF. “ You u can find out more about You’ve Got A Friend and d their upcoming events and download their track at www.ygafleicestershire.co.uk or follow them on Facebook (YGAFLeicestershire). The group have monthly social meetings at Hermitage FM Café on the second Wednesday of each month from 7.30 to 9.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

Be Driven and Motivated by Setting Goals Thinking of the benefits of exercise such as weight loss, toning, a more positive outlook etc can really make us feel like taking up exercise...it is a great motivator. So, once you are motivated you can achieve great things which lead on to greater success and a better quality life!

to help you achieve it and when you want to achieve it by. Write it all down, set a deadline, monitor your prog gress on the way and achieve your goal........this really does work, you just have to tune in and focus.

If you are not happy with your health, lifestyle or weight use it as a ‘fuel’ to motivate you to achieve a healthy and balanced lifestyle. .

It really is your personal choice…stay as you are and d be unhappy or take action and make it happen.

This is where goal setting comes in to the equation. Take some time out to reflect on what you want and then start to think about how you are going to achieve it, what time and resources you have in order

Be motivated, set goals and feel the power!

IN YOUR GARDEN

Magnificent Magnolias

The name Magnolia comes from a famous French botanist called Pierre Magnol (1638 to 1715). Magnolia is a genus which is ancient, as proven by fossilised specimens which date back 20 million years.

Today Magnolias are a very popular tree and there is an International Magnolia Society that presently has a record of 200 species, with new species and varieties being developed all the time. You may have recently seen Magnolia trees and bushes in flower. It is a stately looking flower, proud and upright, generously spread across the canopy of the tree with colours varying from pure white to magenta. This tree will do well in most soils so long as they are not in alkaline soil or a dry position. This means that locally in Leicestershire conditions are good with magnificent specimens growing in our acid soil. Magnolia trees can live for 100 years. Pollination is by beetles that are attracted by the very sweet-smelling flowers. Pruning should only be done in midsummer or autumn if your Magnolia is deciduous, however if it is evergreen then prune in spring. The Magnolia flower is said to represent, dignity and nobility. Even today in China the flowers are thought

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 of as symbols of womanly beauty and gentleness, the ‘Yin’ or the feminine side of life. Traditionally wedding bouquets in South America would include Magnolia flowers to reflect the bride’s purity and nobility. Much loved in America, the Magnolia grandiflora is the state tree of Mississippi. Newly planted trees can take several years before they flower and excess pruning can delay flowering. Occasionally evergreen varieties may suddenly lose lots of the leaves, which can be alarming but this is a natural process and new leaves will grow. Temperatures less than minus 5 degrees can be fatal and certainly late frosts can damage the flowers in spring. If you have a tree that fails to blossom it may be because it is in an area that is too cold and in a frost trap. In such a position the tree will survive but the flowers will not appear. Similarly, if you have planted your tree in the shade or in very poor soil which lacks nutrients there will be little chance of flowers. Should you need to transplant your tree then the roots should be pruned in spring and a rootball of about 1 meter across and deep will give a good chance of survival. A rootball this big is of course going to be very heavy, and so machinery and strops may be required to safely make such a move. As a last thought, to encourage you to have a Magnolia tree in your garden, I can advise that it is possible to make a delicious Magnolia Syrup. You will need Magnolia flowers, water and caster sugar. Do look up the method and recipe!

Happy gardening!

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts

Mease and Sence 1

Noon Column No

TThe Mease and Sence Noon Column is sited within C Grangewood, between Overseaal and Coton in the Elms. The shape of this, our fourth column, is carved to celebrate the ch church rch spires p which hic can be viewed from the open farmland within th this area. Grangewood is a large area which combines young plantations with some lovely mature woodland nd - it is possible to amble for hours and get quite lost here so make sure to follow the directions carefully. O Our walk takes around an hour and includes a short section of the National Forest Way - we visit the noon column m near the end of the walk. The walk starts from the car park for Grangewood Farm Forestry which is on the he road that leads from Overseal to Coton in the Elms. To find the car park you need to pass by Grangewood o Farm on your right, heading towards Coton on the Elms. l The car park for walkers is situated a little further along this road on your right hand side, it is marked by a green signboard. For Sat Nav users the nearest postcode is DE12 8BG.

2

There are two exits from the car parkk into the woodland, you need to use the one which is closest to the car park entrance (1). Immediately you leave the car park the path splits take the right hand path and then quickly fork rk right onto a path of wood chip laid between logs (2) ( which leads to a small fishing pond. Walk around the th left of the pond and then follow the wide grass ride ahead keeping the open area on your left and horse h jump off to your right. Stay on this path as it bears left to go o between b two more horse jumps and arrives at a yellow footpath marker post. Follow the arrow down ow a tree lined path. Ignore paths leading off to either side and keep straight on, passing by two more o yellow marker posts. After the third post you enter mature broadleaved woodlaand (3) where the path th meanders through the

3

trees to arrive at a sign for Top Wood. Go through the gap by the sign to a post marking th the routes of two public footpaths o s - follow the one which goes straight ahead. At the crossroads of paths (reached re before the wooden gate) turn left onto the National Forest Way. After a short distance you go through a gate leading onto a drive v to pass by Woodridge Barn. As the drive startss to bear right look to your left where you will see a stile leading off the drive and onto a path crossing s the end of the paddocks. Follow th his path over 4 sstiles to reach a 5th stile which is situ uated on your ur left hand side (4). Turn left, crossing n the e stile, and then h follow the path straight ahead of you u. When you pass by the back of the wooden n sign wh hich indicates at you are leavin ng Top Wood, you need ne to kink to the he left before continuing ahead so you are waalkking alongside mature trees on your left. Ke eep an ey eye out for a gap on your left (beside a large oak tree) - again you need to kink left, going n th hrough tthe gap, and then continuing parallel tto he path you were on but now with the hedgerow th on your o ur right. As you walk keep an eye out through o the trees e on your left and you will soon see an open aarea and, near the bottom of it, the noon column um (5). Y You can (5) c access this area via a short track through u the trees just past the column. After vi visiting the column return to the path yyou were on and keep straight ahead, d crossing over a wide grass ride.. TThe path will lead down to a T junction where it meets the hedgerow alongside on the road. Turn left here to return t to the far end of the car park. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware thatt paths may change over time and with the seasons.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS In April the Museum welcomed the Packington Men’s Group for an afternoon. They enjoyed an illustrated talk on the history of Market Street, visited the galleries and the archive upstairs and finished with a delicious afternoon tea. The Packington and Normanton Church Ladies’ Group followed two days later with a talk on Ashby in the mid 1800s, a look round the galleries and a very good buffet lunch. The exhibition of Julie Barnett’s art runs until the end of May and is attracting lots of visitors and favourable comments. Prints of her work are selling well. The Tourist Information Centre has, over the years, built up a very good newspaper archive on Ashby. We are most grateful for their kind thoughts in passing this on to us. It will be assimilated into our archive. We have acquired a copy of a recently published book on the Mammatt surname, written by June Bird (nee Mammatt). It is a substantial book which

has been meticulously researched over the course of several years. It even features a chapter on the branch of the family which now resides in Australia. This family was an important one in the town for many years, from the early 1800s. Copies are available to order. Places on our town history walks are being taken up, so if you are interested in finding out more about the past, do sign up before it is too late. Call the museum on 01530 560090. The dates are July 4th and August 9th.

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS

Please don’t take offence (We’re only doing our job!) Most people will have seen the recent headlines about the risks of being overweight to your health. Even being a small amount overweight can impact your health. Obesity can increase the risk of having a number of serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes and cancer. Being overweight can sometimes result in a delay in being treated in hospital. This can be for two reasons – (1) some surgery is less likely to be successful if one is overweight, such as knee or hip replacement surgery and (2) being overweight increases the risk of something going wrong when having surgery. In fact GPs have a duty of care to their patients to mention if you’re overweight because of the benefits being a healthy weight brings with it. Therefore please don’t be offended if one of our clinicians suggests that losing some weight might be good for you. We do have your best health interests at heart, honestly!

There’s lots of help for weight loss and exercise available online: A great website to start with is NHS Choices: www.nhs. uk/livewell/Pages/ Livewellhub.aspx. There are all sorts of g local schemes running and details of these can be found via the First Contact Plus website: www.firstcontactplus.org.uk There’s also lots of help and info especially for families at Change 4 Life: www.nhs.uk/change4life If you don’t have access to the internet we can give you leaflets here at the surgery to help. With Spring finally here there’s never been a better time to lose weight and feel better. Good Luck!

PET’S CORNER

Three Tips for Looking After Your New Guinea Pig Guinea pigs are relatively low maintenance pets, and can be a good choice for families with young children. They’re very social animals, and careful handling from an early age not only helps to their build confidence, but also encourages human interaction. Their needs include a warm, dryy and safe space to live, plenty of room to run aro ound, and a nutrient-rich diet – here are a few tips to help your guinea pig feel loved and at home. Living Guinea pigs can live indoors or outside, but will need protection from direct sunlight and the winter cold if they’re outdoors. Make sure their hutch is protected from predators in the garden and hass a separate sleeping area that’s out of sight.

Eating Good quality, non-dusty hay should form the major part of a guinea pig’s diet, with grass, leafy greens, fruit, and small quantities of guinea pig mix added every day. It’s worth remembering that a guinea pig’s teeth grow constantly and need to be ground down on the hay or grass that you provide. Play According to th he RSPCA, guinea pigs are active for up to 20 hours a day, so providing plenty of toys is key to ke eeping them entertained, especially if you choose one guinea pig rather than a pair. Guinea pigs can live for up to eight years, so this is a long commitment regardless of the lower level off daily care they require wh hen compared with cats and dogss.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BOOK REVIEWS

Curl up with a book

Make the most of the longer evenings by curling up with one of this month’s top reads. The Witchfinder’s Sister Beth Underdown Alice Hopkins finds herself caught up in her brother Matthew’s war against witches in 17th century England. How far will she go to draw suspicion away from herself and those she loves? When a birthmark can be seen as evidence of witchcraft, no one is safe. Tense, atmospheric and chilling in its reimagining of historical events, The Witchfinder’s Sister makes for a gripping read. The Sealwoman’s Gift Sally Magnusson Historical fiction at its finest, The Sealwoman’s Gift is based on the true story of Ásta and her family, who were kidnapped by pirates in Iceland in 1627. Along with hundreds of other Europeans, Ásta was shipped across the globe and sold into slavery in Algiers. In this fictionalised account, Magnusson imagines how Ásta, a pastor’s wife, would have coped in a culture that was completely alien to her. In the end, Ásta has to choose between her freedom and the only child who hasn’t yet been ripped away from her. Save this book for a long train journey, because you won’t want to put it down. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Stuart Turton Groundhog Day meets Agatha Christie meets Quantum Leap in this tightly plotted debut novel. A man wakes up in the forest with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He soon finds out that he needs to solve a murder, and will keep reliving the day over and over again until he does so. Very clever, highly original and a real page turner to boot, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle deserves to rocket up the bestseller charts.

The Radleys Matt Haig Rowan Radley has no idea why he feels so lethargic all the time, is sensitive to light and suffers from insomnia. Until, that is, his sister kills a wouldbe attacker and Rowan’s parents reveal that the whole family are vampires. A witty, easy read from the bestselling author of The Humans and How To Stop Time, The Radleys is less gothic horror and more a gentle poke at middle-class life and the pressure put on people to conform. Not a recent release this one, but worth a mention nonetheless. Only Child Rhiannon Navin Seven year old Zach Taylor’s world changes forever when his brother is killed in a mass shooting. As his parents struggle to cope with their grief, Zach finds his own ways of dealing with his loss. A beautiful story that is as much about forgiveness and family as it is about loss. We can’t guarantee you won’t cry, but you certainly won’t forget Only Child in a hurry. The End of Loneliness Benedict Wells Jules is sent to boarding school with his siblings following the death of his parents. As his brother and sister drift away, Jules finds solace in a classmate, Alva. Spanning 40 years of loneliness, disconnection and disjointed memories, this novel touches on many themes, from dementia to grief, via hope, love and friendship. Quietly brilliant, The End of Loneliness was awarded the European Prize for Literature in 2016 and has recently been translated from German to English.
