HELLO HERITAGE
Say Hello Heritage this September as venues open their doors for FREE A fortnight of free open days, tours, walks and events will take place at historic heritage locations in the heart of the National Forest this month. Between Saturday 1st and Sunday 16 September, Hello Heritage will return for its second year in North West Leicestershire, this time having expanded into South Derbyshire too, increasing the number of participating venues. More than 35 sites brimming with history, heritage and culture will be open for the public to enjoy with a wide range of offerings including guided tours, music, exhibitions, walks and talks. A SMALL SNAPSHOT OF JUST A FEW OF HELLO HERITAGE’S OFFERINGS INCLUDE:
• Follow in the footsteps of Robert Stephenson at the Swannington Incline • Explore two engine house complexes, miners’ cottages and an 18th century haystack boiler at the Califat coal mine • Take an all access tour of Coalville’s Century Theatre • Join Coleorton Heritage Group and learn about the village during a two-hour stroll
Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said: “This area is rich in culture and heritage, with stories waiting to be told around every corner. “Visitors can enjoy a treasure trove of discoveries, from admiring the scenic beauty of The National Forest to taking a step back in time with our historical walks. These booklets can be picked up at both Ashby and Swadlincote Tourist Information Centres. In signing up to take part in Hello Heritage, the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds said: “Ashby Bath Grounds is the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the historic market town of Ashby de la Zouch. Steeped in history, the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds will be welcoming visitors for a guided tour along the heritage footpath and the newly established wildlife walk.” A full brochure detailing all the available free activities and events can be found at www.nwleics.gov.uk/helloheritage
• Explore Swannington’s 200-year-old Hough Mill • Visit the Fifty Fantastic Females exhibition in Coalville • Learn about the civil war and Bonnie Prince Charlie, at a Swarkestone history walk • Discover St Wilfrid’s Church in Barrow upon Trent, a hidden gem with Anglo Saxon origins • Join Dot Morson on a talk through time to learn how Swadlincote has evolved from pits and pots to parks and woods. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Last year’s debut Hello Heritage was a great success and we want to build on that this time around. “We are very proud of our heritage in North West Leicestershire and this is your chance to immerse yourselves in it. It’s going to be a fantastic fortnight for everyone to enjoy.”

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
Get the most out of your gym session!! How often do you pay your monthly gym membership but never actually go or how often do you turn up to your local gym to find it too busy for you to do anything, after you have rushed around to get there? More often than not when you do actually do get there you end up feeling overwhelmed by the amount of people there, leaving you wondering what to do next to make your workout effective. All that kit makes you feel so insecure! Time is so precious as we are all so busy so what could you do to make that gym session count? My view is that gyms should never be overcrowded with people or kit and they should definitely be in positive uplifting rooms, not basements or rooms with no windows. You would be more motivated if you had an appointment at your gym with someone there who gets to know you. The sessions should be structured covering all aspects of your health and fitness. Your time in the gym needs to count and you need to avoid missing your sessions.

You don’t ever have to feel overwhelmed, intimidated or lost in a gym. You need to be accountable to yourself, your time and someone at the gym. If you can’t make your appointed session you need to look at alternatives, let the gym know and attend your alternative session. Be accountable for YOUR health and fitness! SPOTLIGHT ON...
Age UK befriending service Are you a ‘people’ person? Do you like to chat but equally are you a good listener? Can you spare an hour or two regularly to really make a difference to an older, isolated person? Then you could be a great befriender!!! As we grow old there are many challenges to face and these aren’t always limited to health issues. For example, loneliness is more common than you think for the elderly. “Currently, a million people over 65 feel lonely ‘often’ or ‘always’ and 3.7 million people live alone, many with no means of getting out and about.” (English Longitudinal Study on Ageing) Social isolation and loneliness affects a person’s quality of life. Life changing events such as becoming housebound, losing your carer or your partner, not having your family around you during the day or a change in your health and your ability to get out and about can disconnect you from the outside world and leave you feeling lonely. Often people do not want to ask for help but no one wants to be lonely every day. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, working together with North West Leicestershire District Council offers a volunteer befriending service aimed at tackling loneliness and providing much needed company and friendship for older people within our area. This works by matching an older person with a befriender who will visit or call on a regular basis to enjoy a chat, provide a listening ear or perhaps provide support to get out and about in the local community. Initially as a volunteer it’s about finding out about your new friend, their interests and how you can best help them. All volunteer befrienders receive training and support. The befriending project not only tackles loneliness and isolation it can also act as a gateway to other services provided by Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland such as their local day care centres, their free information and

advice team or local social opportunities, details of which the volunteer befriender can provide. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland currently has a list of local elderly residents in North West Leicestershire seeking friendship and company. Just a few hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to somebody and make you a new friend. A current volunteer befriender sums up the benefit to him of his befriending role; “I have been visiting Jack for just over a year now. He just wants to see somebody for a coffee and a chat, I get a tremendous warm feeling from that experience.” If you could be a friend to a local, older person and offer a regular visit to them please get in touch with Donna Watson, Befriending Co-ordinator at Coalville Library, High Street, Coalville. LE67 3EA. Whether young or old, male or female, Donna would love to hear from you. IN YOUR GARDEN
Highgrove Royal Gardens
I recently had a wonderful day visiting the gardens at Highgrove. This is the private home of HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. The gardens are charming and the separate areas link effortlessly and interestingly into one another. The gardens have been shaped and developed over the last 35 years with a view to enhancing the setting of the house. This aim has been achieved through careful planning and with the help of a few top plants people and designers such as Rosemary Very, Sir Roy Strong, and of course a very talented gardening team. One of the more recently opened parts is the carpet garden inspired by a Turkish carpet. The shapes within the carpet were interpreted into a garden space for the Chelsea Flower Show in 2001 and then later transferred to Highgrove to be recycled and enjoyed. It is a surprising space and very tranquil, enclosed by pink walls and cypress trees.

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 There are various different areas including a cottage garden with a pink, yellow and blue theme; a Mediterranean garden; a Thyme Walk edged with golden yew topiary and hornbeam pleeched hedges; a terrace garden by the house with a mill stone water feature at its centre and four recently planted 150 year old olive trees from Spain. Unsurprisingly there is also a really lovely productive kitchen garden which is entirely organic, as you would expect, and is divided into the shape of the crosses of Saint George and Saint Andrew by the plant Buxus semperviren (Box) hedges. At the end of the Azalea walk there is a statue of Diana, The Goddess of Hunting. It is here in this part of the garden I saw my most favourite thing – an inscription over a doorway in Egyptian hieroglyphics which translates as: ‘the Flowers in the garden are a reflection of the stars in the sky’. I suppose unsurprisingly, as we are talking about a royal home, there also happens to be room for an arboretum too, which within in it hides a ‘sanctuary’ - built as a place for contemplation. Space for all these different gardens is not the norm, but in fact this place does feel imaginably liveable and homely. I think this has been achieved by being thoughtfully done slowly over time, for the enjoyment of the owners. Profits from the garden tours are donated to the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation and information about forthcoming tours can be found at www.highgrovegardens.com

THE 1620s HOUSE AND GARDEN The site has been very busy over the past two months, with lots of events and activities and plenty of new and returning visitors. Thanks to the hard work of the garden volunteers, the period gardens are still looking splendid despite the prolonged dry weather and the house volunteers have relished greeting so many visitors to the house. The house will close for the winter at the end of September, but before that happens there is still plenty to come and see at the site: Saturday 1st September 11am – 4pm See the costumed members of the Friends Jacobean Craft Group as they work on various ongoing sewing projects. Normal admission applies. Wednesday 12th September 7pm - Join us In the barn tea rooms for a Highwayman Talk to discuss the English Highwayman, from 1550 to 1640. Many will have heard the name Dick Turpin but few, if any, will know of the exploits of Sir George Sandys and his family. What inspired men – and women – to chance it upon the highway? Were there Highwaymen living at Donington Manor House? Ticketed event £6
Sunday 16th September 1.30 – 3.30 Nick Gravestock will be playing the lute in The Great Chamber. Normal admission applies. Sunday 23rd September 10.30 – 4.30 Join us for our family Country Fun Day , which includes animals from Lion Learners, crafts, games, an autumn trail and much more. Normal admission applies with £2 uplift. Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th The house comes alive for our season closer as the Sealed Knot move in for the weekend. They have lots for children and adults so come and join the fun with their early 17th century living history displays. Normal admission plus £2 uplift.

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS
Flu time is here again but there have been some changes …. Adult Flu vaccination
We’re expecting our flu supplies to arrive from mid-September. This year it’s a little more complicated than in previous years because there are different types of flu vaccination depending on age and the deliveries are going to be more spread out than usual so we won’t be able to vaccinate everybody as early as we normally do. Our Saturday flu clinics this year will be on 29th September and 13th October As a quick reminder, everyone over the age of 65 (or who will be 65 before 31st March 2019) and anybody in one of the at-risk groups who is aged from 6 months to 64 (see our web site for who this applies too) is eligible for a free NHS flu jab. Please call and book now if you’re eligible or to check if you’re eligible.

We are not expecting this vaccine to be delivered until mid-October and so our clinics for this will start around then. Parents of eligible children will receive a text reminder if we have your mobile number. (If not please let us have it as soon as possible, thanks.)

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS An important local historical figure; Ann Ayre Hely is to be honoured with a Green Plaque from Leicestershire County Council which will be installed on the outside wall of Ravenstone Hospital historic almhouses. The unveiling will take place on 27th September and will stand as a permanent tribute to her life and achievements. Ann was born Ann Ayre Bradshaw in the village of Ravenstone in 1919 and was obviously a very courageous and able woman. From a very ordinary background (her parents kept the Plough Inn) she went on to volunteer as a nurse during the Crimean War and worked in two hospitals in Turkey, firstly Smyrna and then Renioi. Ann was clearly good at her job and highly thought of. An entry in the nursing register at the Florence Nightingale Museum describes her as “a very superior woman, a clever nurse, excellent temper, honest, sober, trustworthy and obliging, a great peace-maker amongst others.”
On her return to England after the war she nursed Florence Nightingale herself for a short while and was chosen to nurse the mother of Queen Victoria but the Duchess died before Ann could take up her post. At the age of 78 she was honoured with the Order of the Royal Red Cross military nursing medal. After her death in 1902, her story was almost forgotten and even her medal was lost. The new Green Plaque will be available for public viewing from 28th September onwards.

PET’S CORNER
Is Your Pet in Pain?
September is Animal Pain Awaren ness Month
It’s definitely worthwhile paying attention to changes in your pet’s behaviour, as it could indicate that they’re in pain. September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, so here we look at some of the signs you should look for. Altered sleeping patterns Some pets sleep more when they’re dealing with pain, whilst others are less able to sleep because of the discomfort. If your pet’s general sleeping pattern has altered noticeably, it’s worth looking a little closer at other behaviours, as it could be a sign of physical distress. Changed social interactions It’s more obvious when your pet withdraws from social interactions if they’re naturally gregarious, but even quieter animals may be noticeably withdrawn when they’re feeling pain. On the other hand, they could be more aggressive, or generally less tolerant of people and other animals around them.
Drop in appetite Hum mans tend to lose their appetite when in pain, and it’s the same with anim mals. If your pet is eatin ng less and appears to be losing weight, speak to your vet as there might be a serious underlying cause. Change in eye appearance When an animal is in pain, it often shows in their eyes, which can appear strained, potentially with larger dilated pupils. Dogs and cats also sometimes squint, and develop bloodshot eyes. It’s often an animal’s general behaviour that alerts you to their pain, but by keeping an eye out for these telltale signs, you’ll be able to react quickly and deal with the cause.

A WALK IN THE FOREST suppplied by Liz Roberts
Saltersford d Valley 1
W We are so lucky to live within the National N Forest - there are new spotss popping up regularly that have p been made into wonderful areas of woodland, plus loads that have been around for quite a few years now.
and are on the path which was originally on your left when en you first entered the clearing - you should now have the lakes on your right). Keep following in this path through a gateway, te passing by a wide track c to the left ft which hi h leads back to the car p park.
Here’s one that is easily overlooked but it’s a lovely spot for a quiet stroll. This walk around the Saltersford Valley Picnic area follows a sort of figure of eight and takes from 20 mins to half an hour but there’s scope to sp spend much longer relaxing or exploring if you wish. There T is seating on the way around, open grassy areas ea and plenty of birdlife on the lakes including swans, s, tufted ducks, moorhen and grebes. The paths are all well maintained with good surfaces but the boardwalk can ca be slippery when wet so do take care. If we have had very heavy rain the he path at the very far end may get flooded. Saltersford Valley is situated d off Measham Road in Oakthorpe – look for the sign into the car park as you go through the dip in the bottom of the valley. The postcode for sat nav users is DE12 7RF.
This hard core path will now curve around to the right, passing byy the first of several stations for fishermen at the side of the lake. On coming to a fork in the path h keep right, close to the water. The path crosses ov over two small bridges (4) and then passes an open area on the e left before cu urving back through ro the trees to givve you a view over the far end of the e lakes.
Follow the path across boardwalk – this will take you out between the reeds and across the (3) before e lake l curving around in a loop to the left. Follow the pretty F path under the trees before returning ni to the clearing where you started. Once again walk straight across the clearing (you have now completed the first loop of the fi fig gure of eight
3
Conttinue around the main path with the open C en grassy area, which you have now looped around, g on yyour left and a bench on o your right h (5). You will soon be back at the fork where you started the second d loop of your figure of eight – keep p straight on with the water now on your left to come back to the gateway w leading into the clearing at the sstart of the walk. Turn right before the e gateway to go up a wide path (6) which hi will lead you uphill and back to the car park. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

As you turn away from the waater there e is a gate on your rig ght which h give access to an nother field and more of the faar lakeside. id Go through the gate to explore e this area – this path is a dead end so you will n need to retrace your steps and g go back through the gate afterwards. wards

In the car park you will see a large wooden gate opposite the signboard and, a little further round to the right, there is a smaller wooden gate leading onto Angels Walk (1). Go through this smaller mall gate and follow the well-made track down through g the trees to come out into a small clearing. Walk straight gh across the clearing, ignoring paths to your right and left, and onto the start of the boardwalk (2).

BOOK REVIEWS
Books to make you think The Salt Path Raynor Winn Raynor and her husband Moth lost their farm just days after finding out that Moth was suffering from an incurable, lifelimiting illness. With no money and nowhere to live, the couple made the decision to walk the South West Coast Path – 630 miles through Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. The Salt Path is the true story of that walk – the challenges Raynor and Moth faced, the people they met and the things they learnt along the way. Once Morris Gleitzman Morris Gleitzman’s series follows a Jewish boy called Felix in Poland during the Second World War. Felix runs away from an orphanage in search of his parents, who disappeared several years before. Along the way, he befriends a girl called Zelda, and receives help from various people he meets. As you’d expect, the story is harrowing at times, but it’s also funny, uplifting and impossible to put down. This one will stay with you for a very long time. The Dark Between Stars: Poems Atticus Atticus has become something of a social media sensation over the last couple of years. His latest book, The Dark Between Stars, is out this month. The poems cover themes such as living with purpose, loneliness, and the highs and lows of a life welllived. Each poem is just a few lines long (some are a single line) and many of them are illustrated or accompanied by a photograph. Several of Atticus’s poems are also available at www.instagram.com/atticuspoetry.

Fantastically Great Women Who Made History Kate Pankhurst A follow-on from Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World, this children’s book includes stories about a diverse range of women, from Boudicca to Harriet Tubman. The tales are engaging, fun to read and brought to life with colourful illustrations. Each story only takes a few minutes to read, so this is a perfect book to read with your child at bedtime. You might just learn something new yourself. Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found Cheryl Strayed Wild became an international bestseller back in 2013, and was made into a film adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon. If you missed both, add the book to your wish list today. After losing her mother at 22, Cheryl fell into a downward spiral that saw her cheating on her husband and taking hard drugs. She ended up packing a backpack and setting off on a 1,100 mile hike from Mexico to Canada. Along the way she both found her way ‘back to the person I used to be’ and discovered the adult she wanted to become.
