ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
Historic Walks Our summer programme of town history walks will begin in June with a general walk on Wednesday 7th June followed by a second one on Wednesday 16th August. These are always very popular and booking is essential. More details will follow. Additionally, in June and August we are building on the success of the previous two years and will host groups from outside the area who will enjoy a history walk, lunch and a talk/visit to the castle.
Not only are we the town museum but also that of the surrounding villages of Breedon, Blackfordby, Packington, Coleorton, Smisby and Staunton Harold/Lount. We are very grateful to the family of the late Mick Shaw of Breedon for donating his archive of village life. John Pearson is enhancing our photographic capabilities by the introduction of a light tent with inbuilt LED lighting. Our next exhibition in April will commemorate

A WALK IN THE FOREST
Bardon Hill
This is a beautiful circular walk around the woods an nd heathland of Bardon Hill. The paths are all well marked, with part of the walk following the Ivanhoe Way. B Bardon Hill is the highest point in Leeicestershire but by going around th he hill first we avoid the steepest ccllimb (though you do come down that t wa ay). The views are fantastic. The T hillside has been managed by g grazing to encourrage the growth of o heathers and other heathland plants and attracts m d a green much wildlife - we spotted woodpecker on our walk. It is also apparently a good place to see migrant birds in Spring so keep an eye open for anything unusual.
1
The paths can be slippery in places, especially after wet weather, so I’d advise sturdy footwear. This walk took us around an hour.
2
h ll Rd d in Coalville. l ll The walk starts near the top of Greenhill nt and Between the entrances to Kenmore Crescen Romans Crescent look out for a green arrrow where the ually possible to Ivanhoe Way crosses the Rd. It is usu park close to the start point but itt is a residential area so please be careful not to blockk anyones access. For Sat Nav users, the postcode LE67 4RJ should bring you to the start. Leave Ashby via Wood Street/Nottingham Rd and follow the A511 towarrds Coalville. Keep on the A511 going around Coalviille, passing Stephensons College and then going acro oss the next two roundabouts. On reaching the traffic liights turn left into Broom Leys Rd and then fork right just after the Hospital into Greenhill Rd. Keep on for about 1 mile, parking in the second lay-by on the right (oppossite Stamford Drive). Take the Ivanhoe Way, following the green sign (1) that leads off Grreenhill Rd on the opposite side to Stamford Drive Driv (same side as Kenmore Cres/ Rom mans Cres). Follow the footpath bettween the fences through to Verco or Clo osse where the path leavves th he end of the cul de sac going over a small stream and through a metal swing gate into fields.
3
16
Look out for a slightly overgrown Ivanhoe Way marker post on your
left and follow the arrow up the left hand side of the open area. The path curves around to the left under an oak tree (2), passes by some large stones and then comes to a metal gate at the entrance to the woods where theree is a warning sign telling you of the usual quarry blasting times.
4
Continue ahead on thiis wide trackway which ge of the woods. Ignore leads around the edg tthe first path off to o your right, keeping straigh ht on around the edg o ge of the woodland with p parts of an old sto one well and open land visiblee off to your left. o When you reach the edge of the woods on yourr riight the path aheead narrows - there is a metal gate an nd low stile (3) to o your right at this point. Turn rig ght to o go over the stilee and follow the path pa h uphill with the wo oods on your uarry land on your right and open qu left. The path bearss around to the left before reachin ng a flight of steps down (4). Immediaately after the steps turn sharp right to o follow a surfaced track steeply uph hill. There is a handy stile and dog gate next to the cattle grid half way up p - by now you can see the radio d mast ahead at the top p of the hill.
5
Ignore a footp path off to the left and, shortly before reaching the brick building, tu urn right to follow a well marked path through a metaal swing gate. After the gate you will em merge into an opeen area on the hilltop with a handy wo ooden bench wheere you can sit and admire the fine view ws. The path now drops steeply back downhill and curves right to enter the woods (5)). This path ends at a meetal gate where you turn left to rejoin the wide trackway around the woodss that you started out on. Go back down the trackway and retrace your steps past the large stones (6), down the fields and through the swing gate into Vercor Close. On leaving Vercor Close cross the Rd to access the footpath between the fences back onto Greenhill Rd.
6
All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

GET STARTED
1.
Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, mixed spice, orange zest, sugar and dried yeast. Make a well in the middle.
2.
Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir in the butter until melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot. Pour the liquid into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round- bladed knife to make a soft and slightly sticky dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
3.
20
Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.

ON THE BEAT
Stopping nuisance calls If you’re fed up of receiving unwanted sales calls, or want to help a relative who is, there is a way to stop them. Did you know that BT Call Protect offers a FREE service to all of its customers? It’s quick and simple to set up. You can choose which calls you want to take and the ones to send to your junk voicemail. You can also manage your calls in three ways:
• BT blacklist – An identified list of nuisance callers.
Calls from these numbers will be sent to your junk voicemail. The blacklist will significantly cut the amount of unwanted calls you get. It will be turned on by default when you get BT Call Protect.
• Personal blacklist - You can add the
last call you answered (from your home phone) or any other phone number at bt.com/btcallprotect to your own blacklist. So that any future calls from those numbers also go to your junk voicemail. This feature will be switched on too, but won’t have any numbers until you add some.
• Individual call types - You can choose to send
all calls from certain categories to your junk voicemail. The three call types are: o International numbers o Withheld numbers o Unrecognised numbers (shown as unavailable on caller display or on 1471)
Simply call 1572 from your home phone to manage your settings. It’s free to call. Or visit www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/phone/ call-protect/ PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

IN YOUR GARDEN
Flowering
cherries
Cherry blossom is a sure sign that summer is on its way. In Japan the people celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossom. Such celebrations can be traced for over 1,000 years. The cherry blossom is said to symbolise the beauty and fleeting nature of life, and also new beginnings. Tokyo is a great metropolis, but there are many parks and famously Ueno Park has over 1,000 cherry trees. Cherry blossoms were first cultivated in Japan’s imperial gardens from 794 to 1185, during Hanami (flower viewing festivals) where parties of aristocrats and poets assembled each spring. Clusters of pale pink petals are said to evoke cloud formations, linking them to Buddhist precept that life’s pleasures are transient. Never mind the lovely blossom; there is fruit to enjoy too. I planted a couple of Morello Cherries and have been delighted at how pretty they are, with the dark bark trunks and branches and beautiful simple white blossom. Most of all they produce delicious red fruits

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk –fine food for the birds and for me. The trouble is that as the years go on, the birds seem to remember how lovely they are and now try pulling them off before they are ready. Of all the cherry trees, Morellos are possibly the easiest to grow as the risk of frost affecting the fruit is usually over by the time they are in flower. Generally the trees we buy today are grafted on to a stem of wild cherry. To grow a cherry tree you usually need a depth of soil of about 40cm for their roots to establish. During the life of a tree, fertile new growth is formed on the branches. A variety that has an open habit with horizontal branches will offer the most favourable conditions for fertility. In order for the fruit to form, the flowers of fruit trees and bushes must be properly pollinated. The flowers are pollinated either by insects or the wind. In prolonged cold weather the pollen filament grows slowly and the fruit production is poor. Also low fruiting can be due to poor nutrican and soil, or a drought. Cherries do best in deep soil that is light and gravelly, rich in calcium and well manured. In dry situations they grow poorly and the fruits will be small. In damp places and cold places they can freeze and suffer from sap dripping. The very best position is on a slope protected from the north winds. Spring is in the air, and it is not just the cherries, but all the fruiting trees from Apple, Plum and Pear trees will produce spring blossom. Let’s look forward to longer days being outside. Hurray: it’s been a long, wet winter. Happy gardening!

PET’S CORNER
Four strange
cat behaviours explained
Cats are amusing and fun to be around, but sometimes their behaviour just seems downright bizarre. If you’ve ever wondered why your cat behaves in a certain way, from kneading its paws to eating plastic bags, we might be able to offer a little insight.
Head butts When your cat bumps its head against you, it means they’re trying to bond and is an expression of affection. They’re also demonstrating trust in you and marking you out as a ‘member of their club’. Staring Staring is a common trait in cats, if a little unnerving when you’re on the receiving end. They generally stare at their prey before pouncing, but in your case it could be a determined request for food or entertainment. You should also rule out any potential medical reasons if their pupils are constantly dilated - it could be the result of an eye or other health issue.

Eating plastic Eating non-food items such as plastic, paper, wool or even electrical cords may be a sign of ‘pica’. This is an eating disorder that can be caused by dietary deficiency, stress, boredom or in some cases an underlying health problem.
Kneading When your cat sits on your knee and starts to knead, it’s a sign of contentment and is usually accompanied by a loud purring. They also have scent glands on the bottom of their paw pads, and may be kneading to leave their scent behind – effectively claiming you as their own.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
Fat
vs
Muscle
The question that people ask the most is which one is the heaviest, Fat or Muscle? Can fat turn into muscle or muscle turn into fat?
The fact is they both weigh exactly the same but muscle is denser than fat (see picture) therefore occupying less space than fat. This is the reason why you could get two people weighing the same, one of them is really lean and muscular while the other one looks overweight and out of condition. It is really common for people, on exercise and weight reduction programs, to see no great difference on the scales but significant differences in the way they look and the way their clothes fit, this is because the composition of their bodies have changed. All this highlights the importance of including weight training in your weight management plans. The other great benefit of having
External plastering
We cover all aspects of plastering, domestic and commercial.
As for one turning in to the other, this is not possible as they are two completely different ‘tissues.’ As your body increases it’s muscle mass there is likely to be a decrease in body fat as it would ‘get burnt’ more effectively. If you then decided not to exercise and overeat, your muscle mass would decrease and body fat would increase. Make sure you always include weight training in your exercise regime! IBSTOCK & BARLESTONE SURGERIES
Gardening Club for patients As most of our patients will know, we have a small piece of land at the back of the surgery which is currently grassed. We would like to start a club for patients to come together socially to use some of this land. We have in mind a garden or allotment project but would ideally like the project to grow to suit the volunteers and members. If you enjoy gardening to grow vegetables or flowers or to plant trees or shrubs to attract particular insects and birds, then why not join us? Whether you have your own garden or not doesn’t matter, whether you are good at gardening or just wish to learn, everybody is welcome if you are a patient of the practice. We are open to any sensible ideas of the type of garden.
48
If you are interested in helping to get this club up and running or just interested in attending, please let reception know in the first place and we’ll get back to you about this exciting new project.

STORYTIME
The Last of the
Wild Chickens
By Jackie Brewster
Vinny burst through the door of the community centre. “You’ll never guess what’s on top of the bike shed!”
“Just grab her firmly around her sides,” Eunice said. “I’ll go and phone the caretaker to see if he knows who she belongs to.”
At the mention of the bike shed Eunice’s heart skipped a beat; had Vinny discovered her guilty secret?
Eunice went back into the community hall and paced up and down. She needed time to think. Within moments Vinny popped his head around the door.
She’d been stacking chairs, assuming that all the members of her ‘Trimmer You!’ slimming club had departed. It had been a tough session. She’d had to be particularly strict with the group about avoiding the temptation of chocolate over the Bank Holiday weekend. There had been tears. Now Vinny was back, his ‘Trimmer of the Week’ rosette flapping in the breeze. “An actual chicken!” he continued breathlessly. “Sat there bold as brass.” Eunice stared at him, her mind racing. A chicken was not what she was expecting. “Don’t be daft,” she reasoned. “There’s no way a chicken could get up there - they can’t fly.” “Try telling that to this one,” Vinny laughed. “It’s probably just a pigeon,” Eunice said firmly, hoping this would be enough to make Vinny finally go home. “I’m no Bill Oddie, but I think I know the difference,” he said. “Come and have a look if you don’t believe me.” Very reluctantly Eunice pulled on her anorak and followed Vinny to the bike shed. A fat brown bantam sat clucking on the flat roof admiring the view. “I wonder where it’s come from,” Eunice said, her eyes searching the rest of the roof. “Someone round here must keep chickens.” “Perhaps it’s been living wild,” Vinny said. “A chicken wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild.” “Well they had to live in the wild originally,” Vinny answered. “This might be the last of the wild chickens.” “We’ll have to get it down,” Eunice said irritably, reminded, more than ever, how annoying Vinny could be. “We can’t lock up and leave it there. Can you reach up and grab it?” “I’m not sure.” Vinny looked worried. “I’ve never held a bird before.” Eunice did not find this at all surprising. The bird ruffled her wings and stared at them indignantly.

“Mystery solved!” he said cheerfully. “This lady walked into the car park and asked if I’d seen her chicken.” “Who was it?” Eunice hoped her ordeal was finally over. “Someone from the village,” Vinny said. “She said chickens can fly, they’re just not very good at it. Apparently this one’s always trying to escape.” “So it wasn’t a wild chicken then?” Eunice smirked. “No, but I think it was a magic one. Look...” From behind his back Vinny produced a large Easter egg wrapped in pink foil. “It had rolled down the side of the shed. That chicken must have laid it.” Eunice stared first at Vinny in disbelief, and then at the incriminating confectionary. She had one last trick up her sleeve. “A chocolate egg laying chicken!” she gasped. “I’ve heard of them but I’ve never seen one in real life.” She held out her hand for the egg. “I’d better take care of that.” “What are you going to do with it?”Vinny whispered as though afraid to wake it. “Do you think it will hatch?” “Maybe,” Eunice said, “particularly if I take it home and put it somewhere nice and warm.” Which, in a roundabout way, had been Eunice’s plan for that egg all along.
