PANCAKE DAY

Fantastic This year Pancake Day is Tuesday 28th February. More traditionally known as Shrove Tuesday, this is the Christian feast day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. Lent is a time of sacrifice, so Pancake Day historically was the perfect time to use up ingredients such as eggs and fats which are intrinsic to pancakes. Historically Christians went to Church on Shrove Tuesday to seek absolution, otherwise known as shriving for their sins. So Shrove is taken from the word Shrive. A bell would ring to call people to confession and this became known as the Pancake or Shriven Bell. The date of Shrove Tuesday varies because it occurs 47 days before Easter Sunday which also alters year on year based on cycles of the moon. In the UK there are various traditions associated with this day in addition to the eating of pancakes. These include: Pancake Races: - One of the most famous races takes place in Olney in Buckinghamshire where is it believed the idea of the contest originated. It is said to be based on the story of a local woman who whilst she was making pancakes, heard the Shriven Bell and ran to church still wearing her apron and tossing her pancake in a frying pan to prevent it from burning. For this reason in Olney, racers must be local housewives or men dressed as such and wear an apron and a hat or scarf. During the 415 yard race they have to toss their hot pancake at least three times and the winner has to serve their pancake to the bell ringer and be kissed by him. Other variations of the race include the one held at 8

From the twelfth century onwards, Shrove Tuesday Football Games were played out in the streets and often referred to as mob football. Nowadays only a few games take place as highways legislation has prohibited playing football on the road since 1835. In Scarborough on Shrove Tuesday, it is customary for a large skipping rope to be in place and for up to ten people to be skipping at a time. In some other countries, this date is known as Mardi Gras and is marked by carnivals. These are still linked to the concept of celebrating the last day of ‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the commencement of Lent. The French translation of Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday.

Library

Here in the Whats Around office we get to hear of so many local charities and volunteer groups carrying out invaluable work for the community in our area. This can take many forms and varies from fundraising to tackle illnesses and poverty to volunteering time and support to aid those around us and provide essential services for local residents. This month we share one such story.. In 2016, BBC News reported that in the last six years 343 local libraries have closed and a quarter of the jobs in UK libraries had been lost. However, in that same period, over 15,000 volunteers have stepped up to breach the gap and 174 libraries were transferred to community groups to run. On 20th July last year, Leicestershire County Council granted Measham & District Community Library a 10 year lease to run the library. Measham & District Community Library is a registered charity having 37 volunteers of whom 8 are committee members / charity trustees. This team have come together to ensure the future of the library and the continuation of a local library service for residents and already they have achieved impressive results. To date, the library interior has been repainted thanks to a generous grant from Measham Parish Council and a whole host of fundraising activities have been held to cover running costs (estimated £8,000 pa) once the Leicestershire County Council grant runs out. A Macmillan Cancer Relief coffee morning was held on the 1st October and this raised £504 and on 1st December the library opened late with a Christmas Fair to coincide with Measham’ s Christmas light event raising over £250. To develop the library as a community hub the following activities are regularly held:Tuesday – ladies craft group. Thursday – walking group. Thursday – medical centre craft group. Friday – rhyme time group & book club.

Voluntary Action Leicestershire has secured funding for a Stroke & Disability group to use the library every Wednesday and yoga classes will run during term time on a Tuesday evening. Consideration is also being given to installing solar panels to reduce electricity costs and fencing the grounds around the library to create a safe playing area for children and for users to sit outside and have a drink whilst reading a book. We’ll keep you posted on progress. Finally, the library is also keen to participate in the Government’s £4million fund for libraries to promote new projects for literacy and digital access having 5 computers available for public use. I’m sure you’ll agree with us that the work of the volunteers at Measham & District Community Library has already made a huge difference to local residents. A WALK IN THE FOREST

A great family walk

Normanton Le Heath A pretty, circular, walk that crosses farmland between the villages of Normanton Le Heath and Swepstone. On the first half of the walk you get a good view of the tower of Swepstone Church while on the return loop you can see the spire of Normanton Church. There is a bit of quiet lane at the start of the walk and a short road section through Swepstone. The paths were mostly very well marked with the exception of the start of the return path from Swepstone where it leads off the road onto to the drive of Upperfield Farm, it is signed after you leave the farm though. Allow about an hour and a half for this walk. The instructions start from Main Street in Normanton, I parked on the road near the church. The postcode for Sat Nav users is LE67 2TB.

Walk down Main Street with the Church (1) on your left and pass by The Hollow. The lane soon bends sharply right and shortly after the bend there is a public footpath sign on your left. Climb the stile (2) and follow the path into a field. The path passes beside a bank of beautiful, old, hawthorn trees which are absolutely stunning when in full bloom, and leads to a second stile which, like the first, is fitted with a handy dog gate beside it. Immediately after crossing the stile and plank bridge the path splits - you need to take the right hand fork to bear diagonally right across the field. Cross a small bridge in the valley and then walk uphill to a stile set in the far field hedge - keep your eye out for the yellow footpath post ahead when you are on the brow of the hill. The path now bears slightly left - you are quite high up and get a good view of the tower of Swepstone Church off to your left.

Crossing a further stile, set in the corner of the field, follow the yellow arrows left and then right, before going up a short section of field edge to reach a junction of paths (3). Don’t go through the gap ahead or follow either of the arrows but instead turn left before the gap in the wooden fence (the red arrow for the path

this way is hidden, being on the back of the yellow post to your right). You are now going down the field edge with the hedgerow on your right. Keep straight ahead, passing across a farm track. You are soon on a grassy lane (4) which bends around before finally emerging onto a tarmac drive which will take you up to the road through Swepstone.

Turn left, keeping to the verge and then the pavement as you pass through the village. Continue until you pass ‘The Cottage’, on your left and then take the stile beside a metal gate just after it on your left. (5) A grass path crosses the small enclosure to a further gate onto a driveway (if you walk a short distance further along the road you can turn left into the same driveway). The drive passes a sign welcoming you to Upperfield Farm and then leads past the houses and through a black gate. As you reach the end of the yard you will see a sign reading Public Footpath to Normanton, just to the left of the stable block. This narrow path leads you up the side of the building and along a field where where the bridleway and footpath separate (6). Follow the footpath sign, left and then right keeping to the narrow path up the field edge. Cross a plank bridge and continue uphill along another field edge.

At the top of the hill keep straight ahead to pass under the telegraph poles which come in from your left. Keep the field hedge on your right and look out for the spire of Normanton Le Heath church ahead of you. Pass over a stone bridge and then follow a footpath arrow diagonally left across the field,. When you reach the stile, in the hedge on the far side of the field, you are rejoining your outgoing route. Cross the stile to re enter the field with the bank of old hawthorn (now on your right) and then cross the final stile back onto Normanton Lane. Turn right and follow the lane back to return to your start point. All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

Ivanhoe runners are pleased and proud to announce that Aldi Ashby 20 is soon coming to town! The two lap course will circuit around the local villages of Packington, Swepstone, Heather and Normanton Le Heath finishing on Ashby Bath Grounds. The event which is ideally placed for pre-spring marathon distance runners and in 2014 was voted March’s best race, now attracts recreational and competitive runners alike from all across the country. There will be up to 1,500 runners taking part on the day. The Aldi Ashby 20 is very much a community event. Over the past 5 years approximately £10,000 has been raised for local charities and organisations. The event has close links with Aldi who are the main sponsor. It also brings money to local business including shops, restaurants and hotels.

Why not come and support the runners, soak up the atmosphere or cheer on the children involved in the fun run You can come and spectate and cheer the runners on during the race. Popular spots are Packington, Swepstone and Heather. Watch and be inspired by the finishers at the bathgrounds. There will be hot food and drink available to purchase at our race village on the bathgrounds for you to refuel. There will also be a children’s fun run held on the bathgrounds which will be organised by Ivanhoe Robins. This is a great opportunity for your children to get active, feel involved and experience fun and the sense of achievement running brings.

We want your day to run smoothly! Details of the route and road closures

ROAD CLOSURES One-way operation will be in place for the majority of the race route. Expect some delays and plan accordingly. Vehicles will not be allowed along the side the runners are on. The map indicates the direction of the runners. The one way system will therefore be in a clockwise direction of the route. Marshals will use their discretion to allow residents in and out, always taking safety of runners and vehicles into account. You will not be able to use the roads below in the direction specified, but they will be open in the opposite direction. Two short sections will be fully closed for 10 mins. 3-way traffic lights will operate from 0900 – 1330 at Gallows Lane/Swepstone Road junction. Diversions are in place to avoid Galllows Lane (passing Springs) via Measham, and from Odstone to Heather to get you safely beyond Heather Main St.

Underground They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below?

Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. 16

By Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings!

Well here we are facing into another New Year and another bout of those winter blues. Many of you will be doing your best to keep them at bay by sitting with a lovely hot cuppa thumbing through holiday brochures or surfing online. Ashby Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The Museum volunteers are already involved in the 2017 Season. We have two new volunteers and one returning - welcome again to Marjorie Hampson! We would be delighted to recruit more, of course - our door is always open to those who could spend a couple of hours once a fortnight. WeÂ are looking forward, with great interest, to the development of Ashbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cultural Quarterâ&#x20AC;? based around the Library, Venture Theatre, Hood Park Leisure Centre and, of course, the Museum. We are also working with Pudding Bag Productions, Ashby Tourist Information Centre, St. Helenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church and the Town Council to develop a leaflet linked to the exciting TownÂ Digital Trail, already available through smart phones etc.Â A reminder that, if you are looking for presents with a local theme, our Museum Shop provides booklets, postcards, notelets, old prints, mugs, tea towelsÂ and other objects at very reasonable prices. Gresley Male Voice Choir At The Palace, Ibstock

The Gresley Male Voice Choir will be in concert at the Palace on Saturday 11th March. This will be the ﬁrst time that this award -winning, Swadlincote-based choir have performed at the Ibstock High Street venue. RASPBERRY AND VANILLA

panna cotta

YOU WILL NEED: 75g fresh raspberries, pureed

S E RV

Ready ES 4 in plus o 1 hour, vernig chillin ht g

1 sheet leaf gelatine

PANNA COTTA 600ml double cream

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 pared strips lemon rind

50g caster sugar

2 sheets leaf gelatine

Few drops pink food colouring

TO SERVE 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally

Fresh raspberries

These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!

GET STARTED the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set. 5. Antibiotics Awareness Antibiotics are a group of medicines that are used to treat infections caused by germs (bacteria and certain parasites). They do not work against infections that are caused by viruses for example, the common cold, ‘flu and many coughs. Unfortunately antibiotics are losing their effectiveness at an increasing rate, mainly because of overuse when they aren’t really needed. Do you really need them? People can regularly be heard saying “I need to get some antibiotics” but often they won’t help you at all. What’s needed is some rest, drinking plenty of fluids and self-managing your symptoms such as fever with paracetamol, and usually you will recover. You can also see your local pharmacist for advice or over the counter medication. The CRP test pilot To slow down the development of antibiotic resistance, it is important to use antibiotics in the

right way and not to overprescribe them. So at the surgery we are currently running a pilot with a CRP machine for patients with chest infections. This machine measures a chemical in the blood and advises within 15 minutes whether antibiotics will help or not. In brief, our clinicians use their clinical judgement as to whether or not antibiotics are needed. But as medicine is not an exact science a way of helping decide if they are needed is welcome. And please remember that if your symptoms don’t improve you should always contact the surgery again.

Coalville Library is launching its brand new Construction Club on Satu rday 4th February 10.30am to 12noon . SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST

Dilk Wood, the Children’s Wood A major project for 2017 is the purchase of 4.7 acre Smock Wood which is next to Hough Mill. It will be renamed Dilk Wood after a recently deceased village community activist. We intend developing it as a children’s wood. It will be very different to the usual village playground. The focus will be on encouraging natural woodland exploration and fun. A bird hide and other facilities will help children learn about nature and the industrial history of the site. More than 600 people have supported the project via surveys and we have already received over £1,600 in donations. We have started submitting grant applications and hope to have funding in place by the middle of the year.
