BODY MATTERS
Sports massage There are many benefits to sports massage improved flexibility, reduced risk of injury, pain reduction and injury rehabilitation. Sports massage can be for everyone not just athletes. But there are several things to consider before your appointment: Pre-treatment Ask about the qualifications of your Sports Massage Therapist. How long they have been practicing? Have they completed a recognised course of training? Make sure you are well hydrated as your muscles and soft tissue respond better. Also don’t eat a heavy meal beforehand as this may be uncomfortable. Avoid vigorous sports massage prior to any strenuous exercise. Try to leave it 3-4 days as you may experience some muscle soreness immediately after a massage. The treatment Be prepared for postural assessment, moving around and also some homework! The homework is just as

important as the massage itself and the therapist will be able to tell if you have been a good student! Expect to feel some discomfort but you should never be in pain. After the treatment Expect some post massage soreness - this is normal. This will often persist for up to 48 hours and following this you should feel the difference. A warm bath is a good post management activity. If you feel you would benefit from a Sports Massage please call ProPhysio on 01530 588557 or visit the website for more information www. prophysiomidlands.co.uk Marie Kelleher VTCT Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy

A WALK IN THE FOREST
New Year
Challenge!
It’ss that time again when we nter into the coming year full en off new resolutions and good ntentions. Last year The in elegraph reported that the Te op 2 new year’s resolutions to were to exercise more and to w ose weight. Walking is often lo overlooked but it is easy, costs o nothing, and is a brilliant way n to become fitter and healthier. It is also good for h yyour mental health, helping you clear your mind l d and reconnect to the natural world. Whether you are a seasoned walker or someone who has slipped out of the habit of making time for regular exercise now is a wonderful time to set some goals and give yourself a walking challenge for 2018. Here are just a few ideas to help with that first step towards a fitter, more active year.
Charityy Walks
Taking on th he challenge of a charity walk is a wonderful way to get yourself motivated and your legs moving! Last September the Ashby Life team completed the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge raising over £900 for Charity Link. We had a brilliant day and finished the walk tired but happy and I’m sure we’d all agree that after all the training and the walk itself our fitness levels were much higher than earlier in the year. Find out about this year’s 3 Peaks Challenge online at charity-link.org (click on Get Inv Involved). If you jusst can’t wait until Se eptember to co omplete your ch hallenge (or fancy so omething a little sh horter) then how ab bout the W Woodhouse May Day Challenge? Taaking place on Monday 7th May the entrance fee for this 13 mile walk includes refreshments en route and a hot lunch - the money

raised supports local charities. Find out more at www.woodhouse-may-daychallenge.co.uk. Top tip for those undertaking a challenge walk is to plan training well in advance. Vanessa and I did a weekly walk together starting about 10 weeks before the event and gradually increasing the distance every week.
Long Distance Walks
Pe erhaps you are already a regular walker and jusst want a new challenge for 2018 - how about completing one of our long (or medium) distance routes? The National Forest Way is a 75 mile route that starts at Beacon Hill in the Charnwood Forest and d finishes by the National Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas. It breaks down neatly into 12 sections so you could complete one each h month. Instructions for each secttion are available to down nloaad from www.nationalforestway.co.uk.
Start Small, Keep Motivated
Maybe you’re not that much of a walker and don’t really know how to start? Set yourself some small achievable goals and gradually increase but make sure you are having fun too! How about buying a walks book (the Tourist Info in Ashby have a good selection) and exploring one walk from it each month - you can start with the shortest and work your way up to the longest. Or you could join up with friends or family to do the walk from this magazine each month. If you are a bit unsure then consider joining a walking group. Groups are a good way to make new friends and explore new places and most offer walks of varying distances - check www.ramblers.org.uk for details of local groups.
Happy walking in 2018!

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
New Year Goals Happy New Year everyone.....this is the time of the year when you are determined to make changes in your life and most importantly stick to them. Nine times out of ten your goals are forgotten by the end of the month due to ‘life getting in the way.’ So what can you do to avoid this happening? Wouldn’t it be great if you could stick at and actually achieve your New Year goals? Here are some tips to help you do just that: 1. Make sure your goal is as specific and as clear as possible. This will avoid any indecisiveness or uncertainty about what you want to achieve..... and will keep you focussed, avoiding any ‘cluttered’ thinking. 2. Make sure you measure the progress of your goal. If your goal is to lose weight, weigh yourself weekly and reward your progress e.g. treat yourself to some new clothes. 3. Make sure your goal is achievable otherwise you will lose motivation and commitment will diminish.
4. Make sure your goal is realistic. Unrealistic goals lead to disappointment, frustration and probably feeling worse than you did before. 5. Always have a time frame to your goal.....there must be a start and an end point to your goal, with ‘milestones’ in between, where you can reward your progress.
Go on, stick at it, you can achieve anything you want!! Mark Padgett www.mppersonaltraining.co.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN
A gift to last Frequently when I am designing a garden for a client they will say that a particular plant has to be kept because it was a gift from someone special, or that it was chosen to celebrate an anniversary or occasion. There are hundreds of plants with a girl’s name. Just look up rose and then add a name such as Rose ‘Grace’ or ‘Charlotte’ to see if you are in luck. There are Clematis varieties which have girl’s names, such as Clematis ‘Rebecca’ or Clematis ‘Alita’. If flowers aren’t your thing, how about a lovely leafy Hosta, there is ‘Carol’ or ‘Catherine’. I was surprised to find Clematis ‘Mama Mia’ – ABBA fans will love it! There are famous males who have had plants named after them, such as the David Austin Rose called ‘Sir Walter Scott’ and ‘Charles Darwin’, ideal for the explorers amongst you. Similarly the author ’Roald Dahl’ has an exquisitely perfumed peachy coloured rose named after him. Surely such a gift would bring back happy childhood

memories of his wonderful books. On the writers theme, how about Rose ‘Bathsheba’ for the ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ fans, and ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ for Thomas Hardy enthusiasts. Perhaps a place could inspire your choice. There is Rosa ‘Lichfield Angel’ or ’Winchester Cathedral’ and ‘A Shropshire Lad’. Ramblers amongst you might like the idea of a Rose named ‘Malvern Hills or ‘The Albrighton Rambler’. Holiday destinations and fond memories may make a match with the Rose ‘Scarborough Fair’. ‘Chicago Sunrise’ and ‘California Sunshine’ are both varieties of Hemerocalis (Day Lillies). I have found a Lilly called ‘Snow Board’. Each summer the pure white petals of the flowers will be a nice reminder of ski slopes. As you can see there are many possibilities if you can spare time to research. To mark a wedding, Clematis ‘Beautiful Bride’ would I am sure be gratefully received. The Lilly which is rather sadly called ‘Broken Heart’ would possibly be less welcome. ‘Fond Memories’ or ‘For Your Eyes Only’ or ‘Freedom’ are just a few of the roses available from www.britishroses.com. Historians could possibly be found a rose to suit their interest; for example someone interested in Kings and Queens or Royal connections might opt for the David Austin Rose ‘Anne Boleyn’, or ‘Princess Anne’. I am hoping my friends will read this in time for my January birthday..... there is a yellow Rose called ‘Francesca’ for my garden!
Happy gardening!

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS
Happy New Year to all our patients! In the autumn we had a new telephone system. We want to let our patients know that the new system records all telephone conversations in and out of the surgery. These recordings may be used for training and monitoring purposes and will be subject to the same conditions of the Data Protection act as all our patient data. You will also notice that the practice telephone number is now displayed when we call you; our calls no longer show up as a withheld number which we hope will be better for our patients. There are currently shortages of lots of medication. If your usual pharmacy can’t get your medication its worth giving a few others a try as they use different suppliers and somebody else may have stocks.
We have a Patient Participation Group (PPG) here at the surgery who meet once every 6 weeks on a Wednesday evening at the surgery. The PPG group is a critical friend and also helps to raise money so the surgery can buy additional equipment for patients which isn’t funded by the NHS. The PPG is always keen to have new members and the only condition is that you must be a patient of the surgery. If you’d like to come along to a meeting and help us improve the service we give to all our patients the next meeting is Wednesday January 17th at 6pm. Just come along, no need to let us know. If you’re thinking of a career in nursing or medicine coming to the meetings is useful for when you apply to university.

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Enjoy a drink from the bar whilst watching a great film in this unique venue; one of the oldest surviving purpose-built cinemas in the country.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BOOK REVIEWS
Into the New Year
Books about awakenings and new beginnings to see you into 2018. The Power Naomi Alderman Not a new release this one, but well worth a read if you missed it back in 2016. Teenage girls across the world discover they have the power to hurt, and even kill, with just their bare hands. And they have the ability to awaken that same power in other women. Now that men are the weak ones, how will the gender balance shift? An engaging read that twists modern day happenings and examines the dark side of power. Gripping, thought-provoking and a real conversation starter, The Power is ideal for book clubs. How to be Champion: My Autobiography Sarah Millican Sarah Millican’s autobiography is like a glorious ramble through her life. The book is split into chapters with headers such as ‘Things I’ve Been Bullied For’, ‘Why I’m Not A Criminal’ and ‘My Love Of Stationery’. It’s part autobiography and part selfhelp guide. Nothing is off limits, so it’s probably not the book for you if you’re not keen on swear words or reading about bodily functions. However, if you want a book that’ll make you feel good about yourself and is snort-your-tea-out-of-your-nose-funny, buy it now. The Art of Hiding Amanda Prowse Nina seems to have the perfect life, but it soon starts to unravel when her husband is killed in a car crash. Left with two children to care for, a mountain of debt, and the growing realisation that her husband wasn’t all he seemed, Nina has to fight to rebuild a life for herself and her family. An enjoyable easy read – perfect for long winter’s nights.

History of Wolves Emily Fridlund 14 year old Linda lives in an ex-commune out in the woods. Lonely, socially-inexperienced and left to her own devices by her parents, Linda craves friends and a sense of belonging. When a new family moves nearby, she befriends the young mother and regularly babysits the four year old child. But she soon discovers that all is not right. The choices Linda has to make to keep her new found family could have tragic consequences. Compelling reading. Mrs Osmond John Banville Banville picks up the story of Isabel Osmond (née Archer) from where we left her in the classic The Portrait of a Lady. While this novel will likely appeal most to fans of Henry James’s work, Banville retells enough of the original story for Mrs Osmond to work as a stand-alone piece. Upon learning of her husband’s betrayal, Isabel has journeyed to London, leaving him behind in Italy. Away from her husband and reunited with her friends, Isabel starts to rediscover her desire for independence. Lively characters, elegant prose and engaging dialogue combine to make this a very enjoyable read. Me. You. A Diary Dawn French This book combines writing your own diary with taking a peek into Dawn French’s. She shares her thoughts each month, along with various insights into her life, and invites you to do the same. The idea is that, by the end of the year, you’ll have a ‘fatter, scruffier book that is written by me but totally personalised by you.’ With various writing prompts, this book makes keeping a diary altogether easier. The perfect start to the new year.
