Adopt the correct PRICE Strategy

People are sustaining acute injuries everyday while participating in sports or carrying out regular activities in their lives. An acute injury is one when there is a specific cause of injury such as a twisted joint, a pulled muscle, a sprained ligament or a collision and is usually associated with swelling, pain and bleeding. Those more serious injuries require immediate first aid and expert medical attention. However, the less serious acute injuries can usually, in the early phase, be treated safely at home using the PRICE principle.

PROTECTION REST ICE COMPRESSION ELEVATION PRICE will help to control the amount of swelling, prevent further injury and reduce pain and, if used in the first 48-72 hours after the injury, can have a dramatic effect on reducing healing time and enabling a quicker recovery. Protection Stop immediately doing the activity that caused the injury in the first instance. Depending on the injured area, find something to support it - whether it be a sling for a shoulder, a brace for a knee or ankle or the use of crutches if weight bearing on a limb is too painful. Supportive bandaging can be useful also. Rest In order to start the process of healing, the injured area needs to be off loaded and rested to be given the chance to heal without further damage, as pain subsides and the gradual phased return of activity returns. Ice This can be effective in limiting the amount of

bleeding and inflammation and involves applying ice for 20 minutes at a time to the area. Soft ice packs, crushed ice in a bag, or a bag of frozen peas are ideal as they mould to the contours of the injured area. Apply a damp cloth around the ice pack to prevent an ice burn. Do not put ice directly over a cut or contusion that needs medical attention. Compression When the ice pack is removed a compression bandage or tubigrip can be used to support the damaged structure and form a mechanical barrier to minimise swelling. Cohesive wraps and elastic bandages are ideal for this but require some care with application. Elevation In the immediate post injury stage, elevation will reduce the amount of blood flow to the area. In the case of a lower limb injury, putting the feet up on pillows to elevate them can help. By adopting the PRICE principle you will give your body a much better chance for optimal healing. Should you require any further assistance, seek the advice of a physiotherapist who can advise you more specifically on your post injury management. Twycross Zoo Conservation Club

Twycross Zoo Conservation Club runs every Saturday morning for 6 weeks starting from 4th March. It’s open for 8 to 12 year olds and helps to provide children with more of an understanding of why animals are endangered and how we can all help to protect them. Activities include making discovery toys for the animals, cleaning out enclosures, trails, crafts, quizzes and more. See twycrosszoo.org for details and to book.

Brickish Weekend Brickish Weekend at the National Space Centre on Saturday 18th and Saturday 19th March will have one of the largest displays of LEGO ever created in the UK. Home Visiting A reminder of our home visiting policy

Our team is dedicated to providing the best possible care but seeing a patient at home rather than in the surgery has a lot of disadvantages. Facilities at home can never be as good as at the surgery and travelling takes up a lot of time which we would rather spend with patients. (Our doctors typically consult with at least 8 patients in the time it takes to do a single home visit.)

Many of our home visits are now carried out by our Emergency Care Practitioners, Hayley and Steve or our Nurse Jill. In addition we sometimes ask the Acute Visiting Service (AVS) to visit on our behalf. This is a service set up for local doctors to use if they are particularly busy and canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t safely do a visit themselves. They will liaise closely with our doctors so that we are aware of the outcome of the visit.

For these reasons the final decision on whether to visit at home rests with the doctor and the doctor will ask you questions about your situation to help them make this decision.

We thank all our patients for respecting our cliniciansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; decisions on home visits.

If you feel that you, or a relative or friend, needs a home visit please call the surgery before 10am if possible. The doctor will usually telephone before visiting to collect information and decide if a visit is clinically necessary.

Hedge

There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden, and it is difficult to beat a hedge. Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and can even have pretty flowers - and now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge. First, prepare the area by forking the soil over thoroughly and remove large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. This also helps to break up any compaction and to aerate the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. You should fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost if the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, and at the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. Don’t plant right up against an existing fence, as the plants won’t grow well. At this time of year you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. If using pot-grown plants, water them thoroughly and then carefully remove each plant from its pot. If the roots are tightly packed, tease them out firmly before planting. If you’re using bare-root plants, plant them immediately. It is essential to plant and space the plants correctly, to both achieve the desired effect and ensure the plants establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil at the same depth as it was in the pot; for bare-root plants only the roots should be beneath the soil. Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants should generally be spaced about 30-45cm apart. For a thicker or denser hedge, plant two parallel rows, each with a 45cm spacing between the plants, but positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and so allow the plants to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants use small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. Keep the hedge well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period.

CARAMELISED ONION AND GOATS’ CHEESE

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. YOU WILL NEED: 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle

2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced

2 tsp brown sugar

2 x 145g packets pizza base mix

2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs

2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced

5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TOP TIP Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

GET STARTED

1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and

add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. 2. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. 3. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn 40

up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes.

4. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

A WALK IN THE FOREST

Ticknall Tramway Tunnel

and Limeyards This is a brilliant walk to take the kids on as it has a tunnel plus caves, rocky outcrops and ponds to explore along the route. I would recommend taking torches - the tunnel is lit by shafts and you can see the end but it can be slippery and is uneven underfoot. For those who aren’t surefooted but would still like to enjoy the walk there is an above ground option to avoid the tunnel itself. Allow around an hour for the walk. If you fancy refreshments afterwards The Wheel in Ticknall does excellent meals (booking is advisable) and the village shop and tea rooms offer hot drinks, cake and light refreshments. The walk starts from Ticknall Village Hall car park which is situated just off Ingleby Lane in Ticknall. The postcode for sat nav users is DE73 7JW.

Leave the car park by the gate in the corner which leads back out onto Ingleby Lane. Cross over the lane and turn right to walk downhill towards the village. After a short distance cross the main road, opposite The Wheel (1), and then turn left for a short distance before turning right into Banton’s Lane by a wooden footpath sign. Continue through the small gate at the end of the lane and follow the footpath arrows to bear right across the field. You will pass through an open gateway and then a new wooden gate (2). Almost immediately after this gate turn right to pass through a second small gate which leads you down a slope to the old tramway. Turn sharp right and you will see the entrance to the Ticknall Tramway Tunnel ahead of you (3). Built in 1805, the tunnel was part of the tramway linking the limeworks at Ticknall with the Ashby Canal and was closed in 1915. *Those who wish to avoid going through the tunnel itself should turn left after the new gate, follow the path to reach and cross over the main drive of Calke Abbey, and then look for a stile on the far side of the drive which will lead them down to the other end of the tunnel. *

After emerging from the tunnel, you enter Ticknall Limeyards, a site of special scientific interest. This path always makes me think of Lord of the Rings as you can definitely imagine hobbits, elves and goblins living among the ferns, rocks and hanging creepers! Keep straight ahead down the track, following the green National Trust arrows, and ignoring any paths off to the side. You will pass over a small metal bridge (4) with an information board off to the left of it and a little further on you cross over a beautifully restored old stone bridge (5). Go through a wooden gate and then underneath a stone archway (6) before arriving at a narrow gap by a rocky outcrop with a stile on your left. Cross the stile to emerge onto a grassy area with ponds on your left hand side. You may like to make a small diversion to explore the ponds before leaving over the stile on the far side of this area. After damp weather there is a small waterfall which cascades down the rocks on your right just after the stile - in the winter when it freezes it is particularly beautiful.

After a short way you join a wide track. Turn left and follow the track down to reach the main road through Ticknall. Turn left along the road, and continue along the pavement, crossing over where the path on the left ends, until you pass under the bridge just before the main entrance to Calke Abbey. Immediately opposite this entrance, take the path up the grassy area on your right up to a gap beside a gate which leads onto the end of Chapel Lane. Turn left to go through the gate and then walk along Chapel Lane to arrive back onto Ingleby Lane. The gate leading into Ticknall Village Hall car park is now immediately ahead of you.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

Ashby Museum’s We have been delighted with the response to our recent requests for volunteers to work at our town museum. We welcome Sarah Roberts, Dennis Bradley and Margaret Coley to our team of front-of-house custodians and Julie Starkey, who will be helping with research. Of course we will be very pleased to expand the team even further so do get in touch if you can offer two hours a fortnight. To accompany the Friends’ talk in March, there will be a display in the Loudoun Gallery featuring the Museum’s collection of timepieces by local makers, supplemented by photographs from other sources. Thanks to the skills of the County Record Office conservator, and the financial support of the East Midlands Museums Service, we have had the Great and Little

Friends of Ashby Museum On Wednesday March 15th at 2 p.m. Ivan Hallam will give a talk on ‘Time in a Rural Town and Village’ at the Museum. He will focus on the work of local clock and watchmakers, such as William Measures, William Salisbury, Samuel Deacon and Samuel Kirk Peplow. The cost is £3, which will include tea/coffee and biscuits.
