As always there are loads of events happening in and around Ashby this month (see our What’s On pages and Community Board) but on pages 12 and 13 we also have our pick of local Halloween family fun including spooky walks in the woods, carving pumpkins or even broomstick training!

Autumn approaches and as the dark nights begin to close in those that suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, will notice a gradual return of their symptoms.

SAD is a form of depression, winter depression to be more specific. The symptoms of SAD are the same as depression. Clients report a low mood along with a general reluctance to take part in activities, an increase in appetite and difficulty with getting up in the morning. SAD has a real physiological basis. Due to the lack of daylight in winter, changes occur in the level of production of the hormones melatonin and serotonin and there are also changes to the internal body clock. So, what can you do if you suffer from SAD, or if you simply wish to feel better during the dark winter months? Stay active if at all possible; a walk during daylight hours can dramatically improve your mood. Try to reduce stress, take up a new hobby

to keep your mind active. Light therapy can also help to regulate your hormones and therefore your mood. Th he perfect spot for a day ou ut - this walk takes around an our and a half but you could ho easily extend that to a whole day out. Bradgate Park has a pretty stream, deer roaming p frree, picnic spots and some great landmarks - perfect for g a family half term outing and with the car park costing just £3 for the day it won’t break the bank either.r The park is a popular spot so expect it to be busy, especially at weekends. Dogs e must be kept on lead in the he lower sections of the park and you may encounterr deer at any point in the park. If you want refreshments there are tea m rooms by the car park, in the village la and also close to the ruins. Our walk starts from the Newtown Linford entrance to Bradgate Park, which is about 20 minutes drive from Ashby in the Leicester direction. The postcode for Sat Nav users is LE6 0HB.

Don’t leave the car park by the main gate, instead turn t lleft ft and d follow follll the fence around for about 100 yds to a smaller, wooden gate (1). Pass through this gate te and then another one immediately after it. Take e the stoney path, marked as a horse track, and follow it through l a gap in the wall after which it splits. s. Keep left and continue on the horse track as it goes around the outer edge of the park with the pa park wall visible off to your left. After a while you will see a gate in the wall leading out of the park off to yourr left and, at the same

time, on your right there is a hill with a coppice on top continue on the horse e track and soon you will be able to see the Yeomanry War Memorial (2) on the he top of the next hill on your right. When h you can see it bear a right and walk steeply t y uphill to reach the memorial (take aany track you like, there arre a few). After viewing the memorial continue in the e same direction, going down the e hill and through a small gap in a stone wall (3). Follow the e short path through trees and a one archwayy and then climb the slope to reach sto c Old d John (4) w where e you can enjoy some wonderful vie ewss.

Stiill continuing ui in roughly the same direction, of take the wide d grassy path down the far side o he hill after Old John then, as you come to the th h ocks on yo your right near the bottom, bear right ro g onto a track which will quickly join a hard path. a Almost ass soon as you join this path you need to A bear off it onto a smaller grass track which bea right o ic clearly leads ad around the left of a large coppice in the distance. n In the bottom of the dip you will pass a National ot Forest Way Wa marker post - follow the arrow and n pass the coppice p with the stone wall on your right. ht You should n now be able to see the ruins of Bradgate g House (5) ahead of you. Pass by a wide gap p in a stone wall w and then, on reaching the ruins, turn right aalong the main tarmac ma drive that runs through o the park. As you follow the drive back to l the h car park (about ¾ mile) the pretty River Lin runs off to your left and you may well see deer grazing either on the banks..

Knife crime includes: - carrying a knife - trying to buy a knife if you are under 18 threatening someone with a knife • owning a banned knife - injuring or fatally wounding somebody with a knife - intent to injure or harm somebody with a knife - a robbery or burglary where a knife was carried as a weapon

If someone is injured or killed by a knife while you are present you too could be prosecuted.

What is Leicestershire Police doing to tackle knife crime? We’ve launched our “Lives Not Knives” campaign to drive home the message of the devastating consequences knife crime can have and what could happen if you are caught carrying a weapon.

What’s the law?

Setting aside the damage inflicted by a knife on a life, the potential legal consequences for those who carry, and use a knife in acts of violence, are severe. For simply carrying a knife in a public place the maximum penalty if convicted is four years in prison. For offences when a knife is used on another person or in the commission of a crime, the punishments become even more life-changing.

The campaign will involve a knife amnesty with a series of amnesty bins being placed in six police stations for people to dispose of bladed weapons anonymously. For further information, go to: leics.police.uk/knifecrime

Facilitating Walkersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Access

Walking is one of the most popular leisure activities in the UK. About 13,500 people walk through our woodlands each year. We frequently receive feedback from walkers that using our sites is so enjoyable because the paths are well maintained.

Nurturing Woodlands Walk

Left to their own devicces woodlands rapidly become inaccessible. Our volunteers prune trees and shrubs, fell dead trees, cut back brambles and control bracken. We also rejuvenate the gorse bushes in the Gorse Field, split and transplant snowdrops, create log piles for insects and maintain ponds as wildlife havens.

Heritage Conservation

What makes us different to wildlife conservation groups is that we also have a heritage conservation role. Projects include painting coal mine wheels, conserving a 19th century winding engine, repairing a horse gin and looking after the remnants of former coal mine and railway buildings.

Comradeship

Perhaps the most important element of our team is that our volunteers enjoy working together, swapping tales during the coffee break and sharing a joke. We are fortunate to have great volunteers, but work opportunities always exceeds our capacity. A few more helpers would make a big difference, so come along and see what we do.

Warning Zone This month’s local spotlight charity is one with a difference focusing on supporting children within Leicestershire and the prevention of accidents and injuries. You may not have heard of Warning Zone but here’s all you need to know…. First launched in October 2006, Warning Zone is an exciting, interactive centre in the East Midlands offering schools and other organisations in our society a high quality, high impact “Learning for Life” resource covering Road, Fire, Water, Internet, Building Site and Railway Safety. To date, over 40,000 children have benefitted from the Warning Zone Experience. Each year in England & Wales, around 300 children under 15 die from accidental injury, 120,000 need extensive treatment for injuries and approx. 10,000 suffer a permanent disability (Child Accident Prevention Trust). Additionally the involvement of young people in anti-social behaviour and offending also continues to cause concern in all our communities. The primary aim of Warning Zone is to support the social and personal development of children (and other vulnerable groups) through the teaching of vital life skills. This is a positive step towards the prevention of avoidable injury and death, additionally, at 10 years of age, children are beginning to make decisions that not only affect their safety but their actions can also affect the lives of other people. Our young visitors learn that they are responsible for their actions under criminal law and can be arrested for unlawful behaviour and acquire a criminal record. Two years ago Warning Zone successfully launched their new E-safety zone which again follows the principal of interactive learning. It has been designed as a retro fairground and delivers serious protection messages again in a fun and interactive way. Here they discuss important aspects of Internet Safety Including Online Grooming, Phishing, Cyber Bullying, Risks when Sharing Images, the protection of Personal Information and the Safe Use of Social Media and Gaming Sites. They also talk to the children about having a Trusted Adult. In the last academic year they had almost 10,000

children book in for a full days visit with their Primary Schools. Warning Zone continue to branch out into new areas and are now planning to take a new Online Project on the road to visit colleges and deliver to Year 9 students. It will continue the Warning Zone approach of delivering powerful messages in surprising and atmospheric ways. Warning Zone is a Charity and can only run with the help of their large team of Volunteer Guides, who guide small groups of children around our interactive zones. Ibstock Surgery Community Garden

Launch day – Wednesday 1st November at 11am. All welcome to come along and help start our community garden. Tea and cake provided for volunteers! Do as much or as little as you can.

I wrote about a gardening club some months ago and we are now ready to start the garden. We have had a very simple garden designed for us which has the potential to grow (excuse the pun!). We are going to start by planting some fruit trees and a few raised beds with vegetables (and maybe some flowers). Once these become established the fruit and vegetables will be given away to the community. Once we get up and running we would like to add to the garden and hope that volunteers will help take it forward in whatever direction they would like. This might be flowers, vegetables, shrubs, a sensory garden – or perhaps all of these or even something completely different, we’re very flexible. We are planning to get some benches and tables so that people can sit and enjoy the garden too.

We hope this will turn into a garden for the whole community to enjoy. On launch day: We are going to be planting our first fruit trees and raised beds. Do as much as you are able, it doesn’t matter. Meet new people and make new friends. Have some tea and cake with us. The doctors and some of the staff will be helping over lunch time. Please bring your own equipment as we don’t have any of our own yet. If you’d like to come and join in please let our Reception know on 01530 263467. We’ll be going ahead come rain or shine!

Grab a tree for free 2017 in the National Forest and beyond

Could you help brighten up your garden, street and district by planting a free tree this year? North West Leicestershire District Council is once again working in partnership with the National Forest Company and HK Wentworth to off ffer f the Free Tree Scheme in an eff ffort f to make our district even greener. Residents of North West Leicestershire can choose two trees from four varieties and can also apply to the “Hedge Fund” to order up to 30 metres of hedging.

Holly (ilex aquifolium)

The common holly grows as a shrub or tree and has bright red berries and shiny leaves. The leaves are spiny and have a waxy texture. Holly is evergreen and will grow almost anywhere, including in difficult conditions such as waterlogged or chalky ground. In autumn, leaves turn a rich red colour.

Cherry Plum (prunus cerasifera)

Masses of pure white flowers smother the branches in early March before the leaves appear. This is followed in autumn by tasty red or yellow, spherical cherry plums that grown on mature plants. The cherry plum is a popular ornamental tree for garden and landscaping use.

Hazel (corylus avellana)

One of the smallest native tree species, hazel grows more like a shrub than a tree, only reaching approximately 20 feet in height when mature. Its leaves are comparatively large and round with a distinctive point. The leaves are slightly hairy to the touch and have a wrinkled appearance when fully out.

Whitebeam (sorbus aria)

Is a medium-sized deciduous tree, rather upright when young, with dark green leaves, white-felted beneath, and clusters of white flowers in spring, followed by red berries in early autumn.

A fast growing, deciduous hedging plant. It heralds the arrival of spring, has an abundant and spectacular display of white scented blossom and it develops glossy red haws in autumn. It grows to 15 metres but it can be trimmed after flowering or in the autumn to keep it smaller.

Community garden Locally there are several garden projects involving volunteers and charities. At the top of Market Street the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch are making a splendid job of refurbishing a patch of garden. They have made gravel and terraced framework for plants. On the opposite side just across from the Rotary project, the ladies of the WI have been maintaining the planting areas by the seating. However, let me tell you about a bigger scale project that our local Ibstock neighbours have been working on. The Ibstock Community Garden was set up in 2011. Land was restored which had been derelict for over 20 years. A new productive garden was made where people of all ages could come and grow food together. The main growing space was cleverly set out in a concentric circle design with 48 plots of various sizes. Groups or individuals could take on a free plot to grow food or herbs for themselves or the community. Presently there are 4 plots available for any willing volunteers. The garden has an outer ring of espalier pear trees neatly tied and pruned which produced a bumper autumn harvest. There is an apple orchard too and of course a large composting area. There is a blue painted cart which is used as a raised planting bed that

Community tea and cake sales together with the opportunity to buy the local grown produce puts funds back in to the garden. As an extension of this community garden the most recent scheme has been the under 5’s play area. Here Ibstock in Bloom planted impressive perennial and grass beds and the students of the Community College made a large piece of outside art, proudly displayed on the wall. Ibstock has a third community space which is earmarked as an outdoor recreation place for older children. It will hopefully be developed when local council funds and details are decided. October Museum News The Museum is looking for groups or individuals to mount temporary exhibitions in the Loudoun Gallery next year. Normally these last for two months and can be on any topic. We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested. In the past we have had good displays from the Scouts and Guides, church groups, a local photographer and the hockey club. The Museum has just acquired equipment capable of digitising glass plate negatives and acetate negatives, up to maximum 10” x 8” in size (approx. 24.5 x 20.3cm). Our Archival Department is happy for you to bring in any glass plate negatives or acetate negatives you may have which refer to Ashby’s history and could be of interest to the town and its people. We would then scan them and give you a digital copy. In return we will retain a copy for our archives. Who knows what hidden gems may lurk in your attic or at the back of a drawer. Puddings

MAKES 6 Ready in 1hr 30 m ins

Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream. YOU WILL NEED: l

3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 175g caster sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 125g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder, sifted 1 tbsp fresh orange juice 2 tsp orange zest Custard or cream, to serve

TOP TIP You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180Â°C, fan 160Â°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest. 3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour

in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

Falling in love isn’t an option and it’s best not to get too attached to anyone, as they’ll only die. But Tom craves an ordinary life. Beautifully written, this book is begging to be devoured in one sitting. Home Fire Kamila Shamsie After years of raising her younger siblings, Isma is free to live her own life and to start a career in America. Back in the UK, her sister, Aneeka, is struggling in a society that sees her hijab as a threat. Enter Eamonn, the son of a well-known London politician, who will have a lasting effect on both women. This reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone covers some pretty big issues, from religion, politics and extremism to love and family ties. However, Shamsie’s skilful writing means the themes never suffocate the story. A powerful book. Entrepreneurial You Dorie Clark If you’re fed up of the daily grind and fancy setting up on your own, this book might prove a good starting point. The tagline is a good indication of the content – ‘Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive’. Clark offers advice on choosing what to do, building your brand and finding people to buy from you. There are plenty of case studies to be inspired by and, unlike many other business books, it’s not too heavy a read.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in the UK. Thankfully, it’s also one of the most treatable, with 87% of women now surviving for at least five years after diagnosis. The earlier you catch it, the more treatable it is. So put down this magazine and cop a feel! It’s best to check your breasts and armpits regularly for any changes. You’re not just looking for lumps – other symptoms include discharge, pain and a change in appearance, such as dimpled skin. Most changes turn out to be nothing, but do book yourself in for a check-up if you find anything, just to be sure.

And now on to the fun stuff… From mugs to mints, there are loads of charity products out for Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year. Do read the pack to see how much is being donated though, as in some cases it’s less than 5%. Neal’s Yard Remedies is donating £1 for every Organic Roll on Deodorant (£8) bought in October. Rich in skin-loving essential oils and natural ingredients, the deodorants are very refreshing, smell divine and protect from odour for up to 24 hours. Donations are going to The Haven, a national charity offering support to people affected by breast cancer. Elemis is a long-term supporter of breast cancer charities. This year the beauty brand has released a limited edition Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. The cream has won numerous awards and has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and leave skin feeling firmer. It’s one of Elemis’s bestselling products – one Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is sold every nine seconds! The limited edition jar is being sold for £99. While the price seems steep, the normal 100ml jar is £140, so you’ll save £41, as well as helping to support Breast Cancer Care. Elemis has pledged to donate £25,000 from sales. 58

How do I CHECK my breasts?

Check all parts of your breast, your armpits and up to your collarbone for changes.

A change in size or shape

Redness or a rash on the skin and/or around the nipple

Discharge (liquid) that comes from the nipple without squeezing

A lump or thickening that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue

A change in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling (like orange skin)

Your nipple becoming inverted (pulled in) or changing its position or shape

A swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone

Constant pain in your breast or your armpit

This year they’ve launched the ghd Pink Blush Collection. The range includes a limited edition Platinum Styler (£165), Air Hairdryer (£99) and Paddle Brush (£20), with £2 to £10 being donated to Breast Cancer Now from each sale. Estée Lauder has been supporting breast cancer charities for several years, raising more than $65 million globally. Several of the Estee Lauder companies are releasing limited edition products in support of breast cancer research this year, including Bobbi Brown. The Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set includes a flattering pink cheek powder and a mini face brush. The set costs £35, with 20% of the sale price going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Jo Malone London is donating £5 from the sale of every Red Roses 100ml Cologne (£88) sold throughout the month of October. Beloved by celebs such as Sophie Dahl, Red Roses is inspired by seven different roses and has notes of violet, citrus and honey. It’s a lovely fresh fragrance and really conjures up images of summer evenings in the garden.
