Autumn has always been my favourite season so whilst the final bank holiday weekend signifies the end of the summer along with the return to school and shorter days, darker nights I don’t feel gloomy. This month’s issue is packed with community news and upcoming local events – there’s so much to look forward to for the rest of the year.
This is a particularly exciting month for the Whats Around team as we embark on our first fundraising event; Charity Link’s Leicester 3 Peaks Challenge on Sunday 24th September. Find out more about what we’ve signed up for on page 18! Wish us luck (we may need it). Happy reading!

SPOTLIGHT ON...
Calling all local parents and grandparents…
Could you help other parents in need?
This month’s spotlight on a local charity takes a closer look at a charity many of you will have heard of and explains the unique service they provide for parents in our region. Home-Start North West Leicestershire offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children in local communities. They recruit and train volunteers who are usually parents themselves, to visit families at home who have at least one child under five and offer them informal, friendly and confidential support. To help give children the best possible start in life, Home-Start North West Leicestershire supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community. They are currently funded by The Big Lottery to support families in preparing their children for school, encouraging reading and playing while helping to put boundaries into place. So how can you help? Well right now they need volunteers who have parenting experience to help these local families and hence give children a better start in life. The role will include training and ongoing support when matched. It is asked that you can offer 2 hours per week but all expenses are paid. All applicants will be subject to a DBS check at an enhanced level. The next training course starts on Thursday 28th September. If you’re interested and would like to find out more then please call 01530 411 132 and speak with either Pam or Anita. Home-Start North West Leicestershire are also looking for volunteers to assist in their crèche. The crèche is available to Mums using their post natal depression group MIMs. This 8 week structured group gives Mums suffering from this debilitating illness the opportunity to explore how they are feeling, build friendships and improve their mental health. The crèche allows them to do this knowing their children

are looked after in a safe place. Again, all applicants will be DBS checked at an enhanced level. Finally, they also need volunteers to help within their Charity Shop in Ashby. Shop floor or sorting/ steaming whichever suits you best. Lots of times/days are available so whatever you can spare would be a big help. For more details on all of these volunteering opportunities please call 01530 411 121 or email anita@homestartnwl.co.uk

SCARECROW FESTIVAL
Heather Scarecrow Festivall the 2017 winnners
This year’s Heather Scarecrow Festival was another huge success from the sheer number of scarecrows involved, the variety, the quality of the displays, the tongue in cheek humour of many and the way the whole village came together to proudly show all the crowds of visitors just why you should visit year after year. All this despite the constant threat of a downpour (yes, we got caught in one of those). The winners have now been announced and we’re glad to see our own personal favourites were up there in the top five! What about yours? SPOTLIGHT ON...
Our Leicestershire
3 Peaks Challenge!
Earlier this year we decided as a team that we would find a local fundraising event to tackle together. The intention was to show support for one of the many smaller local charities we showcase each month in the magazine by raising the maximum amount of money we can to help their cause but also to find the perfect event to test our strength, stamina and team skills. There were so many to choose from – this year alone we have covered Help for Heroes, Measham Community Library, Age UK, People Express, Alex’s Wish and many more invaluable local charities working tirelessly within our community. In May we told you all about a wonderful local organisation called Charity Link and the work they do impressed us so much we decided to tackle their upcoming event; the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge. To recap, Charity Link works to improve the lives of people in poverty, hardship or crisis across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire. Funds raised are used to provide everyday items that can make a massive difference to people’s lives, items such as beds, clothing, cookers, mobility equipment and visual aids and also to provide food in emergencies. Charity Link offers this support to individuals in need across our entire community. This includes elderly and disabled people, the victims of domestic violence, those with a chronic illness or mental health issue and vulnerable families struggling to make ends meet.
The challenge itself takes place on Sunday 24th September and involves a 16.5mile trek across fields, woodlands and even quarries. The walk takes in the two highest peaks in Leicestershire – Beacon Hill (814ft) and Bardon Hill (912ft), along with the famous Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, plus a few other hills along the way (including Billa Barra). With a target completion time of 6 to 7 hours we will be pushing ourselves to the limit. Training has begun in earnest….. Our aim is to raise as much money as we can to support this amazing charity. If you would like to sponsor us then please visit our JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ashbylife. Every penny helps so no matter how small your donation it will be gratefully received. We will keep you posted on our training and our progress on the day via our Facebook page so if you’re not already, remember to follow us on www.facebook.com/whatsaround.
Wish us luck!!! If you’d like to learn more about Charity Link and all they do then visit www.charity-link.org If we’ve inspired you to tackle Leicester’s 3 Peaks yourself and you want to sign up to join us on the big day then contact Rachel Markham at rachel.markham@charitylink.org or download the registration form on the website.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Bent VC was a courageous soldier and leader of men whose valour during the Great War deserves greater recognition than it has received to date. He was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, yet was educated at Ashby-de-la-Zouch Grammar School. After enlisting as a Private at the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914, Bent showed such talent and leadership that by the time of his VC action on October 1st 1917 he was one of the youngest soldiers to hold the rank of (Temporary) Lt-Col in The Leicestershire Regiment, known affectionately as the “Royal Tigers”. Finally, LtCol Bent showed such outstanding gallantry in leading his men that he was awarded a posthumous VC. He was only 26 years old when he was killed leading a charge after shouting, “Come on The Tigers!” Ashby Museum is publishing a book on the centenary of his death on 1st October, to coincide with the laying of a VC Paving Stone behind the Town War Memorial that Sunday. A temporary exhibition at the Museum will run from mid September until mid November. The Museum will be holding its Annual General

IN YOUR GARDEN
Your favourite colour
By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360
My suggestion is to choose a single colour, your favourite colour probably, and make that the theme of your garden. This one colour concept was first made popular by garden designer and writer Vita Sackville West in the 1930s.
sometimes had white marbling or variegation. She used white blossoming Almond trees for structure at the centre of the garden, and also lots of white Roses, Delphiniums, Veronica, Artemissia and Gypsophilia.
Vita made a famous white garden at Sissinghurst, in Kent, which is now open to the public through the National Trust. She divided acres of gardens into rooms by planting hedges and having walls to create separate spaces. The flowers were only white, whilst the foliage was green or grey, and
Closer to home, the white garden created at Coughton Court in Warwickshire shows what might be achieved in an average sized garden with a single colour.

Alternatively, the rhythmical repetition of flowering plants in shades of blues against the monotone green of the grass and smart hedges would be truly stunning. A lively red or orange scheme may be more your thing, however these colours are generally difficult to grow in a shady space. A compromise may be for such hot colours to be in a sunny south facing border. As with all colour options, you can extend the season of flowering by planting spring or autumn bulbs as part of your planting plan. Using a single colour emphasises the form, shape and textural quality of the plant. A restful and unfussy garden can be achieved by only using green and banishing any other colour, and even any flowers. Both traditional and modern spaces can be created with just green hedges. A limited pallet of colour and plant can be crafted in a way to give different styles and atmospheres. A little careful planning is all that is needed.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
