Ami’s Totally BOOK-ish Review

Ami’s

If you’ve come into Totally Book•ish and told me you enjoy mystery, it’s very likely that I’ve recommended Long Bright River to you. Now in paperback, this story is part mystery, part sisterbond, and part social justice.

Mickey and her sister Casey grow up with an absent father and a drugaddicted mother. As they mature into adults, the sisters take diff erent paths in response to their dysfunctional childhood. Mickey becomes a straight and narrow police offi cer, raising her son on her own. Casey, however, is an addict living on the streets.

When Casey disappears during a string of serial murders in the city, Mickey becomes obsessed with fi nding both her estranged sister and the killer.

This is not a fl uff y tale. It is a compassionate Review

telling of some very present issues: drug abuse, broken relationships, and harm reduction, and Liz Moore does an excellent job of taking these delicate and painful subjects and exposing the multiple sides of them without being graphic or preachy. The strength of this book though, is in the bond between these two sisters despite their opposing choices and paths.

Be forewarned, the characters may become so real, their struggles and stories so relevant, that after reading you may fi nd yourself wondering about them as you mop your fl oors or top up the gas tank.

Long Bright River is a book that will squeeze your heart, circulate in your bloodstream, and have you feeling diff erently by the last page, and at Totally Book•ish, we think those are the best kinds of books.
