Update your yard using Pavers!

- Excavation - Irrigation - Lighting - Slabs, Pavers or Wall Blocks - Plants - Garden Furniture

PAVERS Uniform pavers come in a wide range of shapes and colours. They can be used to achieve plain, linear designs as well as elaborate geometric patterns. Experiment with the colours of the pavers to enrich the overall effect.

Once you have mapped out your project calculate the surface measurements in order to determine the quantity of material needed. Before starting on any work, check local regulations to make sure that any specific features you wish to include conform to local bylaws.

SELECTING YOUR STONES

If you want to add a touch of class and distinction to your outdoor landscape, paving is a hard choice to beat. Good planning is the key to making the most of paving’s potentials. Try some of our tips and advice on selecting paving slabs, pavers and stone to help you create the perfect yard for recreation and relaxation. First step in your project is determining what your budget is going to be for your project and secondly do you have any existing structures that you’ll have to plan around or remove Some other factors you should consider when planning your project are: • Sun exposure your project area has, what plants and other materials are you planning to incorporate into the project. • Planning around existing structures that may be in your yard like a shed or a preexisting deck. • The future maintenance and upkeep for your project.

The selection should be based on three main factors: • The Look: shape, colour and texture. Slabs, blocks and pavers should blend in with their surroundings. Select materials and designs to contrast and enhance the features of your home. • The Price: The price per slab or paver will vary depending on its thickness, quality, finish, shape and size. Prices range between $1.50 and $6 per square foot. • The Use: The choice of slab, block or paver will depend on its destination and the treatment awaiting it (weight, snow shovel abuse, de-icing products, freezing, thawing, etc.). Paving Slabs Paving slabs are an ideal solution for covering a large surface with reasonably priced, quality material For creating a patio or dining areas, you can use the square or rectangular slabs which allow you to cover the most area in the least mount on cost. These slabs come in a variety of textures and colours that allow you to create some stunning effects.

WALL BLOCKS Some types of paving blocks are designed especially for building low retaining walls. Assembly techniques vary according to the manufacturer. It is important to know the height of the tallest wall in your landscape plan since this will determine the wall blocks you select. There are three types of blocks, depending on the height of the wall desired: • Blocks for low walls with minimal retaining capacity, mainly used for decorative purposes (less than 24" high) • Blocks for retaining walls less than 48" high • Blocks for retaining walls up to 60" high Once you have chosen your stone, it’s time to put your plan into action. Remember professional landscapers will be able to do certain jobs expertly, although this can involve additional and sometimes substantial costs. If your budget is limited, remember that a landscaping project can be spread over several years.

BUDGET AND CARRYING OUT THE WORK Carrying out a paved outdoor project is a considerable undertaking, you should budget for the following elements:

Tracy Loffler is the owner of Unison Yoga in Mission and has been teaching yoga since 2002. 3 Yoga Poses You Can do at Your Desk Let’s face it, we sit A LOT. Some of us even spend more hours at our desks then we do sleeping in our beds! And all of this sitting is not got for our bodies. Sitting for too long can cause damage to your internal organs, poor circulation and neck and back pain, to name a few. In fact, experts are now saying that “sitting is the new smoking.” Yes, it really is that bad for us. But there a couple of things you can do to minimize the damage. Get up and take a short walk around the office and remind yourself to sit at your desk with proper alignment. You can even do a few yoga poses at your desk:

Hip Stretch: stretches low back & hips Cross your right ankle over your left knee. Pull your toes toward your shins. Lean slightly forward. Hold 4 – 10 breaths.

Cat/Cow: reduces back pain Inhale and rock forward in your seat. Lift your chest and chin toward the sky. Exhale and round your back. Repeat this motion back and forth as many times as feels comfortable.

Seated Twist: creates flexibility in the spine Sit tall in your seat and twist to your right. Place your left hand on your right knee and your right hand on the back of the chair. Keep your shoulders relaxed. Hold 4 – 10 breaths. Just a few small movements throughout the day can have a big impact on your overall health. Plus, it feels good. If you are interested in having small group yoga classes at your work place, please contact Tracy Loffler at Unison Yoga at tracy@unisonyoga.ca . Tracy Loffler is the owner of Unison Yoga in Mission and has been teaching yoga since 2002. She teaches with compassion, and is experienced working with people who are injured or have other physical limitations. Visit www.unisonyoga.ca for schedule and class information.

he workshops occur in a relaxed, informal setting with everyone encouraged to participate at their own comfort level. I use small groups for much of the discussion after a topic has been presented, and all who are willing can add their two cents! There are breaks with refreshments. Some reading or workbook completion is the only homework, but is not mandatory. Join us and enjoy a few laughs as you learn to age in style.

YYouth

Difference There was a big need for a new skatepark. The Mayor asked me to make it happen, so I did. It was the first really exciting project I tackled as a new City Councillor. Luckily Council was supportive even though they weren’t familiar with skate & bike parks. They really took the time to get immersed in the culture. I think it help a lot with the final approval.

Feature Interview – Akash Gill You were key in getting the new skatepark funded and up and running. What was the process like? We began with some meetings in the youth lounge just me and maybe 5 others. We gathered points on why we should get a new skatepark, and we looked up ways to present this to the city for about a year. We ended up getting a power point together, and got a spot at the next city hall meeting. The council ended up agreeing in favour for a new skatepark, and then Newline won the bid. Everyone helped design, and then boom it was built.

It’s exciting to see the park packed. The kids love it. Everytime I walk by I get high fives from the kids and they tell me about the new adventures in skating. Some even have sponsors now. They never would have had an opportunity without this park. I look forward to seeing these guys keep working hard... who knows maybe one day we will see them in the Olympics! Mission has been so supportive and there was a flooding of volunteers from nonprofits, community and of course our staff! I was very impressed by the youth, using their own personal money and supporting the go-fund me campaign that brought in a big chunk & helped finish the top deck of the park! - Rhett Nicholson Mission City Council

Did you ever feel like it wouldn't happen? When did that change? People would tell me "We've been trying to get a new park for years there's no point in trying kid". I was like 13 at the time I just brushed it off. I knew this would happen when Calvin told me we were going to present this to council. Dealing with the mayor, and other city stuff was nice. They treated me like an adult it was pretty cool. Honestly it feels so good to say "I made it happen". Everyday I ride the park it makes me feel hyped I helped get something like that for my community. Shoutout to Kyle Wolf – 12 and already a killer skater.
