IS YOUR PATIO READY FOR SUMMER? Here are some simple ways to refresh your patio without breaking the bank. Tools Required: - Pressure washer, - Safety Eye wear - Out door Wide-head, Stiff bristled Brush - You choice of Moss and Algae removal agent The simplest way that any home-owner can spruce up their outdoor patio area is by cleaning away any debris left over from fall and winter by using a pressure washer. Pressure washers are extremely effective for removing any algae, lichens or moss that may have started to develop and can cause any hard surfaces to become slippery. The use of a pressure washer is also an environmentally friendly alternative to using harsh chemicals to remove the algae or moss build up. If you don’t have a pressure washer handy, you can always use a wide head outdoor scrub brush, with either wire bristles’ or stiff natural bristles’. Using a scrub brush is great if you only have a small area to clean. If you do choose to use a chemical to assist you in the removal the algae and moss build-up in your patio area, there are many varieties available for you use. Make sure you read the label and that the product is applicable for your patio surface. With any type of chemical removal agent, or even using environmentally friendly alternative, yearly maintenance and upkeep is key to a long lasting patio. Once your outdoor living space has been washed, its ready to go. One of the simplest ways to energize your outdoor living space is to add plants. These plants can not only look great, but also add a splash of colour to your living area, but you can also grow herbs and vegetable plants that will benefit you and your family all summer long. Hardy herbs grow great in containers such as oregano, thyme, basil, chives, and rosemary; as well as other vegetables like Lettuce, Spinach and Arugula. Plant pots also come in a variety of colours and shapes and are also an excellent way of adding colour and personality to your outdoor living space or patio area. Depending on textures, colours and height of the pots you choose, you can create the image of a large open area.

All of us have times where we can use some extra support. Children and adults with disabilities often require specialized support that may not exist within their family and friend networks. Each year, Mission Association for Community Living (MACL) provides support to 450 children and adults, through programs that are considered essential services for their families. We provide facilities, equipment, transportation, education and support staff necessary for people with disabilities to attend childcare programs, live, play and work in their home community of Mission. As our costs are not always covered by our government funders, we rely on community support through donations and fundraising efforts. Every donation, whatever the amount, remains in Mission.

Rotary Club of Mission A Family Affair! Did you know that the Rotary Club of Mission Mid-Day has been sending school children home with food for the weekend through the Blessings in a Backpack program for the past two and half years? This program continues under the Leadership of Rotarians Erin & Tom Osterberg and their fantastic helpers, their children Tyson (9) and Elena (7). Lesa Lacey of Lacey Construction started the ‘Blessings’ program in the Mission community. She then approached our club and we jumped in with both feet! Each week, the Blessings program is delivered in 5 schools in our community. Erin & Tom do the shopping and packing for one school and our program has been supporting an average of 15 children per week. The children (selected by the principal) receive backpacks full of essential food to tie them over the weekends The slogan of the Blessings in a Backpack organization is “Hunger Doesn’t Take the Weekends Off”. Blessings is a unique results-oriented program designed to feed elementary school children who may not have any or enough food on the weekends. Blessings was founded in the U.S. in 2003 to meet

the needs of underprivileged children who are fed through government programs at school during the week, and have no food to eat at home on the weekends. Their website boasts better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behaviour, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. $120 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. To get involved today, contact Rotary Club of Mission Mid-Day President Brad Reminek at: president@rotarymissionmidday.ca or visit www. blessingsinabackpack.ca to make a direct donation by choosing the “Mission Heights” program. Tax receipts are immediately emailed.

Recognizing Mission Business as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary Th The Mission Mi i E Economic i Development Department is recognizing one long-serving business each month in 2017 as part of the community’s 125th Anniversary celebrations. These articles can be found in the Mission City Record and missionbizenews. ca. With over 70 Mission companies in business for over 25 years there is no shortage of nominees. This serves as a testimony to the daily contribution these businesses make to the local economy, while offering goods and services that help to build a strong and cohesive community. When the statistics show that, “about 85 percent of businesses that enter the marketplace survive for one full year, 70 percent survive for two years and 51 percent VXUYLYH IRU ¿YH \HDUV´ VRXUFH Industry Canada), there is every reason to celebrate the longevity of these organizations and the variety of sectors in which they have found

success. Th These b businesses i iinclude l d small retail stores like Arnold’s Shoe Repair, iconic restaurant Rocko’s Diner and Mission Towing, with fame on the small screen though the hit TV show Highway Thru Hell. Many have seen and survived challenges including international recessions, political change and huge shifts in technology. The reoccurring themes that the owners have all mentioned are their ability to adapt, embrace change and offer consistently high levels of customer service. The biggest factor, however, is the support and loyalty Mission residents have VKRZQ WKHP IURP WKH WLPH WKH\ ¿UVW opened their doors to the present day, with many now seeing the children of their original clients as customers.

WKHP´ K 0DQ\ RI RXU ORQJ VHUYLQJ business owners give back to the community through volunteering time and products, sitting on QRQ SUR¿W ERDUGV DQG RIIHULQJ advice and mentorship to the new generation of entrepreneurs. It is this civic spirit which ensures that Mission’s legacy continues as we embark on our next 125 years.

Rocko’s Diner

Debbie Trenholm from World Odyssey Travel & Cruise recently commented “Mission has a real community feel and supports their own and we, in turn, look to support

What years did the Canucks compete in the Stanley Cup Finals What are “The Sedin Twins” first names? True Sport is a values driven program that makes perfect sense for every age and every sport. Why do True Sport prin-ciples matter? The True Sport Principles express an approach to sport that the vast majority of Canadians already believe in and practice. Although widely embraced, these principles often go un-spoken. So when they are violated — when people’s attitudes and actions threaten healthy and respectful competition — supporters of good sport can be caught off guard, unsure how to stand up for the sport they believe in. The True Sport Principles are a rallying point for True Sport members — they are universal. The principles can be brought to life in any sport at any level, from playground to podi-um. The principles are: Go for It; Play Fair; Respect Others; Keep it Fun; Stay Healthy; Include Everyone; Give Back. For sport to be truly good and have the opportunity to make the greatest difference, all seven of these principles need to be in play at all times, working in perfect balance with one another.

3 Myths About Yoga MYTH #1: You have to be flexible to do yoga. WRONG! Saying that you need to be flexible in order to do yoga is like saying you need to be able to know how to swim before you take lessons. Let me be clear: There is no yogic wisdom anywhere that says you have to be flexible before you come to a class. In fact, lifestyle factors like sitting a lot, repetitive motion, not eating healthy food or not getting enough exercise, make most of us pretty tight and stiff. Also, when you consider genetic factors, injuries, illness, body type and bone structure, what is considered flexible in one body is not necessarily true for another.

MYTH #2: You have to be “spiritual” and be calm all the time if you want to do yoga. NOPE.

Yoga is for anyone and everyone; regardless of race, religion or temperament. Yes, yoga offers teachings about lifestyle but there are no “rules” you have to follow and the philosophy is clear that there are different kinds of people, who need different types of yogic practices. Yoga will meet you where you’re at, without expectation.

MYTH #3: All yoga is the same. NO WAY! If your doctor has told you that you should do yoga to help with an injury, disease or other health issues, you need to make sure you are going to a class that is appropriate for you.

Tracy Loffler is the owner of Unison Yoga in Mission and has been teaching yoga since 2002. She teaches with compassion, humour and open heart and is experienced working with people who are injured or have other physical limitations. All of her classes offer variations and modifications to accommodate “every body”. To learn more about Tracy and register for a class, visit www.unisonyoga.ca

Fortunately, there are numerous styles of yoga, types of classes and a lot of great teachers out there. When you are choosing a class to go, ask questions about whether or not it will be appropriate for your health conditions. Do your research and ask around for referrals, especially if you have an injury or illness that needs special attention.
