PLANTING TREES, SHRUBS and CONIFERS. Shrubs and trees are an excellent way of adding character to your home, whether it’s a hedging Boxwood or an eye catching Japanese Maple Tree. But for successful planting, you need to select your plants carefully and be sure they are suited to your soil conditions and environment as well as the type of soil and the function of the plant or tree you are wanting to add to your landscape. When choosing your plants, remember: When is the right season to be planting the tree or shrub of your choice. Size and form of the plant when mature and the available sunlight. Climate conditions where you’ll be planting (wind, harsh winter conditions); Type of soil (texture, structure, drainage, pH);
WHEN TO PLANT
Burlapped and Potted Plants Can be planted throughout the season unless the root ball breaks; in that case, follow the directions for planting bare-root plants. For spring planting, make sure the soil has completely thawed and is dry enough to work with. Try to avoid planting less hardy woody plants in the fall. If you plant smaller plants in late fall, you may find the following spring that the root ball has risen, a consequence of freezing soil during the winter.
BARE-ROOT PLANTS:
Should be planted before buds open or during the dormant season in the fall. Recovery is riskier than for container and root-balled plants. Shrubs sold to create a hedge are sometimes available bare-rooted. However, the choice of bare-rooted shrubs is fairly limited.
A GUIDE FOR PLANTING YOUR SHRUBS Soil preparation is very important, since woody plants live a long time. 1. Dig a hole 2 to 3 times wider than the diameter of the container, so that the sides are not parallel but angled. Dig a trench for groupings or hedges. 2. Check the depth; it should correspond to the height of the container. 3. Remove the plant from the container, making sure not to damage the root ball. If roots are coiled around the container, make three or four incisions with a knife (up and down), taking care not to undo the root ball. This procedure can be done if the plant is not in its growth cycle or planting is not done in very hot weather. 4. Place the root collar at the same level as in its original container 5. Mix the soil from the hole with peat moss and compost to lighten it. Its recommend to use 2 parts excavated soil for 1 part compost as well as bone meal for additional nutrients 6. If the soil is dry fill the hole with water to pre-soak the surrounding soil. 7. Fill the hole with the amended soil. 8. Pack the earth and water generously to eliminate air pockets. 9. Thoroughly water the amended soil to ensure root stimulation
WATERING
GENERAL MAINTENANCE AFTER PLANTING Don’t let grass or weeds grow in around your new plants because the grass could end up choking the new plant. Eliminate suckers growing around tree trunks as they can cause you plant to slow its growth and if you have chosen a flowering shrub, to decrease the number of blossoms. You won’t need to fertilize most woody plants a second time during the growing season, and never after mid-July, so that plants have enough time to harden off before winter. If plants are growing well and you need to prune, you won’t need to fertilize every year. Now you can sit back and enjoy the benefits of seeing your shrub or tree grow and bloom year after year.
After planting, water generously once a week. Water to a depth of about 30 cm. Avoid watering to excess in normal weather conditions. Superficial watering encourages plants to develop surface roots, which weakens them.

Mission’s Community Resilience Initiative – Building hope and healing What are your core beliefs about people and why they do the things they do? Science tells us that to understand human behaviour we should be asking people not “what is wrong with you”, but instead, “What happened to you”. An Adverse Childhood Experience survey (ACEs) has been created and presented all over the world. This survey asks questions around abuse & neglect in your first 18 years of life, and produces a “score” of childhood traumas that directly influence your chance of mental and physical health issues like heart disease, substance misuse, depression and anxiety. The good news is, Resilience counters ACEs, in fact, we know that a child having at least one relationship with a caring responsible person can be a huge support of how one deals with trauma. NEAR sciences are booming around the globe (neuroscience, epigenetics, ACEs, resilience) and shifting the way we understand people, how we work with people and how we view those that are struggling. This is also called trauma informed practice and it involves everyone from parents & caregivers to teachers & support staff to clinicians, doctors, bus drivers and community agencies. The saying “It takes a village to raise a child” couldn’t be more true and fitting to what the last 25 years in research have revealed and proven with a study of over 17,000 mostly white, middle and upper-middle class college-educated folks with good jobs and great health care..
What is Mission doing? Many community partners are demonstrating trauma informed practice and taking action to create a resilient community. Here are eight steps Mission is taking: 1.
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
District of Mission (Social Development) and the Mission School District partnered to coordinate a school based social work pilot project January – April 2017 to identify families impacted by multiple life barriers to success and dialogue with schools around how we can work differently together to better support families and youth. A second pilot will begin in January 2018. An interdisciplinary staff team attended the Trauma Informed Care Conference in Walla Walla (Parks and Recreation, Social Development and Early Childhood) Annual Mission Professional Development Conference to be held October 2017 with a trauma informed theme Register @ PT2017.eventbrite.ca A Mission Maternity Doctor has begun integrating ACEs into practice and will be presenting the study to Physicians this year with the goal of implementing the ACE score into all GP practices Mission School District presenting the film, Paper Tigers, at September Pro-D Day MIssion LAT presented 2 community viewings of the film, Resilience, earlier this year Mission DPAC bringing in expert Dr. Gabor Mate beginning of October (700 tickets sold out in 10 days) Mission Division of Family Practice hired a Social Worker/ Community Navigator to demonstrate the need of support in Mission
We are excited to share these findings and actions with readers of What’s On magazine and we invite anyone interested in being part of this world wide shift in caring for children and families to come and learn with us at the Pulling Together event. The more a community honours the stories and lived experiences of all its members, the safer a climate we create (safety includes physical, psychological, social and moral safety). If the brain drives behaviour, what’s the story? What’s your story? Are you willing to make space for others stories? Would you like to be a part of changing the story for Mission’s children and youth? “Students who are loved at home, come to school to learn and students who are not, come to school to be loved” – Nicholas Ferroni For more information please contact: Nicole Martin nmartin@divisionsbc.ca or Kirsten Hargreaves khargreaves@mission.ca

Trendy or What Knot Yarns & Gifts, the 2016 recipient of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce B u s i n e s s Excellence Aw a rd - - P o w e r of Small, was born in the spring of 2014 of owner Mady Pechler’s own love of knitting. She decided to create a destination for other “yarn explorers” on 1St. Avenue in downtown Mission. Today Pechler brings in yarn from all over the world, and customers from all over B.C.. In addition to myriad yarns, Pechler offers accessories, needles and notions, classes and workshops, as well as a meeting place where “people can just come in with their projects, sit at the table to work, and ask questions if they need help, especially on Thursday evenings which are dedicated to ‘Trendy’s Sit & Stitch Club’, a free to attend weekly gathering for crafters in all disciplines.”

Donna Duvall Artist I am an Artist living in Mission, where I am surrounded by stunning views and artistic inspiration.
https://www.Instagram.com/creativeduv
I grew up on a farm in Northern Saskatchewan where I believe my love of animals and nature was born and continues to grow with each painting I create. I enjoy sharing the journey that art is taken me on, through teaching what I have learned to children and adults, and I hope to awaken the artist within each student. I work mostly with acrylics, color pencil and mix media mediums. My art has not only taken me on a journey of skills growth but has been a part of a healing journey too. Although I enjoy travel-teaching across Canada, teaching the local paint parties has been a rewarding community experience. I have been an active artist for the International Memory Box Program, an organization that helps bereaved mothers and fathers leave the hospital with a hand-painted Memory Box for their loved one. I recently donated “painting” time to help raise money for wildlife rescue and other community charities. I finished a 6 year term as a Director with the Mission Art Council and after a short break I am back on the Board. I continue to be a member and volunteer my time helping out with Youth activities, in particular the “The Young Voices” annual gallery exhibition, showcasing the talented high school youth in our community. This has been an absolute pleasure! My goal is to capture that what makes us truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds us whether it’s the serene or the majestic! And sometimes adding a little whimsy here and there! http://www.donnascreativehaven.ca https://www.facebook.com/DonnaDuvallArtist https://twitter.com/creativeduv

What Do Interior Designers Do? If you want to transform a room into something that’s functional, beautiful and perfectly matched to your taste, then you might want to hire an interior designer. It’s an interior designer’s job to come up with imaginative ideas that will wow you. It’s a myth that interior designers just deal with paint colors, décor and furnishings. In fact, according to the Interior Designers Institute, these professionals have the training needed to handle all aspects of a renovation or remodeling project, including selecting and managing contractors. They can direct a project from beginning to end. If you want to renovate your basement into a stunning home theatre and gathering place, an interior designer can: • Draw out several concepts for you to choose from, • Purchase the best building materials, • Hire the contractors, and • Manage the project. A well thought out renovation could add functionality for you to enjoy and add thousands to the value of your home. Call me 604-615-6446 for a personal recommendation.
