FALL APPROACHES imagination to design a playroom your children will remember forever? Create a space that reflects their interests, personalities, hobbies and preferences. Keep in mind that today's kids are tomorrow's teens. They will replace toys with watching television, playing electronic games or listening to music with friends. These same teens will turn into young adults who may wish to challenge mom and dad to a game of pool or Fall is already approaching, and there’s still much table tennis. Design your playroom to transition to do! through the different stages of life, ensuring your little ones—no matter how old or big they may First things first, make sure you’re prepared! be—always have a space to “play.” Check your stock of RONA composting bags, Try these fun ideas: rakes, and even a leafblower to help you ease into the new season. è Chalkboard accent wall Another helpful tip: keep your Summer gear safe! Consider the possibility of a plastic storage shed to keep everything safe and ready to go for next year. Much more economical than finding a mess of ruined things next June. Be smart with your storage. PROJECT PLAN: DESIGN A NEW PLAYROOM! As the kids are headed to school, they’re bound to bring new playmates into your home. PUBLISHER'S NOTE Mission was abuzz with activity this summer, from the Annual Twilight Concert Series, to the Mission Folk Music Festival, MissionFest, Sunset Markets, Road Races at the Raceway and more. There was something for everyone to enjoy. Reflecting on the fun-filled, sun-kissed memories, the great turnout and smiles have made all the hard work of the volunteers, organizers and vendors worth it and makes me so thankful to be a part of this community! As autumn approaches, there is a sense of renewal: new classrooms, friends and activities. Challenge yourself, learn something new and have fun at the same time by checking out the sports organizations and fitness classes, dance and art classes and the many community events in this issue. Also, BC Culture Days has announced Mission as host city for the 2019 BC Culture Days Provincial Launch. Be sure to bring the whole family to this free event, September 22 from 1-3pm at the Clarke Theatre. Discover the many reasons why I #lovemissionbc.

MISSION HAS A REPAIR CAFÉ Don’t you hate it when your stuff breaks and no one makes the parts anymore or it costs more to fix than to buy a new one? The solution – a Repair Café! A Repair Café is a community event where volunteers help citizens repair household electrical and mechanical devices, computers, bicycles, clothing, etc... The objective is to counteract the damaging and frustrating effects of our disposable society by reducing waste, saving money, keeping valuable objects out

of the landfill, and strengthening community. In addition to having objects repaired, people can learn some of the skills for their own future use. These events are popping up in towns and cities around the world. Mission’s first Repair Café took place on July 6 on the Mission Museum porch. The event coincided with the opening of a new exhibit at the museum and was organized jointly by The Be The Change Action Circle, BRIM (Building Resilience In Mission) and the Museum. Eight people had items successfully repaired.

A second café was scheduled for August 10 on the Museum porch, to coincide with MissionFest and the move of the Farmers’ Market to Welton Common. Plans are underway for a September Repair Café; watch for the date and location to be announced. Bring your broken objects and we will try to fix them for you. And you can perhaps add a few repair skills to your own repertoire. We are also looking for people who would like to volunteer their repair skills.

For information or to volunteer your skills, e-mail bethechangemission@gmail.com

Should You Replace your Windows? Here’s a surprising statistic. Less than 30% of window replacements are the result of the old windows being worn, broken or otherwise in need of replacement. Clearly, there are other good reasons to consider new windows!

IN THE COMMUNITY nual n A 2nd

Mission KidSport Golf Tournament Save the Date

One of the most popular motivations is cosmetic. Brand new windows have a huge impact on the overall look of a home, both on the inside and the outside. New windows can improve curb appeal — an important element when you sell a home. From the inside, new windows can dramatically improve the look of a room. Another reason to replace windows is to address energy costs. Modern windows are packed with technologies that lower heating/ cooling bills. From low-e/argon to special spacer bars to highinsulating construction, these technologies can provide savings you’ll notice, especially if you’re replacing very old windows. A third reason is window style and characteristics. Simply put, you may not like your current windows! You may want more glass and less frame to enhance your view. Maybe your windows pull up (vertical sliders) when you’d rather have them open like a door (casements). Perhaps you’d like fancy blinds in-between the panes of glass. Replacing windows lets you get exactly the look and features you want. Will new windows boost the resale value of your home? They might, at least a little. But there’s one thing for certain: upgraded windows definitely make your home look more appealing to buyers.

Just ask Andre ... Alopecia, the term for hair loss, presents itself in many forms and will effect most people in the course of their lives. Male pattern baldness first comes to mind, of course, but female pattern baldness a more subtle diffuse thinning of the top the head is pretty common. Both types are similarly caused by genetics and reactions to hormonal activity. The hair follicle, the bulb of cells and stem cells that crank out hair, start to wimp out and become dormant. The hair shaft becomes finer then falls out. One in three women experiences female pattern alopecia. It doubles after menopause. Women can also experience hair loss after pregnancy, shock, stress or chemo. Generally hair will grow back after those types of events. If you lose a lot of hair fairly quickly, months not years, then you can be confident that it should grow back. There are remedies to hair loss. Minoxidil, or Rogain, is a topical medication used for male female pattern baldness. It can be very effective at reactivating long dormant hair follicles. It can actually give you new hair. Sadly, it only works while you’re using the product. Talk your doctor or pharmacist. Hair growth supplements can also help rejuvenate the hair follicle. Biotin, a main ingredient, and the more effective Hyaluric acid (Skin Side Out) can boost keratin production, strengthening the follicles for thicker, courser hair. Available in supplement stores, some salons, spas and the web, they can be effective at improving hair growth. Generally, it takes 3 months to see any improvement. The best strategy for improving the look and feel of thinning hair include a good suitable haircut, balancing weight and porpotion in the style. Bangs and multi dimensional colouring are some ways to thicken up that style. As we age being and looking healthy look is youthful. Your hairstylist can help with solving thinning problems and can recommend a good regime. Coloured keratin fibres, such as Toppic, are a makeup that can applied onto your scalp with a puffer. It really works at hiding the scalp and thickening up the hair and is available at Sally’s. It’s scary for women dealing with thinning hair, while some forms are temporary, there are remedies and strategies to deal with gradual loss.

Is Mission a dog (pet) friendly city? Yes! Mission has so many outdoor community events and festivals year-round that allow on leash dogs to join in on the family fun. It’s a great opportunity for your dog to socialize, fine tune their impulse control and leash manners (Please consult a professional dog trainer before your first attempt). Where are some good places to take my dog for a walk in Mission? Mission is a gem for beautiful parks and trails to discover. Did you know, we have the longest recreational, multi-use trail network in the world in our backyard? The Trans Canada trail, more commonly known as the Dyke Trail is an iconic and wonderful on leash trail for you and your dog. My dogs and I love to hike and explore. Our favorites trails to visit on the weekends are Cranks and Hayward Lake trail. Do you have any suggestions for a good breed of dog to get if I live in a condo? All dogs need daily exercise, plenty of attention, and access to the outdoors, but Greyhounds and Bulldogs are considered the best breeds for apartment living. They are well known to be couch potatoes, but will rise to the occasion for a walk with their companion.

HALLOWEN DANCE! October 31, 2019 1:00PM - 4:00PM SENIORS KITCHEN

We will be open Monday to Friday, 11am - 1pm.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

Lounge is open Monday to Friday 10am 2pm. Contact the Seniors Centre for the Fall Schedule 33100 -10th Avenue 604-814-2188 E: msca2011@shaw.ca www.missionseniorscentre.com

Does my dog need to be licensed, and if so, what for? Like most cities, the municipality of Mission does require you to register and license your dog. A license on your dog’s collar is the fastest and easiest way to find a missing pet whether found by a good Samaritan or picked up by the pound. The licensing fee also goes to supporting your local animal control/shelter, and in Mission’s case, the Community Animal Response and Education Centre (CARE). There seems to be a pet related service business on every corner in this city. How do I go about finding the right one? Personally, I like referrals from family and friends, so ask your network for recommendations or join a local group/page on social media for suggestions. A couple tips when searching: interview the potential dog daycare or walker just as much as they should be interviewing you and your dog. For grooming salons, check out their ‘before and after shots’ of different breed cuts, bring a picture of the style you want, and speak with the groomer at the appointment versus the receptionist so there is no miscommunication.

Written by Liam Bushey, age 16. His thoughtful take on Thanksgiving.

iving in Mission, I have taken many things for granted. I have become used to living here and I have never taken time out of my day to realize how lucky I actually am. I am very thankful that Mission is an extremely safe place to grow up in. Whenever I want to bike to the store with my friends, I feel completely safe to do it.

Another thing that I am thankful for are all the different sports facilities that you can find in Mission. I live close to the sports park, and whenever I have a soccer or baseball game, I really love playing on these fields. The leisure center is another sports facility that I value. Over the years, I have enjoyed swimming and playing hockey there.

Most of all, I really appreciate that I am almost completely surrounded by nature. I have had many memories of hiking with my dad through the beautiful forests and trails in the community. I sometimes forget how fortunate I am to be able to open my door, go a few kilometres in any direction, and be completely immersed in the wilderness! When I give it just a little thought, I realize how lucky I am to be living in such a wonderful community.

District of Mission or City of Mission? “CITY” RECLASSIFICATION Mission has just launched a process to seek approval from eligible electors for reclassifying the District to a City. The Alternative Approval Process is being used for this initiative. This means that eligible voters who are opposed to the initiative must respond by submitting an official response form. Unless 10% or more of eligible voters respond in opposition, the reclassification can move forward. Becoming a City is not a small decision and many people have strong opinions on what makes Mission unique. Therefore, we have decided to provide more than double the required timeframe for electors to respond. We are providing official forms and drop-boxes for completed responses at all our official municipal offices, the Leisure Centre, and the Mission Library. Find out more at www.mission.ca or come by our offices to pick up an information package and response form.

WATERFRONT: As identified in Council’s Strategic Plan and in the Official Community Plan, the waterfront remains an important community revitalization priority.

its industrial legacy and continued importance as a “working river”. The river continues to have an industrial function and also represents a significant opportunity for Mission to achieve urban land intensification for over 60 hectares (150 acres) of land designated for high-density residential, mixed-use and continuing industrial presence. Recognizing that waterfront planning must occur through an integrated and comprehensive approach, the District of Mission is actively taking the necessary preliminary steps to ensure that development of the waterfront plan is technically feasible, marketable, and one that has incorporated the community’s interests and goals. The Economic Development Office is currently leading efforts associated with landowner and stakeholder engagement, the undertaking of approximately 30 test sites associated with geotechnical assessments, and the development of a roadmap to guide overall waterfront revitalization efforts. This body of work will be completed in the fall and will set the stage for more detailed planning in 2020.

DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY: Mission continues to be one of the fastest growing populations in the Lower Mainland, where in 2016 the community grew by 3.9% (BC Stats). That trend continues with no significant evidence of an overall slowdown, as can be seen in our building permit graph (below). Construction projects continue to rise and the development community continues to be bullish on Mission. While residential housing market continues to dominate, we are excited to see a couple of large commercial and industrial projects now in the pipeline.

For more information and to follow the progress of the project, visit www. mission.ca/waterfront.

In addition to its historical, cultural and recreational importance, the Fraser River has been central to the development of the community given
