FUN IN THE SUN Make it a DIY summer! Here are two clever project ideas to get you busy: 1. Build a planter box! This square planter is a great solution for gardeners who have limited space to practice their hobby. This 4.5’ planter takes only two hours to build and is made with 12 concrete deck blocks and as many wood planks. See RONA.ca for details and a helpful how-to video! 2. Happy hour! Make a bar counter. When you have minimal deck space, a tidy counter like this is the unsung hero. This bar counter offers the same practicalities as a table but takes up much less space. An original way to make the most of the area.

Here in the Fraser Valley, summer also means smoke-ridden air. For this time of year, we recommend using a dust mask, air purifier, and an army of fans to keep that clean air circulating. Our featured air conditioners are 3-in-1! Designed to suit everyone’s needs, its a fan, dehumidifier, and air conditioner! Our team would be happy to help you pick out the best products to suit you and your family’s needs this smokey season.

Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays.

Be sure to check out the Sports Car Club of BC road races at the River's Edge Road Course. Mission residents get in for free. Another fun family event is the weekend-long Mission Folk Music Festival, full of food, vendors and musicians from all around the world. If you want something a little more relaxing, you can head on down to the Farmer's Market or hit up the Sunset Markets at Heritage Park. Come out for a free Twilight Concert, every Wednesday and Friday, you can't beat the beautiful backdrop of Heritage Park and the lush, green dance floor. There are so many reason to #lovemissionbc.

Celebrating 25 years of road racing at Mission Raceway Park, Mission, B.C. The SCCBC has been organizing road racing events since the early ‘50’s. First on unused runways at the Abbotsford and Blaine Airports and then at Westwood Motorsport Park, which was built by the members in 1959. For 32 years the SCCBC operated the only club-owned road racing facility in Canada. In 1990 the B.C. government cancelled the lease, Westwood closed. A golf course and houses now stand on the Coquitlam mountainside. In the fall of 1992 the B.C. Custom Car Association (BCCCA), who own and operate Mission Raceway Park, generously allowed SCCBC to hold a Driver Training School on the cool down section of the drag strip, the existing return roads and a new paved section called the Cascade Curves, funded by Cascade Sports Car Club. Those curves are now turns 4-5. The school attracted just under 20 new students and a dozen racers wanting a refresher. The step from schools to racing required cement barriers, tire walls and more pavement. In 1993, the club negotiated a contract with the BCCCA, held two more driver schools with increasing enrollment, and several test and tune days. Funds were raised to continue improvements through events and by initiating an “Adopt a Block” program. Members donated $250 to adopt a barrier. In September the contract was signed. With the support of Molson Indy Vancouver blocks were acquired. The road course was completed in the Spring of 1994. Six successful race weekends were held. Road racing was back in BC and continued to grow. In 2001 the track was extended and the current turns 1 & 2 were added. In 2008 several corners were reconfigured as the facility continued to be improved. Twenty five years later the track has 9 turns,126 paved paddock spaces, new grandstands and a washroom building, and hosts 7 race weekends and two drivers schools each year as well as many Corporate, club, and private track rentals.

River’s Edge recognizes the commitment of its fans and spectators by charging some of the lowest prices in the motorsport industry. Children 12 and under are admitted free while adult admission is only $10, and even lower by the bunch. Bring a carload and everyone on board gets in for $25. Plus parking is always free. Are you a proud Mazda owner? Through our sponsorship program with Mazda Canada all Mazda drivers and their passengers are admitted free for the 2019 season.

Admission and Parking:

than to spend a few minutes with their fans to talk about their car, their experience and their love for the sport of auto racing. Spectators are encouraged to tour the paddock, view the cars up close and talk to the drivers and crew. Who knows, your 5-year-old may even get a few moments in the cockpit of that formula car she/he liked so much!

Pit Access: They may look busy but racers love nothing more

Viewing: Spectator viewing at River’s Edge is second to none with a large grandstand at the west end of the paddock overlooking turn 2 and offering a view of 75% of the track, and a new grandstand built this year right in the paddock allowing a view of the racing pits, turns 7 thru 9, the front straight and the start/finish line. We race from April through October, rain or shine. The action starts at 9:00 AM both Saturday and Sunday, with practice and qualifying sessions followed by exciting wheel-to-wheel racing. After it’s all over, visit our Race Results page at www.sccbc.net to find lap times and speeds for your favorite drivers and cars.

Without a doubt, auto racing is one of the most exciting sports ever devised. There is an indescribable, visceral feeling as a jostling crowd of brutishly powerful and highly engineered automobiles thunder by, each one daring the other to step beyond the physical limits that tie them to the asphalt.

The Sports Car Club of BC works hard to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for racers and fans alike. Every year, the SCCBC brings seven or more amateur road racing events to the River’s Edge Road Course at Mission Raceway. These events are aimed at attracting drivers of all calibers, from novice to professional, and cars of all vintages, old and new. Every event is a showcase of past and current racing technology and vehicles, and, for motorsport enthusiasts, are not to be missed.

If tearing up the track at breakneck speeds is not your immediate future, you can get closer to the action by joining our corps of talented and dedicated volunteers who make this sport run safely and efficiently. We have rewarding volunteer positions available for turn marshals, safety marshals, timing, track operations, administration and in other skilled and unskilled areas. Visit our Volunteers page for more information. Come to our events and see what it’s all about. Training goes on throughout the season on a one-on-one basis.

Volunteers

Joining the SCCBC is not just for race drivers. The club’s mission is to promote road-course racing and to encourage and promote safe road conduct in BC. If you share our passion for road racing, you’ll find kindred spirits at the SCCBC. Visit our Membership page to find out why membership in the SCCBC may be just the tonic for you.

Become a Member

You don’t need to wait until you’ve found a suitable car and class to work toward your race license. Visit our Driver Training page to learn how you can become a skilled, competitive driver, all while qualifying for your novice race license. Refer to our driver training frequently asked questions page for answers to our most common driver training course questions.

Driver Training – Road racing; not street racing

Whether your passion is to pilot a powerful formula car around the race track at peak speeds or cajole a wonderfully temperamental 50-year-old vintage car through a crowd of them, SCCBC and the River’s Edge have a class for you. Visit our Race With Us page at www.sccbc.net to learn more about the type of cars and their competition.

Race With Us:

At River’s Edge Road Course at Mission Raceway, we see racing as something beyond just grease and gas, rubber and metal, horsepower and speed. We also see it as a family affair, a place where there is something for everyone. Where you don’t need a five- or six-figure annual budget to compete, and where the whole family can be involved in a challenging, rewarding and unifying experience.

Wow! August 2 to 4, 2019 will bring Abbotsford’s 109th Agrifair!! Two years in a row, Agrifair has been voted “Favourite Community Event” (Abbotsford News poll) and received an Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards nomination for the “Tourism Event of the Year”. We aim to make this year’s event an even bigger success. In keeping with our 2019 theme, “Where Memories Are Made”, we have, once again, created a diverse, family-friendly program of entertainment guaranteed to create lifelong memories for ruralites and urbanites alike. Already scheduled new events include a Pirate Ship Show - get your best “arr matey” ready as ‘Pirates of the Fraser’ tell a tale of battles, trickery, thievery and deception. As the Royal Navy defends it’s fleet, in particular ‘The Maid of the Moores’, the finest ship of the Royal Navy vessels. They will have to fight extra hard to fend off the scurvy pirates of the Fraser River. A test of skills will do the job to see who sails away with the ship…but maybe Crackers the Parrot has other ideas? Buy your raffle ticket to be part of the Crushin It; tank car-crush event. Win a prime seat in the Tank as it crushes cars! Proceeds will be shared with Cops for Cancer, Canuck House Abbotsford, CMEC and Agrifair. Back after a 15 year absence a jaw dropping, ear popping Tractor/Truck Pull Competition and Show. Presented by Campbell Motorsports of

NOT enough? How about evening concerts? Friday features “Agrifair’s Talent with a Twist”, hint – think Gong Show! Saturday concert entertainment starts with Cambree Lovesy, Ryan McAllister & the North Country Gentlemen, finishing with night with CHILLIWACK, Whatch Gonna Do?? Closing the fair for 2019 the Sunday concert, Praise in the Park features David Dunn, Mark Schultz and headliner The Afters. Just ask Andre ... Take good care of that summer hair

Hot smoky summers can be damaging to your hair. Heat, UV and smoke particles dry and disrupt the moisture balance of hair, leaving it more brittle and crispy looking, especially the ends. Nothing ages you more then brittle washed out ends, enhancing wrinkles and other facial imperfections. Leave-in treatments, less hair drying and ironing, hats and braids help. Toning your blonde and regular haircuts can also make for healthier locks.

Time for a change?

Long lengths are becoming rounder, bobs are getting more blunt and weighty and pixies are getting longer with bangs. Essentially anything goes when it comes personal style, but the trends are moving toward a more glamorous styling. Beach waves make way for more curls, reminisent of the early 80’s.

Fall hair colour inspirations:

Fall is always a good time to take your hair a bit deeper. A richer, darker frame looks better against paler skin. Instead of just adding darker lowlights for more depth and lots of contrast, tone that light blonde to medium and add some balayage shades for a more subtle variation. Want some fun? Try Lavender. Its becoming a new classic like the greyblondes of the last few years.

Back to school:

The new school year can be very exciting for kids. What with all their rolling around and bumping of heads its a perfect opportunity for lice. Keep in mind, lice does not discriminate and actually prefers clean hair. Try mixing a few drops of Tea Tree and or Lavender essential oils with water in a clean spray bottle, shake and spray onto your kids hair as an effective deterrent. If your kids do get lice, see a pharmacist for treatment options. There's no need to panic or shave their hair.

Dog ETIQUETTE BY RACHELLE MELLANBY

Rachelle Mellanby is the Owner & Canine Trainer of Dogs Crossing: Canine Training and Pet Services in Burnaby, BC.

As a dog trainer, I want to address some common complaints that I hear from both new dog owners and those struggling with a dog who has picked up poor habits. My dog plays ‘catch me if you can’ when off leash. Regardless of whether your dog is predominantly an on-leash dog (ie: reactive or unfixed) you need to have a backup plan if s/he were to get off their lead. Practicing some basic recall exercises such as calling your dog between you and a partner, playing with your dog at the park, along with abstaining from playing fetch will help gain a solid recall. This will not only avoid embarrassing visits to the dog park, it can also be lifesaving! My dog jumps on people. Small dogs and puppies may get away with jumping up, but this habit can become a real problem once fully grown. A great exercise is to take your dog to a storefront or park with your dog’s leash firmly under your feet. Allow greeters to say hello with a pat or treat. Your dog will learn that it can still get plenty of positive attention with four paws on the ground.

My dog barks at the window all day. Most often the case is that your dog is bored. They perch themselves facing the street and give themselves a ‘job’ to do by barking people away. To curb the barking and boredom, put out interactive games such as a snuffle mat or Kong popsicles, and move the sofa from the window. My dog walks me. Does your dog drag you down the street to greet another dog or to investigate a smell? To correct this, you need to gain and maintain your dog’s focus. This can be achieved by making yourself more enticing while on your walk. A few tricks include talking to your dog, using a visual target and/or a word to get their attention. If your dog pulls towards an on-coming dog, change directions until you have regained your dog’s focus and then try it again. If you’re looking to create a more harmonious life for both you and your dog, practice some of the tips provided and consult a positive reinforcement trainer if you think you could use further guidance.

When You See a Home You Love Imagine driving through a desirable neighbourhood and, just as you turn a corner, you see the absolutely perfect home. Guess what? It’s for sale! But, there’s a problem. Your current property isn’t on the market. In fact, until this moment, you hadn’t seriously considered moving. So what do you do? Your first step is to find out more about the listing. Get a description of the property. Find out the listing price. Check out the size, layout, number of bedrooms and other features. If it all looks good, schedule a viewing. Chances are, you can do all that in less than a day. If you go to see the property and still love it, your next step is to determine if it fits within your budget. To do that, you’ll need to quickly find out the Current Market Value of your home — what it will likely sell for — so you can determine how much money you’ll have available after your outstanding mortgage and any other costs are deducted. It’s a smart idea to speak to your lender about getting a pre-approved mortgage at this point too. Next, you’ll need to make an offer on the new home. Depending on the competitiveness of the neighbourhood, and the likelihood of other interested buyers, you might need to list your home first. That, along with a pre-approved mortgage, will make your offer more credible.. But, you do need to move quickly and make some fast decisions if you want to get that perfect home. I can help. Call me direct at 604615-6446.

How to stop anxiety/panic attack in its tracks!

Celebrate Summer

When you start to feel anxiety/panic arising, shift your Focus and attention onto your breath. Give yourself a quick time out and take in 5 deep breaths, exhaling slowly and completely with each out breath. Anxiety is brought on usually by a memory that pops up in the mind which has an emotional response attached to it. These types of memories take us out of the Present moment and has us focused on a past event that is not actually happening in the present moment. Due to the emotional response of the past memory though, this can have us feeling as if that moment is happening right now. Anxiety can also present when we focus on the Future, which also takes us out of the Present moment. By thinking and focusing on events or outcomes that haven’t yet occurred can put us into states of panic and fear. The Breath is how we can gain back control over ourselves within the Present moment. By giving yourself a few moments to stop and redirect your attention onto your breath, then taking in a few deep and cleansing breaths of fresh air, exhaling fully with each release, you bring yourself back into the present moments. This will stop anxiety and panic attacks in their tracks. Being fully present you will see that you are actually quite alright. You can also ask yourself these 4 questions to help yourself stay present and see that everything is actually alright in that moment.

I Care, I Love you Congratulations, Thank you.

3) What do I smell? 4) What do I feel? We all have control on how we respond to what occurs in our present moments and sometimes we just forget because we get caught up in life’s fast paced situations. Learning how to reflect on situations instead of automatically reacting in any given moment, will allow you to be more calm and clear headed. We do have time to take good care of ourselves when we decide to and we would do very well to remind ourselves that we also have more control over our well-being, once we give ourselves that time, care and attention. Breathing is a vital part of our existence and will always be there to help keep you clear headed, grounded and alive! By being more consciously aware of this beautiful gift we have, we will be able to stabilize ourselves just by focusing on our Breathing, slowing it and ourselves down, for it is always supporting us!

MISSION YOUTH Makinley is 7 years old and is a member of the Mission Skating Club, plays ball with Mission Minor Baseball and dances for Abbotsford Dance Academy. Look out for this talented young lady on the stage, ball field or skating rink!

"My Favourite Things About Summer" by Makinley

I got a kayak for the lake. I am going to my grandma's cabin over the summer to use it. I like to play with my friends and swim and hangout with my mom. We like to play with crafts. I am excited to go to community police day and see my friend Cst. Hejazi. I had my dance recital and and skating awards in June . My favourite sports are skating, dance, and baseball. I get to go camping with all my family and my cousins come from Alberta. It is lots of fun and we stay up late to roast marshmallows. We play lots of games, throw water balloons, and go out on the boat.

Mission Senior Secondary's Samual Adams gets signed to play lacrosse with the North Greenville Crusaders.
