SUMMER IS HERE! Beautify your outdoor living space with a few miniprojects, or go all out and redesign your yard with a set of patio furniture!
MINI-PROJECT #1: We carry a variety of different plants, all various colours, shapes, sizes, and species, a selection of these are sure to spruce up your yard in no time. Some tips on using colour to your advantage: • Strong contrasts create a dramatic effect • A softer display can be created with a monochromatic theme • A dominant colour with accents in its complementary colour produce a beautiful balance • Adding a touch of grey can tone down a contrast that is too strong
MINI-PROJECT #2 Brighten up your backyard with some lighting! From the eco-friendly solar lighting to trendy pendant lights, you’ll create a feature the whole neighbourhood will want to copy. Whether you’re going for a modern feel or a rustic vibe, we have all the lighting to accommodate your tastes.
RE-MODEL! A fresh set of patio furniture is sure to revamp your backyard lounge. A vibrant sectional and pillows, matching table and chairs, or just a big umbrella to hide from the sun, we have many different sets to view in-store. Don’t see what you’re looking for? RONA.CA has even more!
Hours of operation: We’re open 7 days a week, and are open early and late on weekdays.

Wants to be included! All of us have times where we can use some extra support. Children and adults with disabilities often require specialized support that may not exist within their family and friend networks. Each year, Mission Association for Community Living (MACL) provides support to 450 children and adults, through programs that are considered essential services for their families. We provide facilities, equipment, transportation, education and support staff necessary for people with disabilities to attend childcare programs, live, play and work in their home community of Mission. As our costs are not always covered by our government funders, we rely on community support through donations and fundraising efforts. Every donation, whatever the amount, remains in Mission. To learn more about MACL, visit us at www.missionacl.org and follow us on Facebook.

CORY’S 5 MOST FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT JAPAN
use naturally hot water from geothermally heated springs. Onsens are different from sento, indoor public bath houses where the baths are filled with heated tap water.
THE FESTIVALS
You won’t find California Rolls in Japan but what you will find is a variety of delicious traditional dishes including Curries, BBQ, Fish and Seafood, Soups, Noodles, and Street Foods like Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki and Croquettes. The Japanese insist on the freshest locally grown ingredients and take pride in regional specialties and recipes. Convenience Stores provide a vast assortment of yummy foods to go and are a must to experience with any visit to Japan. Japanese people also love coffee, hot & cold which is available almost everywhere including vending machines and convenience stores.
There are countless local festivals called matsuri in Japan with nearly every village, town and city as well as every local shrine. Most festivals are held annually and celebrate the shrine's deity or a seasonal or historical event. Some festival are held over several days and most include live cultural performances, food vendors, and an important element of Japanese festivals are processions featuring decorated floats, which are pulled through the town, accompanied by drum and flute music by the people sitting on the floats. Every festival has its own characteristics. While some festivals are calm and meditative, many are energetic and noisy. Some of Japan’s most famous festivals celebrate seasonal weather, local produce, local cuisine and fireworks!
THE NATURAL BEAUTY
THE PEOPLE
THE FOOD
While one might initially see visions of huge, busy cities, Japan also boasts some of the most beautiful natural landscapes that can be found. Majestic Mountain Ranges and Peaks, Colourful Seasonal Foliage and Spectacular Lakes & Rivers provide an unforgettable backdrop for a visit to the Japanese countryside and quickly become to focus of excursions including hikes, rail travel and photo ops!
THE ONSENS
An onsen is a Japanese hot spring; the term also extends to cover the bathing facilities and traditional inns frequently situated around a hot spring. As a volcanically active country, Japan has thousands of onsens scattered throughout all of its major islands. Onsens come in many types and shapes, including outdoor and indoor baths. Baths may be either publicly run by a municipality or privately, often as part of a hotel, ryokan, or bed and breakfast. Traditionally, onsens were located outdoors, although a large number of inns have now built indoor bathing facilities as well. Nowadays, as most households have their own bath, the number of traditional public baths has decreased, but the number of sightseeing hot spring towns has increased. Onsens by definition

Japanese people are among the most kind, generous and helpful people anywhere. While many are shy at first, if given the opportunity to be of assistance or contribute in a meaningful way, the Japanese will go out of their way to do whatever they can to help. Community responsibility and respect for one’s self, one’s environment and one another provide the foundation for a society with a sense of peace and harmony. Take every opportunity that presents itself to spend time getting to know the people of Japan - you might just end up with wonderful, lifelong friends! Join Cory as he tells stories of their 2018 adventures in Japan on Tuesday, May 14th at the English Tarts on 1st Ave in Mission. Cory will share stories of unexpected experiences, photos and answer questions from 7:30 - 9pm. Doors will open at 7pm with admission by donation to support the creation of a Japanese Tour Company based in Mission. The English Tarts will have coffee, tea and desserts available for purchase. Getting an Early Start on Selling your Home You’ve probably heard the expression, “The early-bird gets the worm.” It refers, of course, to those who get in early and reap the rewards. For example, if you arrive early to a retail store for a big blowout sale, you’re likely to get the deals before the inventory runs out. The stragglers who come later miss out. Well, this same wisdom can be applied to selling your home. Starting the process early — even if that means simply doing some initial planning — gives you the edge in several ways. First of all, you get extra time for preparation. That means you can get your home cleaned, uncluttered and staged without feeling rushed. You also get more time to find out how much your property will likely sell for on today’s market. That’s important information, especially if you’re also looking to finance a new home. Secondly, there’s less stress. You’ll have more time to make the right decisions. The last thing you want is to be scrambling around, last minute, trying to get your home ready for sale. Finally, with your initial preparations done, you’ll be able to put your home on the market at a moment’s notice. That’s a huge advantage that’s likely to lead to selling your property more quickly and for the best price. In fact, by getting an early start on the process, you might even find that right now is the best time to list -- and you’ll be able to do so, with confidence.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know? Self employed individuals have until
Monday, June 17, 2019 to file their 2018 personal tax returns, but any amounts owing must still be paid by April 30th, 2019.
Did you know? If you rent out one or more rooms in
your home (Airbnb), or if you own a rental property, there are many expenses that can be deducted in calculating your net rental income.
Did you know? If you change the use of your principal residence to a rental home, or change your rental home to a principal residence, it can result in a deemed disposition for tax purposes. This means that you may be considered to have sold your home and repurchased it immediately thereafter for fair market value. You need to report this on your income tax return. Did you know? In the March 19, 2019 Federal budget that the withdrawal limits for the RRSP Home Buyers’ Plan is increased to $35,000. Did you know?
If your income exceeds the Old Age Security (OAS) claw back threshold level, (maybe this year you withdrew a large amount of your RRSP or had a large capital gain) the amount of the claw back
38
will be deducted on your tax return as a social benefits repayment. This reduces your taxable income so that you are not taxed on the amount being paid back. In the following year, your OAS payments will be reduced by the same amount as the OAS claw back from the previous year. The amount deducted from your OAS is called OAS recovery tax. The recovery tax is treated like an income tax installment. When you receive your OAS tax slip the amount clawed back will be shown on the slip as income tax deducted and will show on your tax return as income tax that you have already paid.
Did you know? June 1, 2019 minimum wage goes up to $13.85 an hour ($1.20 increase)
Did you know? CRA will never threaten you with jail, never ask you to pay by gift cards and never send you a text or email offering a refund.

What’s On! In the Community Emma’s Acres & L.I.N.C. L.I.N.C. (Long-term Inmates Now in the Community) is a non-profit registered charity founded by Mission resident Glen Flett in 1992. L.I.N.C. works with all people impacted by the criminal justice system including: offenders, victims/survivors and the wider community. Being accountable for one's actions and giving back are key elements of the L.I.N.C. philosophy. Glen, who is a “lifer” on full parole, believes that "a person is less likely to rob and steal in a community where they have a vested interest." L.I.N.C. members have volunteered at events such as: The Mission Soapbox Derby, Adopt a Block cleanups and the Mission Folk Festival. The Society manages the Soapbox community garden located north of the Leisure Centre. In its 21st year, the L.I.N.C. Clean and Sober Christmas dinner is the largest free sit-down Christmas dinner in Mission. Emma's Acres, L.I.N.C.'s award winning agricultural social enterprise, is located at 34890 Cemetery Avenue in Mission. Featured on the CBC National in October 2016, Emma's Acres won the Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Award for innovative initiative in 2017 and the Community Builder Award from the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2018. Offenders and victims work alongside each other all year round, growing nonspray, non-GMO, vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers on six acres of land leased from the District of Mission. Honey comes from the 5 beehives located at Emma's Acres. There are also free-range eggs from hens living on the farm. Emma's Acres produce, honey and eggs can be bought on site or at the Mission City Farmers market on Saturdays, at Fruits and Greens and Leo’s Market. It is also featured in dishes created at the BlackBerry Kitchen. At the site, traditional medicines are grown at Georgina's Medicine Garden-named in honour of L.I.N.C. member Georgina Faith Papin. Free long table dinners are held at Emma's Acres twice a year in June and September. Here is a link to the latest documentary on Emma's Acres on YouTube: https://youtu.be/4hF4m517v0o For more information on L.I.N.C. go to the website at www.lincsociety.bc.ca or phone 604-852-5514.
