PUBLISHER'S NOTE

PUBLISHER'S NOTE

Spring is in the year! After a cold, somewhat snowy and mostly rainy winter, there’s a sense of renewal as we start to see the little buds peeking through the grass. The year started off with a roaring 1920s themed Chamber Business Excellence celebration. I am honoured to have been nominated and thankful to have received the Award for Marketing & Communication. I’m so appreciative of the support of our community, which makes my job of cheerleading for Mission so very easy.

This issue is packed with many exciting events: Our first Downtown Art & Wine Walk, Women's Career Fair, BC Ukrainian Festival, the ongoing Art Exhibits at the Mission Arts Centre and the Mission Health Care Auxiliary’s 100th Year Celebration. We also have many opportunities to volunteer and give back to our community: Mission Community Foundation, Mission Environmental Stewardship Society, Hospital Auxiliary and The Hospice. Lastly, stop by and say hello to the new and old local businesses. You may be surprised at all that Mission has to offer.

Review

Every once in a while you discover a book that charms your socks off. You know that book. It’s the one you hold to your chest long after its done, a contented smile on your face. It’s the one that goes right back on your shelf after you’re done reading it, because you know, you KNOW, you’re going to read it again. This is one of those books. At least for me. Written by Dodie Smith, I Capture the Castle is told by seventeen-year old Cassandra Mortmain during 1932. Her father, acclaimed genius writer James Mortmain, suffers from a lengthy bout of writer’s block. While he waits for his muse to show up again, he spends his time eating more than his share of biscuits and doing crossword puzzles in the basement while his family lives in squalor in the broke-down castle above him.

palpable among the three women. And then it does. Glory hallelujah, two strangers arrive – two very eligible and rich strangers, in fact. What begins as friendship between Rose, Cassandra, Simon, and Neal quickly turns into love. But who loves who? And the question remains, will the late-great writer, James Mortmain, find his muse again and lift his family out of poverty, or will he need a little help? In “I Capture the Castle” author Dodie Smith uses her pen in such a way as to make this sixty year old story contemporary, while at the same time maintaining the delight of a time past. The story skips along, teetering with laughter, glee, and just downright good feeling, despite the difficult realities of life and love. Above all, it’s a story that will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

Penniless and hungry, Cassandra, sister Rose, and eccentric nudemoon-dancing stepmother, wander the castle, ever hopeful that father will write one more renowned novel. Until then, the only thing to take Cassandra’s mind off their plight is to record her days in a journal.

This, my friends, is a book for the shelves (and it’s on the shelves at Totally Book-ish right now). I Capture the Castle is on the BBC News’ list of the 100 most influential novels.

With humor and insight, she writes about their life within the walls of the (romantic?) old castle, capturing the difficulties of life, the joys, and the boredom! The desperation for something – anything! – to happen is

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS Memorial Services We host a memorial services once a year to remember your loved ones. Please contact Nathalie Millar for more information and dates. Pathways, Adults Support Group It’s not easy to understand or accept the death of someone we love. A grief support group is a group of people who come together to help each other through their grief journey. Some of the benefits of attending can include connecting with others who have gone through similar situations, associating with people who will listen without judgement, new ideas to help you cope and heal, time to share memories of the person who passed, and understanding what responses are natural and normal during grieving Women's Support Group The Mission Hospice Society hosts an ongoing weekly widow’s support group called Tea and Company, which is a weekly support group for women who have lost a spouse. This program runs Thursday at 10am in the resource room of the Mission Hospice Society. Circle of Friends, Children’s Grief Support Group This group is aimed at helping children deal with their grief and how to channel their grief in a positive way through crafts and sharing they learn to accept their loss and how to move on. The winter session begins January 24 and runs on Thursday from 3:30pm to 5:15pm in the Mission Hospice Society resource room Camp Zajac In July of every year we send Bereaved children to enjoy a few days of camp at Camp Zajac. Horseback riding, archery, kayaking are some of the great activities these children get to enjoy. All children, including those who have successfully gone through our Circle of Friends program are invited to attend the camp free of charge.

Walking Group Our walking group provides an opportunity to walk and talk, while meeting new people who share a common experience that can provide mutual support and acceptance. This program combines informal support with fresh air and exercise. Compassionate Friends This is a support group for bereaved parents offered by The Compassionate Friends Organization. They meet at the hospice office every second Monday of the Month. Richard Lepinsky is the trained facilitator for this Chapter. The mission of The Compassionate Friends: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. After Life Conversations This group has been meeting for over two years at the Mission Public Library on the first Monday of every month. This is an open group where people come together and talk about Near Death Experiences and the possibility of communications with their loved one after their passing. This is a very open minded group and does not follow any particular religion or spirituality but welcomes all beliefs. It is a safe place where people whom have lost a loved one can share their experiences without judgements or advice. Youth Children Support Groups - In School This group is for children between the ages of 12-14 who attend Middle School and have experienced some kind of loss, such as a person, pet, change in community or school, separation or divorce, or health. This support group is once a week for 8 weeks from 2-3pm. After the formal 8-week sessions, this group will convert to drop-in, and we will be available to further the discussion and offer support as the children require. We will have a therapy dog attend on one or more sessions and have activities, arts, and discussions relevant to this age group. This group will also enjoy a field trip and invitations to our other day camps. Mission Hospice Society 32180 Hillcrest Ave. Telephone: 604-826-2235 E-mail: info@missionhospice.bc.ca

Have you ever dreamed of going to Japan? Join the Mission International Cultural Association this October 2020 for an exciting Japanese experience! The District of Mission signed a sister city relationship agreement with Oyamacho, Shizuoka, Japan in 1996. Community leaders from Oyama initiated discussions with Mayor Randy Hawes as they felt that the similarities between the two communities warranted a special relationship; both communities are considered small to medium sized towns, have similar proximity to a major urban centre, and share geographic elements with major rivers and large mountain views. The relationship has developed into one of sharing cultural experiences and developing lifelong friendships through a series of 9 delegate visits with each delegation consisting of 20 to 30 community leaders and residents. Members of the Oyama International Friendship Association have extended an invitation to the members of the Mission International Cultural Association to visit Oyama in October of 2020. The basis of the visit will be to attend and participate in the Oyama Cultural Festival. The Mission/Oyama Cultural Exchange is an opportunity for citizens of Mission to share their experience and culture with citizens of Oyama. The delegation will likely be a 7 day stay in Oyama and will work via a “billeting system of accommodation, where participants stay with a family in Oyama for the duration of the exchange. OIFA organizes tours of the community and surrounding locations, and Mission citizens participate in activities intended to demonstrate aspects of Japanese culture. Outside of coordinated events, participants may also engage with their host family for tours of local points of interest or other activities. This exchange is open to any citizen of Mission who is over 18 years of age (or receives special permission from MICA and OIFA). Exchange participants are required to pay their own transportation costs to Japan (this will be coordinated with a travel agency instead of each participant organizing their own transportation). Also, participants will be expected to manage their own spending money (a good lower limit to expect is Y5000/day, or approximately $50CDN/day). Participants will also need to participate in a number of preparation meetings with MICA prior to the exchange. These meetings are expected to begin in April 2020, and will likely increase in frequency as we get closer to the exchange. When in Oyama, participants will need to engage in cultural exchange events, which will include tours, cultural demonstrations and activities, and performances (both by Oyama and Mission citizens). Above all, participants must remember that they are guests of OIFA and Oyama, and are representatives of Mission in every aspect. Those interested in joining MICA for this unforgettable cultural experience are invited to email MICA Chairman Anastasia Haley at info@missionica.com and visit the Mission International Cultural Association on Facebook. Deadline to apply for this incredible opportunity is May 1st, 2020.

What to Fix Up in your Home before You Sell If you have a home that is overdue for a renovation, you might be worried that it will be difficult to sell as a "fixer-upper". In fact, you might delay listing your property for that reason. The good news is, you don’t need to fix up everything in your home to prepare it for sale. You can be selective and choose only those projects that are most likely to help your home show well and sell quickly.

HERE ARE SOME PROJECTS TO CONSIDER: • Painting. Painting is one of the easiest and most affordable DIY projects you can do. Yet the impact it can have on your home is stunning. Some rooms are completely transformed by a fresh coat of paint. • Kitchens & Bathrooms. Buyers love to see great looking kitchens and bathrooms. In fact, there are even magazines devoted just to those rooms! You don't necessarily need to do a major renovation of these spaces, but a makeover can be a good idea. Consider replacing sinks, countertops, and/or cabinet hardware. • Floors. If the floors in any of your rooms have become worn and unsightly, look at options for refreshing them. Consider replacing carpeting, refinishing hardwood, and/or getting tiles professionally cleaned and polished.

CONFIDENTIAL ONSITE SHREDDING

SHRED-A-THON BY DONATION

SATURDAY, MAY 2nd

• Outdoors. Sometimes you can compensate (a little) for a less-than-ideal interior by sprucing up the outdoor space. Explore ways to improve your deck or patio, walkways, and landscaping. Even if your home is older, you can make it more attractive to buyers with any one of these projects. Want more ideas for finding eager buyers for your home? Call today 604-615-6446

Serenata at 20 On Tuesday, January 11th, 2000, 20 women met in the sanctuary of St. Andrew's United Church for the first rehearsal of the choir that became the Serenata Singers. Twenty years later, on Tuesday, January 7th, 2020, Serenata began rehearsing for their 20th anniversary concert. But what/who is Serenata? Serenata is an unauditioned community women's choir based in Mission, and drawing its members from around the Central Fraser Valley. Some of us have a wealth of experience singing and some of us are coming with brand new eyes (and ears and voices). In the past 20 years over 250 women have sung with us – some for a single concert; some for all 20 years!

2019

Serenata is a community – sisters, daughters, mothers, and grandmothers. Some of us grew up in Mission, others have come from far away. We are accountants, students, nurses, teachers, judges, retirees and more, drawn together by the love of singing, and the challenge of collectively creating something beautiful. Serenata is known for inventive programming. At any given concert you will hear music that crosses centuries, cultures, and genres – 10th century chant, 21st century art songs, and everything in between. We have sung in over 30 languages (with a record 12 in one memorable concert). Everything is sung with passion, spirit and joy. Finally, Serenata is celebrating. We are celebrating 20 years of singing. 20 years of friendship. 20 years of performing in our community. And we would love to have you join us on May 3rd for our 20th anniversary concert – “Will the Circle be Unbroken”.

Safe Fu Fun In Th he Amazing g Sun!

Great Sun Tips from the Skin Experts at Satin Laser Spa

Warm breezes and sunny skies...ahhh, spring is in the air. After a long winter, our bodies, minds and souls are craving the warmth that is upon us. Maybe you are jumping ahead and flying somewhere tropical for spring break? While we all love spending time outdoors in wonderful weather, we must always remember to protect our bodies as well as our skin during hotter months and travels. Here are some fantastic tips to get you through spring break and beyond: Be sure to stay hydrated when enjoying activities outside in hotter weather. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water each day (and more when you're especially active in warmer weather) will ensure that your body and brain will get the water they need to function properly, and your skin will look amazing. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Since we know that sun exposure causes dreaded skin damage such as: deeper wrinkles, dry blotchy skin, broken capillaries (spider veins), unsightly age spots (brown spots) and even worse various forms of skin cancer, it's very important that you wear protective covering and limit your time outdoors during peak sun hours. Use sunscreen daily. Using a dermatologist grade, high zinc oxide SPF 50 sunscreen every time you are outdoors will protect your skin, especially during times of prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful rays. It will help keep your skin looking healthier and younger much, much longer. Want to be the youngest looking person in your posy? Then a good sunscreen is a must!

Another question we get asked a lot is “Should I wear my sunscreen when it is overcast?” We always advise a strong yes if you will be outside for an activity, ie a walk, a soccer game, etc. We have had clients that have gotten severe burns on their face and top of their head during an outdoor soccer game in very overcast conditions. Always fully remove your sunscreen at night. To avoid clogging pores it is necessary to keep a good evening skincare routine of washing off debris and sunscreen from your face and body before sleeping. Put on your favourite calming or anti-aging serums and moisturizers and wake up looking refreshed and rejuvenated. Vitamin C Serum Tips While vitamin C in your daily serum has amazing benefits for your skin, using it prior to sun exposure increases your sun sensitivity and therefore MUST be followed with a good sunscreen. But here’s the clincher: when used together with a good sunscreen it actually boosts the effects of your sunscreen. Alternatively, using your vitamin C serum after sun exposure, i.e. during your evening skincare routine, has wonderful anti-inflammatory benefits, stimulates collagen production and helps reduce brown spots. It is a resounding Morning and Evening recommendation from us on this youth enhancing serum. To Pre-tan or Not to Pre-tan? This one gets a resounding NO. Pre-tanning does not lessen your chances of getting a sunburn while on vacation, or anytime for that matter. It definitely does increase your risk of melanoma. Instead just use a great sunscreen. Yes, you will get a sun kiss while using a good sunscreen, but not a burn or worse. Following the sun care tips above are your best bet for looking and feeling amazing on vacation and beyond! Not sure which is the ideal sunscreen, skincare product or service to protect you and your family? Call the experts at Satin Laser Spa for a professional recommendation and complimentary skin analysis.

Mission’s Waterfront Revitalization Initiative Many attempts at developing the Mission Waterfront have been made over the last few decades and we are pleased to be moving this ambitious initiative closer to reality than ever before! Technical studies have been completed and we have established a strategic plan based on the completion of other globally successful waterfront revitalizations. Working collaboratively with landowners and building true partnerships with senior levels of government, various industries, the business community, First Nations and the community, we are excited to share our progress with you! With nearly 296 acres of land identified in the recently introduced Waterfront Comprehensive Planning Area council report, the waterfront offers exciting opportunities to redefine Mission’s identity. In addition to objectives identified in the Official Community Plan, Council recently refined the vision for the waterfront to ensure it incorporates the following guiding principles for revitalization of this important community asset: For more information, please visit: www.mission.ca/waterfront District of Mission, Economic Development 604-820-3789

OUR ECONOMY Through increased industry, employment and job-training partnerships for a strong local economy.

TRANSPORTATION AND TRANSIT A new Transit Hub comprised of improved transit, rail and shipping along with the implementation of an Active Transportation Strategy.

HOUSING The opportunity to live on the waterfront. As well, in response to identified diversity and need, coupled with a projected population increase, there will be the creation of sufficient affordable housing.

ENVIRONMENTAL FOCUS The opportunity to build a community centered around green, sustainable and climate resilient infrastructure through alignment with the CleanBC priorities.

SPRING

Someone recently alerted me to the difference between living in a community and living in community. The first is all about the buildings, streets and structures; the latter is the people, the culture, the “personality” of a village or town.

I frequently walk along First Avenue – where our constituency office is located – and will have people greet me and acknowledge that I am their MLA. That would not be the case in urban centers such as Vancouver or Burnaby. Making friends is also less of a challenge in a mediumsized and long-standing community like Mission. We know that friendships are important for our mental health and allows us to share our lives with people who care. Personal security is also nurtured when there are neighbors who are aware of our work and travel schedules and can be available to watch our homes. Of course, we can reciprocate appropriately when our neighbors are away. Perhaps you are thinking, I don’t always feel connected and I have yet to make friends. We’ve all been there. A few suggestions: be proactive in introducing yourself to people in your neighborhood or apartment/condo complex. Joining a club or volunteering can also be a great way to connect with people. Mission Community Services is an excellent resource for finding ways to contribute to the community and meet like-minded people: their staff who would be happy to meet you. Mission is the kind of community that nurtures relationships and values involvement. Get connected – and you’ll be surprised how quickly you will feel at home. Living in community starts with you and me!

MORE INFORMATION

Here in Mission, we are a close knit community of people who care and look out for each other. Our size means we get to know our neighbors and often recognize people when shopping in local stores.

Q: Why is good posture important for my health? A: Good posture not only makes you look friendly and more confident, it also delivers increased energy, better breathing, easier digestion, improved circulation, and less wear and tear on your joints. It’s an investment in both your appearance and your health. The secret to good posture is maintaining the spine’s natural curves. If your spine is not properly aligned, your muscles and ligaments have to work harder to keep you upright and this can result in strain and pain. Q: Can I visit Dr. Marcy for chiropractic care during my pregnancy?
