PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Happy New Year! With the beginning of a new year, everyone decides it’s time to purge their old habits and start anew. We all feel the need to get rid of unwanted pounds, clothes or things we deem unnecessary in our lives. This January, as I look back on 2017, what came over me was not the desire to get rid of everything from last year or to forget any hardships encountered; but rather, the need to embrace all these experiences. For out of all these experiences, I am who I am today because of them.
As I step into the new year and into this new role as the Publisher at What’s On! Mission, I also want to embrace the old traditions, stories and people that have made Mission what it is. And at the same time, I’m looking forward to building on them and seeing the new and exciting things happening in our growing Mission.

R A E Y Y P P HA ! G O D E H T OF According to the Chinese Zodiac, February 18, marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog. If you were born in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, your Chinese zodiac is the faithful dog.
Congratulations, g , Scruffy! y
Dogs are dubbed "man's best friend" for good reason. Ask any dog owner why they love their pooch and you will see their eyes light up as they talk about their dog's unwavering loyalty. Dogs please us, protect us and console us. There is nothing more wonderful than coming home to your dog. Whether you've been gone for 15 minutes or a whole day, you are showered with a genuine excitement and endless kisses. To celebrate your faithful companions, Mr. Pet’s is giving a $200 Gift Basket to a randomly chosen pooch. Because of the overwhelming response of beautiful dog photos, we will continue to share some of the entries throughout the year:

ebruary rolls around and everyone is scrambling to find the perfect gift to show their love. We all love to receive flowers or gifts, but remember that love comes in many different forms and gestures. I see it when a mother or father survives on a few hours of sleep, but still gets up at the crack of dawn to do something for their child. I see it when, even after 40 years of marriage, a couple still holds hands when they are walking down the street. I see it when someone will drive all night to show up to surprise their girlfriend or boyfriend, just because.

A Condo Can Be an Ideal Income Property Regardless of whether you live in a house or condo, owning an income producing condo can prove to be a very savvy real estate investment. Condos can be attractive investments because they usually require very little maintenance by the owner. However, managing an income property is not as easy as offering a short-term rental on your principal or vacation property. In many cases, legal agreements, bylaw compliance and condo rules and regulations come into play. Also, you will need to decide whether to be a hands-on landlord, RU WR KLUH D SURSHUW\ PDQDJHPHQW ÀUP WR KDQGOH D YDULHW\ RI services, including dealing with tenants. Property managers can relieve you of handling most of the time-consuming aspects of landlord/ tenant relations, including interviewing prospective tenants, collecting rent and managing routine repairs. However, hiring a property manager will not exempt you from your obligations as the condo owner, and your requirement to comply with condo corporation rules. It is also important to note that management fees added to condo fees will affect your monthly net income. I’d be happy to meet with you to discuss further. Call me direct 604-615-6446

Ed Williams’ Community Christmas Dinner
Christmas is a time of family traditions, be it a certain food for dinner; a family activity; or a gift that gets handed down from generation to generation. Ed Williams remembers Christmas dinners surrounded by strangers and neighbours. His mother would open her doors every Christmas and feed anyone who happened to stop by, whether they needed a warm meal, a jacket, or a friendly hug for the holidays. About eight years ago, due to illness, his mother was unable to continue this tradition. So, Ed and his wife Cathy have continued to open their doors and hearts every Christmas; their daughter Sherry baking pies for dessert and other family members pitching in to help. Year after year, out of their three-bedroom home, they would feed up to 100 people, never asking for anything in return. This past Christmas, because of Ed's health issues, Pastor Ken opened up Bethel Church and volunteered his congregation to help Ed accommodate almost 400 people to a 2 pm and a 6 pm seating dinner.
Looking at the empty plates and happy faces, dinner was a success.
