Spring Lawn Care 101 Well folks, spring is almost here and that means it’s time to start working on our lawns. For those of you that want a lush, green lawn when summer rolls around but are not sure how to achieve that, the helpful people at RONA are here to tell you how. Step 1: Remove thatch and patch bare spots. Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots which accumulate between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath. This can be removed by using a stiff, long handled lawn rake. If bare spots occur, you may have to re-seed. Step 2: Lime to raise the pH balance of the soil. Winter rains wash away nutrients and make soil more acidic. A soil’s pH is the measure of its acidity and alkalinity. Grass likes a sweeter, more alkaline soil. The way to make soil less acidic is to add lime. Dolomite and DoloPril lime are the two most popular varieties. Test your soil using a ph test kit. If the soil lower than 6.2, it should be corrected with lime. Step 3: Moss-Control. After liming is the best time to apply a moss-control fertilizer. However, since moss will still have to be raked away after it dies, and may even return, the best

moss-control is to change the conditions where moss is growing. Decreasing your soil’s acidity, improving lawn drainage, and increasing natural light where possible are the best ways to reduce moss growth. Also, after raking up dead moss, sprinkling sand on the spots will help prevent regrowth. Step 4: Fertilize with care. Fertilizer can help your lawn grow thick and lush, but if it’s not used properly, it can actually damage the grass. A slow-release nitrogen fertilizer is best, and no more than 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) of nitrogen should be spread per 1,000 square feet (93 square meters). It should be applied early in the season when the turf begins actively growing, but be careful; using too much fertilizer or a fertilizer too rich in nitrogen will cause your grass to burn, and therefore undo all your hard work. Compost is a great alternative to chemical fertilizer as it won’t burn your grass and is much safer for the handler and the environment. So why bother? Lawns are worth the work. You will be rewarded with an ideal surface to have picnics on or to play any number of summertime backyard games (Bocce ball anyone?) At the very least, lawns provide a still, green, surrounding to enjoy all summer long. For more advice on lawn care, or any other project you have this spring, come visit the friendly helpful staff at Fraser Valley RONA.

The Ultimate Tribute to

The Everly Brothers & Simon and Garfunkel Byrd Dawg Starring Joel Dietrich and Wayne Rempel

Friday, April 8 – 7:30 pm Clark Theatre Tickets: OnTourTickets.com Phone: 1.855.411.7500

They are all true artists and complement Byrd Dawg perfectly! Do you have a personal favourite song of the artists you pay tribute to?

Describe your current show? Joel: It’s an evening of music from the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel. It’s a show that has audiences smiling, cheering, and singing along. It’s a show full of songs that the audience knows... Wake Up Little Susie, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Bye Bye Love, Sound of Silence, The Boxer, and on and on! People have remarked after the shows about how they’ve been singing the songs all the way out to the parking lot and beyond! I know people are going to have fun and be glad they came!

Joel: Hmmmm.....that’s a tough one. There are so many good ones. I quite like the Everly’s “Let It Be Meâ€?. It’s just a beautiful song. For Simon and *DUIXQNHO DJDLQ WKDWȇV GLÉ? FXOW ČŠ+RPHZDUG Boundâ€? and “Bridge Over Troubled Waterâ€? really speak to me. Wayne: It’s hard to pick a favourite, but from the Everly Brothers it would probably be All I Have To Do Is Dream. From Simon and Garfunkel it would be Homeward Bound. Both those songs have captivated me since I was young.

How did you choose in particular the Everly Brothers & Simon and Garfunkel to pay tribute to? Wayne: I’ve always loved the Everly Brothers and when Joel and I discovered we had a nice vocal blend I suggested we should try some Everly Brothers. Joel grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel and suggested we learn some of their music as they were heavily LQȾ XHQFHG E\ WKH (YHUO\ %URWKHUV /DWHU ZH thought it would be a good idea to pay tribute to these two iconic duos, as there is such a strong link between them. They even toured together at one point. You’re backed up by THE VINTAGE ELECTRIC BAND. What can you tell us about them? Joel: We have put together an amazing four piece band who have a passion for this music!

L

ately, Downtown Mission has been a hot topic in social media. What people may not realize is that opinions, good and bad, shared on social media about Downtown Mission affect Mission as a whole.

Here are some facts to consider: • Downtown Mission boasts over 100 locally owned businesses: eateries, groceries, clothing stores, service providers, entertainment venues, galleries and more. • Our businesses employ well over 500 people, many of whom are Mission residents. • Despite the current economic situation, our vacancy rate is below the Fraser Valley average of 20%, which means more businesses for you to enjoy. • Shopping local is a green way to shop! The less you drive, the better is it for our environment • Do you want to save money? Shop local! Our merchants price their merchandise competitively; they want your business! As well, a cheaper price might be over the bridge or across the border, but once you consider the cost of gas, and the time is takes, you may actually have lost money. • Money spent at a local merchant stays in Mission; that money goes toward other local businesses, strengthening our local economy, and creating more jobs

D

aily, our merchants serve Mission residents who admit they’ve never been Downtown. They are pleasantly surprised by how friendly our merchants are, how clean it is, and how good to it feels to support a local business in their community, and not a store across the bridge.

So before you choose to shop out of town, support a Mission business! You’ll be so glad you did.

! COMING IN MAY... WHAT’S ON! COQUITLAM SOUTH!!! Meet James Corea the new Owner Publisher of What’s On! Coquitlam South blisher James Corea, Owner Pu uth What’s On! Coquitlam So

“My family, consisting of my wife, three daughters and I arrived in Canada on the nines. The 9th day, of the 9th month, of 2009. Coming to Canada my goal was always to be in the media industry as it was my background in Trinidad & Tobago. After working for two of the largest and wonderful media organizations in Canada, Corus Entertainment, owner of radio stations including i l di CKNW and d CFOX, CFOX and d Glacier Gl i Media, M owner of newspapers including the former TriCities Now, the TriCity News and the Burnaby Now, the opportunity has presented itself for me to utilize the training and experience that I have received, and marry that with the world of entertainment that I have always loved. Being an avid movie buff, even at one point hosting my own movie review website, having this magazine will be a great way to marry my expertise of media sales, with my love of the entertainment industry, that includes movies, music and local events. Also, being an entrepreneur in the industry that I have known for more than two decades will mean that it is more than just a job for me. I will be doing something that I intensely love to do. And I’m glad to realize that dream with What’s On! Coquitlam South. Working with Glacier Media I was able to work within the Coquitlam community and assist in producing publications including the Coquitlam Program Guide put out by the City of Coquitlam, the TriCities Health Guide, and the TriCities Chamber of Commerce Map, so getting to know the various business and establishing those connections and servicing their needs are a great part of why I look forward to providing a new outlet to help them establish their goals. I’m also looking forward to meeting all the community groups in a community I love and am proud to call home! Our Mission Statement: To provide an entertaining voice to the community and to deliver a viable additional outlet for local businesses to reach and interact with potential customers.

To get into the historical launch issue please contact James on 778-938-2413 or e-mail info@coquitlamsouth.ca Got a great community event happening in Coquitlam? Give James a call or drop him an email, he’d love to hear from you!
