Athena, Marketing Guru In a world of invites, likes, shares, and content-flooded social walls, it’s easy to get ignored when marketing your business through social media. Social media marketing is just that; social. Don't treat followers as a number, you need j to engage and interact to keep them interested and on the sidelines ready to buy. When working with any business, I enforce the “60/40 Rule”. Release information, promotions, coupons, advertisements, and business related articles to your page 40% of the time. Reserve the 60% for posts such as inspirational images, sharable content, questions, giveaways, shout-outs, positive reviews, and selfies. Yes, I am telling you that posting a fun selfie of you on vacation or working away is okay! Find a way to let people really get to know you, the businessperson. Because, as sales expert Kendrick Shope said, “All things being equal, friends buy from friends. All things being unequal, friends buy from friends.” And finally, don’t forget to interact with your fans! A reply to their comment, question or review (good or bad) makes a fan feel important and helps to build a relationship. So don't forget the "social" in social media marketing, it'll help convert your fans into customers real quick.

A Walk in the Park You Won’t Forget! Do you love culture and heritage? Me too! Which is why I am excited to tell you about the pilot quest that’s been created for Mission BC at Fraser River Heritage Park. We use 3D augmented reality and geocaching, with your smartphone, to deliver this passport adventure to your family and friends.

Stacey Crawford, Economic 'HYHORSPHQW 2IÀ FHU District of Mission

You’ll experience interactive geocaching, trivia, and 3D augmented reality within this gorgeous park setting as you are taken on a guided walking tour through Mission’s local history. Look back in time and see one of the buildings that once existed at the park, as well as a sternwheeler travelling on the Fraser River. Photograph items and creatures that travel around the park such as an eagle, an energetic little farm animal and even that elusive Sasquatch! As I was guided through this entertaining 15-minute adventure, I gained a new awareness of how life was back when the river was a main source of transportation. I have a new sense of this park’s heritage and what used to be someone’s home and school. Heritage Park has an interesting history and I was happy to have fun while learning about it in such a cool way. Get started by downloading the free ‘QuestUpon’ app for iPhone or Android smartphones. Click on the ‘Sasquatch in Mission’ quest, and get ready for a walk in the park like you’ve never experienced before. QuestUpon was developed by PlayMobility, a company EDVHG LQ 0LVVLRQ WKDW WKH HFRQRPLF GHYHORSPHQW RIÀ FH KDV partnered with to help develop the local version of this app. 7KLV LV WKH À UVW TXHVW LQ 0LVVLRQ WKDW JDPLI\·V WKH UHDO ZRUOG to inspire an active lifestyle by combining geocaching and augmented reality into an outdoor adventure that delivers a unique experience that you will enjoy playing with your family and friends. And it only gets better – expect to see more quests in Mission when the full version is launched this summer!

Abstract Auto Window and Glass

WE’RE 40! History

It all started in 1975. After moving his new family to Mission from New Westminster, Dave quickly realized that commuting to Gastown on a 2 lane highway was not how he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Not only that, but Dave yearned to be his own boss. And so the dream of Abstract Glass became a reality. Opened in 1975 by Dave & Sheryl Mitchell, the business was originally located on N Railway St, where it thrived for four solid years. With its success it quickly required expansion, and was relocated to its current location at 32210 Lougheed Hwy (next to Superstore) in 1979. Servicing the Fraser Valley, Abstract Glass continues to be owned and operated by family - Dave & Sheryl Mitchell, son Nathan, and daughter Nicole.

Just a little about what we do We provide 24 hour emergency service. We specialize in all types of glass and mirrors. If it’s glass you need, we likely stock it in our 8000sqft building. We also carry a variety of window parts - handles, locks, vent wheels, screen clips, shower/tub door wheels, patio door handles and wheels. We stock plexiglass, lexan, neoceram (TM), patterned and obscured glass, and many others.

Recipes from The Blackberry Kitchen

The Blackberry Kitchen’s Chocolate Bliss This is a favourite dessert for many of our guests! Makes 12 generous portions.

Ingredients: 1 tsp. vanilla 4 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 2 cups white sugar DQG FXS DOO SXUSRVH Ă RXU 1/2 cup baking cocoa 1 tsp. salt 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions: In a mixing bowl, beat vanilla, oil, and eggs at medium speed for 1 PLQXWH 0HDQZKLOH LQ D VHSDUDWH ERZO FRPELQH WKH VXJDU Ă RXU cocoa and salt, using a sifter if you have one, if not mix together very well with a dry spoon. Add the dry mixture to the egg mixture and stir until blended. Stir in the chocolate chips. Pour into a greased 9x13â€? baking pan. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes. A toothpick inserted near the centre of the brownies comes out with moist crumbs (do not overbake). Cool on a wire rack and cut into squares. Tips: Change it up a bit by adding a half a cup of chopped nuts or maraschino cherries!

To make your dessert: Place your brownie square neatly in the middle of an individual serving plate. Centre a scoop of delicious Vanilla ice-cream on top of brownie. Then drizzle chocolate sauce one direction across the brownie and the plate, keeping the sauce about one inch from the edge of the plate. Next drizzle caramel sauce crosswise to the chocolate sauce. Dress this with a fresh mint leaf and a few scattered fresh berries for a special treat!

At Fraser River Heritage Park 7494 Mary St Breakfast and Lunch • Fully Licensed Majestic views of the Fraser Valley

Tip: Warm your brownies slightly in the microwave for 20 seconds a square or cover the full pan with foil and warm in 200° oven for about 10 minutes.

PREPARE! STAY SAFE! SURVIVE!

Backyard Pool Safety Backyard pools can provide many hours of summer fun, but they can also be dangerous. Owning a backyard pool or hot tub comes with the responsibility of ensuring its safe use. Most often, children who drown do so in a pool when a caregiver is not paying attention, if only for a second. These drownings primarily involve young children who gain access to a pool without a self-closing and self-latching gate. Tips: There are simple steps that families can follow to keep their backyard pools safe. • Build a fence that has a self-closing and self-latching gate; keep the gate closed with restricted access at all times. Refer to your municipal bylaws for fencing requirements. • Establish pool rules. These can include: swim with a buddy, children must have an adult with them at all times, and no glass containers around the pool. • Few backyard pools are safe for diving - swimmers should always enter WKH ZDWHU IHHW À UVW • Be prepared take a First Aid course • Have readily accessible reaching or throwing assists, a working phone DQG À UVW DLG NLW • Have an Action Plan including adult supervision, an emergency signal, safety equipment and emergency procedures. • Keep the deck clear of toys and debris. • Do not use alcohol or drugs in or around the pool. • Small on-ground portable or kiddie pools should be emptied when not in use. Above-ground pools should have the ladder or steps removed when not in use. • Hot tubs should not exceed 104° F or 40° C and are not recommended for pregnant women, toddlers or infants. Active adult supervision is of the utmost importance - never leave your child unattended, not even for a second. • Lifejackets or PFDs should be worn by weak or nonswimmers, but they are not substitutes for supervision by an adult with good swimming skills, or a lifeguard. • Enroll your children in Red Cross swimming lessons. • Adults who are weak swimmers should also take lessons, DQG KDYH À UVW DLG WUDLQLQJ • Take your children with you if you have to leave the pool for any reason

The classes we offer are diverse, allowing each crafter to create something completely unique, all the while emphasizing the basic techniques needed to expand one’s talents. Three different regular classes, along with the occasional special workshops offers potential students different options to suit their preferences. These three regular classes consist of crystal trees of life (Sun-catcher or 3-D on a stone base), and basic pendant-wrapping. They are held bi-weekly on Friday evenings. Wanting to join a workshop but can’t seem WR PDNH WKH VHW GDWHV" 7KDW·V MXVW À QH *DWKHU WRJHWKHU some friends and we will organize a class suited just for you! The sun catcher tree of life class is by far the most popular of our classes. These beautiful gemstone trees make such wonderful, thoughtful gifts for your friends and family- or even just yourself! They look simply wonderful in a window or a rear-view mirror. The workshop itself lasts approximately two and a half hours, and as always we provide all the materials needed. You even get to choose your own crystal beads!

The 3 dimensional tree of life adds a whole new element to the crystal trees. Not only do you get to add your own choice of gemstone leaves, you also get to pick out the perfect stone base from our large selection. This class is the most creative leaving so much room for unique ideas. Create a family tree with your family’s special birthstones, or a blossoming cherry tree with beautiful rose quartz! The possibilities are endless! As for the basic pendant workshop, this is the best class to get you on the road to creating your very own stone jewellery. Our students get to chose two different stones to wrap. Learn the foundations of wire-wrapping to begin a new hobby in this extremely diverse art. There are so many different ways to branch out in wire wrapping, from crocheting sterling silver, to weaving copper. In our fantastic store, we also have artists of our own! Our artisans are talented individuals who create beautiful orgone generators, stone turn-tables and coasters. Each piece is crafted with the utmost care and attention to every detail. We can even create custom pieces for your home, with any stone(s) of your choosing. Chose colours that match your home’s décor, or crystals that create a calming atmosphere. You can even use your family’s birthstones! Here at Earthtacular, we will nurture your creative nature - it’s all up to you! Hope to see you soon

Who is the Mission Association for Community Living (MACL)? MACL is Mission’s largest social service agency. We were formed in 1958 by a handful of parents who wanted to ensure educational opportunities were available to children with extra support needs. From its beginnings as a grassroots family-led organization, MACL has maintained a strong commitment to responding to the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities, children who require extra support, and their families. MACL is a place where children and adults of all abilities are supported along their journeys. Our vision is an inclusive and caring community where each person has choices, opportunity and a fulfilling quality of life. Our work is guided by our values, experience and history and draws from strong roots in the community. MACL recognizes the rights of everyone to have a full range of life choices; including access to education, affordable and appropriate housing, leisure options, gainful employment and participation in the community. We believe that a healthy community encourages the involvement of all citizens.

How does MACL support people with disabilities? MACL serves families, children and adults in the following ways: • Providing staffing, consultation and resources to allow children with extra needs to attend community childcare programs of the family’s choice; • Operating Sandcastle Preschool; an inclusive preschool program; • Ensuring screened caregivers to provide respite for families; • Offering Parent Support and through networking groups and educational opportunities; • Providing individual and shared support to children and youth with special needs; including support for behavioural challenges, life skills development and social skills development;

• Helping people find jobs and work experience in the community; • Operating licensed group homes that provide 24 hours/ day staff support; • Ensuring screened caregivers to provide homes for adults with developmental disabilities. How many people does MACL support? On average, about 450 people access MACL’s services each year. How many people work for MACL? MACL employs 150 staff and contracts with 40 screened caregivers. Why does MACL need to fundraise? While we receive core funding from Community Living BC and the Ministry for Children and Families, many programs are not fully funded. In the last three years, we have experienced a $70,000 cut to funding. In addition to those cuts, our funding from Community Living BC includes gaps of almost $200,000 annually. In order to deliver the quality programs and services MACL believes in, we rely on the generosity of individuals and corporations. Where does the money go? Every donation, whatever the amount, remains in the community of Mission and truly makes a difference in the lives of children and adults living with developmental disabilities, and their families. Funds raised last year helped purchase a van, accessible garden boxes at Sandcastle Preschool and subsidize Mission’s Special Olympics and Self Advocate group. How can I help? There are many ways to support MACL! Some ways include becoming a member, liking MACL on Facebook, buying a Welcome Summer Gala ticket, and/or make a one-time gift or monthly donation.

• Helping adults with disabilities learn how to be more independent; • Delivering pre-employment training through job clubs and job development;

MAC VOLUNTEER AMBASSADORS NEEDED June 2nd - June 20th Opening Reception June 6th 1 – 4 pm

As a non-profit organization the Mission Arts Council relies on a group of dedicated volunteers to operate the Rock Family Gallery and the Doris Paterson Tea Room. Our team of volunteers is essential to our commitment of providing unique, interactive and educational public programs for our community. We encourage our volunteers to utilize their special talents and work on pursuing interests in a manner that supports the activities of the MAC. We are seeking Ambassadors who would like to volunteer for four hours once a month in the Gallery and Tea room. Come with a friend. It’s a great way to spend time together. If a monthly commitment is not your thing, then how about spending some time at one of our events, like the Haunted Attraction, Children’s Festival or the Christmas Craft Market? There are several opportunities for you to choose.

Val’s work is an upbeat, happy visual comment on today’s pursuits of work and pleasure, coupled with her award winning style, gives Val Sewell a dynamic and exciting presence in the contemporary art world. Optimism and ‘joie de vivre’ shine through her subjects – the world and people around her – compelling the viewer to share this joy. As was once said of Val, “Finally we have a Canadian artist whose work is happy, who looks as if she is enjoying life.”

Please call 604-826-0029 or e-mail macart@shaw.ca for more information. We would love to hear from you!

Stone Soup Mission’s Mission for Community Collaboration on homelessness It’s no secret that homelessness is both increasingly visible and a growing concern in our community. Love Where You Live Contest: The goal of this

1st Place $500

program is to promote civic pride and environmental responsibility among Mission youth ages 12-18. Mission youth were invited to show us how they love their community by taking on an area that needs a little TLC. Whatever project chosen, participants had to document their project through before and after photos or 3-5min video.

Before

First Place- The Mission Lacrosse Box Goes Green! By: Shawn Lane Shawn Lane noticed that the Mission lacrosse box in Centennial Park needed a little attention to address recent vandalism and graffiti. He set to work involving the Municipality, friends and family. As he was working to prime and paint the box, members After of the community took notice and stopped to thank him. We too would like to extend Shawn a huge thank you for participating in Love Where You Live and for taking the time to make Mission a little more beautiful. Thank you!

Second Place- Lovin’ It! By: Neustaeter Family

2nd Place

Our Second Place winner for 2015 took $250 charge of an empty lot by their home that had been left to collect garbage and debris. Joining forces, the Neustaeter family turned a lot that was the worse for wear and gave it a much needed face lift by picking up recyclables, plastics and even doggie poop bags! Thank you Neustaeters for showing what it means to Love Where You Live! We would also like to join the family in recognizing Mackenzie’s demonstrated efforts to encourage active change and for picking such a lovely place to clean up for everyone to enjoy.

Hand Crafted Cedar Boxes Make great gifts!

Marie’s friends and family are Relaying because Marie has cancer.

WHO WILL YOU RELAY FOR?

3 years ago, Sean Baron was frustrated that his grandma’s flower boxes were rotting through every couple of years. He had an idea to produce a flower box for his grandma that would last longer than just a couple of years. He sourced quality cedar used in high end Japanese construction that would otherwise be shredded into sawdust and began producing handmade cedar boxes. He even took his idea to Dragon’s Den! Today, Sean produces custom order products as well as planter boxes, chests, bird houses, and more! Need a box? Call the Cedarbox Guy 604.787.9494
