7 Must Do Spring Inspections
E
xtreme winter weather can be hard on your home. Now that the worst is over and the summer season has not arrived, it is the perfect time to perform any needed maintenance and repair. The following is a list must do inspections in order to keep your investment safe and you life comfortable. Roof Examine your roof for any signs of damage. Replace shingles that are loose, torn, cracked, buckled, curled, missing granules or absent all together. Make sure all flashings are properly in place. Attic Search for signs of leaks, water damage and areas where insects and critters have colonized. Also, search aggressively for mold, which often takes the form of gray or black blotches. Proper insulation and good ventilation will deter mold growth in the attic, so take action now to prevent the problem from developing in the warmer months ahead. Windows Leakage around windows will admit warm summer air and let cooled indoor air escape, so be sure to check that any caulking and weather stripping you have in place has remained intact. If you experienced condensation inside the glass on doubleor triple-glazed windows during the winter months, that could mean the weather seal has been compromised, in which case either the glass or the window will need to be replaced.
Faucets Spring is a good time to check for leaky faucets especially going into summer when water can be scarce. Look for clogged drains and sweaty pipes. Check under kitchen and bathroom sinks to make sure connections on pipes and hoses are secure and sealed. Look for water stains around the dishwasher and check washer machine hoses for cracks, bulges or dampness. Walls Whether you have wood siding, stucco or ceramic, look for damaged areas, especially under eaves and near gutter downspouts. Water stains normally indicate that your gutters are not adequately containing roof runoff. With wood, check for any damaged areas or openings that clear the way for ants, wasps, woodpeckers and other unwanted intruders. Foundation Foundations often have small cracks that appear as houses settle over time. Most are harmless, however cracks larger than 1/8-inch should be watched carefully. Mark the ends with an erasable pencil line. Measure the width and write it down. If you notice the cracks are growing, you’ve got potential problems. If cracks are stable you can patch them with hydraulic cement or other foundation specific sealant. Deck and Patio Look for warped, loose or splintered boards, and do a good sweep to remove any leaves and debris that might have accumulated between boards. If the finish on your wood deck is faded or worn, now is the time to clean, stain, and reseal it. If you have composite decking, follow manufacturer's recommendations on seasonal care.

What’s On! Top I'm a jewelry designer and love to create Unique and Unusual Jewelry & Art Work. My studio is located in the beautiful yarn store “ Trendy or what Knot” in Downtown Mission. Mady, the store owner, had a great idea to open the back of the store to support local artist and made the space available to The Mission Weavers and Spinners Guild and to me. Last year I moved in and opened Studio KiKaBoe. Working with people who appreciate art and love to create makes a great atmosphere. I became a member of the Mission Guild and joined a wonderful group of people. In April we were involved in the exhibition “Fibres by the Fraser” at the Mission Art Centre. I decided to make a woven paper bowl and some wire/ bead woven jewelry. The paper bowl proved to be too simple,
and I thought the beautiful glossy paper from the “What's On Magazine" would work well for the project. I started making tubes from the paper, cutting and rolling to make tons of pipes. I worked with the pipes using a mannequin that was in storage for years. The creation came to life by itself. I started weaving and each piece found its own place. I had a blast and lost myself in my work, didn't want to eat or sleep, I just wanted to be in the moment, following my spirit. It's the best experiences you can have as an artist. It took a long time to complete but What’s On was ready for the Mission Arts Centre “Fibres by the Fraser” Interested in my Jewelry? Please visit Studio KiKaBoe at Trendy or What Knot Yarns & Gifts in Downtown Mission.

Over 28 years pushing dirt in the Fraser Valley and still going strong! In 1988, Tom Cassel was presented with an opportunity to make the transition from heavy equipment operator to owner/operator. His employer, Bob Kitsel was looking to retire and saw something in Tom that led him to offer Tom the opportunity to purchase the business. Tom grabbed the opportunity and ran with it - and he hasn’t looked back. TW Excavating Ltd was registered in the Spring of 1988. Primarily specializing in site prep, land clearing, and driveways, Tom worked as hard as he could building his business and his reputation as one of the most skilled and meticulous equipment operators in the Fraser Valley. Today, Tom specializes in the development of equestrian and bovine facilities as well as large scale drainage projects. He has worked all over the valley for hundreds of small and large property owners, contractors and developers and has become known as a specialist in what he does.
Tom takes pride in every job he works on and he works hard to provide long term solutions for his customers rather than leaving loose ends that will likely need to be addressed later. He believes that if you are going to do a job, then you had better do the very best job you can and be proud of the work you do - lessons he learned from his Dad back home on the farm. Tom loves meeting property owners and hearing the dreams they have for their properties. Considering a small, medium, or large project on your own property? Give Tom Cassel a call for a free estimate of your next project - you will be happy you did!

This year marks the 70th year of the Mission Soapbox Derby and the board has been working hard all year to create an event worthy of this anniversary. We are hoping to have a record turn out and encourage you all to save the date! Make this a family event to start your summer right. This year’s pre-race is scheduled for Saturday June 12 at the Mission Leisure Centre and the main event is scheduled for Saturday June 25th. If you do not have a car of your own, come down to the pre-race and we will ďŹ t your child to a car owned by the association. Photos by: www.daleklippenstein.com

Lighthouse Theatre presents p
Seussical Jr
“Oh, the thinks you can think!, the Cat in the Hat exclaims full of hope and wonder, to the young Whoville boy, JoJo, during the opening musical number of Seussical JR. It is with a parallel intensity that we as parents desire the best opportunities for our children, ones that will contribute to both their character and wellbeing, equipping them with a skill set to bring bright hope for their future. For the families of 41 local students enrolled in Lighthouse Theatre, Heritage Christian Online School’s (HCOS) musical theatre program, there is an irrefutable belief this goal is being achieved. Located in the Fraser Valley, Lighthouse Theatre is a dynamic group of Distributed Learning or homeschool students, ranging from Grades 2-12. They are an impressive group committed to a high standard of excellence from the acting, singing, and choreography to the costumes and spectacular set design. The essential goal of Lighthouse Theatre is to develop their students' God given gifts to achieve excellence in the performing arts, to His glory. Talented, they are. HCOS strives to provide quality educational choices with Christian values, which is evident with the innovative educational experiences they offer their student body. Lighthouse Theatre’s amazing Broadway style musical production stands tall among them.
Our desire is to use our passion for the arts to inspire another generation of young actors and actresses to JURZ LQ WKHLU DFWLQJ VNLOOV GHYHORS D UREXVW FRQÀGHQFH and a genuine love of the stage. Watching our students perform, bringing a show to life, is truly breathtaking." Sarah Goerzen and Nicole Farion, Artistic Directors. 7KH VSULQJ RI PDUNHG WKHLU ÀUVW SURGXFWLRQ $QQLH JR, which was well received. Then in 2015, both the cast size and audience grew with Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR, necessitating Lighthouse Theatre to locate to a larger venue for May 2016, for their production of Seussical JR. They are proud to now call the Clarke Theatre their home. You can still purchase tickets for the following shows: May 19-21 @ 7pm and Sat @ 2pm. It’s an event you won't want to miss. With Seussical JR's central message heralding, "a person's a person no matter how small", we encourage you to bring your family and friends, one and all. You are guaranteed to be wowed and have a ball, as the talent you will see in our community is tall. On behalf of Thing One and Thing Two, we bid you adieu - but before we do - here is more info for you:
theatre.onlineschool.ca
Spring 2013, Lighthouse Theatre was given life when HCOS came along side of two, young, talented women, actually sisters whom were once homeschoolers themselves, Sarah Goerzen and Nicole Farion. Raised in Mission, the girls were encouraged to pursue developing their gifts from a young age - Sarah excelled in dance, so she trained in all the major disciplines and now runs her own studio in Maple Ridge. Nicole Farion, blessed with a sweet voice which only few possess, honed her craft and is working to achieve the Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Voice, and now teaches private voice lessons from her home in Mission. All the while, both girls followed their passion for musical theatre, performing for 11 years with a theatre company in Maple Ridge. When Allana Lemke, support teacher with HCOS and now Executive Producer with Lighthouse Theatre, attended a showing of Through the Looking Glass, witnessing Nicole’s undeniable talents in her lead role of the Red Queen and Sarah’s unique skills choreographing the ballet sequences, she immediately understood why the Farions wanted to discuss the possibility of offering a musical theatre learning opportunity through HCOS for students in the Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Langley area. Over tea and coffee, Allana, Nicole, Sarah, and Arlene, their mother who’s equipped with a producing skill set, hammered out the details and Lighthouse Theatre was born. "The love of theatre was sparked in us at a young age and we are thrilled to be the Directors of Lighthouse Theatre.

Members of the Mission International Cultural Association hosted six students and 3 chaperons from Oyama - cho, Japan - Mission’s Sister City March 22nd - 29th. The students experienced teenage living in Mission with 6 homestay families who were fantastic hosts for our guests. Among the group were members of the Oyama International Friendship Association who enjoyed the sites of the Fraser Valley while busily preparing for MICA’s visit to Oyama this coming October. For more information regarding MICA and Mission’s Sister City relationship with Oyama, please visit Facebook - Mission International Cultural Association or email info@missionica.com.
