Spring and Summer Gardening: Preparing your soil With spring just around the corner and the planting season about to begin many retailers will start to display the early season plants that flourish in cooler weather and soon the local greenhouses will be opening for the beginning of the planting season. Prior to purchasing the tempting displays of bright and colourful plants, a good gardening tip is to prepare your soil for your new plants. Even the richest soil needs to nourishment on a yearly basis.
Required Tools:
Your choice of a: - Trowel - Garden hoe - Shovel - Tined garden rake Paper Recycle Bags for garden debris PH Soil Testing Kit Gardening Gloves – optional Additional Soil – to be determined based on individual garden needs Preparing your soil: 1. Use your rake to clean away any remaining plant debris from your garden bed 2. Use your shovel to dig up any stubborn root balls that were left behind 3. Collect all of the old plant debris into the paper recycle bags as they are accepted by most City Composting Programs. - When planting in gardening beds or planning in pots, a good housekeeping rule is to loosen the compacted soil that has settled over the fall and winter months. 4. Use your trowel, shovel or rake to dig down and loosen soil in your garden beds or containers - Loosening the soil will allow oxygen to seep into the deeper layers of your
soil and will allow you to evaluate the condition of the soil and determine what you will need to add to create the best growing soil for your plants. 5. Take a small sample of your soil and use the PH Test Kit test your soil’s PH levels - Now that you know your soils PH levels you can now determine what type of soil that can be added your exiting garden beds. 6. You can use a trowel, shovel or a rake to mix your new soil in to your garden beds. - The different types soil that can be added to garden beds or planter pots are organic compost, peat moss, pre-mixed soil, sandy loam and vermiculite.
Are your PH levels too high?
For soils that have high PH levels of 7.5 or higher, organic compost, peat moss and composted leaves are great soil additives as they are naturally more acidic and will help to balance your soils PH levels. Just remember to keep your soil type in mind when choosing your plants as some shrubs and plants thrive in alkaline soils like Potentilla shrubs, Lilac trees, and Delphiniums.
Low PH levels?
If you soil is too acidic or has a low PH levels, adding dolomite lime, bone meal, bloodmeal, or crushed oyster shells to your soil are excellent options to add to your garden beds or containers. There are a great many plants that flourish in soils that are slightly more acidic or has a PH range from 5.0 to 7.0, like tomatoes, beans, pumpkins, sunflowers, begonias; and shrubs like rhododendrons and azaleas.
Common Types of Soil: Organic compost: Compost can come in different types whether its organic plant based, mushroom based, sea-soil, or animal based compost. If you have dry, flakey soil you can increase the moisture holding capacity of your soil by adding compost, this will also increase your soils ability to hold and release nutrients that are needed for stimulating plant growth throughout the growing season. Not all composts will have the same nutrient levels, so always be sure of what your existing soils needs are and add the most suitable type of compost. Pre-Mixed Soil: Pre-mixed soil can come in many different varieties like pre-mixed potting soil, garden mix, premium container mix and top soil. These types of pre-mixes have different levels of soil composition and nutrient levels; and all have different levels of application depending on the needs of your current soil. Most pre-mixed soil will have an additive called vermiculite or pearlite which are excellent for increasing drainage in hard or heavy soil types. Peat Moss: Peat moss is an excellent additive for plants that thrive in acidic soil like Blueberries, Radishes and Azaleas. Due to the acidic nature of Peat moss it is also commonly added to the soil around Hydrangeas as acidic soil turns the blooms a brilliant blue colour. Peat Moss also has the ability of retaining high levels of moisture, as it can hold several times its own weight in water. If you have a very dry, loose soil Peat Moss can be added to help retain water during hot weather and reduce the frequency of water you would normally have to do.

Economic Development 2016 Year in Review 2016 saw the Mission Economic Development Department tasked with a number of key objectives which included business retention and expansion (BRE), marketing and communications, investment attraction and workforce development. Here are some of year’s highlights and accomplishments:
Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival Guide. • Social media saw 1,200 followers join us on Twitter, with over 175,000 tweet impressions. We regularly update the community through the District of Mission’s Facebook page and Mission What’s On Magazine.
• Twelve business tours were undertaken to give Mayor and Council a stronger understanding of the local business environment and associated opportunities and challenges facing our business community. Visits included Abstract Glass, Lumex Instruments and T-Lane Nation. Economic Development staff also joined the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce for their business walks, adding even further depth to local business engagement efforts.
• We worked with the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and tourism consultants to investigate the creation of a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) to oversee tourism for Mission. Until this strategy is finalized, we continue to sit on the Mission Tourism Committee and partner with the cooperative marketing group on the Scenic 7 route (from Coquitlam to Hope). The Mission Parks and Trails Guide was also updated and now includes Sayres Lake.
• Our marketing coverage included 26 blogs in the Biz-e-news (missionbizenews. ca), our web based publication for the business, investment and development community, gaining over 9,000 direct views. Articles focused on local business and project updates. Advertising included the Business in Vancouver Relocation Guide, Mission Visitor Guide and
• Project initiatives have included working on the Official Community Plan, creating a Waterfront pre-development planning process, working with landowners and investors to advance development interest with the Silverdale Lands, and developing an industrial land expansion strategy. • The
Façade
Improvement Grant applications saw three completions
with The Friendship Centre, Decode Escape Room and Powerhouse Apartments. • In line with the Districts commitment to technology-led growth, Telus began installing its fibre optic network, which will continue community wide until its estimated completion mid-2017. Additionally, the Economic Development Department partnered with the Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech to develop a regional tech development strategy, technology based job portal, and began work on the first Regional Fraser Valley Tech Forum. • The team worked with several large business owners to advance their expansion needs and continued to assist with the daily requests and queries of local businesses. • Mission saw 22 film productions, with a total of 58 film days in 2016, including Riverdale, Jingle All the Way and Scorched Earth; bringing an estimated $259,177.00 to the local economy. • The Economic Development Select Committee was reestablished as an advisory body to Council, with eleven appointments made. They made their first presentation to Council in October 2016, with focus areas including the Waterfront, industrial lands and improved transportation networks.

Walking Group Our walking group provides an opportunity to walk and talk, while meeting new people who share a common experience that can provide mutual support and acceptance. This program combines informal support with fresh air and exercise. Compassionate Friends This is a support group for bereaved parents offered by The Compassionate Friends Organization. They meet at the hospice office every second Monday of the Month. Richard Lepinsky is the trained facilitator for this Chapter. The mission of The Compassionate Friends: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. After Life Conversations This group has been meeting for over two years at the Mission Public Library on the first Monday of every month. This is an open group where people come together and talk about Near Death Experiences and the possibility of communications with their loved one after their passing. This is a very open minded group and does not follow any particular religion or spirituality but welcomes all beliefs. It is a safe place where people whom have lost a loved one can share their experiences without judgements or advice. True Sport is a values driven program that makes perfect sense for every age and every sport. W hy do Tr ue Spor t principles matter? The True Sport Principles express an approach to sport that the vast majority of Canadians already believe in and practice. Although widely embraced, these principles often go unspoken. So when they are violated — when people’s attitudes and actions threaten healthy and respectful competition — supporters of good sport can be caught off guard, unsure how to stand up for the sport they believe in.
The True Sport Principles are a rallying point for True Sport members — they are universal. The principles can be brought to life in any sport at any level, from playground to podium. An Olympic rowing squad can embrace these principles with the same sense of pride and purpose as an elementary school, an old-timers' league, or a community hockey arena. For sport to be truly good and have the opportunity to make the greatest difference, all seven of these principles need to be in play at all times, working in perfect balance with one another. All sports in Mission will be asking for member participation to

True Sport Principles Go for It -Always strive for excellence and rise to the challenge, but never at the expense of others. Discover how good you can be. Play Fair -Play honestly and obey the rules, in letter and spirit. Winning is only meaningful when competition is fair. Respect Others—Show respect for everyone involved in creating a sporting experience, both on the field and off. Win with dignity and lose with grace. Keep it Fun—Find the joy of sport and have a good time. Keep a positive attitude and look to make a positive difference, on the field and in your community. Stay Healthy—Place physical and mental health above all other considerations and avoid unsafe activities. Respect your body and keep in shape. Include Everyone—Share sport with others, regardless of creed, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or ability. Invite everyone into sport to make it more meaningful for the whole community. Give Back—Always remember the community that supports your sport and helps make it possible. Find ways to show your appreciation and help others get the most out of sport.

Reasons YOU Should Go to a Yoga Class:
Flexibility. Relaxation. Health & Wellness. When I ask people why they want to do yoga, these are three overwhelming responses. People want to stretch, relax and feel better.
Flexibility is important because
as we age, our bodies tighten up and get stiff, especially if we aren’t as physically active as we should be. On the other hand, some of us are active but don’t take the time to stretch after we run, hike or play sports. One of the most obvious signs of stiffness is pain, so when we regain flexibility and stretch our bodies in a yoga class it helps to reduce soreness. Our lives are busy and we are crunched for time, racing from one
thing to the next and Relaxation becomes an afterthought. Learning how to relax is an actual skill that you can practice during a yoga class. There are techniques and exercises that we do in class to relax your body and calm your mind that helps you worry less and get a better night’s sleep. It’s hard to live the life we want if our health is suffering. Science confirms that Yoga is good for our overall Health and has been proven to lower blood pressure, increase physical strength and relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression, just to name a few. Chances are that whatever it is that ails you, yoga will make you feel better.
Tracy Loffler is the owner of Unison Yoga in Mission and has been teaching yoga since 2002. She teaches with compassion, humour and open heart and is experienced working with people who are injured or have other physical limitations. All of her classes offer variations and modifications to accommodate “every body”. To learn more about Tracy and register for a class, visit www.unisonyoga.ca
(Note: it’s important to find the right class and teacher for you. There are many different types of yoga and not all yoga works for every body.) Trivia Answers: Harvey Stevenson, Sandy (Newsham) Maskiw, Glen Todd, Jerry Dugger in 2000 &Tyler Lorenz in 2007, Lawrence Beatty

June 4th Community picnic: CHILLI COOKOFF Outreach with Members If we don’t ask, how will we know? This question prompted Chamber Board and Staff to come up with the 2016 Business Walk concept, to reach out and personally speak to our members about Chamber programming and services. . The results of the 2016 Business walk provided us with many great insights, allowing us to strengthen relationships and build new ones. We are very happy to bring this important program back in 2017 June/July Business Walk Travel with the Chamber In 2016, the Mission Chamber along with the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Chamber, sent 38 members on a 11 day all-inclusive trip to China. Making an Offer in a Competitive Market Imagine finding a home you love, making an offer, and then finding out there are other competing offers on the table. Ouch. If you’re looking for a property in a competitive market, it is likely that there will be multiple offers. Even just one can create the risk that you’ll lose the home. So how do you make sure your offer is enticing enough to win over the seller? Here are some ideas: - Don’t make a low-ball offer. If you do, it might be dismissed and you probably won’t get another chance to bid — especially if the other competing offers are near the listing price. - Go in with a price high enough that the seller will be interested, but not so high as to be leaving money on the table. This is tricky and requires a savvy knowledge of the current market. - Have a REALTOR® present the offer on your behalf. A REALTOR® will know how to do so professionally, and in a manner that gives you the best chance of getting the home. In a competitive situation, working with a REALTOR® who is an expert on the local market — and a skilled negotiator — is crucial. Looking for a REALTOR® like that? Call today.
Rotary Foundation Celebrates 100 Years Members of the Rotary Club of Mission Mid-day participated in a celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation at The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford on January 31st. The event saw clubs from Abbotsford and Mission as well as the Fraser Valley Rotaract Club in attendance. District Governor Scott Dudley spoke and attendees were able to view the ‘Juvenile Iron Lung’, a machine used in the 1940’s and 50’s to fight polio, a cause that the Rotary Foundation has supported heavily over the past number of decades. Polio has all but been eradicated in most parts of the world which was celebrated by Rotarians at the event, who have given millions of dollars to fight the disease. The Rotary Club of Mission Mid-day meets weekly on Tuesdays from 11:45am - 1pm at Martin’s Downtown located at 33157 1st Ave. Join us for lunch and find out what all the fuss is about! REMEMBERING JIMMY LOGAN…
January / February 2017
A Great Friend. A Community Champion. We were very sad to hear of our good friend Jimmy Logan’s passing in February. Jimmy was one of our biggest fans and was featured on the cover of our last issue promoting his signature event, the annual Robbie Burns Supper in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Jimmy worked tirelessly as a volunteer of the Cancer Society and he will be greatly missed by all of the dedicated volunteers in the Mission office. We will all miss Jimmy - but we will remember his spirit and his charm.
