This past spring has seen so many changes and we are continuing to deal with the unexpected possibilities of what may come. One thing for sure is that despite orders to isolate or distance from one another, Mission as a community has felt closer than ever. We have found creative ways to celebrate birthdays, support our frontline workers, and shop through take-out and delivery options as a way of supporting our local businesses. As restrictions start to lift, the ‘I Love Mission’ campaign continues to support our community with their free resources and promotion. The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is keeping us connected to governments, funding and each other. Now, more than ever, Mission businesses need our help. Shop, eat and play local whenever possible. Visit or call the many businesses featured in this issue. Check out Tourism Mission’s Summer Staycation Contest on page 10. You can support local, have fun and win some great prizes! Our front cover features the COVID-19 Documentation Project launched by the Mission Community Archives in partnership with the Mission Museum. Aptly, titled “Life at TWO Metres: Mission, BC” - the New Normal - project’s purpose is to collect a compilation of personal accounts, photographs, audiovisual materials, printed materials, oral histories and 3 dimensional objects from local residents documenting how the pandemic has impacted life in Mission. The Mission Archives and Museum are wonderful resources in our community, recording our history so it can be appreciated by generations to come. They are both branches of the Mission District Historical Society, a charitable non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses. If you are interested in volunteering time or donating funds to help share the story of our community, visit www.missiondhs.com

WHAT’S ON!

MISSION ON TWO WHEELS It may not seem like it, but Mission is a town with a growing and thriving cycling scene. Home to long backroads with smooth pavement and little traffic, to hundreds of kms of logging roads as well as hundreds of kms of single-track trails in the City-managed Tree Farm License #26 - Mission has every cyclist’s dream ride on tap. From youngsters just learning to ride via Two Tired Tots, to elder cycling states people there is something for all ages too! One thing Mission has in spades - hills. And that does lead some to think that Mission isn’t a cyclist’s town. However, the Mission Community Cycling Coalition (M3C) has a saying - Mission Cyclists Do Hills. And today’s cyclist has a secret weapon to climb up Grand St, or Frog Hill - E-Bikes. Electricassist bicycles have hit the mainstream with all kinds of sizes and shapes and types of e-bikes to lend a hand gaining elevation. The best e-bikes are still bicycles at heart - they are pedal assist. You pedal, it powers. You stop, so does it. This means you still need to do the work, but you get a helping hand to make those mountains into mole hills.

Ave and Silverdale for some smooth pavement and hill repeats. Or else, if you love to gravel-grind, take a ride in Stave West and you can easily get in 50km of off-road riding with some amazing scenery and points of interest along the way. There are also dozens of kms of logging roads to explore with some incredible views in Steelhead up Hunter Rd. And finally - the trails. Mission has four main riding areas within the municipal boundary. Red and Bear Mountains are sister trail networks accessed at Mill Pond on Dewdney Trunk Rd. There is a local trail network adjacent to Heritage Park with 12kms of little loops and terrain of all kinds. And the legendary Woodlot trails are half in the Mission Tree Farm, with trails like Snakes and Ladders, Quick Hit and Cabin Trail part of Mission’s mountain biking legacy. All maintained by volunteer trailbuilders and managed by the Fraser Valley Mountain Biking Association (FVMBA). Good people doing great things in the community.

Depending on your flavour of cycling, a day on the pedals is best started downtown at the local bike shop. Get a coffee, a snack for your ride and anything else you need for your journey - or try one of those e-bikes you’ve heard so much about on a demo ride. From there, you can check out Keystone

My wife, Joy, was born (to Canadian parents) in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South America. She lived there for 16 years before moving to BC with her family to attend university and begin her career as a teacher. I visited Bolivia and can affirm what Joy would tell me, that Bolivians are very proud of their country; in fact, on their special holiday , Simon Bolivar Day, they have a significant annual celebration with parades, bands and tributes to Bolivar as the liberator of their country, among others. I think sometimes we Canadians can learn from Bolivians. We have such an amazing country, with incredible scenery, vast forests and tremendous resources. And, we have three coastlines, unlike Bolivia, which is land-locked Even closer to home, I wonder if we can sometimes take our area and community for granted. Here in Mission, we have so much for which to be thankful. There are magnificent vistas in every direction and Mt. Baker always feels like “our mountain.” The incredible Fraser River is at our doorstep and we can easily forget that it is the most significant river in BC. The Fraser is home to all five varieties of salmon, as well as the steelhead, sturgeon, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. Lakes are never far away. Well-known Stave Lake is large, at 55 sq. km. There are many opportunities to swim in smaller lakes such as Hayward, Rolley and Sayres. Of course, Harrison Lake, just a half hour drive, is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Opportunities for family outings are numerous – notwithstanding the current COVID-19 restrictions which will likely be moderated. Cascade Falls, draws visitors from throughout the Lower Mainland, as does Westminster Abbey, which is synonymous with the community and features amazing views of much of Deroche, Dewdney and Matsqui Prairie. The Fraser River Heritage Park also offers some excellent views of the river and beyond. In the heart of town is the Mission Museum which successfully preserves the heritage of the community. There are many locally-owned and national restaurants which offer a wide variety of menu choices. Nu umerous stores selling all manner of clothing, accessories and giftss/jewelry, are everywhere. We even have our own automobile deale ership! So, I hope I have convinced you that we should re-new our pride in Mission. Let’s never take ourr community for granted for so many reasons! Be an ambassador – tell the “Mission story” to anyone you me eet!

MISSION SPOTLIGHT:

The Happy Homesteader Meet Allan and Lorna‌ you may know them as your neighbours, friends and family, but they are also local business owners in Downtown Mission, a couple of ‘Happy Homesteaders’. Together, they want to show Mission what homesteading is all about. Homesteading refers to a lifestyle of self-sufficiency, otherwise known as ‘getting back to basics’. It’s centred around agriculture, food pickling and preservation, home brewing, sausage making, bread baking, and of course, beekeeping. Allan is one of Mission’s resident beekeepers, boasting 8 hives in his apiary. With his experience and knowledge, he wants to educate the community on the importance of consuming local honey. They sell live honey bees and mason bees for pollination; apiary equipment medications and protective gear; raw local honey, propolis, pollen and royal jelly; and bulk bees wax and candles.

SPONSORED BY Lorna, on the other hand, is passionate about the food. “In today’s day and age, society is so busy, Lorna explains. “It breaks my heart to see fully roasted chickens ready to buy in the stores. You

can even buy pre-hard boiled and peeled eggs now. Everyone is so focused on convenience. With the recent COVID pandemic, this may be the wakeup call for society to slow down and take time to ‘do it yourself’ and ‘start from scratch’. Besides their “How To classes, they also sell food preservation equipment such as meat grinders, sausage making supplies, fermentation kits, kombucha kits, butter churners, vacuum sealing equipment, pressure canners, food smokers, wine presses and cheese making supplies. Being a business owner in the downtown core has not always been smooth sailing the past two years, but when you see them smiling as a happy couple and partners in business , it makes you wonder if there’s something to be said about taking up the homesteading lifestyle. Give them a call or email to learn more about their products and classes. Happy Homesteader, 33180 First Ave. 604-814-2800 www.thehomesteader.ca info@thehappyhomesteader.ca

Cutting Down the Time it Takes to Prepare your Home For Sale If you’re thinking of listing your property, one thing that might be holding you back is concern about preparing your home for sale. You may be wondering how much work there will be. Is it going to take a couple of months? A couple of weeks? A few days? That, of course, depends on the state of your property. However, regardless of how close your home is to “show timeâ€? ready, there is plenty you can do to reduce how long that preparation takes. Consider these ideas: • Sell stuff online. The less cluttered your home seems to buyers, the better it will show. So, make a list of items you want to sell, and then list them on one of the many local online market websites. Price items fairly and, chances are, you’ll get rid of everything in a day or two. • Have a repair day. Go through your home and make a list of everything WKDW QHHGV WR EH Ă€[HG 7KHQ VFKHGXOH UHSDLU SHRSOH WR DOO FRPH RQ WKH same day. Voila! In one day, all needed repairs (or, at least, most of them) are done. • Get staging advice. Also, the costs of those professionals may be off-set by the increase in the sale price of your home. Bottomline: Preparing your home doesn’t need to be overwhelming and time-consuming. 31 YEARS IN MISSION

JAG CHEEMA Anyone who has spent any amount of time downtown Mission, has probably passed the Royal le Page office. Inside works one of our hardest working realtors, Jag Cheema. As one of the only local development consultant broker/realtor in Mission, he’s not only passionate about his position but is the realtor/ development land specialist for the District of Mission.

Certified Instructors Small Class Sizes Economical Fee Structures

BALLET | TAP | LYRICAL | JAZZ | CONTEMPORARY HIP HOP | ACROBATICS | MUSICAL THEATRE

Cheema has been in the Real Estate business for 8 years now and entered in to the profession with a strong background in sales. When Royal le Page announced that they were closing down their Mission location, Jag stepped in and kept it alive with a lot of hard work, dedication and an eagerness to succeed. Succeed, he did. As a lifetime local of Mission and a graduate of Mission Secondary, Jag can claim a connection to the community, as well as expertise in the local market.

“I’ve always been interested in real estate,â€? Jag boasts. â€œI bought my first project when I was only 20 years old.â€?

www.candancestudio.com

Much buzz has been about town in regards to the potential boom our little community may experience soon in regards to development. We sat down with Jag Cheema today and he confirmed that the rumours are true. “Downtown Mission will undeniably reshape,â€? Jag explains. As disappointing as this may seem to some of us that enjoy the historical aspects of our downtown, it’s also an exciting time for our community. When we consider the reason why people are suddenly wanting to move to Mission, we all know that our affordability plays a major part in anyone’s decision to relocate. “It’s not just the high costing in the cities that are driving people in to the Fraser Valley,â€? Jag clarifies. â€œNature plays an integral part in attracting potential residents as well. Mission has so much open land, trails and parks‌ it’s no wonder people are captivated with it.â€? Another pressing subject on everyone’s mind is the issue of parking. With so much new development and construction coming in to town, surely additional parking will have to be taken in to consideration. “Parking is definitely a setback for businesses wanting to come to town.â€? Jag nods his head in agreement. â€œIt’s difficult for employees as well. We are confident that the development plans have taken this in to consideration. On a brighter note, latest statistics show that people like to walk. The world is changing, and more and more folks are going green.
